Imagine the number of emotions people feels when a world cup start, it's unbelievable. 2022, 1.5 billions of people on earth watched it. ( minimum ) Football is emotion, is an art more than a sport.
Football is played literally in every single country in the world, but all the players want to play in one of the european top 5 league - Premier League (English), La Liga (Spanish), Bundesliga (German), Serie A (Italian) and Ligue 1 (French). This is where the best players have thier primes. There are also leagues like Netherland's Eredivisie or Portugal's Liga Nos or Brazil's Serie A - from these league a lot of young talents come from. (Other leagues also produce talents, but not on that scale, from Top 5 leagues the best Academy is La Masia - Academy of spanish FC Barcelona). United States' MLS is known for players to come to end of thier careers there almost all the time, same goes for Saudi Arabia, China, Japan or Qatar.
The difference between football and American sports like NFL or basketball is the international element. A Giants fan can have the same emotional attachment as a Barcelona fan to their team but it hits different when its your national team winning a World Cup, Copa America or European Championship or even just beating a rival country.

I don't think the major players ever thought about playing American football for money. The most recent and also the most striking example is Messi. One of the best players ever and one of the two best of the last generation. He had a very long and overpaid career and this year he left the top level. In any case, the point is that he was able to afford to refuse 1 BILLION 600 MILLION (I don't remember if it was dollars or euros but there's no difference anyway) that the Saudis had offered him. He preferred to come to play in Miami to advertise the sport in the USA and enjoy his early retirement. Certainly this is a striking example.
