  • Mourning Dove Family - Part 1 (Nesting, laying and egg care)
    Part 1 of a two-part educational series about the nesting behavior of mourning doves. Follow our mourning dove pair, Ward and June, through nest construction, egg-laying and egg care. Filmed with an inexpensive USB web cam connected to my computer. The events depicted are as nature directed, not me. I simply recorded it in the form of hundreds of hours of video footage, with a remote camera so that human interference is kept to a minimum. Many of my viewers ask me about the doves nesting in their yards, because mourning doves will nest just about anywhere.
    THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THIS FILM IS TO SHOW YOU WHAT'S HAPPENING IN YOUR DOVE NEST, SO YOU WON"T DISTURB YOUR BIRDS. Please watch my films instead of approaching, looking into or trying to photograph your nest! Thank you. Teachers, please feel free to use this video content in the classroom.
    To see the 2nd half of the story, stay tuned for Mourning Dove Family - Part 2 • Mourning Dove Family -...

    I wish people can watch videos like these and realize the presence of birds and their nests are not a nuisance but rather a blessing.

      YOU ARE RIGHT. I Travelled and one of the windows in my inner room was left half opened. When I returned back after 2 weeks, I realized that they have started building nest for laying eggs. My Sister and my gf wanted to drive them away but I refused and I decided to let them be and they layed 2 eggs and hatch 2 beautiful nestlings. I couldn't have been more glad I allowed them to have their peace and shared my window with me 😇

      I was pleasantly surprised yesterday to find an egg on my hanging potted plant. Friday morning I was startled by a dove flying away when I was getting ready to water my plants. I decided to skip the plant and so glad I did. The next morning, we discovered an egg. I'm so excited to take a peek tomorrow. Maybe there will be 🥚🥚. This just sooooo endearing and heart-warming.

      The Holy Ghost is like a dove. Ho. I am a Christian that has the faith of Jesus and keep the commandments of God. Sadly, hellfire will be filled with false Christians who did not repent but continued going to church on sunday, Christmas, Easter, January 1st. Stop being a rebellious witch and a stubborn idolater. If you reject the word of God, you will not reign as a king under King Jesus. 1 Samuel 15:23, Revelation 1. We both know that God only saved Noah and his family from the flood. God also only saved Lot and his daughters from Sodom. Remember that our Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God and upon this rock of truth, he founded the church. Let us not go back to the weak and beggarly elements of Christmas, Easter, sunday, friday, January 1st, etc. Let us go on to perfection. In the new earth, we shall worship God in his sabbaths and new moons. No idolater that worships every sunday, friday, Christmas, Easter, January 1st, etc will be there. Again, no idolater or rebellious witch will be in the new earth. Judge Jesus and the Gentiles kept the sabbaths, new moons and holy days.

      I completely agree with you! These birds are just starting their own family like all of us, Humans do! They usually find the best sites that offer better security, shelter, support and warmth so they can safely raise their babies! They are very much like what we usually do to help protect our own family, including babies!👍👍😁❤️❤️❤️

    When I was very little, Grandpa told me about mourning doves after I asked about hearing the most beautiful sound when waking up. I heard him say "morning doves" make those sweet cooing sounds!!! Grandpa had a gentle caring spirit & he'd feed birds & squirrels would come up to him on the porch to take peanuts from his hand!!! Mourning doves always remind me of him & Grandma.

      When she laid the first egg on June 1, I named her June. The rest of the names were a natural progression from there, especially since mourning doves almost always have broods of 2. It was sad when the "star" left the show prematurely, though.

    Ward and June, I love it. The coo of Mourning Doves is my favorite, as a child and for 18 years right outside my bedroom window in a huge Arborvitae tree Mourning Doves nested there all those years and I was greeted by their beautiful and mournful calling, it always brings back wonderful memories when I see or hear them now.

We love love love Mourning Doves we feed a community of at least 60 they were born in our yard for at least 12 years we were not really familiar on how these wonderful beautiful souls are until I lost my job then we found our true love for birds, having a job takes away from the true meaningful and beautiful small and great things in life we were to stressed all the time now we go around feeding wild doves in at least 5 corners in our city, we include vitamins and DE added on food to remove mites on their bodies. Bird lovers here!!

      Ward is showing a submissive stance, I believe he's showing June what he wants her to do. It's what the female does when the male arrives bringing nesting material. The female gets flat in the nest, and does rapid little wing flaps, and the male stands on her back as he delivers a stick from his beak to hers. Then she incorporates it into the nest.

    I have a pair of mourning doves nesting in a pepper tree in our garden. My very first time to see the mother feed her chicks yesterday. They always make noise before feeding the babies. It’s fun to quietly observe them every early morning and evening from the window.

    • @Weird_Old_Uncle_Kenny
      @Weird_Old_Uncle_Kenny  3 роки тому +1

      They coo before feeding the babies to condition the babies to expect feeding after the coo. Then the parents begin cooing from outside the nest. This is how they lure them to leave the nest. Once they do leave it's also how the parents gather them together to show them where to find food, water, and a safe place to roost at night.

      They have been in the San Fernando Valley for a very long time, they are native. However, mourning doves are being replaced in many places in the U.S. by the Eurasian Collared Dove, which is an invasive species. They look very similar, but the coos sound significantly different. The Collared doves don't seem to be as eager or comfortable to nest in flower pots as the mourning doves!

    I had a pair nest on my patio umbrella solar panel. They couldn’t get the sticks to stay so I bought a nesting box form them. They had 2 eggs on Memorial Day weekend so I named the babies Freedom and Liberty. They were so cute. Then one morning out of now where a Coopers hawk came and got the babies when I was asleep. I was so sad, as were the parents. They came back and he coo’d and coo’d all day while the mom came and went looking for the babies. They hung around for another week then they started spending the night again on Saturday. I knew we had more eggs! I was so excited. Then that Tuesday morning I woke up to no birds (again)! I walked out to the patio and there were feathers everywhere. That hawk came back again and took the Mom! So sad. I immediately went to see if there were eggs and there were! I took them and they are now being incubated with a bird person. I’m hoping for the 2 babies to be born on the 4th of July. I’ll call them 3rd and 4th. Lol. I’m so sad not to have them around anymore but I took the box down as I can’t stand to see them get killed. Any suggestions to ward off a hawk would be great! Meantime the Dad comes and visits my patio from time to time now. I loved this video. It reminded me of my experience only with a better outcome! 🥰

    • @Weird_Old_Uncle_Kenny
      @Weird_Old_Uncle_Kenny  3 роки тому

      Sorry to hear that. The only defense I can think of against a predator that knows where the doves are nesting is to provide a better, safer location, such as a hanging basket like mine up under an eave. The hawks will be less likely to see the nest, and less comfortable flying in - also don't give the hawk a perch on or next to the nest to land and dine from. I'd be happy to give you some tips, just ask. Also, if you provide food or water, do it completely out of view of the nest, such as on the opposite side of the house. Predators are drawn to birds and rodents eating bird seed, you don't want them to also see the nest. The doves will find the food no matter where you put it. I wish you luck!

    This is great footage Uncle Kenny. If only more human families get the importance of parenthood! Love how Ward approved (cause he is the leader) and helps out.

      Thanks for watching! Sorry, I don't know much about what's best to feed them. Perhaps someone else on here can chime in on this subject?

      We live in central Minnesota and as of today with the snow storm, I counted 14 mourning doves, they've been eating Black Oiled Sunflower seeds and White Millet. I have a spot that I keep clear of snow, what I have noticed is they will swallow both seeds whole and eat small pieces of gravel. I hope this helps

    a mother mourning dove has a nest on our balcony when we moved in. The bird had two eggs and when they hatched we ( me and my sister ) named the babies, but then the babies grew up and we had to say goodbye to them.

One of them flies away to get sticks and the other sits in the pot..we didnt expect them to make a nest there at all lol but I love birds..I think they are so beautiful and peaceful and hope they have healthy baby doves!!

    There is a pair of doves in my backyard. The rest are cardinals, sparrows, blue jays, and chickadees. Usually in the morning or evening is when I take my bird feeders out and I see them just near by on my fence looking my direction while I'm hanging up all the feeders. So far they are the only birds who have stayed while I'm out there. The rest of the birds fly away and don't return until I have left. Makes me happy when birds stay around while I'm outside. 😊

    How can you tell the difference? I was watching the part 5 of your last dove videos and the babies were crying for food. When I looked out of my patio I had what seemed one hundred birds on my driveway. They must have heard the video. It was crazy!!

      Good question! The parents are virtually identical, visually, and I can't really tell them apart on sight alone. I have 2 main ways to tell the parents apart: coo and time of day. The male does almost all the cooing and calling, and he has a very developed "voice". When the female does make a coo, it is much higher in pitch, and not as well developed.
      The female is always the one who stays on the nest with the eggs or babies overnight. If I film all day, I can count parent swaps.

      This pair? No, they were good mates and good parents. However, the previous occupants of this nest weren't as good at either. The female looked very young, inexperienced. The male looked old, as if he had lost his first wife (they mate for life). He had the hardest time getting her to stay in the nest. He'd coax her there, but a few minutes after he would leave, so would she. When she finally laid a clutch of eggs, they took turns caring for them, but one morning she left the nest unattended before the dad came to take over the day shift, and a western scrub jay flew in and stole one egg, and returned a few minutes later for the other one. Less than a week later, she laid another egg in the same nest. Again, she left it unattended one morning, and again a jay came and stole it. She laid another pair of eggs, and everything was going fine. The eggs were within a day or 2 of hatching, and again she abandoned them one morning, and again the jay came and took them away. She just wasn't ready to raise a family. Like dove birth control. It was pretty frustrating for a filmmaker who wanted to document the life cycle of nesting mourning doves! Luckily, that pair then abandoned the nest, I cleaned it out, and Ward and June moved in very soon afterward.
