I saw the first show he did on the Tonight Show. Johnny Carson didn't realize that crew pulled a fast one on him. He actually thought Brooks was really drunk. When they came back from commercial Johnny was cracking up. He said they pulled a fast one on him.

Fred Garvin ...loved him on the Dean Martin show cause Dean could not help himself from cracking up over Foster Brooks acts. That was the best part of Dean and Foster together.

Takes a lot of work to put together a routine like that. Every gesture is scripted. Like dancing and singing at the same time. Lots harder to do than it sounds.
Actually he was very gifted at ad lib. Not many people knew this but he had a severe learning disability and dropped out of school in sixth grade. He couldn’t memorize.

Worked in a illegal casino as a croupier. Bootlegged liquor. Worked in a steel mill. Quit school in the tenth grade. He was a blackjack dealer. Need an excellent memory for that. Drafted into the Army but was discharged after 14 months because of a hernia. His greatest pleasure was riffing off other performers. Have to be really quick-witted to do that. Martin was an extremely introverted guy. Like Sinatra. Johnny Carson. And he wasn't a boozer. That was an act. After a show, he'd lock himself in his hotel room. When he was on, he was on. When he hit the off-switch, forget about it.

Using the precise word when no other will do. I'm sure there were times when he did improv but when you have four or six minutes, you better have a solid routine and hit your mark, or you'll bomb. Setup, conflict, resolution. Boom! Boom! Boom! Brooks did that in his routines. He told a story. All the great comedians had massive card files. Joan Rivers had tens of thousands of jokes and gags. No different with Rickles and Dangerfield and Cosby. Writing comedy is hard work. It ain't easy. Jerry Seinfeld talks about how he'd agonize over a sentence for a month. No different than writing music. No false notes. Go back and watch your grandfather with a critical eye. His dialogue was dead-perfect, but he did that along with the mannerisms. That takes long hours of practice to get right. Like s concert pianist. Hard, hard work. And he made it look so effortless. Look at the bit he did on the Steve Allen show. Puts me on the floor. Genius.

They gave him the basic premise and then let him run with it. Comedic genius. My grandad had seven brothers and they could sit around and spin yarns for hours and we would all be in stitches. Just because most comics have to work from scripts does not mean they all did. Now, did he improve the more gigs he did? Of course. But he had an innate talent for telling a story.
At one time he was a member of Moms Against Drunk Drivers. Quit drinking when he was 6o. Asked how he had developed his character ......answered, " from my dad and drinking"
Loved the elephant story but I couldn't help noticing that he kept trying to put his hands in his jacket pockets that for some reason come sewn shut. I remember having a jacket with sewn shut pockets and thus this makes me laugh. haha
