    I can totally relate to the whole, not overwriting a hard drive that hasn't been used in over a decade lol. But man, it so much fun to see an old system, with UNIX installed, running on a new SSD. Haiku is a very nice distro!

    • @ex-itguy
      @ex-itguy  4 місяці тому +1

      To be honest, Haiku is so fast it hardly makes a difference to run it off an ssd haha
      I wish they had better graphics support. Especially since BeOS was great at multimedia, which just doesn't run flawlessly on Haiku because of that.

    Haiku is basically Unix. It is a very common misconception that Haiku is not a UNIX. It's debatable whether or not BeOS was a UNIX, but I think by most standards it was: the `fork()`-based process model, UNIX-style file descriptors.
    Haiku has all the bits BeOS had, of course, but it has far extended the POSIX compliance: it has mmap, but also pthreads, and /dev/ (including all the staples, like /dev/null, etc.) These aren't mere compatibility wrappers, but often the "native" APIs; some of the Be APIs are implemented on Haiku using them (while others use lower-level APIs.) There is no "POSIX compatibility layer" in the kernel, it's just natively POSIX all the way down.

    • @ex-itguy
      @ex-itguy  4 місяці тому +2

      Didn't know that. Thanks for giving a bit of extra insight!

    • @Henderson101

      BeOS wasn’t trying to be a UNIX. Haiku is trying to be BeOS, but they have added better POSIX support because it makes porting apps easier. But Haiku is a POSIX compatible OS, not a UNIX.

    • @Henderson101
      @Henderson101 4 місяці тому +6

      And by that I mean, once you leave POSIX compatibility, the API and the interfaces to the kernel are completely different.

      @@rm9sbg93zxjzg not really. All the BSDs are basically the UNIX original source, but with a lot of modification and additional work. The LINUX kernel is not a UNIX because is was written from scratch. The BeOS kernel in not a UNIX because it was written from scratch.

    At power-up, hold down SPACE or SHIFT, one of those keys should bring up a boot options menu for Haiku. Go into safe mode, and you can select a generic graphics option. That should let it boot on your Athlon 64. (Actually, it probably has already booted, it's just not displaying anything.) You can alter a config file within Haiku to run this mode automatically. As to UA-cam, I found it got close to watchable by selecting 360p quality, but not in WebPositive. This was on an older Samsung laptop with an AMD A6 APU, and Radeon 7500G graphics.

      Dat laatste is vooral jammer inderdaad. In deze tijd moeten dingen als het tonen van een UA-cam video gewoon feilloos werken en dat viel helaas erg tegen. Verder en schitterend systeem dus het is hopen op betere hardware support.

      Last time I used Haiku on my laptop with good specs it ran really slow and crashed a lot.
      Even in your video, games and videos on UA-cam looked all laggy.
      Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trying to bash Haiku. I’d like to see Haiku do better but it’s light years behind any Linux distro. It doesn’t even have a modern web browser (not yet anyway) and the project is well over 20 years old!

      @@awa0927 well I do believe that a Firefox variant just has been ported to Haiku, so that seems promising.
      I meant that the OS in general runs way faster than any modern Linux. It's booting way faster and feels way more snappy overal. Its on things that really rely on hardware acceleration that Haiku fails to impress. I really hope they can do something about that because in 2024 (or... '25) you just can't do without it.

      What distro and environment are you using?? I can’t remember any time I used a distro that wasn’t fast and snappy…
      Faster booting is nice but doesn’t really mean anything if the OS isn’t daily drivable.
      Last I checked, that Firefox version for Haiku isn’t stable nor has it been officially released. Even if it can play UA-cam we still don’t know if it can play Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.
      On top of that Haiku still lacks a lot of basic options all Linux distributions have. For example, you can’t even rotate your screen in the display settings. I don’t think you can use multiple monitors either.. the list goes on.
      Haiku needs a lot of development. Being in beta even after 20 years is ridiculous lol..
