The capital of an United States of Europe, if there is any, would probably be Brussels as it is already kinda the case for the EU. I don't think so many countries would agree to have London, Paris, Berlin or Moscow as a capital. The latter two could even bring back old and unpleasant memories lol.

Maybe Prague, if the capital must be not only for EU countries. It is somewhat close culturally to both west and east, and almost in the centre. And not many nations have beef with czechs.

I would vote for Prague or Vienna are kind of obvious choices but actually Krakow or Kyiv would have been more appropriate because they are closest large cities to the center of the continent. I think of those two Krakow would be the best because it has far milder winters than Kyiv + close to that virtual border between west and the east both culturally, historically and linguistically.

My boyfriend (romanian, english, german) and understands a bit of french. So there’s 7 different languages just between of us. i dont really think the language would be the biggest problem. I am from Sweden myself and back in the 70's they barely taught English in our schools as a second language, German was much bigger. And if you compare the level of English we had back then to now i'd say if we can become almost fluent any other country can aswell. Most EU laws are set with 150 astricts attached to them because what might work in Italy might not even be an option in Sweden because of weather for instance.

It's easy for the Swedes who speak a Germanic language. Also no offense but your language does not have a status to maintain unlike French, Spanish or Russian. Learning English automatically makes your language weaker. I'm pretty sure you won"t force the French to learn English.

Glædelig jul and Merry Christmas from Denmark..
European Capital - Luxembourg City, maybe Switzerland - Zurich. There are many egg shells to be walked across to settle on one and it wouldn't be in Germany because history - politicians have to forget much faster than the people do. It'd have to be outside British, French, German and Russian influence. We don't really want people coming up here to the North and the North Western side doesn't love anything East of Germany or France (if we're talking about the French). The Med is sorta unto itself.. It's complicated lol Imagine if the United States had originally been separate countries and was today trying to unite all the States together - Cali would want more influence, New York and DC for political reasons and then Utah sat there with a salty lake, desert and some Mormons. It'd kinda be fun to watch but would it actually be possible?
Edits - 2:51 - ...the side in Europe!? ;) lol it straddles Europe and Asia-Minor (Anatolia), to the left of the Bosphorus is Europe and to the right is.. not. *I know he knows, just made me chuckle..

The end goal of the EU is unification in the same way that the individual states are united under the USA. It obviously won't include Russia. But the EU is moving towards a unified military. The French will never agree to speak English as their national language, just through principle. But most countries in the EU do speak it. The loss of the UK was quite a blow to the EU both in terms of economy and available military, including nuclear weapons (the only other EU country which does so is France). Brussels is the current "capital" and I don't see why that would change. Whatever the pro's and cons of the EU it is definitely moving towards becoming a unified country similar to the USA with "state" laws, unified federal laws, a unified military, freedom of movement and common legislation.

    • @tnetroP
      @tnetroP 2 роки тому +2

@@JasonLaneZardoz Last time I looked I was European. The EU is no different to other mergers. Throughout history small areas have merged into larger areas. It starts with a small village which merges with other nearby villages as it grows, becoming a town and then maybe a city. All those small villages once had their own unique local culture until they were swallowed up in mergers. Then bigger and bigger areas merge as you form counties, then countries, and now we are starting to see trading blocks emerge which will inevitibly get closer to integration as the decades move on. It will take time. But it will happen. Individual culture is fading away and becoming less important to people. English is the global language of trade, shipping and air travel. American TV is rife across the world. Smaller national companies are being swallowed up by larger international companies. The EU naturally has a unified currency and there are frequent proposals for a united military. The high streets in most Western countries are increasingly looking like each other. Cultural identity hasn't stopped any of those happening. With each small step the individual national culture is starting to fade. I'm not arguing that this is a good thing or a bad thing. I am simply observing it happening. I've seen how vast the changes have been across Europe and the EU since I was born - and I was born closer to WW2 than I was to the present day. The world is different. Europe and the EU are different, and it's only going one direction.
A full merger of the EU (which is different to Europe) will happen. It's just a matter of time. Even if more countries break away like the UK they will eventually merge back in. The direction of travel is set and the world is only going in one direction. There is an argument to say that culture might actually be the driving force to unite the EU. While every EU country has its own individual culture, they also have a shared European culture which is distinct from other parts of the world. As the rest of the world unifies into trading blocks it will push the EU towards closer integration to survive economically against those other blocks. In the face of growing economic power in China and India the individual countries of the EU might drive for closer integration to compete.

I have even stated that I'm not saying the the coming merger is right or wrong. But for some strange reason because I have a different opinion to you, you feel the need to call me foolish, naive, say I don't appreciate my culture, that I seem hell bent on assimilating something and that I'm not European (despite me being born and living in Europe). I'm not sure why you feel so threatened by someone like me, a total stranger, just because my opinion differs to yours. Perhaps the strive for Catalonian independence, where you say you were raised, explains why you feel threatened by someone who can see where the future is inevitibly headed. I'm fully aware of that regions push for independence and how that went a few years ago.
I'm also very aware of how the EU started as the ECSC between France and Germany's steel industries in a deliberate attempt to bring the European nations together and avoid another continental conflict. In that it has been very successful and the trajectory of the EU from a simple steel industry integration to free movement, through the Common Market, to removal of internal borders, a common currency, aligned trading and tax laws and potentially a combined military force in the near future, in just 70 years, shows exactly where this is going, whether either of us like it or dislike it.

Let's respect each other. Europe will never be one country. Because people would not agree to give up their language and culture and would not allow others to impose their worldview on them. Because of that, there were all the wars. If we cooperate economically, if we respect each other, our diverse culture and most importantly, the independence of each country, then we will live in peace and prosperity. Attempts to create one European country will only bring war and suffering. Therefore, let us cooperate, let us create the future together, but as a Union of free and independent countries.

In my country there are deep and true rivalries even between cities (not to mention north and south) think if people could accept a sort of "european state" (no matter what form it); and I'm sure this happens in 99% of european countries (it would work probably just for countries like Malta, Luxembourg, San Marino etc).

For a capital, it would make sense to choose from one of the continent's big 4 megacities: Istanbul, Moscow, London and Paris. Unfortunately they're all pretty peripheral, geographically speaking and I'm not sure they'd be popular choices across the whole continent. Berlin is the obvious choice. It's big enough, central enough and has been the main focus of EU politics for decades. However, I'm not sure how popular a choice it would be. Being central isn't so important in this day and age, many countris have capitals at the margins of their territory, including the US. Brussels, effectively the capital of the EU, would be the most likely compromise choice. Strasbourg, the seat of the European Parliament could be another candidate. Beyond that, who knows? Any sizeable city could make a case. There could even be more than one capital, as is the case in several nations already. A political capital, financial capital, judicial capital, and administrative capital could all be possibilities and could help settle the issue. It's all hypothetical, of course. It's extremely unlikely that it would ever come to pass. :)

Berlin is not even an option for the reason you mentioned, and I don't see why a capital city needs to be big. Currently typing from Ottawa, but there are other examples (Ankara, Brasilia, Abuja, US state capitals etc.). I think Geneva would male the most sense as it is an international and neutral city, also a diplomatic hub with a lot of international organisations.

@@augth - As I said, any sizeable city could make a case. Ottawa has a population of around 1m, Abuja over 3.5m, Brasilia over 4.5m and Ankara over 5.5m. None of those are exactly small. ;) I do agree though, virtually any city could make a case. Geneva would have a strong case, undoubtedly, assuming that a fiercely neutral Switzerland agreed to become part of such a union, that is.

English is an International language (much to France's disgust); the French are taught English but because of the English/French dislike of one another many of them refuse to speak English, though they have to learn it as a second language.
I have to admit, it does make English speaking people around the world just a tad lazy in learning languages. I know a lot of Scandinavians especially Norwegian and Danish, and they not only speak beautifully clear English, they also have a great understanding of the written word as well.

Having some Germanic languages (like Dutch or the Scandinavian languages) as a native language also makes it easier to learn English. Also, living in a small country (in terms of population) makes it more important to learn English (for tv, internet...), while for example in France you would rarely have the need to use it.
As for that "disgust", that's mainly a stereotype from the English-speaking world. The reasons are more complicated. They actually understand it way better than they speak it.
