I really appreciate the audio being really clear even though the camera is far away. A lot of youtubers don't care enough to take care of the audio like that, thanks a lot for the good info and good quality!
Permethrin is actually minimally interacting with mammilian biology. Get the Sawyers from Tractor Supply or probably any that is made for use with livestock and dilute to the 0.5% level. You could go higher to 1% without much issue, and it will cause ticks to really, really get away from you. However some people might be a bit more sensitive to it, skin irritation etc, so sticking with 0.5% is going to be more economical and probably work just fine.
You don't have to dip or saturate clothing, it's just wasting product. It only takes contact with a few molecules to work. Spray until the surface appears damp. Mark the date on the calendar and respray in 4 weeks although it should cling to fabric and footwear for 42 days or up to 6 gentle hand washings. It won't last longer if you soak clothing. It won't work on our skin as the skin oil will neutralize it in 20 minutes. Store clothing out of sunlight. Don't spray if pollinators are present. Don't get the wet spray on the cat, it's toxic to their nervous system. Just wearing treated footwear and socks pulled up over trouser legs will reduce tick bite by 73.6%
Ticks can Crawl on the ground, but more likelly climb brush, Females lay eggs on low/and high brush. Anything that passes and touches the brush, Including your head, Ticks will cling onto. Upper leg, waist, arms and head,
1* Love those shoes! 2* I do the same thing but I also treat my hammock. I don't treat my long underwear myself, I have definitely woken up in my hammock with dead ticks all over like someone threw in a bag of raisins when I wasn't looking. That was at the first campsite of the sht. Northern one
Hammock tents ftw! Never sleeping on the ground again, it's for peasants. Good idea about treating it. Last time I hiked, I woke up to see a bunch of ticks crawling on the netting, looking for me.
Permethrin is neutralized by sunlight, so the inside of your clothes will last longer that the outside exposed to sunlight. When drying your clothes or boots don't set them out in the sun to dry!~
Thanks for the video. I always heard about permethrin and always wondered about application of it. Perfect timing as the other day while out hiking and geocaching I ended up with a tick on me.
Can anyone tell me - Does permethrin lose its strength when exposed to the summer heat of the car? I keep a mixture in my car at all time. I was told it losses it potency.
This makes me so happy to have found it! We are getting them thick right now in northern California! You said they use it on livestock but can I use it on my dog do you know?
Yes, its commonly used on canines. Cats, no. Just do a google search, normal dog dips are made at 0.6% solution for bad flea/tick, while 0.06% is commonly used as a spray.
I have read that permethrin which includes petroleum distillates either shortens the life of the effectiveness or doesn't work to kill ticks and other bugs. What have you experienced? Is there a brand that you recommend?
Can you put this solution in a spray bottle and apply it to your clothing and get good results ? / or do you have to soak them as you do to get bug free results?
Yes, spray works well also - both methods last 6 weeks. There is a company that you ship your clothing to that will last for 70 washings - it is used in US Army uniforms
Love the shoes too! Small point, but even though it looks like you are saturating the clothing, natural fibers take "time" to completely absorb a liquid. I would slow the process down and give the fibers a chance to expand, especially wool which is naturally resistant to moisture although probably you did not do any wool items. This is not something you would be able to see, sort of like washing clothes with stain remover, the water/soap/stain remover combo works better as it soaks for an hour and spends more time on the fabric rather than just adding to a wash load. Massaging the garments like you do helps as well, then just let them sit for a few minutes. There is probably enough solution on them while they are air drying but just a thought. Get some better gloves, longer cuffs.
Great video how long have you been using it like that for ? No issues with rashes or skin irritation? I have some 38.6 % permethrin 😵 I'm trying to figure out the diluted ratio for that.
2:53 It looks like you used the wrong opening to pour out the Permethrin and way more than 3oz was used. Was that deliberate? Edit: Maybe you didn't want to squeeze 1oz 3 times and then a 4th squeeze into the measuring portion of the bottle and just opted to eyeball the ~3oz?
I thought the same. Although being over 50% just means he was at 0.075% vs 0.05. At the low doses there isn't much harm going to happen, unless possibly if you have really sensitive skin.
My understanding is that ticks are picked up around the ankles or on my boots so I only treat my gaters, not my shirts unless I were to crawl through the bushes or grass.
I have a question here in uk hard to get stuff I got some ready to use in a 5lt. It says it has premyth init but says not to use on cloths ? Should I water it down and apply ??
Ixodes [BLTs] ticks are pretty lazy and don't climb much higher than your knees. They have to climb up that is why the emphasis on the footwear and treated pants tucked into treated socks.
Alpha-Gal allergy is seriously life changing shit! Thank you for this video-I will not have the rest of my family get it, Lyme or any of the other diseases ticks deliver!

This is completely inaccurate. Wearing treated footwear and pulling up your socks over your trouser legs will only reduce tick bites by 72.9%.

Wish i known about this 15 yrs ago when my daughter contacted Rocky mountain spotted in South TX!!
Your tax dollars at work, another product of plumb island research center, in LYME conneticut😊
Permethrin is neutralized by sunlight, so the inside of your clothes will last longer that the outside exposed to sunlight. When drying your clothes or boots don't set them out in the sun to dry!~
Also, Permethrin will make cats sick and can be fatal. Don't use it wet near cats or wear treated clothing in a home with cats.
Thanks for the video. I always heard about permethrin and always wondered about application of it. Perfect timing as the other day while out hiking and geocaching I ended up with a tick on me.
Oh man! Is it that time of year already??
Can anyone tell me - Does permethrin lose its strength when exposed to the summer heat of the car? I keep a mixture in my car at all time. I was told it losses it potency.
We in Oregon use Antelope urine we Soak our clothing it for about a week.. and that works real good after you get used to the horrible odor !!
We do the same here in Virginia with deer urine. But it drove my bloodhound off. Haven't seen her in months. Thankfully my wife likes it.😂😂
@oldandintheway9805 Hahaha...She's a real Trooper...a Keeper.
Permethrin comes from a gland under centipede armpits and it is perfectly safe.
This makes me so happy to have found it! We are getting them thick right now in northern California! You said they use it on livestock but can I use it on my dog do you know?
Be careful with pets. My understanding, and please correct me, it's toxic for cats. I'm not too sure about canines, I need to do my homework.
Yes, its commonly used on canines. Cats, no.

@@MidwestBackpacker Thanks much!
Thanks for the tips!
Can you use a dryer machine instead of hang drying?
@@pumancat air dry first time. Wash dry normally after
You said small children; What constitutes small? Do we measure by height, or weight, or age? Need to be precise here!
Great tip, 1/10 of the price! I don't pay extra for marketing and minor convenience.
Have 40% small vial mil grade. How to mix with water?

I have been using permethrin for close to 10 years with no issues. Math is hard. 😜
@MidwestBackpacker great thanks for the video and all the good tips really appreciate it, happy packing.
GOOGLE C1V1 = C2V2. Dilution equation
Permethrin works great I spray my gear as well I’m too lazy to mix my own🌲awesome shoes!
Isn't permethrin a neurotoxin? Also it appears to be mildly carcinogenic? Probably a good idea to use gloves when dealing with it.
Read this article, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6343280/. Very Very safe if you use it as directed.
Does this work well for mosquitoes?
Permethrin can kill a broad range of pests, such as fleas, ticks, cockroaches, flies, and mosquitoes.
How bout lice ? Can it be used to spray in carpet matteres. Ill shampoo ofc afterwards
It isn’t intended for that type of use.
You are asking a lot from those food service vinyl gloves
Does permethrin repel, or just kills? In south Florida we got a lot of mosquitos and noseeums.
Both.
Those are hectic shoes
Nice job.
i cant find 10%.... only 26%....
