Do NOT go down the route of saying Gerrard didn't get much of a chance at Villa. He was there for a year, allowed to bring in his own players and staff and apart from the first 6 weeks we were going backwards. First day of the new season he dropped Watkins, Douglas Luiz, Mings and Buendia - subsequently losing to Scott Parker's newly promoted Bournemouth. Then Emery comes in and takes the same squad (utilising those 4 as key players) from 17th to 7th in 6 months. He's dreadful and had to run to Saudi to get a job.

My pick is Lee Carsley as Caretaker Manager to cover the Nations League matches later this year. See how he goes whilst also looking at other candidates. I'm sure Lee would happily step in even though it might turn out to be temporary, as the experience would be invaluable, he would get a preview of what it's like to step up to that level, and if he wins us the Nations League (which we got relegated in under Southgate) and gets us promoted back to League A again, then he would certainly make a name for himself and make himself a top candidate for the longer term position. Promoting the U21 manager to the first team worked for Spain, maybe it will work for us. Lee also knows many if not all of the younger players and likely managed several too.

I would suspect they would learn more than meets the eye especially about the nuances of the game they may not have seen as a a player. Certainly class talent and coaching would produce just that. Maybe some great players are too big for their britches and have to get knocked down a peg or two in order to see the game as a good coach. What better way to learn that than working under Pep or Klop. And what about Graham Potter for next Eng manager?

I think they need to get someone in sooner rather than later, if Southgate’s style has been embedded into them at international level for the last 8 years, and we are now hopefully going to go for a front foot forward thinking coach, then he will need time to implement his style of play on the team as a whole, so would want them in for the next set of internationals in a couple of months time to get them working on it!

I liked Poch but I’m not sure he’ll have time to implement his style of football. It took Chelsea all season to even start to get it. Granted I think most of the England players are far better than the current Chelsea squad, but you don’t get to drill it on the training pitch week after week at international level
Tuchel was incredible as man manager and would be able to get results out of England immediately. But to be honest his style of play is still very pragmatic. It’s successful at getting teams over the line even when not the favourites, but it often isn’t that enjoyable to watch. If you want attacking football he’s probably not the right man either

How do you win games in grass routes at young age (U13 onwards)? Just bring together physically developed players, hammer everyone around and everyone loses: no player development on any side. Why do you think the Spanish players learnt to treat the ball like that? It's not about size, it's about technical quality.

@@mjcapinto sorry but if you're not managing a youth team at a top club (championship or premier league realistacally) then it literally has no relevance to the type of players coming into the top level of the game. these teams are churning out technically capable players now and are not just relying on physicality. Your point would be better made about what this demonstrates about the overall state of coaching and football understanding in England, which is a long way behind other countries.
where we are lacking at the top level is still in pairing that technical development with tactical awareness, which is still behind our overseas competitors (spain, germany, portugal) who have much better coaching set ups for longer where technical abiltiy is a given and tactical development is the critical factor in determining success.
Southgate is a product of his time tactically, he hasn't coached a league team since 2009 and hasn't had to push his tactics or develop them in an environment that has seen loads of tactical evolutions in the last 10 years, let alone 15 or so. I'm sure he's studied the game a lot, but it's not the same. Although Southgate had some success at U19/21 level I wouldn't say that there was a particular style of play that dominated or he developed a tactically advanced system, most of that work with our young players is done at different clubs. Holland as his No.2 has had more recent experience coaching in the club game, but Southgate has worked with him for so long and I think they haven't brought in enough outside influence and new ideas into the setup over his time in charge, especially I'd say in the last 3/4 years with the players who've come through in that time in much more sophisticated club systems.

    2. Pep Guardiola - Serial winner, Amazing Tactical manager, can sometimes fiddle about to much with his tactics and outhink himself but his trophy record speaks for itself. I do wonder if he can do it at a team that doesn't have vast spending power? (obviously you can't buy anyone in international football)
    3. Jurgen Klopp - Fantastic man manager, very attacking and high pressing, wants to spend more time with his grandkids so being England manager should allow him to do that.

Gareth Southgate was the first England manager to truly get the most out of black English players and to make them feel comfortable and accepted. He saw that the French were able to do this and won everything. Spain are doing the same now with Yamal and Nico Williams - Spain have never never won a Euros in such dominant fashion. He realised England needed to be a proper meritocracy and select only on merit and get rid of the bias in favour of white players. Fair play to Gareth for that, that alone got England to multiple finals and semi-finals.

I hope whoever takes over will build on the many positives of Gareth Southgate's tenure AND that the FA and government also work hard to encourage three times as many academies and coaches (to be on par with Spain) who train youngsters to play a precision passing, high-press, possession-based, creative game.
