In 2021 the German company Birkenstock was bought by French LVMH which is a large fashion enterprise. Hence the renewed focus on the fashion aspect of it for achieving more sales is causing the compromise of the old German heritage.
Thank you for such an informative video! This is really helpful. I would love to hear your thoughts and experience with the different types of leather (nubuck, oiled, suede, birko flor, etc.).
I know it’s been 2 yrs since this video but I have to say this was THE best review I have ever seen regarding these sandals. I’ve had to return a few because the sizes (for me) are different in every pair I bought. Weird. You’re hilarious and I subscribed
I have FLAT feet & bad knees bc of eons of dancing, and I LOVE LOVE the support provided by my old Boston clogs. Haven't bought new Birks in a long time & I wanted a pair that wouldn't look fugly w/sun dresses... So, with a little trepidation, I JUST ordered a pair of Gizeh platforms, & I'm already experiencing buyers remorse. I've read reviews for the Gizeh, but none mention whether there's a marked difference between the original & new footbeds. Do any of you gals (gals who LIKE the original Birk beds) own Gizehs? What's your take on 'em? Mine are supposed to arrive in a few days.🤞🏼
I don’t own that kind because I don’t like how they cover the instep of the foot as I am petite and the shape of that shoe would cut my leg even shorter (only in my opinion) plus I don’t like the plastic thong between the toe. Try them and see how you feel, keep them on a towel when you try so you can return if they are not for you. It’s a treasure hunt of sorts. 😄
Another very flattering style is the Sydney model. I'm still trying to break mine in but they are so cute. Not as bulky as the arizona's. Although I will say, I've seen pictures of girls wearing dresses with Arizona's and it looks really nice, despite the sandal being a bit chunkier.
I have just purchased an Arizona soft footbed, It's great to know the difference, it will be my first birkenstock, so I will buy the original afterwards 😊
Best review I've seen so far! This was so helpful. Thank you so much. I almost got the softbed ones. I so appreciate the observation about the wrinkle staying in the synthetic material. A hug from Madrid 😘
Yes! I have a soft bed, and I have noticed that it is smoothing out and becoming less supportive of my feet. I have flat feet, so it makes a difference to me. I didn't think the original bed would help much, but I'll try it!
I have a pretty flat foot and the original footbed definitely hurt my feet at first but overtime they have become so comfortable and supportive. I find that using the original footbed really supports my arch despite it being flat and even can say it makes my foot posture and positioning better in line with my body to support my arch. It makes my foot more used to being less flat and more correct if that makes sense.
Thank you. I've been told to get a pair with a backstrap due to a broken toe. And I've been debating about the footbed style. Long-term really is what matters.
Oh! I've only gone with soft Arizonas - and I've ended up having to give them away. I didn't end up liking them at all years later. I ended up really getting some major foot pain. . I'm wondering if the Original would be better for me. Like they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Really worth seeing video from a real Birkenstock connoisseur! I have never seen such a well-founded video here! I see it very much like you do: Birkenstock soft footbed is for beginners or as a transition. When you have survived the break in phase, the Birkenstock shoes with the original footbed are the most comfortable shoes in the world because they are individually adapted to your foot. And the process almost never ends, it becomes even more comfortable every time you wear it. The only thing I was missing in your great video: I have the feeling that the additional layer of soft bedding made of non-natural material makes you sweat more, is that the same for you? I would be happy to see more Birkenstock videos from you! Best regards to your feet 👣😉🤗
Thank you so much for the incredible feedback!!!! I didn’t find the soft foot bed made my feet sweat more but I do think it does not wick away moisture as fast due to the added padding. After break down they truly for me were not nearly as supportive and comfortable. But non the less a good gateway. I have a good video going up on an unboxing and review for fall/winter birks in the BUCKLEY STYLE. They blew me away. Great choice for the cooler and cold months.
@@heidishouse5861 Sure, I enjoyed the video and seldom seen so much cork expertise here ... BUCKLEY are great: this mix of moccasins and clogs! Do you have the normal ones or those with lambskin lining?
Very Helpful thank you. I got a not Arizona type pair last year. They are still quite uncomfortable but I’m going to try the Arizona soon because I need Sandles that I can put on and go.
Try the soft foot bed or the EVA ones that are squishy and water proof. I am gearing up to do a video on vacation ready Birks soon! Soft footbed are good to go right out of the box and the EVA are an all weather option !
Mayari regular fit are perfect on my feet but I've heard they're narrower than the Arizonas. Do you think that regular fit on Arizona's Birkenstock would be a bit big on me? Whoever has an opinion please comment, I'm trying to purchase a last minute on sale pair and don't know what to choose😬
I have also heard the Mayari and gizeh run narrow, but a lady at the shoe store today showed me how the mayari are the same width as the rest of the original footbeds. I ended up with the franca original footbed (normal/wide width) after trying both styles. They were more comfortable for me than mayari. I actually returned the mayaris I got a week ago bc they were narrow for me
I've tried the original footbed but the toe bar hits my foot in the wrong spot. Is there anyway to soften the toe bar or will it get better with the break in period?
My understanding is that if that happens the shoe may be the wrong fit\ Size for your foot. Perhaps trying going to the store and trying different sizes. The toe bar should be accurately placed usually adjusted via the size. Let me know what happens?
Great review. I just bought my first pair of hard bed and was shocked at how bruised my feet felt after wearing them for as little as an hour. I have narrow and probably bonier feet and need a lot of cushion. I just can’t imagine the hard bed getting more comfortable, they’re hard as a rock. Do they really get that much better once worn in?
I have NO arches, and the original footbed is definitely a winner for me. Also, many podiatrists apparently think the original sole is great for us flat footed sisters. ❤

@@heidishouse5861 Hi. I have a question I just thought of. I’m still in the process of breaking in my new Birkenstocks. Someone said they had a big problem with theirs smelling really badly, but from all the videos I watched prior to purchasing absolutely no one mentioned problems with them smelling bad. In your experience do you have problems with them becoming smelly at all?
@@FitBabe no…., not one pair of mine smell. However if your feet are wet and you put them on that “could” cause dampness and mold/bacteria which cause smell. I have also cleaned the footbeds on occasion if there is too much oil build up ( still not smell) with a suede eraser and cleaner. I am right now editing that video to show people how to do that. Do not use soap and water or baking soda like a lot of these videos show, it WILL RUIN the shoe. The EVA Birks are water proof and work excellent in the rain, pool, hot yoga, etc but the suede footbeds should not get wet and if they do should be dried out fully before putting them on your feet to avoid bacteria. I hope this makes sense. I have gotten them slightly wet if washing dishes and spill water over the sink …. I just place a thick paper towel on the damp or wet spot and step on it to absorb the water and then leave it be till it dries.
@@heidishouse5861 Thank you soooo much for answering. I’ll definitely be back to check out that video on how you clean them. So glad I found your channel because I’ve seen the videos that use baking soda & water to clean theirs and I felt like that wasn’t something I’d wanna do.
@FitBabe I saw a comment by someone on here saying that her birkenstocks stunk, but she also said she wore them at the beach. That might explain why her birkenstocks stink.
Thanks for clearing up the original sole vs padded. Ill keep my original even though its my 1 pair. Long term, i want a nice footbed and good patina. I have the Arizona Birkibuc... should last 10 year's i hope. Im 41 yrs old, time to update from crocs, right?
I learned a lot ty! If I have flatter arches but the sole in the original arch is a little higher, but further up (towards the toe) than where my natural arch is, will that flatten over time to match more closely to where my arch is? the length and width was correct on me so I wouldn’t want to go up or down in size.
It might sound different, but how wide is your foot? I wonder if narrow version is way more narrow than regular, I have some space in my regular ones and I would want them to be a bit more tight and also the narrow version of ones are on the big sale rn so I really wanna get them in narrow version. Can you help me please if they are way more narrow than regular ones. Thank you!
Just got my first pair in black soft bed and heal strap, it’s taking time to brake in right foot, only because my gate is off do to a back injury, isn’t that fascinating🙀😁
Sorry for that but I’m working in birkenstock and I have to tell you that you wearing the wrong size 😅 the Birken have to be bigger try 37 in next time it will be so comfortable thanks ❤❤
I must have high arches, because the soft footbed seems to have not enough arch support for me as compared to the original ones. I ended up selling my soft ones because of this.
So, since you have worn both of the available footbeds, would you say the sizing is the same? I read a lot of reviews where it is said one should size down with the original footbed. I just got the softbed, narrow, they fit fine. Not as comfy as I thought they would be, took about a week before I could wear them more than a few hours. I’m happy with them, but am thinking of getting another pair already….there really isn’t anyone near me that sells them where I can try in person, just DSW, and they only have the softbed ones right now.
Due to the added layer of foam in the soft footbed it can initially make them feel snugger until they break down. Over time I don’t like the support of the soft footbed, but that’s just me. The original sole will take about two weeks to break in but once it does you won’t want to wear anything else LOL. I order multiple pairs either from Birkenstock or Zappos and try on and what fits my foot is for me and the others get returned. Hopefully that helps 😊
@@heidishouse5861 I picked up a new pair of Arizonas (black and gold python, so cute) with the original footbed, the other pair of originals I have have the fleece lining so they are comfy no matter what. Took about a week to break in the new Arizona originals…not as bad as I thought, guess it was because I’ve been wearing the softbed ones. Anyway, you are right. I like the original footbed more. You can feel the contours and firmness much more, and they just feel better. I like both…but probably all future pairs will be the original.
IT HELPED!!!!! I just got a pair of soft footbed, it’s more comfortable out of the box but I know now that they are not going to be as good as my regular ones. If I could get the same color on regular footbed I would! Thank you!
This video was very helpful because I just ordered a regular bed Arizona and began watching video reviews afterwards and was afraid I might have to return them and get a soft sole version. But now I think I'll keep them and go through the breaking process. ✌️
How are you making out through it? The key is making sure the shoe fits correct in length and width. Two weeks or a little more it takes. Don’t give up 🥰
I haven’t tried the vegan, they are on my radar. I would be equally fascinated by any differences people find. I do that the PV ones that are waterproof and LOVE LOVE ❤ THEM
Very interesting.. thankyou for your review, I’ve planing for buy the Madrid big bucket for my narrow feet to. Waiting for your next video about the big bucket in daily use. 😘
🥰 UGH…. Sorry it’s taking so long to get to that one. I have a lot to say about that style too! It’s a great choice for more formal/office wear. Its coming, I promise 🤪😂
@@heidishouse5861 hi.. I’ve buying the madrid big buckle, but it bothers me when I step forward, feels painful on top of my foot. Did you feel the same ? I’m worried about it and planning to return it.
@dessy dee do you have a high instep? I have shallow arches and insteps, so I had no issues with any thing. Perhaps the buckles may not be good on those style Birks if you have a high instep?
Very informative. Hard to find decent reviews and comparisons of Birkenstocks here on UA-cam that aren't done by teenagers using their parents charge card. I've been on the fence about the 'hard vs sole" issue for awhile now. Have the soft sole on my Black Smooth Leather Bostons, but they only get occasional use. Looking to buy the oiled leather in black for more of an everyday shoe. Leaning towards the original sole now, based on what you said about the soft sole " smoothing out" over time. Not sure how the sole on my Black Arizona EVAs compares to either. On a side note, I can't bring myself to spend over $100 for a synthetic upper .It's just my own personal preference. I prefer the quality and durability of leather, and the look as well. The birko Flor Arizona in all black, with the black microfiber insole, looks nice...but at $115...I'm not likely to try them.
The oiled leather I feel is second to none, love the look, and love how you can re-oil the straps. I have the black EVA ones…. I should do a video on that as well. I have so many back logged to edit, ughhhh that’s the problem with being grown up and “not a teenager” …. Finding the time LOL. Once your feet have adjusted to soft sole I feel that the best investment is the high quality leather (whatever leather preferred) and hard sole. It is just the best ortho experience. IMO. Let me know how you make out. Thank you for watching.
Literally my same scenario. I need some black leather bostons for occasional wear. I just don’t like the shininess of the soft bed smooth leather blacks. Are they as shiny in person?
I was a bit confused when you said soft sole as compared to using the term footbed. Sole to me refers to the bottom of a shoe. Footbed I refer to as the inner part of the shoe. All in all I got past that 🥰and was enlightened by what info you gave regarding the sandal. This will be my 2nd pair of Birkenstocks and have purchased soft footbeds each time. Now I know the difference. Good job 🥰.
Thanks Heidi. You are funny to watch. I enjoyed your explanations. I totally agree with your assessments of these different footbeds. I Love Birkenstocks. Been wearing Birks for 35 years! Nothing compares with Birkenstock! You just gotta find the love of their look because once you gain the effects of wearing them, you will totally enjoy & be addicted to the freedom your feet will feel!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Birks have come a long way in style. Although perhaps not cocktail dress worthy …. But I have been known to wear them under my ballgowns on stage during a performance 🤫🤷🏼♀️ I mean who can see…. Haha
Hi. Chardonnay, I suppose, haha! Original footbed only for me, and Arizona all the way. I have a softer footbed in another quality brand sandal and prefer the harder feel footbed. Softer means hotter and not as comfortable in the long run. The break-in is acceptable and worth it for the end result. Regular/wide is possibly too wide and narrow is too narrow for many men. They really need 3 widths to get it right. Wide, regular, and narrow, but they won't change.
Well, I finally got a pair of Bostons with the regular footbed. They have fleece inside and I can still feel how hard the footbed is after one week. Can’t imagine trying to break in a pair without the fleece…but that is what I’m going to do when the oiled leather Bostons I want come back in stock!
I recommend wearing socks the first couple of weeks. The footbed really won’t get much softer but it’s the forming fit and mold that makes it comfortable. The absorption and arch support and correct foot placement is what makes them comfortable.
Do the compare the leather footbeds video (nubuck vs birko). It was interesting how the nubuck floors/footbeds held up much more. Arizona Exquisite Birkenstock's are €180 here in the EU (full nubuck).
The footbeds are all made the same. The suede swatches that cover them come from different batches so the colors can be different and sometimes a slight difference in texture. It’s the upper of the shoe that changes in types of leather or Birkoflor, etc.
I got the original ones , I love them and wear them every day, they have started to look gross though with the big black footprint on the footbed which stinks quite a bit As well.
I bought my first pair with a black leather original footbed and the toe grip is SO uncomfortable 😫 I got them from an orthopedic shoe store and tried multiple on and the shoe guy assured me these are the correct fit (I agree). They are comfortable to stand in but after a few minutes of walking indoors my first 2 or 3 toes hurt! Please tell me that's normal and that it gets better. I really want the benefits of birks and am totally willing to stick it through if needed.
I do have a pair of UGG boots but I have not get to wear them 1-2 weeks out of the year because our winters in south FL are short. LOL I’ve had the same pair for 8 years and they look great!!! But we don’t get snow here maybe that’s why.
very interesting. as a woman with large feet, i always end up having to buy men's shoes and what i saw in my size (that i actually liked) didn't come in the soft sole, so i was sad...but it looks like i may be better off. thank you for sharing!
@angelica maybe try different sites. Birkenstock site carries different sizes sometimes than Zappos, etc. don’t give up. I’m on the opposite end of the spectrum than you, with very small feet. No one ever stocks my size in stores. The frustrations for us women are REAL. Different Feet Same Problem, LOL.
Birkenstocks are Comfortable and I wear them without Socks to Air My Feet Out and I prefer without Socks and Sandals are meant to be worn without Socks and are meant to Air Your Feet Out Do you prefer without Socks or with Socks?
you speak really well, your voice is therapeutic... do you speak another language?? i can tell you are from the southern US.. love the vid you look great btw
@@heidishouse5861 just an update, I bought my first pair of Birks three weeks ago and boy you weren’t kidding about the break in. I’m a slim guy with hardly any natural padding on me lol.
Thank you!
That’s awesome!!!! 🥰🥰🥰
Which color do you mean
@@FWild-eb1rd The patent leather
@@HeidyMargarita thank you :)
@@FWild-eb1rd Welcome. I got the sandcastle in soft bed, highly recommend them!
Nicely explained! Thank you
Thanks. This really helped me.
Don’t give up 🥰
Hey dear your thoughts about vegan vs normal footbed ? Thank you!
I haven’t tried the vegan, they are on my radar. I would be equally fascinated by any differences people find. I do that the PV ones that are waterproof and LOVE LOVE ❤ THEM
Yes pls do a review!!
Thanks for your insights!! Would love to see an on-foot review of the 3 pairs if that's possible. :) Thanks again
Weirdo
Agree! original best though if need it to feel good immediately - soft
Thanks for your review! Super helpful :)
At around 14 min, very astute observation between the two, well done, thanks
❤❤❤🎉
I was a bit confused when you said soft sole as compared to using the term footbed. Sole to me refers to the bottom of a shoe. Footbed I refer to as the inner part of the shoe. All in all I got past that 🥰and was enlightened by what info you gave regarding the sandal. This will be my 2nd pair of Birkenstocks and have purchased soft footbeds each time. Now I know the difference. Good job 🥰.
great catch!!! Believe Birkenstock calls them "soft foot bed" ..., sorry for the confusion. Thank you for watching oxox
Great review update 👍🙂
Haha
You might need some medicine 😂😂😂😂
How much for the soft footbed
I would like to purchase a pair of Birkenstocks
Very informative, thank you!
I got the original ones , I love them and wear them every day, they have started to look gross though with the big black footprint on the footbed which stinks quite a bit As well.
I have video on how to clean them with a suede bar and brush, works great and brings the softness back to the suede.
@@heidishouse5861 I’ll check it out x
There is cleaner and refresher available too.
@@marychialastri2089 I need it , but they gonna keep getting dirty and stinky , I wear them at the beach and gym x
The soft footbeds have less structure overall, particularly the toe grip which is less pronounced right out of the box.
Yes !, I completely agree as I stand here in an original footbed LOL
I bought my first pair with a black leather original footbed and the toe grip is SO uncomfortable 😫 I got them from an orthopedic shoe store and tried multiple on and the shoe guy assured me these are the correct fit (I agree). They are comfortable to stand in but after a few minutes of walking indoors my first 2 or 3 toes hurt! Please tell me that's normal and that it gets better. I really want the benefits of birks and am totally willing to stick it through if needed.
Nice. Please do sane on UGG boots
I do have a pair of UGG boots but I have not get to wear them 1-2 weeks out of the year because our winters in south FL are short. LOL
I’ve had the same pair for 8 years and they look great!!! But we don’t get snow here maybe that’s why.
very interesting. as a woman with large feet, i always end up having to buy men's shoes and what i saw in my size (that i actually liked) didn't come in the soft sole, so i was sad...but it looks like i may be better off. thank you for sharing!
Just get a Nike Offcourt slides ☁️✌️
@angelica maybe try different sites. Birkenstock site carries different sizes sometimes than Zappos, etc. don’t give up. I’m on the opposite end of the spectrum than you, with very small feet. No one ever stocks my size in stores. The frustrations for us women are REAL. Different Feet Same Problem, LOL.
very helpful thnaks
Do you want to sell the soft bed Birkenstocks please let me know
The softbed version is only a thin layer of foam
Thanks, went with the original bed. You look like Margot Robbie
Thank you
Absolute lady of style
are they true to size
Yes.
Yes 😃
I actually like dirty weathered versions
Birkenstocks are Comfortable and I wear them without Socks to Air My Feet Out and I prefer without Socks and Sandals are meant to be worn without Socks and are meant to Air Your Feet Out
Do you prefer without Socks or with Socks?
Do you want to sell your Birkenstocks
you speak really well, your voice is therapeutic... do you speak another language?? i can tell you are from the southern US.. love the vid you look great btw
Very informative video for a prospective first time Birkenstock buyer like me. And btw you kind of look like Margot Robbie lol.
Glad you found it helpful!!! 🥰🥰🥰
@@heidishouse5861 just an update, I bought my first pair of Birks three weeks ago and boy you weren’t kidding about the break in. I’m a slim guy with hardly any natural padding on me lol. I got the original footbed and the oiled leather upper, and after three weeks they’re finally starting to feel broken in and comfortable.
