  • What does a Presto jiggler sounds like? If you’re new to canning I’m sure you’re wondering what it’s supposed to sound like! I sure did!
    #canning #presto #pressurecanning
I recorded this #shorts so you don’t have to wonder anymore! Just in time for Canuary and anyone new to pressure canning.
A nice steady wobble is all you’re looking for, a bit faster is fine but you really don’t want to slow it down much more than this

The pressure gauge is registering about 1 lb low. For the regulator set at 10 lbs, as you have it, requires 11 lbs weight to jiggle it. Canning guidelines are that 11 lbs of pressure are needed. Either with a weighted regulator set for 10 lbs or a dial (accurate) gauge reading 11 lbs. (Pressure needed for my altitude.) I have several Presto canners and have changed over to the adjustable regulator. Local extension service no longer checks dial gauges for accuracy. That's not a worry any more, as the adjustable regulator controls the pressure (5 lb,10lb or 15 lb), regardless of what's displayed on the dial. The canner that I use most often is off, too. When the regulator starts to move, dial reads almost 12 lbs.
Just a though, FWIW, about dials & gauges. Hope it's helpful to someone.

The Presto educators (well, one lady) called me about using the jiggler weighted regulator with my canner. Their instructions are to completely disregard the dial pressure while using the jiggler regulator. Of course, I always get a kick when I can see that the dial is correct. Many of the newer canners don't even come with a dial gauge.

@@FermentedHomestead I like the Presto, too. Especially since they came out with the adjustable regulator. As long as I'm within sight and sound of the canner, I don't have to baby-sit the dial any more. A bonus for me, as my propane stove runs a little hot and pressure tries to creep to 15 lbs on the lowest setting. Now the jiggler keeps that under control. YEAH!

I’m a little worried, I’m pretty new but have canned about 10 times. My juggler this time is not really jiggle much at all compared to previous times. Now my pressure is all good has been cooking for about 49 min going to 90 min but do I rely on my gauge even if my juggler is not how it was before( which was very vigorous.
Please give me some feed back

If you have a weighted gauge (the jiggler) always go by the weight, pressure gauges can be off quite easily. That being said, the jiggler should be a slow steady sway on a presto. If it’s rockin and rollin the heat is too high so you’re over cooking it and wasting energy. Be sure to check the vent pipe before each session so it’s clear to properly jiggle the jiggler. I hope that helps 😊

Is it in medium heat or in between high and medium heat ????

Whichever works for you. Often between low and medium. It varies depending on altitude for example.
