Giovanni is such a grounded and relatable villain. His motives are simple but effective. Honestly his depiction in the Adventures Manga is probably the best iteration of the character, it shows how calculated he was as a villain with multiple plans of attack and was a fantastic foil to Red.

What makes Giovanni the best villain in Pokemon is that he has a lot of quality and lacks a lot of defaults that the other antagonists has :
-he doesn't have a plan that can backfire like Archie and Maxie
-he has a better control of his emotions and has multiple human interaction that he can understand unlike Cyrus
-he is saner and doesn't throw a tamper tantrum when his plans gets destroyed unlike Ghetsis
-he is insensitive unlike Lysandre who cares too much about pokemon, and doesn't care about the future of the world
-he didn't loose his sanity due to trauma and toxins like Lusamineisn't or controlled by someone else like Guzma
-he has patience and executes his plan when it really is the right time to do so unlike Rose
-he's not dead unlike Sada and Turo (lmao)
But most importantly he doesn't have a tragic backstory that forced him to become the leader of a criminal organization, he was just a simple trainer like you and me in his youth and one day, he went "hey, what if I do a little trolling", he's just evil because he likes it and he doesn't care

When I think about Giovanni, I think a pure villain for the sake of being evil and nothing more. A lot of cartoon or anime want to give you a backstory of why someone is the way they are but not Pokémon and I actually like that fact, he is the kind of guy you love to hate. Even the name "Giovanni" rings like a mafia ring boss that no one should mess with or if you do, you will be buried. Never change Giovanni, he is one of the greatest antagonists ever.

    • @GatorEX
      @GatorEX  9 місяців тому +27

Yeah, I’m glad they don’t really dive into a backstory because he doesn’t necessarily need one. I know in Pokémon Origins, there was a brief moment that wasn’t really a flashback, but just kind of showed that he once was a kid similar to Red, but I think it doesn’t really take away from him. I feel like the idea of Giovanni is that he’s a villain for the sake of it and is what Red needs to overcome. But it can definitely be inferred that he wants to control Kanto and doesn’t want to give that up because he grew up there. Sort of a reading between the lines thing. But yeah, I’m glad they never straight up showed any kind of “incident” that “made him a villain.”

I haven't played kanto or johto, but I think it's because team rocket's goal of stealing pokemon is extremely broad. Pretty much every other evil team relies on a legendary pokemon so their plans are thwarted the second you catch/defeat it, but you can't really undo multiple instances of theft in one fell swoop.
Similarly in bw2, it's shown that the old team plasma is still working to methodically return pokemon to their owners one by one because defeating n and ghetsis obviously wouldn't fix that issue. It's honestly really interesting to see the lasting effects of an evil team's activities because it shows how deeply entrenched they were in their respective regions which adds to their intimidation factor.

What makes Giovanni a great villain is the fact that he can't be stopped, only delayed. By now, it's well established that the main games and certain spin-offs are all a shared world, so while Kanto and Johto are close enough together to have certain effects on one another and for Team Rocket to be active in both, it's not out of the question for him to go to Sinnoh or even Paldea and try to do the same as he had in Alola after Kanto. And he wasn't fazed by losing in Alola, he privately commended the young trainer who defeated him and used his multiversal travel to go to a different world to try again. And since we know there are universes where the other villain team leaders up to then won, it's not out of the question to assume he has or will eventually, too. He keeps coming back with new plans or new approaches to the same ones as before and yes, "How many times do we have to teach you this lesson, old man?", but at the same time, Ghetsis stopped once being defeated, Archie and Maxie, Cyrus, Lysandre they were all defeated by similar young trainers and stopped pursuing their ambitions, but Giovanni, after an apparent sabbatical, did not. Granted, we didn't know until USUM that anyone had access to any technology whatsoever that allows people to traverse the multiverse or that he'd even be back at all, but given his involvement with the creation of MewTwo, are we really surprised that the scientists he funded made such breakthroughs or some Team Rocket holdouts stole it for him from someone who had? Are we certain he won't be back again? Maybe after losing in Alola, he went on to succeed at his ambitions in whatever world he went to. We don't know, and that's terrifying, and that makes Giovanni a great villain.

  • @----x-----

I like that he's a realistic threat, he's not a clown trying to flood the world or undo reality or end all life. He just wants money and power and knows has many means of obtaining it like controlling illegal trade, gambling and using advanced science. All over the game you see Rocket recruiting or running some shady business or just taking over any place by force. Team Rocket runs Kanto. It's interesting that Kanto lacks a powerful regional legendary like all other regions and instead Giovanni basically just created one with science, lacking any big leyends , aliens or ancient powers Kanto is tied to human science and Mewtwo Giovanni and Kanto are connected.

Good stuff, he definitely became a favourite villain of mine recently. Though one thing I feel you could have talked about a bit more in my opinion is his portrayal in Masters. What I really love there is that he is not necessarily the one that rules over the other villains, but that he's more or less the agitator that will lure them out of their good habits and back into their bad ones. I really love the way they made him an opportunist that gladly creates his own opportunities, and one that does things like cynically bonding with violent Pokémon to draw the worst out of them as a way to invert the "power of friendship" idea.

  • @pokefan7446

My thoughts on Giovanni seem to line up pretty well with yours.
I never played the Kanto games, having grown up with Gen 4 and, by the point Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee had come out, I was starting to get sick of the Gen 1 stuff, meaning I never saw Giovanni in his original story. However, after obtaining him in Masters, I quickly started to enjoy him from a character standpoint. Unlike most of the other evil team villains that are either just so stubborn that they won’t be convinced to stop their plan or so stubborn that they ignore VERY obvious problems, Giovanni is…one of the few characters to BE extremely competent. Even though he sees you as an obstacle, his interactions with you are never emotionally charged, and he even offers advice. Heck, one of my favourite lines of his from Masters is him going "It's good that we all want different things. That’s how things get done in business. The world should be full of different opinions and viewpoints.", which a fair few evil team leaders could stand to learn,
However, the more that Giovanni has been pushed to be some manipulative mastermind, the more I can’t help but feel that it is at the expense at the other evil teams by making them less competent. Especially when it comes to the Villain Arc in Masters, where there were numerous cases of the evil teams just being stupid (An Aether Foundation uprising because they didn’t think to ask Lusamine for a raise? Really?), or just being completely irrelevant (The Kalos Villain Arc having "Team Flare" commit villainous deeds with the main cast wondering why they were doing so, only to find out they were just all Team Rocket grunts in disguise.). Granted, I enjoyed SOME of his scenes in the Villain Arcs, like his business-partner-like interactions with Rose, and how he was able to sway Hoopa to work alongside him due to his experience in trying to wield berserk Pokémon, but it ticked me off seeing how much a lot of the story was forced to be a "Team Rocket was behind it all along", rather than "Team Rocket is trying to adapt to ongoing events."
Tl;dr, enjoy Giovanni as a character, but I prefer him when he’s interacting with people or reacting to events rather than secretly causing the events from the shadows because Giovanni has to be able to manipulate every evil team leader. Let me see more "experienced businessman with a knack for working unforeseen circumstances to his advantage" and less "Giovanni and his 4 goons with minimal personality (excluding Petrel) are the only competent evil team and are completely untraceable."

    • @ChangedMyNameFinally69
      @ChangedMyNameFinally69 9 місяців тому +2

I'd prefer the bland admins over the morons the evil team leaders usually are. Rocket can play the other dipshits like fiddles because most of their members are either crazy people (especially the leaders) or they act like goofy dumbasses (think of Galactic in particular). Rocket were never hard to beat either but they had a way more threatening aura, their members just felt like genuinely mean nasty people instead of comic book goons in dumb outfits LARPing as supervillains (looking at you Plasma). They also just have a cooler aesthetic. Giovanni is like an actual smart person and not just some weirdo in a costume.

Giovanni in Pokemon Masters is actually incredibly well written in my opinion. He’s very calm and calculated and acts a lot in the background, manipulating teams to do his work. For example, he manipulates Ghetsis into luring N to fuse Kyurem and Zekrom, but ultimately tries to steal both while betraying Ghetsis. Similarly he secretly partners with Chairman Rose to steal Sync Stone data from Professor Bellis and is ultimately betrayed. But his constant presence adds so much depth to the villain arcs.
But even when he does act, it grounds him as a person in a really cool way. Like as he’s chasing N and Ghetsis, Silver steps in and tells Giovanni to stop or he’ll have to go through him, and Giovanni ends up calling off the operation. Or in his own villain arc, he only gets away because he forms a real bond with his Mewtwo letting it mega evolve. At heart he’s still a trainer, and it’s really cool seeing him actually feel like an underground crime lord instead of just a recurring trainer fight.

When I first saw the trailer of the Galar villain arc in Pokémon Masters, I started seeing jokes about how it felt like Chairman Rose is going to have better character development in a mobile game than in Sword/Shield. That's when I started thinking about the villainous organizations of the past and how they tend to have ties to certain world-ending scenarios, making them pretty over-the-top. I also often read sentiments online about how, compared to the villains nowadays, Team Rocket is pretty grounded because they're just ordinary evil people. Giovanni doesn't have an ecological agenda, or a vision of a perfect world, or an obsession for otherworldly beings. He just wants to abuse pokémon for profit. That's what makes him pretty threatening despite not having ties to legendary pokémon that can easily end the world. (Yes, Mewtwo is strong, but it's not like it's going to destroy all of Kanto.) You can't talk him out of his shenanigans because you can't change his mind. You have no choice but to fight him because he is set in his ways. You can't just make him understand that he is in the wrong because he already knows that. He just doesn't care.
And that's when I started thinking about Chairman Rose. When it comes to pretty grounded villains, he's the closest to Giovanni in my opinion. What could possibly be the spiritual successor of a power-hungry mob boss? Probably a billionaire with almost unlimited resources to do whatever he thinks is best for everyone and would not be deterred by anyone who disagrees with him. That's the potential of Chairman Rose in my eyes. He is also a man with so much influence and control over the region where he operates and he is also pretty set in his ways so you have no choice but to fight him because talking wouldn't make him budge. But both Sword/Shield and Pokémon Masters fell short of that expectation. Rose hasn't really been able to get even close to how cool of a villain Giovanni is.

While not my absolute favorite villain in the series (N and Cassiopeia currently take that title), Giovanni is still high on the list for how down to earth he feels as a villain.
He's not a stark raving mad supervillain like most of his big name associates. He's an oyabun, a don; a man who simply wants to accumulate wealth and power through many possible avenues. This broad goal means that even after the most costly defeat, he can just lay low or move on to a different operation for the time being. Evil is a business to Giovanni, and he is the Chairman of the Board.

I deleted Pokémon Masters EX so I'm going to do some internet searching to expand on my thoughts.
I really started connecting with Giovanni when I did the little character stories with him (Not the main villain events) the mostly one where you unlock a character and talk to em on the beach etc.
The down to earth parts, him taking over the world doesn't make any sense, but setting up operations anywhere he ends up, does make sense.
...I can't find the exact lines but the way I took em is that his views on Pokémon are not necessarily wrong... more extreme and he was telling our main character something he wouldn't understand until he got older.... maybe it's his evil leader charisma at work 😂
Giovanni felt like a real person in a not so real world... he stood out among other characters because of that.
Even still it wasn't jarring because of the darker parts of Pokémon always hidden in the text.
Also Giovanni is a Yakuza Boss
It's becomes more interesting because I always forget he has a son in Silver.... why would he Abandon the person who is going to inherit team rocket like he did from his mother(Madame Boss) in the anime cannon🤔
The organization is even structured at a basic level like a Yakuza. He has Admins and Lieutenants.....
oooooh I wonder... is Lieutenant surge a foreigners or a ex Team rocket member..... does Japanese military have that rank?
I'm just rambling at this point but that tie in to Japanese culture also makes me like Giovanni as well.

If Ash is going to battle Giovanni and put an end to the entire Team Rocket organization, Ash must make an ally out of Silver. If Ash can make Silver his ally, there is a possibility that Silver might help Ash bring down the entire Team Rocket organization.
Also, by the time Ash meets Silver, he is already a Interpol and he is the apprentice of Looker. For you see, Silver is working for Looker training to be a Interpol like him and he is Looker's apprentice.

Skull, Yell, and Star are more so gangs that hang out rather than evil teams
Lusamine’s characters has the most fluctuation, either being depicted as “psychotic woman”, “mother willing to sacrifice anything to protect her kids”, or “mother just trying to do her best” with the Aether Foundation being a legitimate Pokémon preservation organisation that is prone to being mishandled for Lusamine’s ulterior motives (May they be good or bad)
And lastly being Giovanni and Ghetsis, both wanting power but doing do in different angles, Giovanni usually dealing with his criminal activities like a business, Ghetsis treating his organisation like a cult who’s soul purpose is to serve him (or whoever he is wishing to puppeteer)

It's time for my Giovanni rant.
I've always found Giovanni to be one of the lesser Villains of the series not because of his narrative purpose, but due to his portrayal by the fans and later games in the series. In my opionion Giovanni has become more 2 dimensional than what he started out as.
You'd think Giovanni has always had materialistic goals with no real reason to yearn for power other than power's sake which is what Ghetsis described in USUM. "He is a man of pure evil", but this is where I draw my issues. The Original Giovanni and the Remakes Giovanni weren't ultimate evil genius super villains. They were predators that preyed on the weak using status and superior numbers. He's cowardly, neglectful and completely full of himself, but a really good businessman.
After Team Rocket fell in Kanto HE RAN AWAY. He ran away from the gym, his organization and his son because in his eyes they weren't worth much. Organization is how he amasses power and without it he's just a coward despite his 8th Gym leader status. He wasn't even willing to come back to the remains of Team Rocket until the Goldrenrod takeover where has was beaten by Gold (who thanks to Celebi was in the right place and time) and wasn't seen again.
In USUM Giovanni was essentially assassinated and replaced with a 2nd Ghetsis without the mental breakdown. He'll just continue until there is no more to conquer because he has the power to do it. If it were an HGSS Giovanni that lost he'd be vastly upset and upon the Rainbow Rocket castle dissapearing he'd hot foot it out of there because in his eyes without grunts he's powerless. What actually happens in USUM is he basically just goes "Understandable, have a nice day" and then dips to the next world in a si ilar fashion to him being defeated at Silph Co. The only issue here is HE LOST EVERYTHING and just treated it like a bump in the road when that's not how he behaves at all.
In conclusion, Giovanni was never "That Guy" like what people and USUM like to remember him as whish isn't a bad thing. It makes him more interesting than a "I'm evil because that's what I do!" mustache-twirling style villain.

  • @qwefg3
    @qwefg3 21 день тому

For me he is quite simply put... a simple villain.
He is a criminal in all of it's simple, yet effective glory.
On the small scale it is the minions you run into being given low power or value pokemon as they commit the low end crimes. The hustlers, the thieves, the crooks, the illegal sellers and so forth. The stronger the pokemon the higher ranking or more important the job is that they are doing and even if you beat them all... it isn't enough or important enough to get the big man's attention.
On the more grand or personal scale it is how he pulls off each plan and piece.
When he attempts to get the Master Ball it is the first and seemingly only pokeball with a 100% catch rate... so he personally gets involved to ensure that the mission is a success. He captures an entire town by blocking off their communication with the outside world. He has a gym leader on his own island build the world's stronger pokemon because he can't catch the real one and thinks that simply overwhelming it with numbers would make it weak enough to capture.
He only gets annoyed at the player for stopping the higher level crimes and you get the idea he went for the master ball to capture Mewtwo.
Then when you go into Anime, Manga, or side material you get the various version that can be done with how simple, yet effective this outline is... especially when compared to the other villains we got afterwards.
Making volcanos erupt for more land? Rising the ocean levels? Deleting all of reality in the hopes you can remake it from scratch? punching holes in reality or utilizing a machine to capture pokemon from a possible past or future?
Grand schemes, complex schemes, crazy ones... and yet... someone being a crime boss seems more grounded, realistic, and more likely to happen... and harder to stop as stopping a few criminals doesn't dismantle an empire. Getting rid of a few goons cutting pokemon tails off or robbing a place doesn't stop the criminals doing the same someplace else.

Honestly, i rarely thought deeply about the antagonists. But, Giovanni is the most iconic for sure. The games told his story in a more abstract way. It kinda never ended in the main anime, with his power struggles. Though the Origins anime sees him have a change of heart, which was a bit weird. Never saw the manga.
As possibly the first major twist in the original games, it was quite impressive. I never understood all the implications myself.

Giovanni is complicated. He has an obvious love of just being evil and will do whatever it takes to get what he wants and views pokemon as simply tools...yet he's managed to gain the undying loyalty of his underlings who even view themselves as tools to be used by him,he has a pet persian who he once saved and shows clear affection towards, his ideal that pokemon are just tools leads him to taking good care of them because you have to take care of your tools for them to work properly, his relationship with mewtwo (in the universes where he still has him) is more of a twisted business partnership where both get what they want (him power and mewtwo gets strong opponents to fight) and in the anime it is revealed that his reason for wanting world domination is to bring order to the chaos of the pokemon world. Mix all that with the fact that his mother was the leader of team rocket before him and his ability to speak in philosophical terms about morality (such as not everything a bad person does is bad) and you have a very complicated man that is hard to pin down just what he's all about.

so Giovanni is almost like the anti-christ of the Pokémon world. instead of living with Pokémon and creating bonds with them. he only uses and sees Pokémon as tools and doesn't develop any kind of bond with them.
What I love about Pokémon is that this feels like a real world. It isn't exactly like our world but it also doesn't feel unrealistic. from a chirstian perspective, Pokémon is very interesting for me to think about. For Christians, our goal is to live a holy life like Jesus did when he was on earth. we do this because the Father himself is a holy being. the end goal for this lifestyle is for us to be like Jesus, be loving people who love each other as brothers and sisters. This is how God wants us to live our lives.
I feel that Pokémon has a similar thing going on but instead of the goal being loving each other, I think the goal has to do with the bonds between humans and Pokémon. Arceus is the God of the Pokémon world and I believe he has a clear goal for how he wants people and Pokémon to live. the games make it clear that Arceus wants humans and Pokémon to interact with each other and live with each other, help and support each other and ultimately create bonds with one another. the games also make it clear that there is a special power that exists within the bonds that trainers share with their Pokémon, it gives their Pokémon powers that exists beyond the capabilities of the Pokémon themselves.
violating the bonds between humans and Pokémon is probably like a sin in Pokémon because of the underlying signification of its existence. Giovanni is a man who has no regards for the bonds that Pokémon have with their trainers. this bond is probably what makes it possible for Pokémon to be willing to put themselves in harms way for their trainers, regardless if they are good or evil.
