- The latest instalment of our series looking at the history of Gran Turismo heads to the final game to be released on the PlayStation 2 - Gran Turismo 4. While Gran Turismo 3 had really raised the stakes in the franchise, GT4 was about to show everybody that that was just the tip of the iceberg.

The PS2 Era is where Gran Turismo peaked.
Hard disagree. Physics and graphically the 5 & 6 were far superior to 1-4 as you'd hope and expect. Sport was perfect timing to get GT into the more serious realm of Esports just as it was gaining in popularity. 7 is a mix of both Sport and the old collectathon GT's of the past. Despite the very weird microtransaction nonsense at the launch of GT7, its such a great and thoughtfully created game.

Still play GT4 on my Steam Deck. They really need all these tracks from 4 in 7.

Yea but then it gets kind of annoying too. Like racing in new york always keeps crashing into a wall instead of slowing down and turning.

You know I am actually impressed with how much of an impact that Grand Turismo 4 has on many racing gamers. I even still see a handful of content creators who still make videos about them too. 👍
GT4 has to be up there, it's the archetypal Gran Turismo for so many of us slightly older folk. The soundtrack was genuinely great, the graphics were a step forward too, the selection of cars and tracks, outside of AC mods there's still nothing like it.
Gran Turismo 6 has larger selection of cars and tracks, if you mean that.
@@ricecake-vk8by I totally get that, but arguably GT4 was the bigger landmark. EVERYONE had a PS2. Chaz nails it when he points to the inclusion of Le Mans and Nurbs in particular - Nurbs especially was a remarkable feat given the hardware limitations.

Same. I am having tons of fun playing GT5 yet everyone still remembered GT4.
I am currently playing this phenomenal on my PS2 console..what a master piece 👌
One major flaw for GT4 is where it holds a world record for a large number of disc read errors with the infamous info "The disc could not be read".

GT3 was a huge step up in graphics but GT4 finally brought the content to go with it. Before that, when GT3 came along I still returned to GT2 sometimes for the content. Then when GT4 was released I didn't really need to go back to either GT2 or GT3. It was all (mostly) there in one game (aside from Complex String). If only they could get the content together more in the current GT7 with the more traditional open career with more races. They've added some great ones in the limited time updates for weekly races (like the JGTC themed one this week) but for some reason they don't keep them in the game permanently. And Kaz claimed there'd be endurance races coming, 2 years ago, yet somehow Forza is getting an endurance update despite so many missteps at launch. In some ways GT7 feels like GT3 all over again. Wish it was more like GT4 all over again.

The Mercedes one lap magic at the Nurburgring is one of my GT life achievements 😀

GT5 was my favorite! GT4 is definitely in my top 3
Gran Turismo 4, even in 2024 still is the BEST GRAN TURISMO GAME EVER MADE as it featured the most realistic car models ever. Its should've received 96 on Metacritic.
GT3 is fun, GT4 is the best (especially with 360° chase camera mod), GT5 is... interesting
GT4 is a near perfect game, what would make it perfect in my eyes would be it having GT3's physics.
As a side-note IIRC GT3 had a diesel powered BMW in it but take my memories with a pinch of salt.
I'll say that Gran Turismo 4 was peak, but I preferred playing Gran Turismo 3 to 4. My big issue with 4 was the that physics were too understeery compared to 3 even when assists were off along with the controls feeling stiff. If it maintained the physics and controls GT3 had however, it probably could've been my favorite all time GT game.
Might still be the "most complete package" GT.

Imho, GT6 is the best but GT4 is close 2nd with many firsts in the series and many cars never seen since.
Yeah GT6 was incredible. I really enjoyed it. I wonder if they will release a GT8 for the PS5 or they're just going to develop it for the PS6?

IMO, I prefer GT3. I just think the game is more fun. I think GT4 takes itself a little too seriously.
GT4 was my first serious sim. The career mode was fun and open-ended, and it felt like I travelled from continentsl to continent to partake in events so I have no complains there either

Maybe, but this is one of the Greatest of All Time racing games after all...
It proves the new games are going down hill, and that humanity is basically stuck firmly in nostalgia, because what we create recently does not make us happy and only makes us sadder over the past.
