  • This has got to be the best place in Europe to sail in the winter. In fact having sailed most places in Europe in winter over the year I can safely say there is no comparison!
    Trade wind sailing, Xmas on the beach in hot sun and rain forest like mountains are all waiting for you in the Spanish and Portuguese islands off the coast of Africa, but you're still spending Euros!
    In this episode we visit Porto Santo, Madeira and the Canary Islands, all glorious destinations in December and January. This is definitely a unique way to spend Xmas in Europe.

    I have always loved your channel. It's so nice to see people over 50 out cruising. It's great inspiration for those of us still launching birds from the nest. Please keep it up.

      Truth be told all the cruisers you will come across are over 50, its only the YT channels that aren't!

    Madeira is wonderful. The levadas are a masterpiece. Can't imagine how all the concrete was transported.

    As fairly recent subscribers, we've been waiting for this episode - while on holiday in Madeira, we were delighted to see Fair Isle moored up. She's an impressive size "in the flesh". As Madeira addicts (this was our 6th Christmas there) we were keen to see how you described the island - while with my sailing hat on, I wanted to see how on earth you manoeuvred out of that berth! Nice work all round!

      We would have loved to stay longer things just got pushed because we spent so much time in Lagos sorting out the mast.

    As much as the 2 of you filmed in Africa this abundance of water must be a stark contrast from some of your previous adventures. Thank you for bringing me along.

      Yes it’s certainty very different from Africa, but I have to say as Brits we should be used to rain but I can say this is the wettest I’ve ever been on dry land!

    I love the production value that you two add to your footage, which is absolutely spectacular. The map inserts are dynamic and lovely.

    Wow, what an incredible episode! It's amazing how you continue to enhance your footage with stunning production value, especially those dynamic map inserts. The way you navigate through Madeira is truly impressive, and it's great to see you exploring lesser-known places like Pico Ariero and Pico Ruivo at sunrise 😄👍🌟❤️

    those wide panoramic shots of Grand Canary mountains remind me of many places I go to in Colorado, especially the Western Slolpe; the trees and the ruggedness or the rock. It's just not 10,000ft above sea level

    Great vlog again ! My advise before approaching The Gambia; be well prepared; (food)stores, maintenance and even fuel could be challenging over here. Watched just on YT a skin-crawling interview about a solo sailor attacked by pirates. Curious what about your thoughts. Anyway, a big like from The Gambia.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  6 місяців тому

      Yes there are challenges but we’ve worked in West Africa many times and The Gambia is definitely one of the easier places to be, we’ve made 3 documentaries there in the last 6 years and Judy did her research for her PhD there so we know the place and the people very well. Even interviewed the president!

    Our Maderia Guide referred to the harvesting gullies 'Laverdaaaaaaah' like that ....
    But we all stopped laughing at her at the 1,800M high viewpoint with the death defying drop.

    Thanks Guys, another great video. Yes, the approach to Funchal airport is a little hair-raising the first time...and once you know exactly how the runway is supported, I'm not sure it gets any better..! Good luck with your prep for the crossing, and I guess Steve will be coming up with all sorts of excuses, some better than others, for stripping the handlers bare...

    Sometimes people invent strange names for stuff they not really grasp. Of course, what you the female captain calls mist or in lower areas fog is nothing but the good old clouds, what else. These clouds are governed by the same laws as the one higher up. Did you know that the average cloud cover in Europe is between 500m high, but can be between 1000m to 1500m too. How high were you up on the Madera mountains?

    The Canaries were the European pilot for murdering indigenous people, territorial conquest, deforestation and enslaving millions, eventually exporting that horror show westward to the new world. Can’t wait to see your experience in Senegal if you make it. Happy New Year! 🎉

    How is Starlink behaving? Do you use it in preference to cellular when in a marina?

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  6 місяців тому +2

      We would if we were in the marina on shore power because it’s much faster but the cell speed is good in the anchorage so the Starlink only gets used in the evening if we want to watch a film. It’s rock solid though as the minute we leave here we will be dependent on it 100%

      You can use the standard mobile tariff if you are coastal sailing. This is less than $100/month depending on where you sign up. This is good for whatever continent you signed up in. We will be moving from Europe to America so in theory this option will not work once we cross, but apparently it’s possible to re register your dish in another continent, we will see! To do this properly you should sign up for global mobile from the start but this is 3x the cost. When your out at sea you can either switch contracts ( which you do in the app) to mobile priority which cost you 3x as much and gives you 50GB of data. The best way though is to just turn on priority data as you sail off shore and your data will be charged per GB ( it’s less than $2 / GB)

    Just wondering? Is the weight of Fair Isle too much for a hydro vain self steering ? I think Hydro Vain said 25 tons is about the limit of its ability and being a full keel it might make it even harder to steer . I think Hydro Vain is probably the best there is , what is your opinion? Thank you .

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  6 місяців тому

      The Hydrovane will cope with Fair Isle no problem, we’ve had lots of correspondence with them and met them at the boat show. There’s an interview Will on the Annapolis episode. I agree Hydrovane are the best

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  6 місяців тому +1

      It's best to be vague about where you're heading when you check out, if we had said we were going to Porto Santo then they may have been reluctant to check us out, just extra work for them. It does depend on the official on the day though. When we checked into Porto Santo we were paying the harbour dues in the office and the immigration guy came over to look at our passports and said he would be happy to check us out for the trip to Madeira, hardly worth it for 1 day but some officials want to help some really don't!
