- On today's show, I have a short presentation showing you the inner workings of what a ham radio repeater is and what components are used to make one. I also go over using repeaterbook.com to find repeaters in your area to program into your radios either manually or using programming software.

I’ve watch a few of your videos and really like your approach. I’ve been in the hobby for almost a decade and can understand how new people get lost (I was new and lost once)and overwhelmed. You have a good teaching approach and are doing the hobby a great service teaching the new or interested folks. 73 KC9YFD
Hey! Welcome to the channel! I really appreciate that compliment to my effort to bring information to viewers in a simple manner for this hobby. Being fairly new myself, I am still learning and finding information that is easy to digest seems to be a challenge. I truly hope that my videos will help others and interest others into joining this great hobby. Thank you for your comment and for your support! 73!!
You put in your location and distance from your location (10 miles, 43 miles, 100 miles) you want to search. It will show you all the repeaters (2m/70cm or whatever you selected) in that area. Thanks for posting. 73 kf0alt
Absolutely! Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!
Great info my brother and trying to keep it simple not always easy to do that. Good stuff 👍
You got that right! Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching and for the comment. 73!
I'm currently studying for my Technician exam and will be taking it in Katy in a couple of months. As a noob, I really enjoy your content. Cheers from Brazos County!
Great to hear! I have some great videos on how to study if you are in need of some ideas and my website hamradiofornontechies.com has a ton of resources for new hams as well. Good luck on passing the test! I look forward to having you as a ham operator! Thanks for watching and for the comment. 73!
Great explanation for a confusing topic!
Hey Colby, glad you liked the video! I really tried to keep it simple and hopefully explained it in a way that was easy to follow. I am sure there are other ways to build one, but this one made the most sense to me. Thank you for the comment and for your support! 73!!
Congrats on nearly 1K subscribers
I will get my digital analog army to subscribe .
Thank you so much for putting this information out there! I had a vague idea how Repeaters worked, but this makes more sense to me now.
Glad it was helpful! I tried to be thorough without being overly geeky...lol..Thanks for watching and for your support! 73!!
Duplexer is friend, friend good.
love the nitty-gritty nerd stuff.
Pro tip: Find and understand your local bandplan, some repeaters are not listed online, knowing where to scan to find them is helpful.
TeamReplay for the win!
That is a great idea! 73!

Chirp also will import from Repeater Book. And it's free.
I knew about it, but couldn't pull it up to my memory when I shot the show! Thank you! I think that there are some radios though that specifically say NOT to use Chirp with because it can trash the radio. I know I have heard about it, but cannot off the top of my head name specific brands or models that would apply to. Thank you for the comment! 73!!
How do you know if repeaters are linked?
And let’s say I’m looking for 2m band repeaters for an yaesu analog HT, can I only connect to certain repeater types?
Most repeaters should be reachable. The only issue you would have is with an AllStar Repeater or Yaesu System Fusion or other DMR type repeaters. Those would require a DMR radio to connect to and are proprietary to those particular repeaters. Everything else you should be good to go. Hope this helps. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!
@@HR4NTRoger that, thank you!
How close to a repeater do you need to be for it to pick up the transmission
Depends on your area and the height and power of the repeater. Ours is about 800 feet up and reaches 90 miles in every direction. That may not be the case everywhere based on the above-mentioned criteria. I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment and for watching. 73!
Not paying to use a walkie talkie ham or not
Not sure what you mean by paying unless you are referring to getting licensed. Ham radio reaches out much further than any walkie talkie or CB and you are not limited to a handheld. There are base station setups for VHF/UHF and HF. Thanks for watching and for the comment. 73!
