      The thing with unremovable lens of the new hero is when you put filters, it adds a layer of glass in it and there's that difference. But I'm not professional. Doesn't really bothers me, its just I love the previous iteration, but I guess we can't have it all.

    I've been waiting for the 8 eagerly and couldn't have asked for a better person to introduce it than you (since this is the first 8 related video I'm watching). Thanks for the breakdown, Chris. The upgrades look promising. I noticed the battery door was on the side on this one, curious to know where the USB C port goes. I use my GoPro's on a helmet with a mic connected and wouldn't want to leave the whole thing open as I had to with the 7

    • @ChristopherFarro
      @ChristopherFarro  4 роки тому +2

      Heck yah!!! The USB-C port is right next to the battery under the door. I think you will have to leave it open or use the new shotgun mic accessory that will be coming out.

    • @cynide89
      @cynide89 4 роки тому +6

      The door opens to the USB-c and the battery, which means an open door is open battery access, which is unfortunate. I see room for a 3rd party to design a replacement door, that has a hole where the USB-c port is, so the battery is covered.

    Great review and comparison to H7. I'm not sold with the "update". The side door seems to me a serious design flaw. How would you protexct the battery compartment and the SD slots from getting dust and/or moisture when having the door open to be able to plug a USB-C connector to feed energy from an external source? Of course the reason for the single door is the bottom mount which is great, And the lens being fixed is a big point to GoPro making extra money swaping scratchjed or broken lenses. How to attach filters?

    • @ChristopherFarro
      @ChristopherFarro  4 роки тому

      Yah, the UBC-C does expose the internal battery bay. It's hard to have all waterproof and access points and no frame. That being said, PolarPro already has filters/NDs for sale for the HERO8! They look rad!

    • @dapster
      @dapster 4 роки тому

      Definitely a dealbreaker for me, along with now putting the battery, micro sd card slot and charging port all in one place. What if you're filming a video while also charging the battery and the battery falls out? Suddenly you're not only out one battery, but now you have to buy a whole new one. Should have kept it on the bottom and never added the foldable clip as we all know those will break eventually as well.
      Did I fail to mention no more mini HDMI out as well? So if you now want to see yourself while filming you can't with the Hero 8 Black.

      @ChristopherFarro  4 роки тому

      Hey Patrick! Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I should have clarified that Protune ups the bitrate to 100Mbit/s. But the HERO7 also has protune available in all video modes so there shouldn't be too much difference in the bit rate between HERO7 and HERO8 (i think, i would have to inquire to get more info on this!).

    Great review but I see some doubts about this new gopro. Would like to test it first before buying it. The images with the hypersmooth boost with a 25% crop does look sharp and also the timewarp lineair mode gives a bad image quality if your asking me. Every body is happy that the frame is gone. That is a bad thing, with the frame the camera is a lillte bit protected when it falls on the ground, now the camera is more fragile whitout it. Last, the battery behind the same door with the usb port is also not the best choice, every time you need this port the battery is also visible. What I do like the most is the new menu, the hero 7's menu was awfull, I like this one a lot. I think I will get one but first I would like to test it.

    Thumb up, Chris and an exceptional review and example recap. Is it just me, or all these changes, sans the body change and exposed lens, the internals of the GoPro Hero 8 are that of the GoPro Hero 7? It seems to me, a simple Firmware/Software upgrade would have provided exactly the features listed to Hero 7 users since the CPU/GPU is the same. Anyway, cheers and well done!!

    • @ChristopherFarro
      @ChristopherFarro  4 роки тому +2

      Yes, I think lots of these changes could be added to the HERO7 via a FW update. But I can't confirm that for sure, there may be new internal lens architecture that allow the camera to get added HyperSmooth Benefits despite the CPU/GPU being the same.

I m a fpv pilot that recently switched from racing to filming, and id like to keep my shutter speed low for the motion blur, but that gives me shaky as hell footage. To get stable one i need higher shutter speeds, but that removes the blur. Is that a solution to get both the blur and the stabilization?

For example skateboarding with hypersmooth on and moving past people the camera tends to blur their faces unless you are super close to them? What do you think? The ultimate is a gimbal still?

    Great video mate, I pretty much live with a Gopro as my main sport is skydiving. Had the 8 on order the second it was avail. Part of me wants to ask what camera you were using to shoot the talking head shots because that was super crystal... the other says I would love to make a jump if you're ever in the midwest and collab on some video. Feel free to poke around on my channel if your curious what ive been up to. HUGE LOVE for the vid and look forward to more.

    ... sorry, I lost count... how many modes were his "GO...TO....POV.....MODE"??

    • @ChristopherFarro
      @ChristopherFarro  4 роки тому

      Hhahahah there are a few different modes for specific scenarios. To summarize: On HERO8, 4k30 4:3 with HyperSmooth for all POV without slow motion (this mode isn't available on HERO7 with HyperSmooth so it was previously unusable in most use-cases); this is one of my favorite upgrades to the HERO8. This mode replaces 2.7k30 4:3 on HERO7. For Slow Motion, I still recommend 2.7k60 4:3 on both HERO7 and HERO8 except now you have better stabilization on the HERO8. For uber slow motion, I recommend 1440p120 on both HERO7 and 8. Again, better slow stabilization on HERO8!

    hm, will the GoPro now be able to hold a wifi connection reliably to a camera 1 m away from the phone? The DJI Osmo Action can. How about not freezing that often and needing to remove the battery to get it going again? Is the app fixed so I don't need to click through all the irrelevant spam before I can start filming? Has the tough responsivened of the screen been improved? It hardly ever does what you want it to go.

    • @ChristopherFarro

      Hmmmmm, seems like you have had some issues! Make sure you FW is up to date as that usually fixes all the issues. I haven't had any issues with my HERO7s. That being said the HERO6 screen was a little finicky, especially when wet.

    I don't know how much of it is due to UA-cam compression, but HyperSmooth Boost looks so incredibly blurry/soft? I know it can't be out of focus, but it's so not sharp it looks like it's out of focus... :/ Can't wait to get my own Hero8 to try it out for myself.
    Great review though!

    Thanks for the video! Based on the hypersmooth in all modes, I assume that it will also work in 2.7k/120 fps in the linear view? This is the setting I shoot with the most.

    • @ChristopherFarro
      @ChristopherFarro  4 роки тому

      Hey Trevor! HERO7 and HERO8 do not support 2.7k120 in Linear View. That being said, 2.7k120 Wide will have HyperSmooth 2.0 on the HERO8 (not supported on HERO7).

    • @ChristopherFarro
      @ChristopherFarro  4 роки тому +1

      The battery has a 0-100% charge indicator so that is super helpful. The 8 has several red LEDs that blink when recording. It's pretty obvious when recording but not obtrusive.

    • @ChristopherFarro
      @ChristopherFarro  4 роки тому +1

      I like to shoot 4:3 as I get to control how the footage is stretched in post. Superview is a great solution if you want it stretched in-camera; i just prefer to have control over it. Lots of time, I will just choose to crop instead of stretching, if I shoot in SuperView than cropping isn't an option. I plan on doing an "Understanding 4:3 Footage" tutorial.

    It's annoying that GoPro add UX improvements that are strictly UX... and have nothing to do with the internals yet lock features away from the Hero 7 Black... Linear should be available in all modes, as it's cropping the image, DSLR's do this for 4K all the time (it's annoying sure but better than fisheye).
