I value the ROG Ally X far more for its very long battery life and familiar OS. Basically a gaming laptop without the bulkiness. Perfect for traveling with.
@@The44sasquatch i held off for a long time thinking it really wont make a difference. But once i installed bazzite my ally x is perfect! The games run better on bazzite
As someone whos been looking into buying one, I dont see a best of both worlds. The Steam Deck has a significantly lower cost, bigger screen, OLED, better battery life and already has Linux. The only reason to get an Ally is if you want Windows or if you're trying to get the extra power and intend to use it with a dock (because more power when on battery is irrelevant and we're talking a few frames difference at best).
@@hoofhearted4 All the buttons on the Ally X feel better, it has 2 USB ports, Extra RAM, Better sound, uses standard M.2 2280 SSDs for cheaper 4 & 8TB upgrades, and despite the commoners thinking Windows isn't a perk, you're all missing out on major flexibility with app compatibility, mods etc. I use Big Picture Mode if I NEEEEED it to look like a console, which is the lowest thing on the priority list for me.
Not a major factor, but I just want to let it be known that Decky Loader can really open up worlds for Steam Deck customization, allowing you to customize almost every visual and audio aspect of the device. You can change the system sounds, the game capsule artwork on the homescreen, home screen background music, and even the Quick Access Menu and its toggles. It really just makes it feel like your own fully personalized handheld in my opinion. I’m not sure if the Ally X has something similar considering it runs on Windows, but there’s probably something out there.
I went with the Steam Deck, it offers a great value and overall experience. In Europe the Rog Ally X starts at 900€ while the Deck remains at 570€ starting with the 512gb model. It just doesn’t make sense to spend that much more for the performance upgrade the Ally offers, if you use it as a secondary device beside a decent PC.
I have them both Deck OLED and Ally X for different needs. -Deck OLED for AAA & emu gaming, user friendly. my goto backlog gaming. ergonomics to me is superb! the screen is cleeean! -Ally X for online gaming on the go no question! no anti-cheat restrictions, and it plays all current games but…. it’s windows. and the ergonomics feels cheap in comparison to the deck, so there’s that. Conclusion, while I love em both, if I had to go for just one. Ally X. Only because it works well with Bazzite for that Steam OS!
Another review that glosses over the single most important difference between the two: Immediate/Reliable suspend/resume. You mention it at the last second for 2 seconds and move on.
@@KnightMD quick suspend and resume is handy for sure but unfortunately the underpowered chipset on the Steam Deck doesn't do it any favours when it comes to AAA games as it struggles to even reach 30fps on many.
I had a steam deck oled and moved to a ally x. I’ve since returned the ally and am moving back to the steam deck. The deck is way way more comfortable and that oled screen 😊
I own both and let me tell you, the rog ally x makes the steam deck look so slow. I installed bazzite on it so that I get the best of both worlds. Haven’t picked up my steam deck since then. All games run on medium to high settings with 1080p set smoothly. Games just look grainy and pixelated compared to the rog ally
1. Steam deck is much cheaper 2. You simply don't have enough control abilities to play any games with comfort. 3. You still don't have proper sleep function even with bazzite 4. Oled screen with HDR is much more juicy (IMHO).
I pick the steam deck oled for the main purpose of gaming on the go, if i want nicer graphics resolution and smoother faster frame rates i would use my gaming desktop, I understand that the rog ally has more power but most aaa games will be running on low or at the most medium settings, this goes for most if not all handhelds. Another reason is the controls, steam deck has the most number of buttons and trackpads, i think zotac zone is the only one that is similar... they are all customizable... i can do macros for strategems on helldivers2... one thing that sealed the deal for me is being able to remote play with my gaming pc, i use tailscale-sunshine-moonlight setup to play within and outside my home network,i am able to play using my mobile hotspot, starbucks or airport free internet, etc. since it streams from my desktop gaming pc i can do high to ultra settings on all games (i have a 12700k 4070ti desktop), graphics is great on the oled... battery life is awesome in remote play, i can play 5 missions of helldivers2 and it would only drain around 10-20 percent of the battery... i would rather use a laptop for "desktop" use...
The Ally X has better battery life and better performance at the same TDP as the Deck. Increasing the TDP only makes it even better. The great thing about the Ally is that you don’t need a desktop PC companion for better performance. You can lower the TDP for better battery life when on the go and plug it in when you're back home. Having two devices PC and Deck just to play at home and on the go is a waste of money-plus, you’d need fast internet just to stream your games. On the Ally you don't need a PC you just need the Ally heck if your not satisfied external GPU is there as well. Deck doesn't support external GPU and it has a lot of limitations as well so I can only recommend deck to people who already has a powerful PC.
@@nathanjuan6042 nah that oled screen and the os is what draw me in, i have good pc (rtx3060 with ryzen 5900). while its not as powerful as before, but for more demanding games that i cant play in my deck, its good

Steam deck is the way to go until maybe microsoft fixes win11 but i hardly believe they would turn off all the telemetrics crap and the busybody that is windows. The one thing i miss when switching from my win PC to the deck is lossless scaling, if it was available for the deck it would be a game changer.
Been looking at the Steam Deck recently. I dont personally see any reason to get an Ally X unless you have no other method of gaming (like a PC or console). The better hardware only matters if its plugged in because it'll eat through your battery and if you have a PC or Console, you can play those super demanding games on those. The significantly cheaper price of the Deck, bigger screen, OLED, better battery life, and SteamOS, make it the obvious winner for handheld gaming.
U know Ally x has better battery life, even when using more power right? Ally and Ally x, especially with Bazzite, has become much better than then steam deck. Plus VRR is more important than oled
Yep, I've been using PS5 and/or it's remote play to play bulkier games. The games I play natively are usually older backlog games, indies and Pc games (like Zomboid and Dwarf Fortress) thanks to the touchpads.
