Jackson, I surfed on a torn ACL, I ran on a torn ACL but it was still torn, the only fix is surgery. The only thing I did was more damage to the knee. The best advise I can give you is get the knee (muscles) strong pre-surgery and work the rehab process like professional athlete. That means daily workouts (when cleared) and working hard. Range of motion is a key in the beginning and then strength. I was surfing in 4 months with a brace and boarding in 9 months. Not crazy shit but just cruising. You cam come back stronger but it takes work, hard work. Sitting on the couch eating ding dongs won't cut it... Good Luck JL!

I'm a professional athlete and the same thing happened to me at 15. I'm now 35 and I didn't take the surgery. If that's your decision, be ready to workout everyday of your life for the rest of your life to strenghen your muscles, yoga, etc... Whatever you decide, just do your best! Good luck!

Ruptured my ACL 2 years ago.. lived with it without problems (did 1.5hours of exercises for the leg on a daily basis). It was all good until one wrong move playing basketball in June. Had to get surgery this October. Now I'm already back in full recovery mode. I's looking good. The physiotherapist said I could go skiing at the end of the season, but I think I will skipp it just to be on the safe side. Than it's full power adrenalin during the summer🤙
So..it's not the end of the world. Tales some time but then you are as good as new :)

Hey Brah, just to say. Road a full year and played soccer on a partial tear, until I hit a 60 foot and knuckled the third hit. It did it pop, but the pain was horrible! Went in, now completely ripped. Like your dad, surgery may of 2017. Was riding the December of 2017 and at the snowboard mag launch with team kids April 2018. Ps. Was 49 when that happened. Either way meniscus or ACL. You will be recover and kill it in short order. Recovery is 100% in the head! Good luck brah!

3 ACL surgeries here. Totally possible you can survive on a torn acl. You can get prescribed a sports knee brace that really holds it together and gives you a lot of piece of mind. They’re waterproof too. I only wear them (both knees) when skiing.
I would not compare your recovery to your dads. Age makes a huge difference. HUGE. My last surgery I was walking within 2-3 days. Skiing in 2 months. It is up to you how seriously you take rehab, and how good you are about wearing you brace and easing back into it. Make your legs strong as fuck before AND after surgery. Once I started making my legs strong I’ve been going much harder than ever at 34 years old now and no issues. I kept going hard on weak legs, not wearing my brace, and kept tearing them.
Start conditioning your legs now, like right now lol. Keep that up until the day before surgery, and jump right into therapy, do twice as much as they say to do (including rest), and then keep squat condition the legs for years after and you’ll be great.

Brah! That definitely sucks. I had a sprained MCL and torn miniscus this past year and it's been tough. But I'm sure you'll find some things to do and modify others and it'll be a distant memory by this time next year. Advice I have: think about what your priority is - (skiing, running, surfing, swimming, winter, spring, summer, etc.) - and get stronger for that priority.

My wife and I (Floridians) took a trip to ski/snowboard for our honeymoon about a year ago. It was great fun for me and I had a lot of heavy wipeouts but got the hang of snowboarding pretty well by the end of the 2 days.
However, once we returned home to Florida, the pain/feeling I had in my knee that I attributed to just “being sore” from trying something new never wore off. I’m pretty sure I tweaked my knee due to all of the one leg “skating” trying to get around on the flats. I have pretty confidentially vowed to not be strapped in to a board ever again. The ability to bail or ditch the board with surfing, Skimboarding, kiteboarding, etc, is a huge benefit to risk reduction. Once those feet and knees are strapped into bindings the risk of knee and ligament injuries in particular just skyrocket.
I’m sorry you are dealing with this and I hope you find solutions. You are way more connected to snow than I am so I know it’s hard for you to think about taking substantial time off from the skis.
Thank You Jackson and keep up everything you do so well.

Whew what a bummer man. As a physical therapist who deals with ACL tears treating conservatively and surgically it sounds like you partially tore it a year ago and because you are young and your legs are strong you were able to get by. Also skiing puts different force (anterior/posterior) on your knees compared to surfing (lateral/medial). The ACL prevents your tibia (shin) from moving forward (anteriorly) too much. When you hucked that front flip you landed with your knee extended as your spot of the landing was blind and your rotation was off with the fresh snow. This is a classic ACL injury.
Regardless of whether you decide to go the surgical route or not you’ll have to do rehabilitation to stabilize your knee.
Feel free to reach out if you have questions. Happy to go in more depth. Best of luck

Dude, gnarly news... but not the worst or even close! I busted mine a couple years back and came back stronger than eva. About the year of use without an ACL, I played 2 weeks of hockey and snowboarded for a bit before realizing I had torn mine playing football. I'm sure you know what's really up by now but I hope you know that you can kick the recoveries ass and be back and better than ever! Cheers m8

Jackson, when I did my ACL the dr said you don’t have to have surgery, you can carry on with out an ACL, you just need to build up the muscles around it (hence why you have probably been able to carry on surfing etc). However when I said I wanted to ski again, he was like, nope, surgery for you then! So I had my ACL reconstructed from some hamstring. The hamstring hurt more than the ACL. All key hole surgery.
One bit of advice, given to me by a boxer who was having the same procedure. He said don’t over exercise when recovering. After his first operation the dr gave him exercises to do. The dr said do 20, so he did 40 or 60, and as a result pulled the grafted ACL fix off his knee. When I met the boxer he was on his 2nd operation. This time both legs were affected as they had to harvest the part of the hamstring off the good leg to fix the bad knee. So don’t go crazy on the rehab exercises! Good luck, hoping it’s good news for you!

Bro - I’ve skied 11 years without an ACL, then got it fixed and was like wtf did I wait 11 years. Now, after 2 ACL’s and 6 meniscus I just got my knee replaced and am ripping after only three months. So that was a lot of blah blah blah. Reality is rippers gonna spend time under the knife. It’s part of it. After rehab on both ACLs I was so bomber because I rehabbed with vengeance. I still like to do a lot of the rehab exercises - balance boards and etc. - it’s why I made a miraculous recovery on the replacement - embrace the pain of having a “send it mentality” or go back to school to be an accountant.

I had kinda same thing happen to me about 8 years ago. I messed up my knee skateboarding and the local hospital told me it was just a bad sprain so I went on for about a year thinking it was getting better until it popped out again skateboarding.. Then I had mri done and come to find out I had been skating and racing motocross on a completely torn acl and meniscus with bone on bone contact with pieces of bone floating all thru out my knee for an entire year it was really bad so I had surgery and therapy took about a year to recover but now that knee is stronger than ever before wish I would had had an mri the first time it happened.. If the main Dr says torn ACL, and you need surgery, Get the MRI scans and have another Dr (not affiliated with that med center) to give you a 2nd opinion, In my experience, Dr's want to make money and will stretch the truth to get money, Case in point, I had a blockage in my small intestine, (From pizza and beer and dehydrated all weekend while camping) I had it before but it cleared in a few hours, it was very painful. I knew it was a blockage because when I ate something my stomach got full, but it wouldn't digest and go down further, I couldn't eat more because I was full, regular laxities didn't work, after 3 days I threw that food up to get relief , then went to hospital, after scans 2 doctors came in and said I it was my gallbladder and it needed to be removed immediately, even had forms for me yo sign, I asked them to show me on the scans where they see my gallbladder is inflamed that brought them to this decision, they walked out of the room, came back in a minute later and said, "Ok, we now don't think it's your gallbladder and wrote me a script for "Golytely" an industrial strength laxative, drank it, and in like 2 hours everything was working normal , and pain was gone. it's been 7 years and no pain in that area since, They saw an opportunity to make a quick buck and I called them out on it

Because skin is more closely related to use as what a receiver in football 🏈 would see or a high level basketball player. You are working with those planted cuts like a football 🏈 wide receiver it’s extremely hard on the knee. It’s one of the hardest things for football players to recover from actually because it’s hard for them to ever trust that knee again even though a repaired knee is even stronger than the original tendon. The cuts that players make and football players make obviously take great trust in the strength of your knee
surfing is a lot lore in the ankle a lot less wear and tear on that knee.
I used to be a medical assistant for a surgeon so I’m just sharing the experience of helping those guys recover
And don’t worry it’s not always 6 months. The repair is actually so strong that the time it takes for a patient to recover is up to the patients confidence in theor knee the sooner u trust it and use it the sooner you are back in the water
The knee repairs of today are pretty mind blowing because if it was not for the swelling and the stitches you can basically use the knee out the gate
I remember doing physical therapy so quickly after surgery my stitches were oozing blood 🩸 lol
All the best to ya brother I will be hitting Hawaii this year. Cant wait
