I like when Ladybird's first boyfriend crumbles into her arms. Such an unconventional end of a relationship for a teen movie.
It also endeared ladybird quite a lot because it's one of the first times you see her realise that something wasn't about her. She goes from being angry that he cheated to being sympathetic for this repressed boy, and we don't really see that before then.

Especially that part where they were arguing over lady bird dragging her feet but then they cut it short when her mom finds a really pretty dress 😂

I think the reason that alot of people dislike this film is that they simply can not relate to it whether that is becase of race, age or class. If you dont have similar experince to the protagnist the story to you is bland and unoriginal. Lady bird requries you to bring your own past experince into the movie to recive any meaning from it. That is specifically what makes this movie amazing to some and not so good to others. I think the comments under this video is just a reflection of that phenomenon.
Well said! I feel that for the sake of seeking more diversity in TV shows, movies, games, books, etc, people overlook media starred by whites so quickly as "bland". I understand that it's a powerful thing to have diverse media (I cried watching just the intro of "Coco" because of how beautiful I thought it was that Mexican culture got its spotlight), but I find it so disappointing when amazing things like "Life is Strange" and "Lady Bird" are automatically seen as "just stories about being a white girl".
The same can be said for minority starred media. They're always too "ethnic" for some people. It's crazy!!

Plus some people just want it sexy, funny, rough and gory. No matter the race/culture (though they really try to deliver) Marvel/Disney, the Wizarding world and similar franchises (like Fast and Furious & DC... Of course) will always be successful.
I agree with you 100 percent I didn't receive the appreciation for this movie until after I watched it. I don't remember the name of the character but there was this guy who was lady bird's boyfriend but then turned out he was gay and he apologized for not telling her before they broke up and it hit me close since I never really saw such a representation that's also really good and something that happens.
People I knew hated him since why go for a guy if you were already with a girl? I tried to explain that sometimes you have to try it out to realize what you prefer like food

I love the character timothee chalemet plays. That’s what made it real. That one guy in high school that you thought the world of but in the end he was just using you and is basically full of shit
I was excited to watch this because I'm a big fan of Timothee Chalemet, I love the way his character was. Every time he talked I was like "What?" It was fun to see him in that type of character. I was expecting him to be this amazing boy that shows her different experiences but he just just was a toxic ass lol

the part where ladybird says "I know you love me but do you like me?" hit me.
I loved how they humanized each character and gave them enough depth so that they didn't feel made up but actually real. Even the supposed antagonists didn't have this cartoonish feel to them and werent completely unlikeable. Everything that happened in the movie felt right, not perfect.

I have opened the door to do it many times during arguments with my mom, but I never had the guts to get out. In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't.
They really perfected the feeling of being trapped in the car with your mom and you can’t escape from the conversation

I love this movie with all my heart but one thing that I really like about the movie is how the side characters aren’t just props but have character , just because we look into the story of ladybird doesn’t mean that the side characters don’t have their stories to tell

I'm not white neither American. I was raised by a poor family in a middle eastern country but I still I love this story, I don't think it's bland at all. I really liked the conflict of mother-daughter. Not everyone's life is eventful, it shows simplicity with complex emotions.
I definitely think that this movie is for a very specific type of person. I don't think that it's going to be everyone's cup of tea. But I personally found a really huge connection with the movie to my life. Not everyone is gonna get it but I thought it was amazing cuz it felt like it was made for me. Ha. But... for everyone else I think it has some humorous points and some relatable story lines.

I find it odd that you decided to call the movie "cliché-free" when it used one of the oldest clichés in the book (character trying to fit in with the cool kids and losing their best friend because of it).

The relationship between lady bird's mom and her is honestly the highlight of this movie.
I thought that the dialogue was very well written and was a lot fun. But the subplot of “becoming friends with the popular kids and then going back to the average friends because the character is a good person” is very overused and just felt cheesy. Other than that it was a fun flick with good performances and an interesting character

I watched hunt for the wilderpeople afterwards, which was a genuine emotionally moving totally entertaining fun film, which i look forward to rewatch, So I really think people are just retarded idiots, there nothing original in ladybird, I literally found watching paint dry more interesting. It makes 80s teenage films like epic masterpieces.

When I was watching the film, it had that fresh feeling when you're watching a John Hughes teen film from the 80s. That's when I know Ms.Gerwig has done wonderful job capturing that same feeling again for modern audiences !

You know when you're an adult if you relate to adults more than the kids/teens in the movies. My heart ached for Lady Bird's mom. She was trying so hard to do everything for her daughter, yet Lady Bird was so ungrateful. Mom was clearly overwhelmed with double shifts and chores in the house, and then she comes home to find all towels wet, or her daughter getting suspended, or her daughter being secretive about college application. The movies was so real and so heart breaking. It also cemented my decision to never become a mother. I would love my children, but there's no guarantee that I would like them, too.
There is a scene where she tells Ladybird that her mom was an abusive alcoholic , and it just breaks my heart.
I’m sorry but her mom was kind of a bad person. Her financial troubles aren’t the responsibility of her teenage daughter. And not talking to your daughter on her birthday?

Jasmine Craven I saw the film first when I was 15, a real selfish age. I could not understand how my mum (when we watched it) could sympathize with her mum. The mother didn't talk to her when Ladybird went to nyc f.e. That's the worst thing ever right? Then I watched it a few months ago (now I'm almost 17). I could see why her mum reacted the way that she did, I understood why Ladybird reacted the way she did. The mum has so many struggles: Her mother was an alcoholic, her husband is depressed, money trouble and raising a teen daughter. All that is so stressful. The things she said or did were influenced by that stress. The same goes for ladybird ofc. How you react isn't always a rational decision, but it's an outcome of emotion. I would reallY watch it again and try understanding the mum's side!!! It will open your eyes
I recently watched Lady Bird and immediately fell in love with it. There were a lot of good films in 2017, many of which I haven’t seen yet so I don’t think it’d be fair for me to name it the best of the year. Great analysis 👍🏻 I’d love to see one on Call Me By Your Name!
This is easily my favorite film of the year, everything was just great and the film flows so beautifully. I could have easily watched 9 hours more without being bored.

I didn't love the movie as much as many seemed to. I was able to relate in a lot of ways but I wasn't empathetic enough towards the characters to feel the occult obsession a lot of Lady Bird fans have for this movie. I think Lady Bird hits more with viewers who relate with her personality and life story more. Since I didn't I couldn't like the movie as much.
I think Saoirse Ronan is 23 now but she has been playing 17 year olds since she was 15! I think that Brooklyn is the only movie in which she has played an adult in her 20s.
BTW, the movie is the story of my niece and my sister. I just couldn't believe how closely it resembles their lives! They still haven't seen it but I am making sure that they do.
I liked this movie but REALLY didn't understand why everyone is losing their minds over it. This added perspective but I still feel like it was a basic indie young people growing up film.

Cow Commando I agree. These days, people don't really appreciate simple and wholesome, well-made movies. It's always more-more-more for everybody, that's why we have cess-pools of shows like Game of Thrones that show so much disgusting stuff. Don't get me wrong, I love GoT, but all of the things in it are really gross. Something like that never would have been allowed in the past. That's why kids are watching things like that and their minds are so degraded. This was a great movie.
Alot of people write about how as an adult and parent, they relate to Lady Bird's mom, and feel bad for her and describe Lady Bird as ungrateful. I (an adult) watched this movie with my mother. For a flip view:
My mom's main concern at the end of the movie, was that Lady Bird should stay in New York and fight for her dreams. She was angry that Lady Bird's mom didn't properly see her off at the airport, and at how Marion talks her daughter down alot. She fully acknowledged Lady Bird's faults and had thoughts about her relationship with her father as well, but she didn't like Marions attempts to keep Lady Bird in the local college, and how she (failed to) communicate with Lady Bird.
I actually think I might've felt more sorry for Marion than my mom did.
i feel like it incorporates so many perspectives and emotions that come along with each perspective. We get perspectives from Ladybird, the closeted gay boy, Ladybird's best friend, her father, her mother, just anyone, whether it be extremely focused in the movie or just given a glimpse.

I cried so much during this movie because it hit a specific thing in my life, the relationship with my mom. It’s a beautiful movie I wish Greta had won an oscar for this

Girl leaves her best friend behind to join the "cool kids" only to come to the realisation that her "cool" friends are assholes and then proceeds to return to her old best friend.
Lady Bird wasn't really my cup of tea but was pretty funny and had good performances from Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf. It felt like a ton of vignettes being shown one after the other. Didn't really have a lot of time to breathe while watching it.

That's kind of what made it so great though. It wasn't life, especially with the editing where the start of every awkward moment would cut to the next scene. However, it was in those moments, or vignettes as you say, that the acting and direction really shone through. It was almost like a realistic supercut.

It's a warm, funny coming-of-age film. It's a good movie but is it the best of the year?
Yup. I loved it but I wish it was 30 minutes longer so that every major event could have more space to leave a bigger impact on the viewer.
I think much of the praise of Lady Bird’s depiction of the complicated mother-daughter relationship glosses over the fact that it “hits home” because there’s an immaturity about the mother that is sadly reflective of many real, imperfect parents who justify their own bad behaviors with “I’m doing this because I care about you.” I think cinema in general rarely actually addresses this subtle manipulative behavior & instead represents it (or I would even go as far to say disguises it) as “love”. I think Lady Bird at least bothers to show it which I think is why this movie is “unique”, but it doesn’t go as far as calling out this for what it is, a dysfunctional relationship that is really not ok.
Also, I believe many people pointed the fact that it is actually riddled with cliches, including the letters at the end meant to imply reconciliation without true consequences for the mistake(s) Marion has made (the most immediate example is ofc the pettiness of not saying goodbye to her daughter).
Yes! I just watched this movie and the end was very unsatifying, since we didn't get the mom reflecting on her actions or apologizing, but we got the daughter apologizing, reflecting and even thanking her mom.. It was too one sided.

I never really liked the whole Coming of Age-genre. Then I watched Lady Bird and couldn't explain why I enjoyed it so much. I think you guys did a great job in phrasing what I was unable to! Love your vids! Keep it up!

I think what really shows the complexity of their relationship is how the mom helps Lady Bird shop for a dress for Thanksgiving dinner that she doesn't want her to attend.

this movie is perfect in every way. The story is so beautiful and SO different from any other coming of age film. I relate to Lady Bird on sooo many levels. Always trying to figure myself out, desperately searching for creative passions, and always daydreaming about "what ifs." Greta Gerwig is a masterpiece
The biggest reason I love this movie is that it’s filled with so much heart. From the stunning performances to the care with which Greta put this movie together, it is all just so genuine and honest and warm. It was instantly one of my all time favorites

First I really Enjoyed this film, I do think its crazy its getting higher than other films like Blade Runner, Co Co and Logan which I feel will become classic films over the ages.
But I did enjoy this film a lot, and these video's like always tell me even more about some of the lessons that went over my head and make the movie deeper on a second viewing
I loved the coach scene and think it was really good and hope more people see it, just maybe don't expect it to be a perfect film as that one reviewer put it.

I hated Blade Runner xD but I agree with the other ones.
The new Blade Runner suffers from a lot of things that the new Star Wars franchise suffers with. Glamorous regurgitating. What seems new and fresh is really ripped off. For example. K loves a girl but that love can never be fulfilled or is seen as "taboo" with his love for Joy. Deckard had this with his love for Rachel. In the beginning of Blade Runner 1 a replicant kills a Blade Runner (human or not is unknown) after a voigt kampff test. In Blade Runner 2 is starts with an impromptu voight kampff and the Blade Runner kills the replicant. However. In Blade Runner 2 the Blade Runner already knows the replicant and what he is. Blade Runner 2 has several HUGE holes. For example. Love goes to the LAPD headquarters and murders the coroner and takes the child of Deckard and Rachel's bones. The next scene there are city workers hosing down the mess and there is no talk whatsoever about Love doing that. There is no security camera footage or any investigation or anything. In Blade Runner 2 the reincarnation of CGI Rachel... just to have her head blown off. Is so stupid. It is so 21st Century "let's do this just because we can" arrogance. And really. They can't. It is not convincing at all. In Blade Runner original however there really isn't a "bad guy" driving the plot points. Tyrell is there. But he is just there. However Blade Runner 2 uses Jared Leto as this evil boogeyman (forgettable character... I can't even recall the characters name) to drive the action. Horrible. The whole "find the baby" fiasco reminds me Willow. Except Willow was actually cool. Blade Runner 2 is a huge disappointment hiding behind colorful eye candy. Both Blade Runners have a replicant sacrifics to save Deckard as "apparently" K dies at the end. A total sham.

For anyone wondering, the movie portrayed Sacramento pretty perfectly.
I found myself loving Ladybird. I related to her, and I found myself rooting for and wanting the best for her.
Also really loved her relationship with her mother. I definitely see my sisters relationship with mom in her.
I think the problem with this movie is the fact that it has SO MANY clichés that it divides the audience into people who have never experienced these stereotypes, with people who have. I haven't experienced many of these people in my life, so basically the whole cast is off limits in terms of how relatable I find them. I related to the mother daughter relationship in some ways, but the rest of the movie was just OK
I'm just so happy for Jordan Rodriguez getting the role as her brother and doing so well for himself after Dance Academy 😊💓

Loved this film and got most of this (was in high school in 2002) but some nice takes here regarding love.
Love Lady Bird and this video. 💛 Especially the point you made about how love is a form of attention - I felt like that was a huge lesson her character discovered, to pay more attention to people she loves, including her father too, as she didn't realize he was battling depression and that he knew she would get down from the car early because she was embarrassed, and how that hurt him... Ugh, beautiful stuff.

I can understand why some people didn't like it, but as someone who grew up in the suburbs, went to Catholic school for 16 years, had that exact type of relationship with my mom, and moved to the city for college, Lady Bird hit so incredibly close to home that I can't help but cry every time I watch it (and wonder if someone had secretly been following my friends & I in high school and taking notes on our every move).
I saw it in theaters when I was home for Christmas break my senior year of college-- went with my two best friends from (Catholic) high school. We walked out of the theater completely floored at how closely it matched our experiences and just how real it felt. It was honestly the most personal connection I've had with a movie to date.
I guess what is great about this film, is that Lady Bird is such an ambiguous character, which perfectly depicts the teenage years. She is at the same time authentic and dependent, for instance, she asserts herself by given herself a name . However, she felt embarrassed about her family economic situation until the point to lie about it out of fear of public judgement.

Nephi Nelson yeah, she's a cliche. However, that is not necessarily bad, as a matter of fact, she has to be a cliche so the movie is effective. Furthermore, teenagers are cliche, there is no scape from that.

Personally I don’t think the film is very good, I think it’s a story that’s been told many times before in many different ways but the acting is pretty good as well as the cinematography and it’s different enough from others that it catches your attention. I also think that is a good film for both teenage girls and boys to relate to which is now more so than any other time before very important when it comes to ratings and how many people see the film.
I for one graduated high school the same year as Lady Bird, so it was refreshing to go back in time and see 2002/2003 again!
What i really love about this movie is the realness of it. Like theres no stereotypical characters. The spoiled girl and her guy friends are spoiled yes but there werent like over the top mean girls and friends like we see in other teenage movies, they were decent human beings. And the catholic school is not portrayed as this bad oppressive religious school like in other movies. Greta Gerwig ability to tell a crystal clear story without the stereotypical characters is just amazing.
You guys should cover House M.D. someday. Great characters and situations full of analytical potential.
Lola Lola yep but it was blatant and had some amazingly strong female characters. House is an arse, to everyone. He preyed on everyone, he had a lot of isms and ists, no one was left out.

I feel like this film is only so well received because it hits all the cliche plot points of similar films(white teens coming of age) while providing good acting and writing. It's like fast food, but with healthier ingredients... I enjoyed it, but it's seriously overhyped.
The thing I like so much about this movie is that it’s very realistic and doesn’t try to make certain characters look better or worse than they actually are

I originally watched it because of timothee chalamet, but after watching it for the first time I truly enjoyed it because it shows how Christine is just trapped in this place and how she wants to go to nyc. And I feel like I relate to that, even when she pretty much misses her home!
It's a great coming of age film, but there have been MANY films before it that tell the same story in more creative and less on-the-nose ways.
Exactly what is so great about this movie about another middle class average white girl, with a good family and her problems. Like how many of these stories do we actually need?

Laurie Metcalf is the only reason I watched this movie. Great acting from her as usual and the other actors. Despite that, not really a movie I liked. I found their relationship dynamic so exhausting. But I’m sure that’s what the director was going for. Not enjoyable for me though.
