I disagree. This is not Magic (as much as I love it) where you're (as a player) supposed to know if it is a valid target or not. Here, you are not, or more precisely the character is not always supposed to. You can, as a character, try to hit a ghost to discover it is perfectly immune to physical attacks, something you didn't know before. In the same way you can try a counterspell on something that looks to you like a spell but in fact isn't. And to add to it, even Magic let you choose only a valid target but waste the spell/ability if the target disappears before the ability resolution. For example, you can counter a removal spell by sacrificing your own creature and use this sacrifice to launch another spell. The removal has no effect anymore as the target is already gone, but it stills "happens", and is wasted. To go back to DnD, what happens if you counterspell a spell at the same moment someone else does? Does the first one has to try, and then if he fails only the other spell trigger? For me, as a DM, no, both counterspells trigger even if the first one to be rolled is enough. Because a fraction of second is not enough for the character to assert if his ally got it right and then decides if he wants to try himself. Even if you, as a player, can. All this to show it is some very important part of the "triggers" and "valid target" mechanics in any game. It adds layers upon layers of risk-taking and learning the abilities, among other elements. It is even more important in a narrative game as DnD is because there is no narrative justification about the counterspell being not wasted. The character tries to launch it. And can. She just does it on "nothing" as there is actually no spell to counter. And it is useful in itself because you learn from that the "spells" the enemy uses aren't spells at all.
Maxime Minimoi Cha-Jdr as for the rules of d&d counterspell can be cast only when a spell is happening so you can’t waste it and it makes sense because: think of enemy spellcasters, what happens when the players cast a spell? They say what spells they cast before casting it so enemy counterspell is in that point much more powerful than player counterspell and can’t be waisted, and that is unfair. So to conclude, according to the rules mark made a mistake (maybe he will homebrew otherwise but that will give a potent advantage to enemy countepells) and just like they play with shield that the player can do it after the roll (and mark in the last campaign played like that with counterspell and shield with his villains...)
Sherlock Hulmes very well, at least now you know and I’m glad you have learned. and this a complete suggestion mine is that because you homebrew a lot to spell like effects (sentry’s glove is similar to aggnazzr’s scorcher for example) maybe give the abilities a spell level so they to could be counterspelled if they are to similar to a spell... (this is only a suggestion that I came up with and I don’t know if it is balanced, so it’s up to you) Keep up the good work!
@@arielravid7674 I'm still not convinced "when a spell is happening" can't mean "when the character thinks a spell is happening". As for ennemies spells, there is some reasons why I don't see it as a problem. First not a lot of ennemies have this ability and most of those having it are very magic-friendly creatures or experienced mages, and therefore less susceptible to confuse a spell with a non-magic ability. Second most of player's spells are much more obviously spells, and the same goes for abilities. Third it's also the DM job to make the ennemies do errors, like that or like trying to hit a player with a spell he's resistant to. It often happens by error anyway, like in reverse "well it's not a spell man" by the player. Finally, the ennemies having slightly better abilities and spells because the DM know them AND the PC very well are part of the balance. Never forget your DM plan the fight alone. You generally plan it with 2 to 7 friends. That's why a group of PCs are almost always winners against a same level party played by the DM. As a DM, I guarantee you you can't keep up with your player's strategies and ideas. It's like playing chess against a 4 players team.
Spoilers! Finished watching all episodes and came back to see this one because of the way Lucius kills the THING with acid in shape of Qills feather and it reminded me that Lucius also took one feather of his... I just took a look at the D&D Beyond's inventory for Lucius, *he still has it*
So 2 things: 1) Quill could possibly see or talk to Sentry 2) If the nondead party members can't find something else powerful enough to revive someone they will have to chose who to resurrect. I'm scared, sad, and excited for the future of this campaign.
Indeed, you can tell when it's both the player *AND* the DM looking for any excuse that the guy really cares about giving his players the best opportunity to recover from bad circumstances.
AGrumpyPanda fully agree but homebrew+injury rules against inexperienced players (in combat) can make a tpk as a real possibility (if this is what the players and mark wants that it is up to them but I personally would like to have a chance to see the players succeed in their missions without them almost dying every single time! But I will enjoy the show no matter how they will play...
But the reaction of mark when he killed another character was not like he thought it would be this dungeon (I think he made this dungeon a little bit easier on the players to give them a rest, but they still managed to screw themselfs to the point that quill died...)
@@arielravid7674 On the subject of the injury rules and his encounter design philosophy, part of me does have to level the 'blame' (because it's not anyone's fault) at the party, both because they as players aren't super tactically minded, and their characters aren't very tactically minded either. The question is how long it's going to take their characters to snap out of daydream mode and start taking combat seriously.
@@AGrumpyPanda In game time it's only been a month since they crashed to the Lowlands and 3 days since Sentry died. Considering everything they've been through it's a wonder they are keeping it together enough to function at all.

I have never cried so much at the death of a fictional character. And my favourite one! The description of after death and all the players crying about it and the rp they did in character. I'm sobbing and have been for half an hour
We recently had a 3-week-long 'day' recently in our group, 2 heavy fighting days followed by a day in jail/court. That said we've also done 2-in-game weeks in 1 night before thanks to downtime so it evens out, I think as of session 22 (this coming Tuesday) we're at roughly 18-20 to something In-game days as well. If you're feeling that strongly as either a player or DM that the pace isn't progressing enough then it's worth bringing up either before or after the next game whilst everyone's there though buddy :) Out of curiosity are you a player in the group or the DM/GM?
D0nATr0n I’m the DM. That being said, I don’t find it a problem, I was moreso trying to make a joke of it. As long as the party’s having fun, it makes up for the speed we’re getting through the plot
Crazy Theory: Starbane is enslaving the races of the galaxy to form an army to defeat Hadar. Aila was a child soldier IN Starbane's army to defeat him. Even Crazier Theory: The reason for enslavement is so they will willing die to feed Hadar so he consumes TO MUCH, like a blackhole collapsing.
A black hole does not collapse especially if you keep adding mass to it, but they do emit Hawking radiation and have a finite lifespan, However, for most known astrophysical black holes, the time it would take to completely evaporate and disappear is far longer than the current age of the universe.
ICN Games When that scene came I had to think about KOTOR 1 and 2, (spoilers) Where Revan probably didn‘t fight his war for power but rather to unite the galaxies against the threat of the outer realms.
Albeit a year late, I wish they would remember the male voice that came out of Sentry. They could revive sentry that way and use the star on Quill. I know that these streams are sometimes multiple weeks apart, but still these things are so important.
The Calus/Hedar lore reminds me of KOTOR 1+2. Revan seems to have conquered the galaxy with the intent of uniting it to be able to face the threat of the outer realms. He made sure conquered worlds weren‘t simply destroyed, he left infrastructure and all to form a strong force that could hold up to the real Sith threat out there. Here Calus might be one who tries to strengthen the world when the gods and specifically Siaska seemed not to take the threat seriously in his view.
Mark has been really enjoying spatchcocking lippy Qillek over the past couple episodes and the one armed ,one eyed Birdie is finally lost for 'piffy' remarks....
I think Lucius is just going through the different stages of grief. Right now he's at bargaining. He's thinking analytically that he can save Sentry so he can also save Quill.
@@i5m1thy I suppose you're right. While I love the whole crew I think chris is the best at RP and I really hope to see how Lucius differs from being a comic relief character with some emotions thrown in. If you are right with the stages of grief and he decieded to RP that on the spot then Holy shit Chris you are amazing .
Counterspell: 1 reaction, which you take when you see a creature begin casting a spell. You can only use counterspell when its a spell being cast, not a feature or weapon effect, it shouldn't have cost her the spell slot or reaction since the requirements to cast were not met.
Forget any of those items, a 5gp healers kit could of saved him (a healer kit let's you stabilize a creature without having to make a medicine check, they also have 10 uses)
Rewatching after many years and I can say in hindsight, this one was on quill, and his spell slot slinging ways. The lead up to this fight is just wasted slots left right and centre😂 having watched through all of campaign 2 and being up to date on 3 there really is such a difference in the combat experience, especially Tom
We have no idea how long it would to take get to the city of glass and we don't know if it can even revive sentry P.S. Your comment could use a spoiler warning
I wonder if Hadar is the thing Starbane wanted to stop. I am now thinking that they will be the final boss. Maybe after either Starbane is defeated or convinced to stand down. Starbane didn't seem entierly unreasonable. I don't think he is evil for the sake of being evil. He seemed more like a greater good type to me
Rule out of the player handbook: Damage at 0 Hit Points. If you take any damage while you have 0 hit points, you suffer a death saving throw failure. If the damage is from a critical hit, you suffer two failures instead. If the damage equals or exceeds your hit point maximum, you suffer instant death.
Spoilers Guys, do loot Qillek's body, there's something there that should prove incredibly useful provided that you can manage to use it. Also, Qillek's dead!? And this all happened in a month!? This is extremely concerning for what lies ahead. Also, the faces that Tom and Rhiannon made while loot was being distributed, priceless!
Please put spoiler warnings as you have no idea when some one will watch this video or go through the comments looking for something like the end of the break time stamp
Use strategic tactical thinking and target the enemy at all times. But hey there were many bad rolls involved. Maybe let’s take his as a learning opportunity. Spoilers below. Sad as always and the treasure rubs it in. However as I said it’s harsh but a learning experience. A no mercy foe needs high levels of aggressive tactical thinking. Don’t risk attacks on a terrain feature when a doom monster is right in font of you. Hope his next character is more of an adventurer and tactical thinker, as I keep hoping for all of them. Tactics does NOT IMPEDE Role-play, dying due to lack of tactics does. I hope this comment isn’t too harsh just good solid advice from a fan who wants you to have even MORE fun! Best of luck too you all.
@@o.d.d.792 Great stuff. Also just basics like Target the powerful caster first and focus fire. Use ranged first then switch to melee if they approach. Also I will keep posting this all over but BARBARIANS can use BOWS! Imagine the tactical power upgrade if Aila (already a good character) started using longbows from a distance and only switching to the hammer up close as needed! Using terrain to your advantage. And if in doubt just use an attack cantrip that round against the most powerful foe. Thinking about any other ideas for next turn. For example Warlock = Eldrich blast. Sorcerer = firebolt Cleric = Sacred flame, etc. Reserving some slots for healing downed allies (if a healer) and keeping a teleport power in reserve to get someone out of dodge, etc. etc. SO happy when Oriya had a longbow.
They took a long rest before entering the dungeon and I don’t think they have been in there very long, maybe a couple hours at most. Plus I think they had concerns of the ghosts coming back since everything seemed to be controlled by the be romancer. And quill didn’t have any hit dice left so a short rest wouldn’t have done anything to help him.. But I agree I would if at least tried to taken a long rest of it was possible even if a few ghosts came back. They seemed easy enough to defeat. Plus there’s no way I enter a fight especially a boss fight with 1hp!!! At the very least quill shouldn’t have given his last hit die to cut himself for the blood to break the chains. It should of been literally anyone else. Also he should of taken the potion that nova tried to give him. 2d4+2 could possibly of given him enough health to not fall on that specific hit that knocked him down.
Spoiler, because I'm a decent person: If Quill doesn't get resurrected I think Tom should try a druid or heal subclass warlock/sorcerer I think him going for another cleric would be a little boring
@@millsada Yeah, but the party needs a dedicated healer and as far as I know Wizards don't have a healing focused subclass. Now that I think about it, a full bard would be pretty cool
@@mme.veronica735Those classes probably wont be enough with how brutal going to 0 is. They just need a straight Life Domain Cleric and they will rarely go to 0.. as long as the life cleric knows how the class works.
MAJOR SPOILERS Oh my god, the bird boyyyyyyyy. I'm dying rn. First sentry, then nightfrost, now this?! My tiny heart can't take this kind of trauma back to back, it's going to be me next I swear. Imma die of heartbreak. If they don't take him to the shepherd or wherever IMMEDIATELY I'm going to be... well just sad. Like really sad 😭😭
SPOILER ALERT! Read at your own peril! unless your finished with the video of course :) Mark, its an understatement you've done everything you can to save Quillek, you went over your duty as a DM and provided a deathsave with advantage-ish. So for that i applaud you, since your calling it so neutral but also want your party to have fun. Its years later but just in the off chance he reads it.
Spoilers So now that will has died I have a feeling that every character will die and be brought back. If this does actually happen I bet that aila will be the last one to die.
Does anyone know if Mark has released the character sheet for the Hadar woman? I would love to use this character as inspiration for a monster in my campaign. So intense and spooky!
Zonofv 1 well sorry if I can’t help vent my mind of thoughts😂, plus how’s it a spoiler if others come to the same conclusion and the actual fact hasn’t been declared by mark
A few things and I know this was years ago, but wouldn't she have needed to roll to hit quill while he was down. Also when he nat 20'd he couldn't regain health but surely he stabilized and wouldn't have had to roll death saving throws.
The nat 20 was for the injury table cause he decided to do that first. But yes, mark should've rolled to hit him thought it would be advantage cause he is prone. So that was a minor chance for quill to have been saved.

So to conclude, according to the rules mark made a mistake (maybe he will homebrew otherwise but that will give a potent advantage to enemy countepells) and just like they play with shield that the player can do it after the roll (and mark in the last campaign played like that with counterspell and shield with his villains...)
@@arielravid7674 DMs make mistakes sometimes. I'll note this for the future and let Kim know.
(this is only a suggestion that I came up with and I don’t know if it is balanced, so it’s up to you)
Keep up the good work!
I just took a look at the D&D Beyond's inventory for Lucius, *he still has it*
So 2 things:
1) Quill could possibly see or talk to Sentry
2) If the nondead party members can't find something else powerful enough to revive someone they will have to chose who to resurrect.
I'm scared, sad, and excited for the future of this campaign.
Actually Sentry has no soul in the afterlife so he can't sadly :(

Mark is a generous DM - no sarcasm at all.

To give Mark his due, he really did do ALL he could. Kudos
No Quill.. poor little, precious, tiny, loveable Quill :C

@@mrphoenix_guy4593 hunger of haddar is a powerful aoe ongoing spell that deals acid damage on the start of a creature's turn and cold damage at the end (it might be the other way around) haddar is a great old one pact maker who should be more powerful than starbane who can talk to his supporters and thus should be able to reach aerois to give warlocks his spells (he has several) and GOO warlocks their powers

Now is the time to bring back #JusticeForHazell
I have never cried so much at the death of a fictional character. And my favourite one! The description of after death and all the players crying about it and the rp they did in character. I'm sobbing and have been for half an hour
I cried when sentry died :(
Maybe I’m just messed up, but I never get emotional after a character dies. I might be broken
All of the items, seem like they were made so specifically for [REDACTED], I can even see the pained look in their eyes!
They’ve been adventuring for a full 32 day month... and it’s episode 32. I wish my dnd group could make an entire days worth of progress each session.
If you're feeling that strongly as either a player or DM that the pace isn't progressing enough then it's worth bringing up either before or after the next game whilst everyone's there though buddy :)
Out of curiosity are you a player in the group or the DM/GM?
D0nATr0n I’m the DM. That being said, I don’t find it a problem, I was moreso trying to make a joke of it. As long as the party’s having fun, it makes up for the speed we’re getting through the plot
Last year my group had a 6 month day because they insisted on methodically exploring an entire enemy castle, room by room.
The amount of times I've heard mark say 16 to hit and 19 to hit on key battles is fucking nuts
Look on the bright side: since Qillek is missing a limb, he's lighter than a normal corpse.
OH FRICK YOU!
But yes I also thought of that since Aila now has to carry two bodies...but since he's lighter Oriya or even Lucious could take him.
There's a better answer that seems to not be getting much attention here, they can find the Prime to help Sentry!
*always loot everything in the dungeon when not in life threatening combat*
Quill didn't use the barrier ring earlier like you all thought he would have still been able to use the +2 AC from it against the boss lady.
A black hole does not collapse especially if you keep adding mass to it, but they do emit Hawking radiation and have a finite lifespan, However, for most known astrophysical black holes, the time it would take to completely evaporate and disappear is far longer than the current age of the universe.
first theory isnt so crazy imo
ICN Games When that scene came I had to think about KOTOR 1 and 2, (spoilers)
Where Revan probably didn‘t fight his war for power but rather to unite the galaxies against the threat of the outer realms.
Albeit a year late, I wish they would remember the male voice that came out of Sentry. They could revive sentry that way and use the star on Quill. I know that these streams are sometimes multiple weeks apart, but still these things are so important.
I thought the same thing. There's still hope I suppose.
You're a space elf Harry!
Is it possible to be cracking up while also getting chills?
Dang, first endgame then this, rough night for feels guys
Mark has been really enjoying spatchcocking lippy Qillek over the past couple episodes and the one armed ,one eyed Birdie is finally lost for 'piffy' remarks....
So many influences in this region from the Stormlight Archives. I love it Mark!
These legendary actions are OP. In the last campaigns they were added challenges in this one they’re just player killers
You know in the back of every DM’s mind once a character is killed thinks. “Mmmm another falls to my creativity!” Lol

Break ends 1:27:30
Counterspell: 1 reaction, which you take when you see a creature begin casting a spell.
You can only use counterspell when its a spell being cast, not a feature or weapon effect, it shouldn't have cost her the spell slot or reaction since the requirements to cast were not met.
Yeah he was being bit mesn there
Another AMAZING episode. I was screaming, crying out, holding my head in my hands, laughing as I watched! So so good!
I wish I was half as good at story telling as Mark. Well done!
Yall could use a lighning rod and a big sapphire to collect the magic lighning for resurrection rituals
Damn got to give respect to mark hes a real tough dm but you can tell that it hurts him when he sees his players die.
reforge the shield into sentry's
when she is alive
I feel salty for him, but also pretty funny that those items would might of saved him.
I already spoiled myself out of this episode, but I cant wait and see his new buffs after this.

I know I'm 2 years late, but I hope they reincarnate Qill and continue searching for the Prime. I feel like that's the best shot at getting both back.
Honestly when he said "I hunger" I thought "crownrend?"but Hadar is even cooler
Hey, does a crystal that can power a whole airship work as a revive source? Or at least help? 'Cause they're still hauling one of those around.

The amount of pure rage on Aila's face after Quill died is terrifying
"I'M GONNA SAVE MY BABY BIRD IF IT MEANS I HAVE TO BURN AEROIS TO A CRISP!!" -Aila probably.
I... I’m lost for all words, that was so sad but also beautiful. I need to know how this ends
Please take the lightning javelin property to an artisan and add its power to the Howling Gale
they could take sentery to the glass city and get her revived that way and the can use the star on quill
We have no idea how long it would to take get to the city of glass and we don't know if it can even revive sentry
P.S. Your comment could use a spoiler warning
Ah-oh!!! Nova is going to cook the bird with a lighting storm. If you blow him up, he can't be resurrected.
Mm.... Fried quill..... Delicious.
Mark: "Nova, Make a wisdom/constitution saving throw to not turn into a wendigo"
Omg and now we have to friggin wait for 2 weeks !!!!! :)
This is no ordinary darkness......this is.......ADVANCED DARKNESS!!!!!!!
I wonder if Hadar is the thing Starbane wanted to stop. I am now thinking that they will be the final boss. Maybe after either Starbane is defeated or convinced to stand down. Starbane didn't seem entierly unreasonable. I don't think he is evil for the sake of being evil. He seemed more like a greater good type to me
That description of the cradle was beautiful.

@@PaulStarhaven thank you
Use strategic tactical thinking and target the enemy at all times.
"Can I roll for spiders?"
"Sure."
"6."
"No spiders."
I'm so glad that the tension for this battle is interrupted by ads for The Hustle.
Why did they not rest before they fought this lady? WHY??????
Cause they're fuckin stupid
I swear to God, because of Mark, and mark alone, High rollers is better than critical role.
