Ed's arrangements are always very deep, when you really listen to the background acompaniment, It's every bit as melodic as the main melody. It ebbs and flows in such a beautiful, subtle way.....and cor blimey!, the ethereal sounding sustain on that Breedlove is something else

I learned this off a DVD of Ed’s performance at a concert put together by fellow guitarist Muriel Anderson. Then I played Ed’s arrangement at my daughter’s wedding. I don’t know if I have the chops to learn it again, but it’s an epic rendition of a beautiful tune.

This is the kind of guitar playing that I have long aspired to, wonderful picking style and the way that the accompanying notes interplay with the melody is just wonderful,. I’m off to find more from Ed and kick the cobwebs from my guitar.

I hit the like button as soon as you played the melody.

Lol...love the reason given for tuning down a half step. Thanks, that was a nice demo of your take on playing that beautiful melody

Wow! Ed Gerhard giving a lesson on his beautiful arrangement of the Water is Wide! This is really a privilege and a great tutorial. I think I can actually play this with a lot of practice.

Wow, Ed that is a wonderful lesson for every fingerstyle guitarist. They don’t teach like that in school and probably in most private lessons.

This is a good lesson for sure. I have played for many years and as I get older and have a finer appreciation for these things, it's allllll about melody. Jerry Garcia's playing is all about melody. Larry Carlton's playing is all about melody. Melody is like the 1 of each measure for drummers -- you must never lose track of it.

This might be the most important guitar lesson ever. Especially the part about mandolin players.

HYSTERICAL comment about mandolin players not being able to jam with you!

There are some videos where I left comment ten years ago and I still can see my comment in higher section- not here though. This song still impresses me every time I listen, so beautiful...ED is like an institution ( we say that a lot when we want to praise someone)
I know guy who lives in small town , it is still my town too - today rural place, with 50.000 people. Once it wasn't like that but because of war 30 years ago and big change of demographic structure all over Balkan it happened, almost everywhere , ..people who lived in villages mostly came to towns - for some it is hard to understand. That chubby guy lived in town on the border with Croatia and he was really poor, he did not have any money and than somehow he started to record some ridiculous short Balkan over stated humor videos, using UA-cam as a platform ( still no competetive option 2) , his humor reminds me slightly on Sacha Baron Cohen's work, but upside down , people like him and who am I to judge? Today he has 7-8 millions subscribers. I am glad, but many are so jealous because his success is beyond just an ordinary success for our terms, not Americans nearly, but I am not quite sure ..last year he made almost 2,5 - 3 millions, people are envy as usual, they think he does not deserve it, and it has nothing with deserve or not, this life we live just do not function according to that imaginary idea people have implanted. ( maybe in promised land in religious domain) Did Ukrainian people deserve this, onslaught from Russians, did we deserve same tragedy that never ends, Did Yemen kids deserve to die every day because of hunger and no one gives a shit, especially those who do it! I know few who do care - not enough for kids to not die, I can go on and on....no one deserves it, did the chubby guy deserve to be an institution?! Why do I write about that here? :( :( Sorry, I really lost it, :)
Anyway I am glad I can enjoy Ed's music here, to be for a few minutes off and relaxed ...hey I just want to say I really love Ed and than I went far off theme which is Ed's music!

"the biggest benefit to me in tuning down a half-step, is that mandolin players can't jam with you"
All that and a sense of humour too!
I must admit I don't get the bit about "Nobody wants to play Blackberry Blossom in F#" Is this mandolin humour?

Not sure what make it is, but it looks like a “Weissenborn” style acoustic Lap Steel.

Jon S is correct. It is his Breedlove “Weissenborn” style lap slide guitar
