Thanks one's again. I was really stuck in there without you guys I would not have get out the mud. Thanks again and enjoy your stay in the Netherlands. Greetings from Laurens from Durgerdam.
Ha! Was that you with your mast stuck in the mud!? Glad we could help. We were always taught to keep the stick side up ;) but I guess that rule isn’t as important on smaller boats. That was one heck of a day to be out sailing. 25+kts.
Exact thing happened to me before, a 420 in pretty much exactly mast depth, stuck directly upside down , but we had no idea why and kept fighting it until someone else pulled us out. We were cold and exhausted quickly. And now I just sail a laser on inland lakes and capsize all the time too. Keep having fun!
In that position you can often get the mast out of the mud by gently bouncing on the daggerboard. It can take a little while but once you break the suction it will come back up, doesn't make it any cleaner though!
@@dwarftoad We deliberately flipped our O'Day Daysailer II to see how difficult it would be to recover without help. Luckily we had help around because our mast also got stuck in the mud. We were careful never to flip it again.
Dan and Kika, I have been sailing since I was 10 years old in Miami. It was fun through the 1980's but the culture in South Florida really seems to have changed dramatically over the last 20 years. Thanks for making it enjoyable again. You guys are what all sailors should be. Fun, friendly, and helpful. I love your outlook and enthusiasm.
Land yatchs... alright. I remember these back on Lake Dundas on the goldfields in Western Australia in the early 1980's.They can really get a head of steam up in the right conditions. Way to go Kika and Dan.
Great video - as always. You mentioned DSC (Digital Selective Calling) and said calls were 'private'. As you say if you know the MMSI of another vessel you can call them - part of this includes specifying which channel you then want to talk on - for e.g. '8'. Once the other vessel acknowledges both radios will switch to the selected channel (8 in this case) and you can then converse. The conversation would not be private in that any other 'radio' in range and on channel '8' would be able to listen in. - Sorry if that is Granny and eggs! May you have fair winds..
Yep, I came here to make the same comment. A DSC radio uses the same public channels as a normal radio so you don't have a private conversation. Loved the video and the land yachts looked great fun.
Such imagination for the Patreon go-karting meet. Brilliant idea!!! So fun. Those dinghys that capsize are the best way to learn wind and sail too. Nice that you rescued the turtler.
Hello, I'm Portuguese. And I like sailing boats and I decided to watch all your videos that took me 15 days. So I am enjoying following your story. Cheers
Just finished binge watching all of your 221 steps from start to finish and I must say, I feel kind of sad now for finishing it lol. Thanks for awesome top quality content, I enjoyed each and every episode. What a great team you two are! Looking forward to the next episode. Love from South Africa.
Your doing a great job representing canada. My wife and I are watching your videos and totally enjoying them . As well we are fully impressed with the reno job that the two of you did on your home .
Thank you for another great video. I find myself grinning from joy watching you. It is an escape from the grim reality of life in the USA right now. Much needed...
Dan, I’m an electrician and I’m impressed with the skills you’ve developed. You are very autodidactic! If y’all are ever in the North Gulf of Mexico near the Mobile Bay stop by and I can hook you up with some electrical tools! Stay safe!
Another great video! That guy must have been so relieved to get a hand with his mast stuck in the mud:-) (so nice that he found your channel to thank you! The new radio sounds amazing! Hope the remote handset floats :-)! Good to see someone bought Dan shoes:-)! Amsterdamn must be amazing to visit as a cruiser - like you say literally everywhere is on the water :-)! Thanks again for making such a lovely video.
Being of Dutch extraction, it does my Hollander heart good to see you've enjoyed your time with the Dutch "Umaniacs" in their wild quest to land sail race. (maniacs used in best possible sense)
It's always rough when the centerboard falls out. I remember as an older kid at a regatta, with very shallow water,; I capsized my own laser (and had an inflatable hold my mast from going under) then swam down to free a younger sailors mast from the mud. It can be scary for a new 14 year old in a laser out of an opti if the wind picks up.
helo sailing uma i love that you guys are here in my country the netherlands i am a skipper on 1 of the traditional sailing vessels here if you guys need any local knowledge on what spots are cool to go to let me know
Re-found you guys on the tube because im stuck in a foreign country missing the boatlife! Your videography has grown so well since the beginning. Keeping myself and many others spirits up in these times! Thanks for all your dedication guys ......./).......
Yeah we call getting your mast stuck like that a choc-top :) often if you hang on to the bow it will turn around in the breeze and you can get up. Have to be careful not to bend the mast if you are helping with this. Chucking a line over the gunwale and pulling works as at that point the hull is usually to windward (and pushing the mast into the mud)
This is great! I had built a landsailer out of aluminum irrigation pipes from my family’s farm but there were not many flat, open spaces in Maryland with consistent wind to actually use it.
Mast in the mud. THAT brings back memories. Hobie 14 on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the early '70s. The mast height almost always exceeded the water depth.
Back in my younger years some 60 years ago my dream was to find myself a thirty-foot pontoon Base and build me a cabin on it and call it home on the rivers of America... I was going to have a ramp on it so I could get my motorcycle on and off of it... But Uncle Sam call me change my mind on everything... So I had to leave the rivers to Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer .... so my river adventures written on paper between the covers of a book... it's amazing I had all these dreams, but back in the days you didn't live out your dreams you did what you did to survive hopefully work a good job and raise you a family that's what was expected of you. That's what they called being a man of Honor. Living by your word and your word was your bond with other people. I was always a DieHard biker. And that put a black mark on my head... But as always a man of my word... I love seeing the way that God is blessing you kids that you get to live out your dreams and enjoy traveling and blessing old men like me. I get to lay here and watch your videos I thank you for that... Well with much love and prayers you kids be blessed in Jesus name... BBE 🤗🤗
I just found you guys on the tube the last 24 hours..... of all the adventurers on the big salty, you guys are a real team! Really enjoy what you do..... HE is very knowledgeable and SHE is absolutely charming! Will be keeping up as I can.... Happy Trails, Happy Sails!!
My concern too. It's so easy for things to go overboard on a boat - I know. I have a neck strap for my mobile phone and I would have lost it many times before without it.
Dan & Kika your video content continues to evolve and improve. I really enjoy how you mixed up the editing style and story telling which keeps SV UMA video fresh and fun. Next level and it keeps rising. The land sailing looked like a blast. Keep having fun and thanks for bringing us with you on this step of the journey! Cheers!
It was so much fun to see. Nice you enjoyed beeing here. Have fun with the next trip. Of course we keep following. Yesterday we were binge watching Ran. And we saw you at Ran that was fun.

great episode-- loved the land sail adventure- at least you got a proper sailing lesson--was a double Uma day as my T-shirt came in and your latest adventure. So keep up the fun- you guys earned it the hard way.
HI Dan and Kika, so nice to see you guys sailing through the Netherlands. A little side note: in the Netherlands inland waters such as IJsselmeer and Markermeer it is not allowed yo broadcast on 25 watts but only on 1 watt. This due to small sixe of the Nehterlands and quite a few bridges and locks use the same vhf -channels. Anyway, this said, happy sailing!
Nice VHF install there Dan! Since this is my field, I would ask you if the ground lug of the radio is connected to a ground strap that probably should be connected to a metallic plate somewhere close to the keel of Uma? Not only will the ground connection act as a counter-poise to your antenna system, it will also give the system some protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD). God only knows what a lightening strike could do to the rest of the electrical. Glad you have everything on a circuit breaker! Cheers!
I learned to sail in the North Bay of San Francisco (and I also sail Lasers (the same one design that guy flipped (which is very very very normal, it was a rare day with more than 5 knots wind without flipping at LEAST once). There are floats you can buy for the masthead to stop that, or.... since the head of the sail is just a two inch wide band of canvas strapping it is VERY easy to tie something to it (an empty bleach bottle works great since the handle is easy to tie to). I have stuck the mast just like that! Two piece mast, she was so jammed into the mud that I had to LIFT the boat off the mast and managed to get the bottom/foot of the mast and hull (darned centerboard sank!) and I got to swim/stand into four feet of mud to get the board, sail and top of the mast!
So great to see you again, Dan couldn't be without a job, and what with heaving bags of produce, Help!!!!😂 . Hope that handy VHF is able to float, can see this flying into the sea😉. great to see you guys! Lol ⛵⛵⛵⛵💞
Ever thought about getting your amateur radio license? Your not limited to the power you can put out plus with HF you can talk around the world. Really nice to have when your thousands of miles away from anyone. You can raise someone if needed at any time anywhere on this planet. 👍
Love your videos guys. As a dinghy sailor I would just like to provide you guys with some FYI. That sailing dinghy capsized again on the 2nd time, his boat wasn't pointing into the breeze but was was horizontal to the breeze so when he brought the boat back up, the wind actually caught his sail and tipped hime over again.
We had an absolute blast, it was great to meet you and all manner of like minded people with similar dreams and interests. Thanks Dan and Kika for organising it and thanks Rutger for making his venue available :D Also, great new VHF, that B&G stuff is really nice, especially if you have your entire system by them and you can combine their information
Working through my subscriptions, hearing the "toooooot toooooot" horn at the start of your vid put a smile on my face, didn't realise I was feeling flat... but I'm not any more! Thanks for sharing.
Another video well done. You all have become such good videographers. And are more able to portray reality than the pros. They call it amateur video, I call it better video. Unfiltered and real.
without people like you Kika and Dan the world who'd be a worse place. And humanity would probably be living in caves foraging for food and wonder why there friend got eaten by that big cat. Exploring inventing and reaching for the horizon is what defines a great human being. I wish you all the best on your continued journey.
Great vid and you give a great view on how much time we like to spend on the water ... preferably with our sails out 😃 There is a lot more water and harbors to visit 😅 In regards to the VHF, maybe handy to know that on the inland waterways (anything not sea) ships monitor channel 10 (iso 16) like you would 16 at sea. But ... a lot of Dutch there 🤣😜 Enjoy!
Love 💗 y’all! I find the sound of the water totally relaxing any time of day. I live totally inland in Missouri far away from fresh seafood, waterways, waves and the peacefulness of watching boats bouncing on the water. I was a master reading teacher before retiring this past July. I bought a couch, but love the t-shirts. Will your merchandise include long sleeved t-shirts? Lately, I want just want to jump through the screen and borrow Dan’s! Teachers all have the Spirit of Peter Pan, 🧚🏽♂️we never want to grow up. Happy sailing ⛵️
Oh my gosh. I could do that. I could do that as I don’t need to walk to do it. I’m so excited. This land sailing must be in Australia as well. I hope so. Thank you thank you thank you. And Kika no one has ever rocked an Amber helmet as well as you just did. I watched your silks dance last night again as I needed a break from all the sadness in the world right now. I’m not running away from it, I just needed to recharge my spirit. I know this is a sailing channel however that may have been your most beautiful segment of filming. It’s like you made us forget the camera was even there. I hope that makes sense. It really moved me. I hope you understand my comment as it’s hard to find the right words. Thank you both.
I was thinking last night about the price of that new radio vs what you guys paid for Uma. Then seeing Dan zoom around in the dinghy vs the old Port-a-boat. You have come a long way.
If you can find the time, try to get in to the marina of the island of Vlieland. Rather tricky... The island is probably one of the prettiest places in Holland.
Yep welcome to the Netherlands. Weather is never very stable here. Yesterday it was real hot and full sunny. Today it began very nice. clouds came in but still ok. Then a cool breeze came along and it was just good enough to feel ok in shorts. Started up the bbq and while the 700 gr ribeye was getting it's crust I started to set the outside table. And just when that was done it started to rain. Moved everything inside while the meat was still on the bbq and as soon as it was done and we sat inside eating our meal, it was dry again and the sun came out. grr that is life over here. I hope you will enjoy over here.
Can you call "Bouy Room" or "Starboard" when sailing with those things??.. haha... They look like Great fun.. pitty they are not here in Melbourne Australia or they would be very busy and lots of fun.... That's a great idea having the radio panel on a push lock clip and hinged, so if you need to work on it or something goes wrong. That Handset needs a lanyard or something so you DO Not drop or lose it overboard. Another great episode.
Thanks one's again. I was really stuck in there without you guys I would not have get out the mud. Thanks again and enjoy your stay in the Netherlands. Greetings from Laurens from Durgerdam.

I can sympathize with you. Lasers love going upside down downwind

Thanks for dropping by all you ‘umanians’ we had a blast 🥳😎🏴☠️
Sailing uma is my favorite channel on UA-cam right now!! Keep up the fantastic work and stay safe.
I used to race a Laser They are so TIPPY especially downwind, narrow and round bilged, Their natural point of sailing downwind is upside down.
😂👍
I have the same experience with the OK dinghy. It tips “over” you when going down wind
Land yatchs... alright. I remember these back on Lake Dundas on the goldfields in Western Australia in the early 1980's.They can really get a head of steam up in the right conditions. Way to go Kika and Dan.
Every time I watch one of your uploads, I feel like you’re sharing something valuable and dear with me. Once again I say, thank you so much.
Couples like y'all put a big 😃 smile on my face because of what's happened in the world (USA) at the moment !

you guys give me hope for humanity. i've never seen any content creators do anything for their patreons other than be beggars.
This looked like the most fun you had had with people in a while. Great that you guys did that for the Uma Nation!

The Drascombe Coaster (2:43 tanbark sails with the mizzen) made me smile a lot. I have a 40 year old Drascombe Lugger that is my pride and joy.

That's a nice VHF, it's so nice of B & G to supply you with all these goodies, it's good for them and good for you
The joy for life that the two of you share brightens the day, week, month, year, thank you for sharing your joy.
Be safe find joy

Best catch phrase ever! "Wait, did I forget to say stuff?"

We enjoyed your land yacht sailing adventure, and also the B&G install. Thanks for sharing, and Safe travels.
As a Canadian I just love the Dutch. Such great people and amazing country ✌️
Kika, you look so happy and full of radiance. Being with the patreons must be a wonderful feeling...
Just make sure you don't drop that nice remote overboard from the cockpit, maybe a lanyard can be used
Good call. Murphy's Law is unforgiving.
That's what I thought too. You'd think there would be a way to tie to a frequency for a normal handheld radio.
My concern too. It's so easy for things to go overboard on a boat - I know. I have a neck strap for my mobile phone and I would have lost it many times before without it.
Dan the man, with the magic hands!! You two always make my day!!!
Awesome! Thx a lot. Saw Kika yesterday in the German "Segeln" magazine. Advertisement for B&G. Congrats!
It looks like great fun, pretty lady. Thanks for sharing the fun with us. God Bless.
Another great video ... Stay Safe & Fair Winds !!
It may sound a little strange, but I was very proud of the way Kica sailed. He looked like a professional navigator in action. So hooray and a big thumb up for Kica, who is really a good and great navigator.
My favorit channel - keep up the good work, if you have the time and the chance, you should visit Denmark, not very long from where you are now, all the best
great episode-- loved the land sail adventure- at least you got a proper sailing lesson--was a double Uma day as my T-shirt came in and your latest adventure. So keep up the fun- you guys earned it the hard way.
I live just around the corner of where you did the Sail carts... I have done the sail carts in the beach some time ago and these are really cool!
Hee awesome video and thx for the day we had an great afternoon with you All.
Cheers!
Excellent! A really different activity and you both made it look so easy, brilliant!
How can anyone give a thumbs down! I just do not get that! What is negative? Heya Uma you totally rock and I am so glad you did not buy that couch!
I really liked the part of the kid who couldnt get his laser under control. it is hilarious. Thank you for Rrecording it!
Love my Friends❤ thx Luna
"See ya next time porcupine."
love it.
after while crocodile , or later gator
Loved that buggy sail, looks real fun!!!😂😂😂
Super cool ambiance 👌👍⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵
I absolutely loved to see episode from my country. Thank you!
That looked like so much fun! Great Video to put a smile on my face. Take Care Guys.
Love this video!! Helping people out is what it’s all about. Luv y’all’s energy....
So great to see you again, Dan couldn't be without a job, and what with heaving bags of produce,
Help!!!!😂 .
I always like your installations, very clean and thought out. To many boat projects look cobbled up.
Just a fantastic (and fast) 19 minutes. Thanx you two. :-)
Love your videos guys. As a dinghy sailor I would just like to provide you guys with some FYI. glad you like the netherlands, nice country for sailing
Kika and Dan, the videos are getting better and better. It's like watching an episode of television: great editing guys.
Had a great day! Thank you for organising this!
Working through my subscriptions, hearing the "toooooot toooooot" horn at the start of your vid put a smile on my face, didn't realise I was feeling flat... but I'm not any more! Thanks for sharing.
We had fun watching this video. I have a t-shirt idea for you guys... "Sold the damn couch!" for those of us who finally let go and liveabord. 😜😂
You two are two beautifull human beings,Thank you for being and sharing who you are.
Great episode guys loved the land sailing and may look into it here in summer but am particularly interested in that vhf - what a cool idea!
Another video well done.
You all have become such good videographers. And are more able to portray reality than the pros.
They call it amateur video, I call it better video. Unfiltered and real.
Great videography and editing as usual. Loved seeing that the Dutch are still windsurfing (not kitesurfing Kika!). I used to love doing that...sigh!
The wheel sailing looked like a blast. Looks like a good way to learn the sails and wind directions.
Those carts are SOOOOOO cool! I got to sail/drive one when the America's Cup was here a few years ago. Had a blast!
without people like you Kika and Dan the world who'd be a worse place.
And humanity would probably be living in caves foraging for food and wonder why there friend got eaten by that big cat.

Channel 10 in Europe inland waterways, lakes (Markermeer/Ijsel Meer) for distress and safety.
Land sailing is one of the most fun things I've ever done! Dry lakes in southern California and 50 knot+ winds!!!! WAHOoooo!
That land sailing looked fun! Glad everyone had a good time.

Your dolly sailing reminds me of watching the ice boats on Hamilton Harbour when it froze over in winters. Similar principles but much faster.
That was for some time (before there were cars) the fastest land vehicle there was!
Great stuff you helped this guy ! Thank you.
🌊⛵Uma.. great to see you guys having fun wherever you go..
I was thinking last night about the price of that new radio vs what you guys paid for Uma. Then seeing Dan zoom around in the dinghy vs the old Port-a-boat. You have come a long way.
Are you sailors. Filmmakers. Entertainers. I can't decide. It's pure fun catching a ryde on the Uma train.
Bloody brilliant, my dears!
Keep safe, and carry on 'groovin'!
✌😘😘
IN Wisconsin where I grew up people sail on ice boats on frozen lakes. Of course it was usually too cold to fire up the barbie. Good job guys. Kay
Best catchphrase ever “ wait did I forget to say stuff “.
If you can find the time, try to get in to the marina of the island of Vlieland. Rather tricky... The island is probably one of the prettiest places in Holland.
You always bring a smile to my face. Thanks for sharing again.
Nice that you are enjoying my birth town...We still cannot travel far, for at least sometime, at least till July 1
You're so funny and inspiring! Love you guys!
That looked amazing.
Loved this. Looked like an awesome day. Oh Annette saw your hard drives and knows I like orange. But I have no idea who makes those.
