Something interesting in the DVD extras is the audio log for Elastigirl talking about the quality of her super suit and said something like "You don't want me joining the other team, do you?" With this series taking place in the suped-up 1940's to 1960's, there's no way that wasn't a reference to Soviet Russia. This has the even more interesting implication of Soviet supers and American supers being sent on covert missions against each other all throughout the Cold War

That's certainly an interpretation, but the supers seem to largely act on their own, like independent contractors. It could be that "the other team" means a different team of heroes or a different company. That would also put a layer of separation between the government and the heroes, allowing them to act on their own but if they did something really bad, the government could cut them off. The government would still defend them in a lawsuit because of how much of an asset they are, but if they went off the rails, they'd be able to use the company or heroes as a scapegoat

Things I noticed in The Incredibles:
Elastigirl/Helen has amazing reflexes. She goes into a fighting stance when Edna’s weapons pop out. She’s a far more clever and inventive fighter than Bob, who is a tank.
Bob wearing his mask to dinner with Mirage is an homage to Denny Colt, The Spirit.
Edna totally knew what Bob was up to. She made Bob’s suit with a transponder to get Bob in trouble. Or saved.
I wonder where Mirage came from. Government? How did she and Syndrome find each other? Let’s not forget she found supers knowing Syndrome was going to kill them.
Syndrome was totally a serial killer.

Supers are pretty heavily implied to be government-made super soldiers, which is why Syndrome was so freaked out when he realized that Mr. and Mrs. Incredible had superpowered children; this wasn't something that had happened before.
They were almost certainly made for war originally (don't tell me that Mr. Incredible didn't have experience fighting in forests based on how he was moving around), and then later got turned into super-cops as a PR move. When that came back to sting them, they disbanded supers almost immediately as a policing force, since giving people that much power and basically the ability to wield it freely is a REALLY bad idea. We're lucky the scandal was something as tame as saving a suicide victim, instead of say, any of a hundred different types of abuse of power.

Syndrome's comment in the first movie upon seeing how Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl having kids make it sound like he didn't think Supers could have kids or at the very least super-powered kids, as well as Bob's stressed reactions to solo-raising a super-powered Jack-Jack discovering his vast array of powers in the second movie, as if Supers being naturally born is a fairly new phenomenon and therefore isn't that well-documented or researched. Almost like how Superheroes don't appear naturally. More like that they were made like Captain America or with the Supes from The Boys. Supers are probably genetically engineered or genetically modified super-soldiers. The two movies are set during the 1960's, Bob is about 45, the oldest Super we've seen is about 60+, it is very possible that Supers were made to win World War 2; to counter the Nazi ideology of Aryan superiority and maybe even act as deterrents.

I think it was on the DVD extras but I once saw a sort of deleted scene (it was done shot for shot as sketches, but was fully voiced) in which Syndrome finds out Mr Incredible married Elastigirl by turning up at their house, then when he hears Jack-Jack crying he says "and you had a kid? Oh, you broke the law Mr Incredible, you know supers aren't supposed to breed."
I don't know if that bit of worldbuilding remained canon when it was cut from the film, but I can imagine it fitting into a thing of the government not wanting new supers to come into existence because they only want the supers THEY made to exist. It's POSSIBLE that supers are just naturally occurring, like you have a baby and there's a 1-in-100,000 chance it'll have superpowers, but I could see that causing absolute mayhem and resulting in supers having a really bad reputation (like mutants in X-Men), whereas in The Incredibles the initial opinion of supers seems to be extremely positive, and the police even seem happy to work with them, which makes me think they were definitely an intentional product of the government. The only reason that the government would want to create superhumans is to use as an asset, and when you create superpowered people as a government asset, that just screams "supersoldier"

literally the intro is about how and why all superheroes are registered, the process from Mr Incredible's court case vs Labomb went on for 2 years and resulted in all superheroes being illegal, eventually, but there was for sure a civil-war moment where all supers had to register in case of property damage or public endangerment.
The more sinister and interesting implication is that all supes in that universe where probably engineered by the government, à la "the boys". Think about it, apart from Elasti-girl and Mr. Incredibles kids we never see young supes, the youngest one was that girl Edna talks about who got sucked into a jet engine and I remember seeing stuff on the DVD extra's that seriously hinted at this reality.

Quickfire answers: Yes, the supers were trained and coordinated by the NSA (in this universe the National Superhero Agency).
The NSA did not directly provide supers with their equipment, but they DID introduce supers to specialized tailors such as Edna and they did reimburse the costuming and equipment expenses.
It is possible that the government deployed them in armed conflicts (Meta Man's nemesis was called Baron Von Ruthless, possibly a play on Golden Age villains such as Red Skull and Baron Zemo), but for the most part heroes are only seen acting domestically.

  • @hollowshield2315

my guess is that that world kinda works like the one in My Hero Academia, where they basically are super cops, celebrities, and first responders, but because most people are born with superpowers and there are a ton of supervillains running around the general public adores them as something to aspire to.
one of the villains main motivations is to destroy super society and show that hero's are nothing more than frauds in it for the fame and glory. and it kinda works. when society falls apart, the public hates you, government support has diminished, it's a rare hero who can keep going, and even they have a very rough time. even noble and strong heroes quit because they just can't take the pressure of being a hero in a time where heroes aren't the godlike celebrities they used to be

It really bothered me that Incredibles 2 contradicts a lot of the lore of the first movie. It’s heavily implied in Incredibles 1 that superheroes aren’t born naturally - they’re created later in life.
For one thing, Dash’s teacher and principal never even consider the possibility that he has superpowers when reviewing the tapes. It’s only been 15 years since superheroes disappeared - surely if superhumans were born in the general population, they would consider this? This indicates that the supers were created deliberately, or at least were created in a single known event (like the particle accelerator explosion in The Flash).
For another thing, we don’t see any superpowered villains in the first film. All the supervillains we see (which is, admittedly, only two people) use technology to commit crimes, not innate powers.

I always thought a comic that took the perspective of people who had to deal with superheroes brutalizing them and their loved ones would be interesting.
Bc we all cheer when Spider-Man leaves some guy hanging upside down from a lamp pole, but tbh, that could cause a LOT of harm to someone, and who gave Spider-Man the right, anyhow?

That's exactly the kinda thing J Jonah Jameson voices his concerns about. Sure, Spidey does save the day from a much larger threat, but what does it cost to actually get to that point? What's the amount of collateral damage we should be willing to put up with after every battle?

I should point out there are two fairly disturbing real-world problems with your interpretation. The first is that you can't actually sue the federal government without their permission. So if the supes are government affiliated a lawsuit probably wouldn't work. Similarly if they are cops, then cops have qualified immunity, so a single massive lawsuit would also probably not be able to do anything serious.

There's plenty of media intended for children but watched by teens/adults, Steven Universe and The Owl House to name a couple
