    Artificial intelligence has already crept into cars, homes, and phones. It’s changed how nations communicate, and it can transform how they wage war. But do we want it to? Maybe not. Here’s the story of how autonomous weapons - those that can select and attack targets without human intervention - have been under development for decades.

    Because robot weapons provide an additional layer of abstraction from home, it's not the threat that these weapons might accidentally commit war crimes that's the issue; it's that these things will be used to commit war crimes and crimes against humanity in a way that we see companies not being held accountable for their actions today, and with the abstraction layer and privatisation of arms it might be impossible to hold anyone to account.

      Nick C while I agree with the mission, I’m not sure about the journalistic delivery. We come to expect limited bias (ideally - in theory) in this format. Something that’s paid for isn’t unbiased. You know?
      At least it’s in the title, it’s not their fault that people may not read it.
      Good content. Great cause.

      Why would a war be fought somewhere so remote if the objective is to obtain a resource? Say you want to annex Ukraine. Why sent little micro drones to ram into each other in space in stead of sending autonomous tanks to occupy the capital. If you're fighting for an oil field then why fight under water instead of pushing to secure the location from enemy combatants.

    - How does the internet work? (Who controls it, how do websites get paid and where does that money come from)
    - the 2008 crisis explained
    - What makes tv shows (or anything else) profitable for a tv network (where does the money from and how do they pay for new tv shows and movies etc.)
    - The future of steaming (what will it do to the future of the small screen)
    - The dangers of AI (like Sophia the robot, why did they create them and why do we 'need' them)
    - How certain movies have influenced the way we live today

We need politicians who have both, legal AND scientific knowledge. Atleast to a certain extent. Or we will KEEP having privacy, security, militiary and other issues.

      Why do people always jump to genocide when we talked AI in weapons. There's no money in genocide and autonomous weapons cost a lot to make and operate. You didn't seem to think about the lives spared from PTSD either. AI can help reduce the number of military personal traumatized by what they had to do. (yes this also applies to drone pilots, not just foot soldiers).

    • @iruns1246
      @iruns1246 6 років тому +8

      Stefan Randa, but removing PTSD is likely to remove remorse from the ones using them, and thus making it easier to do indiscriminate slaughter of people. Which one is harder? Enlisting and training people who are willing to do indiscriminate murders and won't testify against you even if you clearly violate international laws, or producing and operating a bunch of killer drones that will do anything you say and have erasable memories.

    • @SomebodyPerfectly
      @SomebodyPerfectly 6 років тому +7

      "There's no money in genocide" /// "autonomous weapons cost a lot (of tax-dollars) to make"........Jesus, sorry but you definitly aren't qualified to argue this topic.
      You realize that in fact the "US-military-industrial-complex" (Eisenhower's word-creation) is making TRILLIONS to devise and build technology that has ZERO use apart from murdering/terrorizing foreign populations to creating a more favorable geo-political situation for the US??
      (So basically trillions to give the US-Government the possibility to commit genocides. I don't go that far, but a valid claim is that at this point the US doesn't sell and produce weapons to fight wars....but fights wars to justify selling and producing weapons.)
      Did you know, that Israel is making billions testing state of the art bombs / riot gear / security measurements (fx. nude-scans for airports) on palestinian civilians?
      This made "practice tested on soft targets" a label that sells like "made in Germany".
      This definitly dwarfs the issue of veteran-PTSD.
      Speaking about which: Have you ever considered VICTIM PTSD, not only CULPRIT PTSD?

    • @sonicpsycho13
      @sonicpsycho13 6 років тому +2

      Automated systems and drones take can spare the lives and psyches of troops, but at the same time it can make it easier to wage indiscriminate war and attacks.
      If you have a weapon that won't put our own troops into harm's way, then we're more likely to use it, especially instead of trying other avenues, like negotiations or non-intervention. And the problem with nationalism and tribalism is that we tend to see targets and not people.
      "When your only tool is a hammer, everything begins to look like a nail."

    Autonomous weapons are controlled by the human by rules of engagement (ROE's). These can limit what an autonomous system targets based on location and other factors and can require human consent. So the issue isn't so much as whether one has autonomous weapons but what ROE's oen employs to restrict their autonomy.

The decision to kill or not is not the machines decision, but the people who developed the weapon to make it fire automatically upon anyone trespassing. Like perfectly obedient dogs they do exactly as we tell them. And this wouldn't be any different from human soldiers as they are also trained to do exactly what they're told.

    Landmines are great at that, over 100 years later people are still finding them, actively and accidentally.

    i dont really know, please correct me if im wrong, and/or give me youre opinion to this thougt: Autonomus warfare can decrease human casulties if done right. A programm dont go in rage oder Kills out of fear for his own Life. so If you Programm them to follow the Geneva conventions a Robot is more humane, because it doesent feel negative emotions like Anger or hate? (please excuse the Bad grammar/spelling im from Germany and Not as fluent in the Englisch language as i Wish i would be)

    Humans are pretty good at 'just carrying out functions' too though. The people who bombed Dresden weren't psychos. Robots could even be less flexible, as they might have idealistic coding and don't take revenge.

      but pilots is irreplaceable while AI can be copied indefinitely so there might be more war (more bombing of innocent civilians) if AI is available.

    Considering how grave human atrocities have been in the past, I’m honestly not too scared about autonomous weapons. They’re not subject to the human emotions which can at times often cause accidents/atrocities; fear, confusion, rage etc. If autonomous weapons were given specific input not to kill unarmed people, then in all honestly they could potentially do more good than harm. This assertion that if it’s not a human which pulls the trigger it will immediately violate some form of ethics or instantly cause civilian deaths just remember - 800,000 people died through getting hacked to death by their fellow human beings in less than 100 days (Rwandan Genocide)
