@@johnp8131 But the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum are right next to the V&A and were missing. The Museum of London is just a short walk from St.Pauls. The National Gallery is right at Trafalgar Square...
This should really change its name to "SOME Museums of London".

My favourite is The Victoria and Albert. I once had a college interview and got into London 4 hours early. Decided to use that time in the Victoria and Albert Museum which was only a short tube stop away. I looked up still had 2 hours left next thing I knew I ended up 15 minutes late. When I explained I had lost time in the V&A all three interviewers nodded. I was shocked they found that an acceptable excuse. Seems all three had been there done that.

British Museum has free admission as has pretty much most of Britain's museums, art galleries, libraries. parks and gardens and some stately homes, historic residences and castles although obviously not all places are free but the many that are might ask if you want to make a donation. Its one of the great aspects of Britain.

11:13 totally with you. You feel a fantastic connection to the past and the people when you can see the physical item or place associated with a painting. I love when in stately homes they have paintings of people in the room you are standing, and the room hasn't changed, it makes it all the more 'real'

2:16 Strictly speaking, it wasn't three languages, but three different _scripts,_ or alphabets if you like: Ancient Greek, Hieroglyphic and Demotic. The latter was the cursive form of Ancient Egyptian which was partially understood by scholars, and of course Greek was understood very well. It was this combination of Demotic + Greek which allowed the Hieroglyphic inscription to be deciphered.

I've been to all of them, as you do when visiting London - the British Library is one of my favourites as they change their exhibitions regularly - where they focus on different subjects and themes. The British Museum is in an area of relatively cheap hotels, and when we stay there it is a two minute walk to the (much quieter) rear doors and it is lovely to spend every morning taking a different walk through the wings, exiting to go to the other attractions of the day.

When I was at school in London, my favourite was the Natural History Museum. 65 yrs later, taking my oldest grandsons to the UK for the first time, we had just five days in London. The 12-yr olds were adamant that one whole day be spent at that same museum which had thrilled me so many years earlier. Another day was divided between the Science Museum and the Imperial War Museum. Boys will be boys! 🤔🙄 Btw, the phrase you may have been seeking in regard to the dress and the picture, may be a symbiotic relationship, or a complementary one.

I volunteer at the British Museum and only about half of visitors (or less in high season) are British. It is one of great museums of the world- so people from all over the world do come to see artefacts from their own countries- but that's true in all great museums.
Plenty of people live in the ruins Connor- although I take your point about the present.
You could, however, argue that we are over crest and heading towards living in the ruins ourselves.

I love art galleries the most (I've always been a lover of Impressionism and the music around those times). The best London art gallery for me was The Courtauld at Somerset House on The Strand. I'll never forget seeing the original The Card Players by Paul Cezanne or the Vincent Van Gogh portrait with a bandaged ear. Favourite museum has to be The Natural History Museum. The National Portrait Gallery in Trafalgar Square is also a must if you ever visit, lots of the famous Kings and Queens portraits in there.

Think you would enjoy, one of the Imperial War Museums, whether the original in London, the largest, area wise is at Duxford near Cambridge or perhaps the one in Manchester. Maybe the RAF Museum or the National Army Museum, also both in London. As you can gather, he probably presented about 1% or 2% available? To be fair, all the Museums and galleries shown, were easily walkable from central London. With others, you may have to travel a couple of stops on the tube.

I love your enthusiasm when I see the workmanship in embroidery, the amazing stone carvings of Rome,Egypt what I can not get my head around is the workmanship with the tools they had at the time. The churches and the great cathedral’s the stone mason’s were something else no power tools and I just find it hard to get my head around they were very primitive in many areas but in craftsmanship creative minds they were something else.Today with all the knowledge and tools would struggle to recreate the wonderful carvings in the vaulted ceilings just blows my mind.
The embroidery for example in the Tudor period on Henry and Elizabeth’s court just stunning.
Wish we could go back and just spend a short time in the period we were interested in fo me it would be Tudor England and Henry and the great Elizabeth’s court .

One of the good things about London's museums is that three of the best are practically neighbours: the Natural History, Science, and Victoria and Albert Museums are within a stone's throw of each other. I'm surprised the was no mention of several of the big ones (two of those above and the National Maritime Museum, for instance), but I guess that would have made the video too long! PS - I work as an art critic, and I agree about a lot of abstract art (though some of it is very good)!

What you say about people in the past thinking that they were the most advanced 'modern' people ever is mainly true, except for the period after the collapse of classical civilisation which continued throughout the Middle Ages until the Renaissance. Surrounded by Roman roads, aquaducts and ruined buildings, Medieval people knew that they had a lower level of technology than their ancestors had possessed. This tied in with Christianity, which preached that the world would get worse and worse until the Day of Judgement. It was only in the 15th and 16th centuries that civilisation got back to Roman standards and after that, for the next 500 years, each generation was more advanced than the previous one. It is only today that this idea is starting to falter. Young people now have less money than their parents had. Technology is still advancing, but there is a growing feeling that our lives are gradually becoming more and more difficult.

I like how what you see can't be created in real life, I personally don't see the point in painting something you can see, photography can do the a similar thing. That is to say, I still appreciate art that depicts a recognisable image, just less than modern.

In case you missed it, most of the museums and art galleries in London are free, except for special exhibitions. The 1980s Conservative government decided to charge for museum access but there were a lot of complaints that the high ticket prices were deterring public access, especially for families and less well off people. A Labour Government ended museum charges in 2001, and since then free museums have once again become very much part of British cultural life.
