  • I felt it important to share my foray into a Kafkaesque zoning situation...
You buy property, pay high property taxes every year, and still you can't add a little something nice to improve it and make it more enjoyable? I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone.

Nice to see your face! Dealing with the city is so frustrating. My mother has an HOA and they have meetings about what plants they allow.
It's sad that you just want to make a safe and beautiful pergola and they are doing this. It seems the people in these positions tend to be rude, unpardonable and bitter. I really hate to say that, but it is my experience.
Your property Is more than gorgeous.

Restricting shrubs is ridiculous. For trees, I can understand since some have very invasive roots which can destroy utility lines and plumbing especially if the properties are in closed proximity. Regardless, I think if the surrounding neighbors sign off on the tree then it shouldn't be restricted. HOA are getting too powerful and out of control.

@@yume816 I agree completely. What’s sad is that we couldn’t find housing without an hoa in our town unless we paid 2 million for farm land! So hoa it is 😅
We once got a community notice about kids leaving a soccer ball outside, photo and everything. I hope I’m happier when I grow old 😄

@@Alyssasrosegarden Yikes! I guess I should be thankful that my HOA is not even active. You and your fellow neighbors should start going to the meeting and voicing your concerns. Maybe vote the president out. lol

That’s madness. I have an association. I stopped asking for permission to plant things years ago. My house is tucked away in the far back corner. Hopefully, out of sight, out of mind.

Good for you! I've actually seen some various violations in the neighborhood so maybe I'm taking it more seriously than I should. For now I'll focus on other things and see what the future brings.

Nice to see the woman behind the camera. Welcome to home ownership in America where we never truly own our property. Why not just get or build a bigger steel arbor/gazebo? Usually the zoning department doesn't know a violation until someone report it i.e. power-hungry HOA. Good luck!!

@@FumblingwithFlowers Btw if you ever get reported, which is less likely without a HOA, the city will just give you a warning first to remove it.

I don't want to be offensive, so please don't take it that way... But you live in New Jersey, lol... If you get the right contractor, he will probably be able to get that permit without any problem (maybe). The licensed contractors are no doubt 'hand picked' by your county building department. On that same note, it may cost a lot more than you thought. But maybe not, it just depends on who is running things and what kind of contractors you have available. The polite term for what i am getting at is 'protectionism'. I hope that didn't rub the wrong way, i love your channel and i am very sorry you are going thru this, that is a real bummer. Just feel it out and be very careful and use whatever resources you have to investigate the contractors and how they do business. Ask for references, etc. One resource would be a good local greenhouse and plant store, ask them about landscape contractors and carpenters in the area that do that kind of work and who can get the permits. It might be easier than you think. On the other hand, it might be impossible...Good luck! Best wishes!

Permit and yard deep footings is absurd . America 🇺🇸 has strange rules for gardens . Grass height 😂.
Like who would know 😂 funny editing

I so loved seeing your face!! Sad that you're dealing with annoying permit issues, though. The costs of the applications and such that you mention are insane. As expensive as it is already to own a house and land with it, it shouldn't be this hard to add garden structure. Kind of makes me angry actually.
I like your property type. Never heard of Flag property types. It would be right up my alley, because I'd LOVE to not have a front curb. I like that tucked away feel you have there. Very nice. It's silly that they want you to jump through hoops to have a pergola. I also think pergolas and many other things similar would be beautiful in a front yard. I'm over the front / back yard sensibilities. I have a larger front yard than back yard, so I have to do a lot of the fun things up front.

It's frustrating but I'll put it on the back burner for now and work on other things. There's always stuff to do in the garden. Thanks for your supportive comment. 😊
