Sam and Max: Tell Don't Show

- Sam and Max have crafted an extremely unique identity, which is largely characterised by their dialogue. In this video, we'll examine how they achieve this through their absurdly complicated, but artful exposition.

i just want you to know that i hold this video very near and dear to my heart, haha. the analysis is fantastic and all, but there’s also this ever-present warm and cozy vibe throughout its whole 6 minutes of runtime. the editing, music, commentary - everything flows really smoothly, and you even made me forget about my worries (if only for a little while, but that in and of itself is quite the achievement!). it’s just flowing with care and sincerity, which makes it pretty hard not to love it. i’d love to elaborate further, but i’m afraid i can’t quite put everything into words. anyways, thanks a bunch for the upload. i look forward to rewatching it, and seeing whatever you decide to create in the future. ⭐️
hey, thanks very much! This is really the best response I could've asked for. There are so many videos that occupy a similarly special place for me so It's really inspiring to hear something I made has had that impact on someone else. I made this video 4 years ago and I can't believe people are still watching, re-watching and commenting on it. I'm not the best at youtube or being online in general, but reading your comment really makes me want to get back into it. Even though 1,000 subscribers may seem small to some, it's by far the biggest audience I've ever had and I'm extremely grateful that anyone takes the time to hear what I have to say.
Thank you Pond and thank you to anyone else for giving my videos a shot :)

I would legit sacrifice half life 3 just so Sam & Max could continue.
Tada
@@ermant7285 can't believe that actually worked.
@@ThatManiacbucket yeah, vr for sam n max and half life
@@ermant7285 hope it comes out to ps vr honestly
@@ThatManiacbucket Yeah and now remakes for the three telltale games, heres hoping we get brand new ones too
Sam and Max needs a reboot like how Animaniacs did. The show and games are just so unbelievably funny, and have aged really well
Yes I'd love that.
we need it.
*we all need it.*
well, beyond time and space got remade (I just got to episode 5 of it earlier, and ngl I didn't know that telltale made sam and max games when I first booted it up)
I wouldn't say reboot, because Sam and Max don't strike me as the type of franchise to go for something like that. Like the video puts it best, they're always moving on to the next thing, a reboot wouldn't be necessary. Just start a new animated series with the next freshly baked batch of insanity that the characters will face or be the cause of, the adventures just keep on coming if the writers do a great job, and honestly? They always do, somehow!
Disney could get Fox or ABC to revive the series but I'd prefer a Pixar movie tied to Lucasfilm.
In short(er): Sam and Max feel like people that existed before the show started and that still exist when it's over. Their constant references to things that happened off screen, things the viewer didn't get to see, helps really make them feel like people with history together! It's also a great, if unintentional, running joke when it comes to their constant 4th wall breaking. They're constantly being self referential, which leaves the audience out of the joke, yet anything they say is totally believable to you cause you're watching them in real time ruin everything.
"if you cut out this page"
sure, lemme just cut up this 200$ used almost 900$ new collectors book...
lol yeah pretty crazy, although I feel like cutting up a rare collector's item to make a slightly amusing flipbook is very Max
Man i cant even find it, let alone for 200$!
@@MattMakesAnimation i literally came here to type this, you are true to your passion
You know, there is still such a thing as a photocopier
@@StagFiesta For some reason they haven't reissued the books.
They just don't care about the fans.
Also on a unrelated matter, The fandom wiki is saying Sam & Max are married even knowing they are canonically not married in anyway.
People don't understand gay jokes.
What's even more interesting is, they have a new V.R. game coming out in 2021 and although its footage seems like an early build, it's proof the series is very much alive!
ooh yeah, wish i could play it!
That game better have a scene where you defeat a low-poly dragon with a single swing of a sword and then pull a key out of his heart!
@@MattMakesAnimation 0:46: You could've said "Sam and Max is anything BUT Lazy and Uninteresting", because their expositions are filled with tall tales of fun adventures.
I hope thatz not the same game what got canceled...
It’s sad that these two haven’t returned for basically a decade. Last time they were relevant were in Poker Night 2.
IKR
They didn’t even get anything for their 30th
Kale Penquan :(
I shouldn't need to say something but
Poker Night 2 would be quite a way to go though. Luckily they're back kinda :)
The Sam and Max franchise is essentially an optical illusion of a story: when standing at one point it seems massive and complex, but when you try to find the edges they're right in front of your face.
I found out about these two about seven months ago and I feel like they filled a hole in my heart I didn’t even know existed. Even if there hasn’t been a whole lot of traction with the franchise as of late, I feel like these two are gonna stick with me for the rest of my very days. Makes me wish I found them so much sooner, they’re such an underrated duo and I’m a little upset I wasn’t able to tag along during their glory days. This video made me smile, so thank you. :)
Applekinz Yeah I get you, I got into them just as their last game was wrapping up. On the other hand, I'm glad I didn't have to wait for anything to be released and I could jump into any piece of Sam and Max history I wanted! Thanks so much for watching!!
I feel the same way. Last week was when I got into the series. I did see them throughout the years but I never really gave them much thought or even bothered with em. Since the epidemic, I got bored and having not much else to do, I decided to give Sam and Max a try. It...surprised me. Before I even knew it, I was hooked. I went back and forth watch the cartoon series (which I think I saw as a kid but I don't remember that well) and the TellTale games. The humor is amazing. It just feels...right. There's slapstick, character and jokes that is still hilarious even if it was worn out (I am not over Sam's Banang thing; it would pop up in my brain and I'd giggle up a storm). Love these guys! Sam especially!
I feel the same. Wish I could see some more of them.
You’re gonna piss yourself when you hear the news
(If you magically haven’t yet)
well now its been getting a ton of traction this past year, a lot of people have been reposting clips, drawing fanart, etc. more than ever, and im glad its finding a bigger audience
It really warms my heart to see so many kids in the comments just discovering this franchise within the past year-ish. Good timing, too!
I know! I'm glad Sam and Max are getting more attention
Yeah I found out about it a few months ago and I really don't regret getting into the fandom
It makes me so happy and it makes my life feel complete not even lying
Before I found out about it I felt something missing and once I did I just feel extremely happy and comforted by the series
Looking forward to the next game if there will be one
I guess I’m one of those people, I think I heard about them first because of poker night 2 when I was young and didn’t really get interested until last year when the remakes got ported to the switch
I've never been able to place my finger on why I knew this franchise was so special, but I think you hit the nail totally on the head here! Great video!
Thanks very much! I'm glad I could shed some light on Sam and Max :^)
I've never even thought about how strongly sam and max break what's considered one of the most central and consistent rules of storytelling and it makes perfect sense it's one of their greatest strengths. On top of being a favorite series of mine, it's also a good example that sometimes you need to go against conventional wisdom to make something even better.
Thank you for opening my eyes through the "show and tell" writing method. It may not be much but its so much worth it than just saying "show don't tell"
You're welcome! there might be an actual term for this type of writing, but I haven't heard it
Truly Sam & Max is a genius work. Not only for that, but the humor and thinking is so out of the box that it's always fun to bring people into a new game to watch their jaws drop when the mundane isn't the answer to your problem in the games. (It's even funnier when it's so mundane that the newbie is now trying to think up the most outlandish thing and then they're so flabbergasted they're almost offended).
very true! I don't know how they even think of some of the scenarios
Sam & Max is something special. Got a kick out of your video!
It really is! Thanks for watching
Oh, now I understand what is it that I loved so much about these two. I still haven't finished exploring the franchise (discovered them last tuesday) but I do know I like these two quite a bit. For me, it completely clicked when you said "it feels like there's so much before it that you missed out": yes, it makes it seem like they've had such fun, interesting and fulfilling adventures! So _of course_ I want to know more about them. Loved your analysis, so accurate!
Thanks! I'm jealous of how much more Sam and Max is out there for you
i’d really like to make a comic like sam & max one day but i’m not creative enough for that
Never give up! I'm sure Steve Purcell didn't feel creative enough sometimes too.

You beautifully expressed the pure love I have for these characters. It's amazing how Sam & Max continues to live on, now with a remastered game and a new one coming soon. They have a charm to them that I feel will never die out :)
Thank you! Sam and Max will never die
I've been trying to finger out why Sam & Max are so compelling. Thank you!
You're welcome!

I always knew sam and max but forgot it for awhile and finally came back on it. I might get a 1960 desoto one day, it will need white doors and a badge :)
If I could drive, I'd want one too lol
Been fond of these two for about 2-3 years now. I'm so glad that it's still kicking. Great visuals AND great dialogue
They've got it all!
I like how its a franchise that is so strongly associated with games.
I first heard about it in hushed reverential tones in swedish
PC Gamer magazine as a kid.
Then I played the Telltale games. And it was pretty darn funny.
I used to be a huge Sam & Max fan when I was younger, a few years after Save the World was released. Now, almost a decade and a half later I'm back to my roots, loving the series and being a fanatic about it.
Bro, just realized talking like that is probably a reference to 20's noir pention for indepth descriptions of the mundain, but with a Sam and Max twist.
I really like how you're able to have a nice calm voice for the overview of this topic.
I love Sam and Max knowing how much potential they have from what they could achieve.
Great video man, really enjoyed it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good stuff, well-thought-out and eloquent!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
I saw the flipbook too. I had cropped all of the photos in a haphazard screenshot crop. It came out kind of choppy but i was satisefied with it. I didnt realize someone else would put in the effort to make the animation! Mostly thought it would just stay splayed out.
you did an incredible job explaining what makes Sam & Max such an amazing series! because of its exposition, it leads to the sense of endless possibilities. that's one of the many reasons why I love this series, there's so many opportunities for new stories to tell. it's why it's had such a long staying power. fans are able to imagine all sorts of crazy adventures with Sam & Max, so they stay interested for a long time!
(I'm rambling and probably make very little sense, but what I'm trying to say is thank you for this excellent video!)
That makes lots of sense to me! Glad you enjoyed it
Even as a newcomer to this series (having discovered it only a year or two ago), I instantly fell in love with the series (and the duo themselves), as I felt exactly how you described in this video. It felt like there was more to the series than just the games, comics, and tv shows, and yet there wasn't. The world building was always so weirdly on point, that even though it was done in a very unique way, I still felt the same world building I would from something like Xenoblade Chronices, a game so heavily focused on plot and things that it's easily over 100 hours.
Each moment of world building or exposition felt both genuine and not genuine, somehow. Like they were joking about it, but in universe it definitely could have been something that they did. Plus, they said it in such a way that, like you said, is so vivid and detailed that it makes it so you don't need what other series have for exposition. It's a one and done kind of thing with them.
Not to mention, the fact that the duo always say stuff about their previous adventures with the same tone as they do everything else is always so funny to me. It's as if they've been on so many wacky and zany adventures that a hypnosis cult or whatever happens in Season 3 in the games (not up to there yet, so yeah) is always so normal for them.
It's especially shown like that in the tv show, where they never seem weirded out by a job (unless it has something to do with Lorne, because he sucks.) and they always just kinda go along with it like it's an every day thing.
That's just one of my favorite things about the series (the others being the comedy and the namesake duo respectively, and how cohesively it all blends together), and I think you definitely put exactly how I feel about it into words in this video.
Great video! :)
That's twice now you've videos on some of my favorite games. Enjoyed the video, keep up the good work man!
Wow, what are the odds! I'm glad you're enjoying them, thank you very much :^ )
Welp. It's been 3 years since I watched this video. Save the World & Beyond Time & Space got shiny, new re-releases. The TV series is streaming on Tubi.
And the original S&M comics are STILL out-of-print.
[angry fan noises]
It’s nice to see Sam & Max getting more of a cult following recently, I hope their new game does well when it releases!
I just recently got into Sam & Max (about a month ago, I'd say) and it truly is a great series. There's something about it that just makes me so happy that no other series or franchise has really ever done before. I'm glad there's still a community surrounding Sam & Max, since it looks like the series hasn't gotten much traction as of late. Otherwise, this is a really short and sweet video! Keep up the good work :^J
I had such a similar view of them as a kid! Great video, always wanted to make one on them myself.
Thanks very much! You should still make one, there’s not enough Sam and Max content out there
When it comes to those two "don't ask, don't tell" might be a more appropriate phrase than "show don't tell"
Having finished this old video on a new Sam & Max binge makes me wistfully nostalgic for earlier times... Like that time I watched this video! That was great!
you crack me up, little buddy
I've fallen in love with shows like Sam and Max, Wallace & Gromit, even Dilbert over the years. Can't say I've met anyone with the same tastes as mine. It's sad, but makes it even more personal in a way I can appreciate.
This is an amazing well thought video!
oo lala thank you : )
amazing video! i feel like you truly understood what this franchise means
Thank you!
Liked the video!
Also yeah I noticed with the whole tell dotn show thing as I was watching poker night and sam says
"hey reggie these new chairs are great it's like my keister is being held aloft by timy velvet angels" and my little brother walking by stopped and couldn't stop chuckling and kept asking questions about sama and max and I had the burden to tell him there isn't much Sam and max to watch
love Sam & Max and I loved the video!
Thank you!
Oh the first episode I was convinced I missed a season or two
I like this series or show or whatever. I’ll have to check it out more.
Please do :)
I knew about these two for a while, mainly from Poker Night 2
But then my recommendations started blowing up with Sam & Max.
I think of rules like recipes. An amateur can make something good by following a recipe but a truly skilled cook can fly off the handle and completely ignore the recipe yet create a work of culinary art. It's like being so cool you can break the rules of cool 😎
You explained so well why i think this franchise is a hidden gem!
completely agree i was always confused why i kept feeling like i missed something in it

You're very welcome!
Great video. You've nailed it
Thanks!
This reminds me of a video by a Team Fortress 2 animator: a long time ago, one day I stumbled upon a video, a parody of your standard space operas I believe, thing is he treated the video as if it's part of a running series with seasons and episodes, the title itself claiming it's an episode of the second seasons
I looked around and found nothing of course
So I checked the comments and there were some who were "in on it"
Saying things on how it can be found on certain channels or are discontinued.
That's funny, TF2 itself has quite Sam and Max style of lore
Sam and Max are so cute
Cars On The Road would be so much better if Steve Purcell stuck a little bit to the Sam and Max formula. Sir, it’s not THAT bad. In fact, I would say your dog and rabbit cartoon is one of the best things out there!

This is the longest 6 minute video I’ve ever watched.
"Surfin' the high way" and "The age of S and M" along with some Tick book are the physical books I'm happiest I own. I've read and enjoyed a lot of comics in ebook, but some special about a physical copy of those 4 books.
It's good to come across someone else who owns a copy.
This is a great vid that seems like some big youtuber made it and more people need to see it
Thanks a lot to the support :)
Another good example of this kind of concept (and personally my favorite) is Troy McClure from The Simpsons. Every time he introduces himself to the audience he remarks how you might recognize him from a couple of movies with bizarre yet hilarious titles, yet we never get to see what these movies are.
Holy! This video was so well made and the background music was stellar.
I checked out your bandcamp and your music is great too!
Kinda curious if you recorded the music or used a DAW
Sam & Max will forever have a special place in my heart. You can tell when something was created with love, and anything made involving these 2 feels like it.
Hell, they even inspired me making my own comic
Definitely! There's a lot of passion behind these cartoon animals
I am glad i got into this great series and even brought the original releases of the telltale sam and max games including the hybrid disc releases
