The great thing is that most of these places are all around us and perhaps no more than 150 miles away, usually much closer.

Think you will find that the UK was at the forefront of many wars in Europe and rarely lost. The Brits do like a good fight. I live in a small town in Scotland which housed prisoners from the Napilionic war and there is
a monument where the prison once stood.

Born and raised in Oxford, I spent the first 22 years of my life there. It's a beautiful city, the skyline is iconic with the seven spires and the castle. Oxfordshire holds a special place in my heart, it's the county that made me and if I ever win the lottery, I'd move back in a heartbeat. Just a shame it's so unaffordable to live there. It's beautiful but it's not cheap. It was the most unaffordable (average wages vs average house prices) city to live in the UK not so long ago, presumably is still near the top of the leaderboards.
Oxford's a beautiful city and the countryside that surrounds it is stunning. It's a special kind of green that you simply don't see anywhere else. I could identify an Oxfordshire field by just the colour alone. I still daydream about moving back if I can ever afford to, it's still my home in my mind.

The city centre is a shadow of itself. There is a horrible, large shopping centre and we lost Boswells 🙁. Cornmarket is full of tacky tourist shops.

Oxford is still great and unaffordable. Landed here in 97, bought an ex council house in 98 - nearly 5 times as expensive now.
Yeah the Westgate ain’t pretty and Cornmarket has some tat, but it’s still the best centre of any city in the UK.
It’s mostly a working class town, bar north of St. Giles.

Ah Conner you’re so funny it’s endearing.
Really nice video and you made me laugh again because I was thinking “why hadn’t he made the Harry Potter connection? SURELY He recognises it, what American wouldn’t?” 😂🤣
You hit the nail on the head - ALL those important people who once studied and worked there, ALL that history - ALL those years of knowledge and intelligence, all this people who gave huge contributions to humanity…
And today the first thing anyone will say is
    “Oh loook Harry Potter!”

Keep up the good work 👌

I totally agree there is something calming & relaxing about studying in a public library, although back in the day making the slightest noise and you would get asked (politely) to leave, these days the librarians make more noise!! I don't get as much chance to spend that much time in libraries but I will definitely have to make time to go to these historic towns for definite.

As someone who read Mathematics at Oxford (many years back), let me point out some things.
    1) A mathematics degree at Oxford is a BA. _Not_ a BSc. You have no idea how important this is.
    2) The University is comprised of a lot of independent colleges, each with their own culture and rules.
    3) It is _not_ an elitist establishment. Or it is trying harc not to be.
    4) The academic pressure is intense. But the terms are very short. Which I suppose makes them even more intense.
    5) The tutor to student ratio. I went to lectures where there were about 30 pupils. But had 2-1 tuition with the college professors. (Later 1-1 when someone dropped out.)
    5) The Bodlian library is one of the few (3?) places that has a copy of every single book published after [hmmhhmhmhnm].
    5) There is a Disney store there where I got a Winnie the Pooh bear who still stands on my bookcase today.

Connor, I think that your statement right at the end of this video says it all about you, doesn't it? You show an appreciation of all of our history here in the U.K. by coming out with that thoroughly modern phrase of "....you have an overabundance of super 'cool' stuff...." which proves that you have a huge amount of respect towards our country when you can combine both history and the modern world with one another and then come to your own conclusion about what you think about both of them. Respect such as that can only be reciprocated by me and you're deserving of an equal amount of respect in return.

I’ve not commented before, Connor, but I just wanted to say that I love your videos, and I watch them all.
You have such a willingness to learn, and the wonderment that you often display, is a joy to behold, (as is obvious in this video)
You may not realise how perceptive you are too…pretty rare I’d say, and your commentary is highly entertaining, frequently punctuated with humour which is great.
On a more serious note, I want to thank you for making the kind comments at the end of your videos, taking the opportunity to wish people well who may be struggling with their mental health. This is something that resonates with me very much, as I am practically housebound due to several disabilities, and my mental health as a result.
So thank you Connor, you never fail to entertain us all, and remind some viewers 🎉that life can be more bearable. 🙏🏻
Finally, may I urge you to visit the UK again, armed with all the knowledge you’ve accumulated, and to experience for yourself all the wonderful places you’ve covered in your fantastic videos.
I never thought I’d be in the situation I find myself in now, unable to visit the wonders we’re have on our doorstep, but you can, (I hope) so please, don’t put it off for some time in the future, as nothing is guaranteed in life, unfortunately.
So thanks again for everything Connor, I wish you and your family all the best, and please understand that your work is hugely appreciated by so many people.👏

The fact that we have not been subject to that many invasions is part of the reason why we have such a rich trove of historical treasures, but we have also in recent centuries taken a lot of care to preserve the past through legislation, planning requirements, setting up bodies like the National Trust, English Heritage, Cadw, Historic Scotland, etc etc, recognising it needs preserving or else greedy developers would knock it all down....

This video hardly showed a fraction of Oxford - he mentioned two of the colleges, Magdalen ('Mawdlin') and Christchurch. out of ..... 42! He showed the small exhibition of the university's Bodleian Library without mentioning that many of the Colleges have older libraries than the university's. He showed the Museum of History of Science, which is actually the smallest in the university. The Ashmolean museum has extensive collections of international status, Egyptian through every other culture and a massive art collection, it is older than the British Museum and National Gallery in London. The Oxford University Press is the world's largest non-government publisher.

Oxford may be one of the many places where the Harry Potter movies were filmed, but its modern claim to literary fame surely comes from the Philip Pullman series of novels His Dark Materials and the even better sequels/prequels the Books of Dust. Its colleges have also given us three of the best British exponents of popular science - Richard Dawkins (The Selfish Gene), Susan Blackmore (The Meme Machine) and David Deutsch (the life-changing The Fabric Of Reality).

I believe the series (based on books of the same name) called 'A Discovery of Witches' was filmed there, well a lot of the series was based in Oxford, I'm not sure if it was actually filmed there, it looked spectacular regardless.
The Harry Potter production team certainly got around, I live in West Wales in Pembrokeshire, a few miles from where I live is a beach called Fresh WaterWest, which is where they filmed the 'Shell House" scene and where they filmed where they buried Dobby the House Elf, (which is now a bit of a monument) thanks to the fans leaving stones and (sigh) socks etc there.
Incidentally some scenes from a Discovery Of Witches was filmed the an underground chamber in Pembroke Castle, some 7 miles or so from F-West beach. (also some Robin Hood scenes were filmed at F-West as well. :) ( The Russel Crowe one)

I was lucky enough to enter Oxford University (Merton College). However, then my academic career collapsed, and I didn't complete my degree. (Many years later I discovered that my problem was dyspraxia.)
Christ Church - it's wrong to call it Christ Church College - is actually also a Cathedral! So there is a Cathedral dating from about 1500 in it. Coming from Merton, which has the oldest purpose-built academic accommodation in the world (1283), I regard Christ Church's Great Hall to be positively modern. If I remember aright, our Great Hall dates from 1290...
Tolkien was for part his life at Merton College, including in his last few years, when Ii met him. (He died nearly 50 years ago, in August 1973.)

Oxford Born and bred . It's kind of sad living here my whole life you tend to not see it or just forget what a stunning place it is . I live a five minute walk from C. S. Lewis's home and a thirty minute walk from J.R.R. Tolkien's home . The house where Oliver Cromwell stayed in the civil war is less than a mile away . So much history and fantastic museums on my doorstep . You don't realize how lucky you are until you see someone else's reaction you your city . I Must get out there and see more .

You're kinda wrong, England was bombed more than any other nation except Germany and yet both nations still have loads of old buildings left. They were not in any way unharmed but it was rebuilt as it was. Compared to the Nordic nations, Italy and Spain though, they lack a lot of the really ancient buildings that could never be restored.

Cambridge is a far prettier town. It has the advantages of being in a more rural area, the River Cam, and the Backs of course. But then, I'm Cantab rather than Oxon. 🤭👨‍🎓

Oh how I wish our government and left liberal types would be so enthralled and in love with our beautiful country the way you and many Americans are. We are watching day by day the destruction of our architecture and monuments because they may have had something to do with 'slavery'? Our culture is disappearing our traditions banned. Oxford has foreigners being allocated housing in listed buildings and trashed and set fire to 😢 everything English has to go along with us the Englishman. Come and see it quickly before it is gone, already the airfield and barracks that was home to the Dambusters has been dismantled and will be no more, no more heritage or pride in our nation. We are fighting back but too much has been lost already. Please please watch something on Capability Brown, one of our greatest landscape gardeners before they too have gone. You want to see grass! Watch his work and weep for it's disappearing. 😢Rick is so calming to watch, such a gentleman and a pleasure to react to I'm sure. Thank you for seeing the beauty in our country and sharing it. 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿💙
