Roy's Brown Bear Hunt

  • I wanted to share an amazing hunt of Roy's I had filmed and edited as a sample for a TV show, Beast Mode Bowhunting, that never came to fruition. I had networks that wanted to have me part of their line up, so I submitted this as an example of what Beast Mode Bowhunting was to me. They didn't like it. They said in this sample they expected me to be playing the role of a larger-than-life hunting "super hero" training hard and do extreme hunts. I told them that I was no super hero and I wouldn't be acting like one and this hunt of Roy's was as extreme and intense as it gets and if I did the show, he would be a big part of it. They said that isn't what they had in mind and I said, well, I guess we don't need to worry about the show then. And, that was that.
For me, I had hosted TV shows already: Eastmans' Bowhunting Journal TV, Elk Chronicles and Team Elk and been on other hunting shows a number of times. I didn't really care, and still don't care, about just doing another show, unless it was exactly what I wanted to do and what I wanted to do was a show with Roy. Anyway, since we couldn't come to an agreement on the show concept, the opportunity went away and Roy and I focused on other things. No biggie to us. Nothing could stop of from doing what we love, adventure bowhunting, TV or not. Since then this hunt has been sitting here and beings it is so good, I felt inclined to share it for free on UA-cam will all my friends and followers. Hope you like it. #riproyroth #roytough

That was a better show than any I have seen on TV. It actually shows the challenge that hunting can be. It shows a multitude of factors that create the "hunt" whether it be other hunters, wind, weather, and even missed shots. I always assumed that it was impossible to show those details in a 30 minute episode because I had yet to see it done like this. It is impressive how Roy's morale was as fresh each day as if it were the first. It is so crazy for me because right before I left for my Alaska Brown Bear hunt this year, I thought to myself that I wanted to inquire about hunting with Roy for Brown Bear within the next two years. Then a couple days later I flew into Anchorage. I just so happened to fly into Anchorage the same day Roy had passed away. I didn't find out he passed until several days later when I got some internet connection, which was the day before I killed my Brown Bear. I am thankful that you posted this video though because it inspires me to never let anything get in the way of killing the animal I am hunting. Im sure Roy is with you in every hunt from now on buddy. Keep your head up and may Roy rest easy.

My friends who taught me how to hunt is Tim Zegland, and Dave Nelson. I was a Florida boy who moved to Minnesota in high school. They taught me how to hunt, how to survive. How to do things right. I am now a father. I now have a 10 year old boy, and will spend my life teaching him ethics. The right way to be. The right way to provide. I appreciate those who came before me, and taught me how to be. Thanks Cam. Thanks Roy.

As I prepare for my Kodiak Bear hunt in the Spring of 2018, thought I would get the juices flowing by watching a few others with their harvest. That was a perfect shot. Bear just laid down and went to sleep. It is a shame people just don't understand wildlife management practices. This type of hunt is not for food, rather to allow sows and cubs to grow. Your harvesting a sow/cub killer. This will be my second Kodiak Bear hunt coming up. The first hunt I passed on the bears I saw wanting a 10 footer. I learned a lot on my first Kodiak hunt and hope to share some video footage this time out. People don't realize that the big bears of Kodiak don't hibernate, instead they seek out the sows that are denned up with their cubs. They will dig them up and eat the cubs and sow if they can This is their whole source of protein during the Winter months and by harvesting a big boar your saving countless sows and their cubs allowing them to mature and populate the area. These big boars have NO predators except man. I am not only helping the habitat, the over $5000 I pay in transportation, lodging and other expenses helps the local economy. Roy seemed like a fine man as well as a father. My condolences to his family. My only regret is not having met him as he lived in the same area as I do. Thanks for sharing this video, of a outdoors man, conservationist, family man and a true Alaskan.
Thanks for posting this as it is an inspiration to all true outdoors men.

It's interesting to hear you relate the process of trying to get a TV show launched. Although yes Cam, you are a celebrity and very interesting and entertaining to watch, most hunters could care less who is up there stalking that brown bear. If the story and the hunt portrays what it's really like in the field, it could be an 80 year old grandmother for all I care. Thanks for sharing Roy's awesome, incredible hunt!
