Low ratings in Korea make all the sense because this guy is the most toxic ML I've seen in a series, this Korean version of the story is disgusting to watch, and this diary doesn't make him less toxic. He is extremely cold and arrogant with her till the end, he controls her via lowering her self steem, he bodyshames her, makes fun of her, never looks at her with love, almost never hug her, in fact it seems she bothers him constantly. I guess they invented this diary because the guy they showed in the series was sooo toxic and such a huge red flag, that they tried a way of painting him more tolerable, but this diary doesn't match at all his behaviour during the series. He is just and arrogant jerk the whole series, that thing he does with her is not love, never is

When you watch it after the first time, you pay more attention and you can see the character change. The diary gives more character insight as to why he is so cold and seemingly detached. I mean think about it. His mama purposely dressed him as a girl because she wanted a girl so badly. How might that impact you when the truth is revealed to you while changing for swim class. Mama (and daddy) created this. I LOVE that the diary explains this. Wish they would have taken a bit more time to explore that in the series.
No one can beat the chinese version. i personally am a kdrama fan since almost 20 years now and with all the experience I have i still think the Taiwanese version with Zhang Zhishu was the best enactment of the legendary manga. Watched it in 2008,its 2018 and I still think its the best.
Oh how I wish the Taiwanese version also had Jiang ZS’s diary. I wonder what his character would’ve written if ever he also had something like this. He obviously was more mysterious than BSJ that’s why I am more curious about what’s on his mind during those times he was with Xiangqin..
