As an engineer that uses duct tape enough, I know there are different manufacturers and grades. The high cloth variants are vastly superior if you are trying to make armor. Better still, make a hardware store gambeson using metal duct steel, gambeson, and nuts and bolts. The best part is ease of repair and re-manufacture with those things.
would key rings work for mail? or would it need something like nuts to be strong enough. But whatever people say, the hardware store would be my target of choice in case of a zombie apocalypse. Why does this make me think of that show where plump men use weapons to hack at meat, maybe it's the silly countdowns. Happy to see you experiment with the format, so glad that Shad has such amazing people to take care of regular content ♥
22:25 Yes, as car's are made in a way that the casing bends instead of breaking so that it does not break into a sharp piece that pierces through the passengers or cause other problems as such. Also, to absorb the impatct when you hit anything at speed/get hit by something.
would be really interesting if you guys took the idea a bit further. something like diy repairs with modern common items. i.e. if you have the bec de corban you might also have a bow, a few arrow shafts around the spear (or any rod like items from modern times) for structure then wrapped in duct tape, armor made from duct tape layered with other materials in between like old clothes or upholstery, etc.
The shield covering seems the most useful. An easy layer of extra strength for something that's going to be taking a lot of hits. And it's super simple to repair when takes damage. Probably also useful for the hafts of weapons, as it adds extra grip, and could keep a broken haft together just a little bit longer.
i think its worth considering that while duct tape is strong and good at affixing things together, its still made to be torn by hand, so a bladed weapon would just cut the weak points, and spikes just slide between the fibers in the tape. additionally, the stronger fibers are length ways on the tape, so just wrapping around and around rather than having some vertical structure for the spear mightve hurt its chances. anyway! i am loving the boys hitting things, nathan's delighted giggle/snicker any time he pulled something out of boromir got me every time. rip to the bec de corbin tho :(
Man, what a video! I mean I think we all knew it wouldn't work but I love how you guys went an tested it. And to think anyone would put that up against knives spears, hammers, axes, faclatas, broken glass, tax season, a visit from the in-laws, running out of milk and other terrible dangers! But what about dragons?
Don't forget those rare few who remember the Diabolist paper armor from Palladium Fantasy RPG lol (in that game, the Diabolist class, which is specialized in magical writings and words and symbols and such, can render any bit of paper impervious to all damage by writing a silver rune on it. TBF, there are specific rules that limit how effective it can be, but that doesn't prevent my imagination coming up with ludicrous ways to thread strips of paper through larger sheets in ludicrously convoluted ways to create an absolute monstrosity lol)
Mythbusters tested paper armor and they found it to be a little less effective then the metal armor but the paper armor was much lighter and easier to make. Which makes sense as paper is just a thin layer of cloth so if you layer many pieces of paper over each other then you have essentially made gambisen.
@@MrGhosta5 perhaps but the rpg wasn't even talking about multiple layers necessarily, it was literally each individual bit of paper magically becomes completely indestructible meaning it can be literally 1 sheet thin and nothing can technically penetrate it... but a single sheet of uncuttable paper doesn't really distribute force, it more or less wraps around incoming edges/points, so unless you were doing dozens if not hundreds of layers it would still be pretty ineffective at anything shy of maybe preventing poison delivery (which was an angle that was frankly missing from the rules outright)
I can't get enough of Tyranth's face in the thumbnail. He's all "Huuuuufggghhh!" This video was spectacular! Love when y'all meme/mythbust! 5 stars! Excited for the next Boromir. 😂
For the spear, I'd have made a quick v cut in the spear shaft and then shave a corresponding angle cut on the end of the broken part. Then slot them together and wrap with duct tape. It would not be floppy.
With how far up the spear broke and the time it takes to to a somewhat stable tape construction. Might as well use the spearhead to cut the top next to the break into a shape again. You'll end up with a functional spear rather quickly, just a little bit shorter.
I would like to see a duct tape and phone book combo. I read somewhere that you can make cheap body armor from duct tape and phone books that can stop 9mm bullets. I’d be interested in stab-proof though.
I have no chance of testing any firearms, but enough layers of taped toilet paper can stop a knife. Both for cuts and stabs. Longevity is an issue, but if you get hit you're most likely trying to avoid more contact anyway and the whole thing is easy to repair. Making it from small plates makes replacing them pretty easy. Similar to samurai armor or scale armor in general.
That's actually a pretty interesting concept. I wonder if you guys will combine the two ideas, Flex Seal+Duck Tape. It sort of reminds me of the trick they used in the Dr. Stone anime where they used a similar concept involving wood-glue from the tree's and paper from the reeds to make pretty sturdy shields to block spears, clubs, and other projectiles.
I totally dig the videos where you chaps do experiments to see viability. I'm really happy you try to use adequate protective equipment when doing so.... However, I do have a worry for your eyes. Especially in tests where things have the *potential* to go flying. Cmon Shad ol' boy, I know you can afford a few pair of safety goggles for your mini army!! 😀
Wouldn't it be fun to make a video about unconventional knives and blades? I'm a farrier, and I think that my loop knife could deal some nasty cuts, perhaps there are other interesting blades and such to talk about...
I feel like this whole duct tape thing might have some credence for appliance in zombie apocalypse or simply a zombie attacks, based on the power scale of most common zombie tropes.
the typical zombie apocalypse has a lot of things in common with medieval situations. At least in case of combat. The opponents are pretty much exclusively melee fighters, so a strong physical armor that still allows for mobility is key. And weapons are usable in close range but don't use any ammunition that runs out and don't alert any more enemies with loud noises.
Shad-minions: Hey Shad, we might need to buy a new Boromir. Shad: Ok, we are on a budget, but Boromir has served us well. Also, have you guys seen one of my weapons? The beak... *Minions looking at each other sweating? Shad: Guys? Where is my weapon? 2 Minutes later Shad: Give me the duct tape, we found our new Boromir.
Shad, chilling in the chairs by the pool: yeah I can definitely see how thrusts might be a little more effective in terms of underwater combat, but what do you think? Tyranth: brbbrbbrbbrbrlbblblblb
Great video, I love destructive testing videos like this. For a future video you should take another look at Flex Seal, but as armor like you did with the duct tape. You should do what some gun channels have done, take some Flex Seal and cast it into a block, however thick you want or maybe multiple blocks of varying thicknesses, and go to town on it. See how well Flex Seal, by itself, works as armor.
I must say, production in some of the latest videos seems higher, good to see that this colab thingy works out for you, even if the videos do seem a little bit more like they follow a script(which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just more up to personal taste).
Interesting. I haven't watched this video yet, but I actually thought the recent ones have felt like they follow a script less. Not talking about the skits tho.
00:00 Most of the trajectory of the yellow object (unique?) is out of the field. Its horizontal speed when it leaves the camera field seems slightly greater than when it returns.
The thing with regular tape holding better than Flex Seal is that it's more of a fabric, so it helps with structure. Flex Seal is better for a rubbery padding. Also, I prefer to keep all the tape for regular repairs and to seal all holes in the house - that is tremendously invaluable for survival.
If you do replace Borromir you should have a video where you completely and utterly destroy him. Just to give him a proper send off, you know. That's what he would have wanted
I wonder how a few layers of duct tape on top of gambeson would fair. Where something like a shield is fairly solid, gambeson is more compressible; which could help better absorb the force of the blow enough for the duct tape to reduce how much a weapon penetrates/cuts.
Great video! I don't know that I'd trust duct tape against edged or piercing weapons, however I remember a guy in the Walking Dead wrapping his arms with duct tape to protect against bites. That, I could see working. Also fun to see the Honshu Battle Axe in action.
Duck tape is like the fouce it has a light side and a dark side and binds the universe together. Also this gives me a idea for a post apocalyptic story
Have you tested paper armor? In 90s movie "Ricochet" with Denzel Washington, there is a scene in which chest armor was made with duct tape and prison paper back novels.

So glad to see this! Especially the send up to the mythbusters throughout!
@@MrGhosta5 thats, not how i remember that episode going, guess i have to rewatch it, any idea where i could find it =D
You'd have time to do all that in the heat of battle?
With how far up the spear broke and the time it takes to to a somewhat stable tape construction. Might as well use the spearhead to cut the top next to the break into a shape again. You'll end up with a functional spear rather quickly, just a little bit shorter.
God dang that is one badass intro and that had to take so many trys nice effort my guys
Really nice editing with black&white and Shad narration
AS Armor? no... TO HOLD ARMOR ON? yes... LOL
I love how Nate finally has his hands on that Bec de Corbon that he was clearly chasing after in a previous video.
I so wish i saw Shad's genuine reaction to the broken crow's beak.
I just want to praise the intro, that was amazing
RIP Bec de Corbin
Anytime yall get to swing a weapon I can visually see the excitement. So great!
Wouldn't it be fun to make a video about unconventional knives and blades? I'm a farrier, and I think that my loop knife could deal some nasty cuts, perhaps there are other interesting blades and such to talk about...
When Nate told Boromir he's becoming nightmare fuel 😂😂😂 I needed that laugh, thanks Nate.
2 Minutes later
Shad: Give me the duct tape, we found our new Boromir.
I still think a video testing underwater swordfighting would be cool
Shad, chilling in the chairs by the pool: yeah I can definitely see how thrusts might be a little more effective in terms of underwater combat, but what do you think?
Tyranth: brbbrbbrbbrbrlbblblblb
It worked fine in Oblivion and that game is hyper realistic.
Happy April 1st :-)
I am fully expecting a normal (non April fools joke) video, but can't be really sure today :)
Edit: R.I.P. Bec de corbin
Now you have to test WD40 as well! 😉
Maybe as a self backfiring armor?
You mention weapon maintenance, I'd love to see a video on that subject! Also curious what became of the bec de corbin... rip...
wait, duck tape can be used to duck tape duck tape????
00:00 Most of the trajectory of the yellow object (unique?) is out of the field. Its horizontal speed when it leaves the camera field seems slightly greater than when it returns.
Like a fine wine, this channel just gets better with age.
5:50 Lucerne hammer technically not bec da corbin although they are very similar
How many takes did you need for that opening shot?!
one CGI take
Mythbusters and giant sword builders. How far Shadiversity has come.
20:26 "It's a Car door"
I keep getting recommendations for wood chopping swords. I would love to see your guys take on in
The thing with regular tape holding better than Flex Seal is that it's more of a fabric, so it helps with structure.
That's what he would have wanted
love the mythbusters inspired camera stuff, the professionality of the videos has come a long way from Shad sitting on his throne talking.
Looking forward to seeing the borked de corbin in the next tests
20:11 - I has half expecting you to wallop poor Boromir with the car door!
12:18 NINPON POWA !!!!! after 5000 folds
MythBuster was my favorite show, haven't missed 1 episode. You doing that made me very happy. Only things missing are an Epic Mustache and a Beret ;-)
i feel like having tyranth on makes it feel more like a shad vid than when neither he nor shad are present
20:17 I realised you can still see the dent in the castle from when shad hit it with a giant wooden sword while spinning
Appreciate the extra effort put into a loving Mythbuster parody!
I wonder how a few layers of duct tape on top of gambeson would fair. Where something like a shield is fairly solid, gambeson is more compressible; which could help better absorb the force of the blow enough for the duct tape to reduce how much a weapon penetrates/cuts.
If you get a new Boromir, you could call it Shad, just to create confusion and so that Shad can say he's in the video even if he isn't.
2:08 YOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I always thought that the red green show was such a low-key franchise that nobody knew what it was!!! Hell yeah!!!
Have you tested paper armor?
In 90s movie "Ricochet" with Denzel Washington, there is a scene in which chest armor was made with duct tape and prison paper back novels.
_Duct Tape is like the Force._
_It has a Light Side and a Dark Side,_
_And it holds the universe together_
You should have taped the Corben together and handed it over to Shad and "it looked like that when we got it"
7:41 - How to make flail out of spear using duct tape tutorial! That's awesome
