Or like this is a lie he is so bought into that the lie is natural to him? I imagine the legality of him lying would hinge on whether he really believed himself or not, which isn't something you can really prove one way or another, but I find people like him interesting because it's so hard to tell just how much is delusion and how much is some sort of personality disorder. I'll never forget when Billy sued UA-camr Apollo Legend. He sued him while he was going through a rough time in his life, including having cancer. Apollo exposed him for cheating in depth like Karl. Apollo eventually died not long after reaching an agreement with Mitchell. I loved Apollo's content because it introduced me to speed running. I was sad when I found out he died after going through all that shit.

Was playing the Donkey Kong cabinet only to have some guy tell me that I needed to move so he could play and record. I said "when I'm done". There are, but it takes a LOT to be labeled as a frivolous litigant, depending on the jurisdiction; even in the most lenient of jurisdictions, the label of "frivolous litigant" is a fairly high bar to meet. It's a double-edged sword, because it allows for rightful litigants to file suit against those who have genuinely wronged them, but it also allows jerks like Billy to abuse the system to silence his critics. Also not all states have anti-SLAPP laws on the books, otherwise most of these cases would be thrown out because they are explicitly intended to discourage public participation by silencing critics.

What a shame. Growing up my dad had me playing all the classics, and Billy Mitchell was always a kind of legend in my eyes. I actually went to a convention with my father and got to shake his hand. I’m an ex paralegal who worked in litigation in the UK, the system in the US is very similar. Even if you do it yourself, there is always a filing fee (mostly depends on the size of the claim), if you go through a firm it’s even more expensive. Also it’s important to note that generally speaking, the losing party (in civil suits) will have to pay for ALL legal costs, including the winning side.

If I remember Legal Eagle correctly, that last part isn't always true in the US. Suing someone into bankruptcy despite being objectively wrong is a viable strategy depending on where the suit was filed. Then again, not a lawyer myself, just parroting one. About 4 years ago there was a dude at a tiny con in Indy who was cosplaying as Billy Mitchell, but he lost the cosplay contest because he cheated. I think the judges considered the fact that it was literally just Billy Mitchell “cosplaying” as himself to be an unfair advantage. I posted this a few weeks after it happened too, apparently I should consider myself lucky I didn’t get sued.
For those who don't know what the cheating scandal was. After his DK record was surpassed he quickly took his record back when he submitted footage of him taking the record back. However everyone pointed out that the gameplay he submitted loaded in a werid way. For the record to be official on Twin Galaxies it has to be on the original Arcade version of the game because if you use an emulator you can reload at points where you mess up untill you eventually get the high score. The way the game loaded was how it loads on an emulator. Billy and his friends who were the only witnesses to him getting this record insisted it was the arcade cabinet version. Apparently he used the only arcade version of DK in history that loaded like an emulator and the only people who could confirm it wasn't an emulator was his friends......seems liget. But he had a fan base and had friends in twin galaxies so he was able to hold the record and keep the lie going for years. But a few years ago the moment against him grew and the lawsuits he threw around didn't help. And eventually Twin Galaxies removed the record

I ran into Billy Mitchell at a convention last year, and had a conversation with him. From that I gathered he was incredibly full of himself and thinks he's the main character in everyone's lives. We talked about how the difficulty of video games has changed over time, and before I could say I appreciate that there are different difficulties for gamers to have options he bragged about being the best at the old games, which were very difficult because he isn't a pussy. 10/10 hilarious conversation.

As someone who shares the same name as Karl, I just gotta say, hearing Charlie say my name so many times in 17 minutes and 19 seconds was an absolute pleasure.
I saw Billy Mitchell at Free Play Florida a few weeks ago. Had no idea who the guy was, just took my kids to the convention because it seemed like a good time for them. I had to use the restroom, and as I went to wash my hands, Billy Mitchell was at a sink, looking at himself intensely in the mirror. He was fixing his shirt cuffs, adjusting stray hairs, and checking his jacket for lint. As he walked away from the mirror, he turned back one last time, about 5 feet from the counter and shot double guns to his own reflection. I have never seen a more douchey gesture in my life. Again, I had no idea who this was. I told my friends back in the main conference hall about this encounter immediately. They knew who I was describing but had no idea about any of this lawsuit stuff or alleged cheating. We stumbled across this video and are all having a good laugh now.

I’m an ex paralegal who worked in litigation in the UK, the system in the US is very similar. Even if you do it yourself, there is always a filing fee (mostly depends on the size of the claim), if you go through a firm it’s even more expensive. Also it’s important to note that generally speaking, the losing party (in civil suits) will have to pay for ALL legal costs, including the winning side.

If I remember Legal Eagle correctly, that last part isn't always true in the US. Suing someone into bankruptcy despite being objectively wrong is a viable strategy depending on where the suit was filed. Then again, not a lawyer myself, just parroting one. About 4 years ago there was a dude at a tiny con in Indy who was cosplaying as Billy Mitchell, but he lost the cosplay contest because he cheated. I think the judges considered the fact that it was literally just Billy Mitchell “cosplaying” as himself to be an unfair advantage.
I posted this a few weeks after it happened too, apparently I should consider myself lucky I didn’t get sued.

For those who don't know what the cheating scandal was. After his DK record was surpassed he quickly took his record back when he submitted footage of him taking the record back. However everyone pointed out that the gameplay he submitted loaded in a werid way. For the record to be official on Twin Galaxies it has to be on the original Arcade version of the game because if you use an emulator you can reload at points where you mess up untill you eventually get the high score. The way the game loaded was how it loads on an emulator. Billy and his friends who were the only witnesses to him getting this record insisted it was the arcade cabinet version.
Apparently he used the only arcade version of DK in history that loaded like an emulator and the only people who could confirm it wasn't an emulator was his friends......seems liget. But he had a fan base and had friends in twin galaxies so he was able to hold the record and keep the lie going for years. But a few years ago the moment against him grew and the lawsuits he threw around didn't help. And eventually Twin Galaxies removed the record

I ran into Billy Mitchell at a convention last year, and had a conversation with him. From that I gathered he was incredibly full of himself and thinks he's the main character in everyone's lives. We talked about how the difficulty of video games has changed over time, and before I could say I appreciate that there are different difficulties for gamers to have options he bragged about being the best at the old games, which were very difficult because he isn't a pussy. 10/10 hilarious conversation.

I saw Billy Mitchell at Free Play Florida a few weeks ago. Had no idea who the guy was, just took my kids to the convention because it seemed like a good time for them.
I had to use the restroom, and as I went to wash my hands, Billy Mitchell was at a sink, looking at himself intensely in the mirror. He was fixing his shirt cuffs, adjusting stray hairs, and checking his jacket for lint. As he walked away from the mirror, he turned back one last time, about 5 feet from the counter and shot double guns to his own reflection. I have never seen a more douchey gesture in my life. Again, I had no idea who this was.
I told my friends back in the main conference hall about this encounter immediately. They knew who I was describing but had no idea about any of this lawsuit stuff or alleged cheating. We stumbled across this video and are all having a good laugh now.
