I was taught by my father that you never come to a stop if you're driving through water (assuming it's no deeper than 10-12 inches deep). If you stop, it allows water to go up and flood your intake. By keeping steady gas pressure and forward movement, you can make it through. I did this in Bethany, OK, in a Nissan Sentra in the 1990's with no problem.

I kept going forward at an even, slow pace as you describe, and my little Saturn made it through because the wake created stayed away from the exhaust. Scary, though!

Those same areas always flood with heavy rains. It is Florida and people should know how to drive in that type of weather. Most people living here are know how to deal with heavy rain.
