And I love how this quote works both ways. I grew up in a conservative immigrant family and now, at the age of 25, everyone around me tells me that I SHOULD get a boyfriend and get married and have children, because that’s the tradition and what all my female cousins have done.
But my dream has never involved that. I’ve always been the nerdy “academic” type that likes studying (I know! How can someone like studying? Even I don’t know what’s wrong with me lol), reading and writing, as well as singing and other artistic things.
I am content on my own (with 2 cats) living in a small apartment with a busy job and a small circle of friends. Apart from wanting to get a job that pays better, I wish for nothing more from life. I’m easily satisfied this way.
A lot of people from my family think this life path of living alone is bizarre and that I couldn’t possibly be happy without a man and a “real family”.
What can I say? My dreams are just different than yours. If you cannot understand, then at least respect it. That’s all anyone could ask for.

So what would the girls be, house wise?
I agree with Amy as Slytherin.
      Beth is absolutely a Hufflepuff
I actually see Meg as a Gryffindor
And Jo as a mix of Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. I guess considering the other three are each a house, that leaves Jo with Ravenclaw.

    • @MelanieNLee
      @MelanieNLee 4 роки тому +55

I agree that Amy is a Slytherin, though she might fit into Gryffindor, too, and Beth is definitely a Hufflepuff. Meg is a Gryffindor, though she could probably fit into Slytherin. I see Jo as a Ravenclaw (as I am), though she could fit into Gryffindor, too.
The March family as a whole fits into Gryffindor or Ravenclaw. The dad is a Ravenclaw, and Marmee is a Gryffindor, maybe a Hufflepuff. Aunt March is a Slytherin.
Friedrich Bhaer is a Ravenclaw, but I'm not sure where to place Laurie or John Brooke.
To the uninitiated, we're talking about the Hogwarts houses in the Harry Potter stories: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin.

I loved Amy, she’s a pragmatist and is ambitious. She wants it all. There’s nothing glamorous about struggling to pay your bills. She also enjoys accomplishment and her dressing up stems from self respect than showing off.

But you can’t fully appreciate your accomplishments if you never faced a reality of struggling to pay your bills. There is nothing glorious about things being given to you by someone without knowing a struggle. Also other people will take a credit for your accomplishments because without them you couldn’t do it. Yes, Jo struggled but that means she can take full credit for her success. And that’s I think is the most important

Amy's romanticism over choosing a gloriously wealthy and legendary love so she'd never have to suffer poverty again and would have pretty things gave way to pragmatism when she realized that Aunt March was right. One of the girls needed to marry rich to ensure her family was taken care of.
Meg was technically supposed to be the one to do this since she was the oldest and the most interested in high society early on but she fell in love with a poor man. Jo doesn't want to marry at all let alone for money, and Beth is far too fragile health wise to go courting. So Amy is the only hope for her family. That kind of pressure is crushing and she lost a lot of that mischievous spark she once had but she's damned determined to succeed. She's definitely my favorite.

Yeah, even since reading the book I`ve always prefered Amy over Jo and felt that Jo was kind of mean and unfair with her!!... I`m mean she would always compare her with Beth.. besides is being said that while Jo was closer to Beth, Meg was closer to Amy so each eldest sisters would defend her fave sister from the other one...besides I`m also the youngest of 4 sisters so I feel related to her in many ways 😅😁...

I think Jo's character is often romanticized; she sort of seems to have a mindset that causes her not to enjoy the standards of the time she lives in, which pushes her to pursue what she knows is right and that's unique. But as someone who's extremely similar to that, it's actually really painful and lonely and a lot of the time you don't actually know or understand what you want because it's never clearly painted in the world you live in.
    It kind of sucks.

I do love beautiful things like Amy as well, but certainly wouldn't marry for money. I love some comforts of home like Beth, but more as a place you know you are always welcome, and a place to create. And I have a desire to find love like Meg, but am content if I don't. people could say stuff like that back that without being immediately thought of as being gay. In fact, if she had thought that was how her words would be taken, she probably wouldn’t have said them.
Imo? It’s hard to tell. She had Jo end up with Bhaer because Laurie wasn’t manly enough for her (Jo was not just a tomboy, she was pro-masculinity). It could be that Alcott never found a man who measured up to her ideal of masculinity.
And if she was gay, that’s fine, too.

A couple decades ago the same questions were raised about First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt's letters to close friend Lorena Hickok.
Louisa Alcott was said to have had a close relationship with a young Polish man, I think in Paris. Though "Little Women" is set in U.S. civil wartime of the 1860's, Louisa was born in 1832. As I recall, she nursed during the Civil War, got some horrific disease and was treated with an equally dangerous drug like calomel (mercury), or arsenic. As I understand it she was not well most of her life. (I did a quick source check but was only able to verify her birth year and her age at time of Civil War.)

Like you say being kind is important and I obviously 100% agree, but that is what ultimately killed her. 🤷 That she was always putting others first and never thinking about herself so I think the moral is you have to be selfish and put yourself first sometimes, 🤷

    • @applebrush9249
      @applebrush9249 5 років тому +76

@@Silvercentipede I understand where you are coming from. That is definitely the impression that one gets from the movies for sure.
At first reading, Beth might seem just as two-dimentional as in those movies, but you don't need to dig too deeply to find more to her.
For instance, in the first chapter, she seemed to be the most caught up in the rehearsal for the play they were to put on that Christmas day. At one point Jo quoted a line from MacBeth as she saw a famous actor do, only to be told by Meg, "No, it's the toasting fork, with Mother's slipper on it instead of the bread. Beth is stagestruck!"
She confessed her burden to her sister "Yes I do. Mine is dishes and dusters and envying girls with nice pianos and being afraid of people."
She seemed to be forgetful. The most extreme example was during the chapter Experiments. She was(spoilers) described as constantly forgetting it was to be all play and no work, showing herself also to be a creature of habit. But the worst example of forgetfulness was (again, spoilers)when she forgot to feed her canary and he ended up dying. Much to her heartbreak. She loved animals as much as she loved her family and music.
Also that chapter seemed to show something interesting about her tranquility. It seemed she couldn't keep her serenity as well when she had no work to do? Or when her surroundings was unusually chaotic? I might be off here, but maybe routine helped her keep calm? The kind where her hands are busy and her mind free to daydream? For earlier the author made it clear that she seemed to live in a world of her own, only coming out to meet the few she trusted and loved. And another time saying she was neither lonely more idle because her world was peopled with imaginary friends and she was by nature a busy bee.
I could go on, having barely scratched the surface but I won't in this post. Like I said, I can relate with her and other characters like her. The quiet often strike those who are more extroverted as dull, but remember that still water runs deep.

The March sisters are not 2D characters, like women in other forms of fiction and popular culture, but most women, who are also deeply complicated beings with varying different characteristics, talents, dreams and ambitions, don't fall neatly into any rigidly defined stereotype or structured personality. That's the fundamental problem with the premise of this UA-cam video. Still doesn't stop the video from being fun, just means that it doesn't even touch the surface of what real-life women are really like.

Sansa Stark was definitely the Amy of her universe; though her original dream of marrying well and having a great love in her life was never meant to come true, she did (or will, in the ASOIAF books) change with time and achieved success in other areas.

    • @lasttoparty7570
      @lasttoparty7570 5 років тому +86

I feel Sansa always fitted into the Amy profile. She didn't really want to have a family life for its own sake like Meg - Sansa wanted to shine, to be admired as the perfect lady and wife with the perfect, loving husband and the fairytale life. She wanted to be successful while conforming to how her society measured success. She was the traditional girly girl, she loved nice clothes and other luxuries, she was a little vain, admired beauty a great deal, she was ambitious and went to some lenghts to get what she wanted (lying to King Robert about the Arya vs Joffrey fight). By the end of her time in the Eyrie, Sansa shifted somewhat from wanting love and a Prince Charming to wanting power and control over her own fate (which she succeeded at getting in the show).

Not every lesbian acts as Jo does, I get it, but not conforming to the traditional traits of the gender at that time is a sign for me. Also, the way she avoids marriage speaks to me in ways that remind me of myself (a lesbian). She doesn't love Laurie romantically, and doesn't want to. You can totally see her as you want to.

Little women is my favorite book of all time and I truly relate to Amy in the book and I never understood why she was classified as the brat. Sure she burned Jo’s book but she was just a child and she grew up. When the PBS series for little women came out i was so excited because I liked that they finally included a bit more of Laurie and Amy falling in love. My friends never understood my love of Amy and they stood by Jo being the best March sister (we’re high school students) but I still loved Amy and dreamed of my own Laurie. Now that the new movie came out my friends understand why I love Amy (although I still think that they could have put in more of Amy’s own kindness and the effort she put in to better herself). My best friend, Lily, and I have become accustomed to calling one another Meg and Amy since she’s like the elder and I like the younger sister. We used to dream of finding love, a John for her and a Laurie for me. Shortly before quarantine she found her John Brooke. I still hope to find my Laurie. Anyway, I didn’t start loving Amy when Greta’s movie came out, I loved her from the first time I read Little Women when I was 14. I admired her passion for art, ambition, and realism whilst still being a romantic. Laurie and Amy are my OTP (outside of Lily and her real life John Brooke) and I will always love both of their characters. I hope to become more like Amy by trying to better myself as she did and pursue my dreams and art (i play piano, act, dance, and sing but can’t draw to save my life). Though some of my friends see me as a kind Beth or loving Meg, I’ll always be an Amy.

I loved the new movie because it made Amy into a real character. She's always been the one I identify the most with, so it makes me sad when people hate her. I understand what it's like to be the bratty one in the family, and want everything your sister has. The scene where she burns the pages because Jo left her could literally be a scene from my life (albeit one I'm not proud of), and I've felt the hurt of having your sister care about a thing more than you. Amy ends up getting everything her sister had, but my interpretation of that was a bit different from yours. With a lot of the subtext, I felt like Laurie didn't really love her that much, but she wanted so badly to be happy and have him that she ignored it. Amy gets what she wants, but she understands that by the time she does, it's often hollow or meaningless. But I don't know, that could just be me projecting onto her. Anyway, great analysis for a great movie. Keep up the good work!

I always related most to Amy when I read the book too, and I also felt sad when she was hated (kinda felt like they were hating me since felt so similar to her lol). I think shaming strong femininity is just another form of sexism, so I love this new take on the book because it shows there's no one way to be a woman and they all have valid life decisions. You can be traditionally masculine or traditionally feminine, sweet and quiet or independent and rowdy. True feminism is about freedom regardless if whether your male or female.

Samantha Young I agree with most of what you said except for Laurie not loving. He definitely did, and even more than that, he needed her. He was growing lazy and losing sight of his future and Amy’s realism brought him back to that. And Laurie was there when Amy needed him most, when Beth died and she wasn’t there, Laurie was her connection to home.

It shocks me that Amy was looked down. So many I know are like her. To me, I think they looked down on Amy because she knew how to play at society's rules. It's either to rebel or follow them in people's eyes when she followed the 3rd and hidden path. This is just me but knowing that a lot of women have had low self-esteem since the beginning of society makes me think that many disliked her from also seeing many similarities with her. Obviously, I am looking too much into it.
In the end, I am a lot like Beth who can't help on admiring those who are like Amy + Beth. I am a feminist so it makes me sad to know that so many men and women think that feminism thinks we are supposed to have jobs, get rid of marriage when there is nothing wrong with wanting to carry strong feminity.

I think I'm mostly Beth. I'm compassionate, I love music and dolls, and I want to have the people I love around me. I'm also shy and introverted. I have creative ambition and dreams like Jo and Amy but my introversion makes it a struggle for me to persue it. In the 90s version when Clare Danes said "I like to be at home. But I hate to be left behind" I felt that.
When I was younger I was more like Amy. I was self involved and spiteful. Burning Jo's manuscript was the kind of shady shit I would have done, or at least thought about doing. My strong sense of beauty leads me to love material things and high society and I'm kind of a perfectionist. I can also be pragmatic when something important is on the line.
I was also like Jo when I was younger. I had creative ambitions and nothing but disgust for most traditional values and conventions. I had a temper and really knew how to hold a grudge.
There's a little bit of Meg in there. I make the most of my circumstances but sometimes I get swept away by my ache for more excitement and luxury. I'm not really a 'wife and Mother' type but I feel very warm towards the children in my life.

I know what you mean. While I love books and writing like Jo and have a beauty loving nature like Amy, I most relate to Beth.
The only things that get me mad is when someone or something is being treated unfairly or when my environment is too chaotic and noisy/angry. I love sharing what I write and draw, but am perfectly content if they stay in my head, prefer it to be honest because when I try to capture what's in there, I only get a pale imitation of the beauty of my daydreams and that is discouraging.
Plus I don't think people don't get how hard it is to be so timid and scared. I am scared of everything, it seems. Fear like that controls everything you do, and it takes so much more effort to do what others take for granted. I deal with it by my reading and daydreams, my spiritual life and focusing on making others feel loved and comfortable. That brings me peace.

Indeed, Jo comes across as judgemental to those women in her life who want to have a traditional family role or be traditionally feminine, both Amy and Meg and yes even Beth.
On the other hand Jo's sisters are much more accepting of her ways than she is of them. Even Meg who initially tries to get Jo to behave more ladylike, gets Jo far more than Jo ever understand her sisters and that understanding comes to Meg early on in Little Women (and before Good wives). Jo, on the other hand is so busy railing against her position in life she can't put herself in other people's shoes. There is nothing wrong with Jo's non conformity it's her self absorption that is the issue.
Interestingly this attitude is the case in modern society for the most part among feminists as exampled above in the comments. It is far more acceptable to be a career driven woman than one who is content with a traditional female role.
Even further exampled and exemplified in the video by the way they treat Beth's character as 'too submissive'. She wasn't submissive, she was selfless. There's a difference. She had agency, she used that agency to care for others.

@@Miluielle Oh, definitely. The unjust thing is that all those weak "femenine" qualities are celebrated as good in "woke" men, but are still shamed as weak and anti-feminist in women. It is a very recent kind of misogyny but one that is unfortunately spreading fast.

_ Jo is a Slytherin with Gryffindor undertone because she is ambitious and resourceful. Her dream of becoming a writer is very important to her and will do anything necessary to make it a reality. She is a nonconformist idealist who dares to go her own way.
_ Amy is a Ravenclaw with Slytherin tendency. In fact, she can be sorted into either house and still excel. Why ? Amy is ambitious just like Jo is in pursuing her dream but she also has fervent love for knowledge and fascination with history as well as tradition. Unlike Jo, Amy is a realist and proceeds life with logics.
_ Meg is a total Hufflepuff because she does not seek vanity and values hardwork and loyalty. She would sometimes succumb to vanity but eventually choose to do the right thing in the end.
_ Beth is a Ravenclaw with Hufflepuff personality for she values her pursuit of knowledge (evidently via her love of improving her skill in piano) above all else but she is also kind and loving. Because she possesses Hufflepuff quality, she is loyal and family-oriented. Nevertheless, the sorting hat will have a hard time deciding whether Beth should be sorted into Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw UNLESS she asks to be in Hufflepuff specifically.
P/S: Please stop treating Slytherins like they are the villains. The truth is that Slytherins are complex in real life. They can become your best of friends or worst enemies depending on how you treat them. They can be the greatest heroes or the most twisted antagonists.

I have Beth’s care for others and her desire to not bother anyone on her behalf. Finally, I have meg’s envy of those with more than her (especially when mentioned how she remembers a time when they weren’t’t poor... what a mood lol). Of course I love Jo, and when she breaks down to her mother about her profound frustration with what is expected of women, and her loneliness, oh boy I cried, it hit hard.
But my favourite character is Amy. It becomes clear to her in that scene with Meryl Streep, that the best way she can help herself and her family is marrying rich. Yes she craves a luxurious life for herself, but she also cares deeply about her family and her motivations are much less selfish and shallow than they appear. She's a super complex character who I admire and relate to, and also I love Florence Pugh's portrayal of her with all my heart.

Have seen all the "Little Women" movies ever made except this latest one! Will watch it at some point, but the 1994 one will always remain my very favorite one, beautifully filmed, acted with gorgeous music by Thomas Newman! I'm a modern day Marmee who lives in Liberal MA and has all daughters and lost my middle one to coma and brain injury! My oldest is a mom and artist like myself professionally and my youngest is also an artist and teacher and is also a published author as well. "Art reflects life", life reflects art! Orchard House in Concord is open to the public and you can still see the bedroom and desk where Louisa May Alcott wrote the book and still see the piano in the front parlor and still see "Amy's" drawings on the walls of her bedroom! They were all "feminists" back then during the Transcendental era in the 1800s. "Marmee" in real life was the country's first social worker who helped women get work, "Meg" in real life was a teacher as was "Jo" along with being a writer and "Amy" an artist who died after childbirth! Louisa help raise her daughter until she was eight when she went back to Europe to live with her father! Louisa was also a nurse during the Civil War in Washington DC, got very sick and was never the same healthwise again. She was also the first woman to vote in a public school election back then! Louisa and her father a teacher/philosopher who was the first teacher to admit a black child into his school "Fruitlands' back then, died just days apart from each other! They're all buried except for "Amy" on Writer's Hill at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery with writers Nathaniel Hawthorne of "The Scarlet Letter" fame, Henry Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson!, May they all rest in peace~

Oh shit, the way you described Amy made me realised why I love her character so much. I am her. The only thing that differs between us is that even though I am ambitious as her in terms of recognition for her work, I also want to make my living for myself and not rely on marriage. But then I think about how were things back then, and as a very rational and realistic person just as her, maybe if I had lived back then I would take her same decisions in terms of marriage, she wanted passion but also having in mind the comfort. Holy shit I am her completely. While watching the movie, I thought I could relate more to Jo because of how ambitious and angry she was of her disadvantages as a woman in society. But then I realised I am not a carefree rebel tomboy. I was quirky and childish and a dreamer when I was younger just like Amy, and I grew up to be very feminine and put together and ambitious for my future in terms of wanting a good life, family and career. But maybe If I had live in other times, my rational self would have left my career ambitious to the side just like Amy did, but because we don't live back then any more I can be totally Amy without stopping aspiring for great things and to be self-sufficient. The thing of "wanting to marry rich" is seen as something completely selfish and coldhearted nowadays, but back then that was considered simply being smart, and I know for sure that if her character and the story had been developed in modern times, she would keep her aspirations for life just as high while also striving for her personal economic success and independence while continuing to follow her passion. I know this for sure because, in the scene where she is telling Laurie that she gives up trying to make a living as a great well-known artist because she is aware of the low possibilities of succeeding that she has for being a woman, you can clearly see by the expressions in her face while saying it that she feels sad, angry and frustrated about it. I know that in other circumstances she definitely wouldn't have given up because when she was young, and she wasn't fully conscious of her disadvantage as woman, she was aiming high for her career success as a painter just as Jo did as a writer. Something else that she has in common with Jo and the reason why they use to crash so much when they were younger is that they both sometimes are carried away by their emotions and react, and that is something I also identify with, It's something positive in a certain way because it allows me to be more spontaneous sometimes, but at the same time it can go the wrong way when I am angry, and that's something I'm still working on so I can fully become the grown version of Amy all grounded, put together and focused. Just as the video points out she is smart, and she has her own strategy to successfully get what she wants, but she is also is open to new opportunities to be happy and still get the life that she sees herself living, she is moved by aesthetics and beauty, she was a spoiled kid when she was younger, but she grew up to be a goal-oriented rational girl with standards, she is cultured, she understands how the world works and adapt and tries to make the most of it, she aspires happiness, and she knows what she needs to get it, knowing what I want is something I definitely relate to, and maybe a reason why in the movie "marriage story" I struggled so much in trying not to blame the woman who got married without having clear what she really wanted for the whole nightmare they went through, just because I simply couldn't relate for her (don't worry later in that movie I put myself in her shoes and tried to understand her). I love her identify and love her character so so much. Also, I shipped her a Laurie as a couple right away when I saw that besides having chemistry as adults, she was caring and tried to help him grow as a person. And that's something I'm always trying to do with the people around me who I love (I am a Virgo lol) I'm always trying to help them improve and become a better version of themselves, And that's exactly the personality trait that the disoriented and lovely grown-up Laurie needed in his wife. Even though Jo's character is the star of the movie because of how controversial and groundbreaking her personality and ideas were at the time the story was set at, Amy is such a good character as well, and I personally consider it a more relatable one. I am glad the director and writer of this movie tried their best to make her justice and point out her good attributes and relatable perspective.

If you read Louisa's letter exchange with her publisher she was the one who came up with all the marriages. Friedrichs character in little women is based on philosopher Henry Thoreau Louisa was in love with him. Laurie is based on Ladislas Wisniewski a young man who was first flirting with Louisa and then betrayed him. In all of Louisa's novels these two male archetypes are constantly present. The Friedrich archetype is the humble hard working man (Fritz in lw, Mac in Rose in Bloom, David in Work) He has silent passion for the protagonist and the Louisa type of protagonist loves him and wants that equal relationship. Laurie archetype is charming but idle. He either puts his act together and falls for a female character (like Amy) who is stern with them or they fail and fet sucked into consuming toxic self-harming behavior. Little Women is all about Louisa's love life. That is why she had conflicted relationship towards it. Henry was 16 years older (same age difference than between Louisa and the professor) Ladislas was 10 years younger. Louisa and Henry, They did have an affair and almost a telepathic way of communication which is also present in the novels. Henry passed away 5years before LW was published. That is also why Louisa listed out to be nurse in the war. He had lost her sister Lizzie at the same time.

Same here (: A good friend told me that we can have more "personalities" because we're never the same because we behave different in different situations. I'm proudly like Jo, Beth and Meg, too (:

I read Little Women when I was eight and immediately found myself in Jo. She was everything I aspired to be. She even made me believe I could become an author, which I am now. She gave me the courage to pursue my dreams and showed me that it's okay to go against the grain, even if you have to hustle really hard and sacrifice some things. Of course, there are downsides to being too independent and too focused on your personal goals, but at least she stays true to herself and never compromises on her values just to become a cog in the machine designed to oppress women. That is why Jo March remains my heroine and spirit animal.

Before watching this video I was 100% sure I was like Beth. I definetly think she is the most similar to me but it’s the one I show to people. The characteristics you mentioned for Jo felt like you were describing me. The main difference is that she has such a strong character and temper, I’m not like that at all. I’m used to put other people’s feeling above me. I related to Amy about some things but I noticed that all of them were artistic or feminine, I find beauty in everything and everyone. And oh Meg. I would absolutely love to be a mother and get married, it has always been one of my biggest dreams (also fears), this past time I have doubted my sexuality and aspirations. I don’t really know how I am anymore and this message was sooo long. Thank you so much for the video 💕

I am Alcott and Greta’s Jo so fully it hurts. I have been a movie junkie my whole life along with my parents, and had a wall in our tiny house filled with movies. People would stop and gasp whenever they saw it as they would walk in. In all my life I never completely connected with any character on screen. As a kid growing up I rewrote the story of movies and their characters in my head to fit me into them, some of my “favorite” movies are my favorite because when I watch them a completely different story runs along with it in my head. When I saw Greta’s film in theaters, it rang my soul when Jo slumps into the couch and says I never got over not being born a man (or whatever the line is), and every few scenes after that the volume on that feeling would turn up. Up and up until the attic scene with Marmy and my heart busted like a light bulb with too much electricity rushing through it. I think I cried, I can’t even remember because I was so engaged with the film. I have never felt so fully expressed by a film, it was a feeling I never knew existed. This movie will forever be a joy in my life that I can run back to. Thanks Gerwig, thanks Alcott.

Meg for sure. I’m interested to watch this new Little Women movie. I love the book, loved the movie with Winona Ryder (I saw it when I was quite little and I think it was the first movie that made me cry my eyes out, when Beth died)

I see a bit of myself in all the sisters, and I think that is the point. Not to see ourselves in one of them, but to recognize certain traits in ourselves in all of them. Love Little Women!!
