Dinagyang began after Rev. Fr. Ambrosio Galindez, the first Filipino Rector of the Agustinian Community and Parish Priest of the San Jose Parish introduced the devotion to Santo Niño in November 1967 after observing the Ati-Atihan Festival in the province of Aklan. On 1968, a replica of the original image of the Santo Niño de Cebu was brought to Iloilo by Fr. Sulpicio Enderez of Cebu as a gift to the Parish of San Jose. The faithful, led by members of Confradia del Santo Niño de Cebu, Iloilo Chapter, worked to give the image a fitting reception starting at the Iloilo Airport and parading down the streets of Iloilo.[1] In the beginning, the observance of the feast was confined to the parish. The Confradia patterned the celebration on the Ati-atihan of Ibajay, Aklan, where natives dance in the streets, their bodies covered with soot and ashes, to simulate the Atis dancing to celebrate the sale of Panay. It was these tribal groups who were the prototype of the present festival. A participant of Dinagyang Festival In 1977, the Marcos government ordered the various regions of the Philippines to come up with festivals or celebrations that could boost tourism and development. The City of Iloilo readily identified the Iloilo Ati-atihan as its project. At the same time the local parish could no longer handle the growing challenges of the festival. Dinagyang was voted as the best Tourism Event for 2006, 2007 and 2008 by the Association of Tourism Officers in the Philippines. It is the first festival in the world to get the support of the United Nations for the promotion of the Millennium Development Goals, and cited by the Asian Development Bank as Best Practice on government, private sector & NGO cooperatives.

Currently out of the country, cant go home to iloilo. So many yearend reports to do during January. Last vacation, able to see some friends in Bacolod, stayed at L'Fisher. Ati-Atihan Ati-Atihan Festival Participant.jpg An Ati-Atihan participant Observed by Aklan Type Religious / Cultural Date Third Sunday of January The Ati-Atihan Festival is a feast held annually in January in honor of the Santo Niño (Infant Jesus), concluding on the third Sunday, in the island and town of Kalibo, Aklan in the Philippines. The name Ati-Atihan means "to be like Atis" or "make believe Ati's". Aetas, known colloquially as Ati, were the primary settlers of the islands according to history books. They too are the earliest settlers of Panay Island where the province of Aklan is located.[1] The festival consists of tribal dance, music, accompanied by indigenous costumes and weapons, and parade along the street. Christians and non-Christians observe this day with religious processions. It has inspired many other Philippine Festivals including the Sinulog Festival of Cebu and Dinagyang of Iloilo City, both adaptations of the Kalibo's Ati-Atihan Festival, and legally holds the title "The Mother of All Philippine Festivals" in spite of the other two festivals' claims of the same title. A 1200 A.D. event explains the origins of the festival. A group of 10 Malay chieftains called Datus, fleeing from the island of Borneo settled in the Philippines, and were granted settlement by the Ati people, the tribes of Panay Island. Datu Puti, Makatunaw's chief minister made a trade with the natives and bought the plains for a golden salakot, brass basins and bales of cloth. They gave a very long necklace to the wife of the Ati chieftain. Feasting and festivities followed soon after.[2] Ati-Atihan 2007.jpg Some time later, the Ati people were struggling with famine as the result of a bad harvest. They were forced to descend from their mountain village into the settlement below, to seek the generosity of the people who now lived there. The Datus obliged and gave them food. In return, the Ati danced and sang for them, grateful for the gifts they had been given.[3] The misoln was originally a pagan festival from this tribe practicing Animism, and their worshiping their anito god. Spanish missionaries gradually added a Christian meaning. Today, the Ati-Atihan is celebrated as a religious festival.

Sinulog Festival. Since the 16th century, there is great devotion to the Santo Niño in Philippine popular piety, particularly in the Visayas. Pilgrims from different parts of Cebu and the rest of the Philippines make their yearly journey to the church to take part in the procession and festival. Starting in 1980, the Cebu City government organized the Sinulog Festival and eventually gave incentives also to tribal dance groups. The first Sinulog parade was held in 1980, organized by Dávid Odilao, then Regional Director of the Ministry of Sports, and Youth Development. The parade was composed of students dressed in Moro costumes, dancing the Sinulog to the beating of drums. The idea caught and thus, under the direction of the Cebu City Mayor Florentino Solon with the help of several influential Cebuanos, Odilao turned over the Sinulog project to the Cebu City Historical Committee under Kagawad Jesus Garcia. It was the task of the Committee to conceptualize the Sinulog festival and make it into a yearly event from then on. In 1981 the following year, the concept of the Sinulog Parade was actualized involving not just Cebu but also representatives from other provinces in the Philippines . Marking its difference from another popular festival, the Ati-Atihan in Aklan, the Sinulog focuses not on the ritual itself but on the historical aspects of the dance, which, as it has been said, represents the link the country's embrace of Christian faith. 2010-2014 Peace and Order during Sinulog celebration was an issue for years. Gangs and fraternity wars were rampant during night times. The organization of AITF under the leadership of PCI Franz Georsua became the key to a peaceful and more meaningful celebration after controlling most of the street crimes during the said event.

Hey guys, can we please put an end to this stupid sibling rivalry. No need makipag-away ta sa taga-Bacolod. We share the same culture and many of us are relatives sharing common ancestry. We have so much similarities than differences. And whatever Iloilo achieves is good for the region including Bacolod. Sameway that any good developments in Bacolod will also benefit Iloilo. Let's change our mindset, suportahanay na lang ta. Now is the time to think global and refrain from being parochial.
& what i concluded of,con bak8 mas maraming panalo ang mga non-cebuano contingent is kasi dance troups ksi ang kanilang mga contingents and they had much more time to practice of atleast 3months unlike local contingents are from schools in every division, hindi nman cguro pwedeng cnulog nlng ang aatupagin ng mga estudyante.
@jenryl2914 really? walang source? naglipana kaya sa mga newspapers ang ganung title ng sinulog. Well, hindi na namin problema yun kung tinangal ang pagiging queen city title ninyo and in fact Cebu City was given another title being the first ASEAN City of Culture, baka agawin ninyo naman yun ha? hahaha! naalala ko yun pero, marami ang nagsabi na parang ati-atihan lang at boring. Sinulog-Based contingents wore filipiniana to keep the solemnity of the cause of the festival.
mm i think this one tells about the early panay aetas (ati) belief in babaylans and surwanos (pagan faith healers, herbal doctors) to heal their sickness, using herbal and traditional methods.. and then later on as they were evangelized by Catholicism pledged their faith and ways of healing to the sto nino..

Sabi nla Yan kasi boring sayaw nang sinunog😂😂😂😂 walay uniqueness kya losserness 😂😂😂

Galing galing
Hey guys, can we please put an end to this stupid sibling rivalry. No need makipag-away ta sa taga-Bacolod. We share the same culture and many of us are relatives sharing common ancestry. We have so much similarities than differences. And whatever Iloilo achieves is good for the region including Bacolod. Sameway that any good developments in Bacolod will also benefit Iloilo. Let's change our mindset, suportahanay na lang ta. Now is the time to think global and refrain from being parochial.
San lugar ba ang aliwan?
& what i concluded of,con bak8 mas maraming panalo ang mga non-cebuano contingent is kasi dance troups ksi ang kanilang mga contingents and they had much more time to practice of atleast 3months unlike local contingents are from schools in every division, hindi nman cguro pwedeng cnulog nlng ang aatupagin ng mga estudyante.
DINGAYANG 2011 naghakot ng over 2.5m expectators with 14 tribes lang.
Tama kasi queen of festival ng pilipinas ang dinagyang eh,,kaya palaging na invite ang dinagyang sa ibang bansa....
mm i think this one tells about the early panay aetas (ati) belief in babaylans and surwanos (pagan faith healers, herbal doctors) to heal their sickness, using herbal and traditional methods.. and then later on as they were evangelized by Catholicism pledged their faith and ways of healing to the sto nino..
