My local cigar shop carries this stuff. It’s pretty much the best blend for cold winter nights. Nothing beats a blanket, a book, and a pipe of this stuff.

The last time I smoked Artisan's Blend it was with Syrian Latakia and as I remember it I was overwhelmed by the impression I was smoking a leg of lamb that had been barbequed over a mixture of oak and mesquite chips. I liked it a lot.
As soon as my Tobacconist get a new batch of the revised blend in I will be trying it again.
Most recently I have been indulging in Sam Gawith's 1792 flake. Nothing like Ashton's but I like it all the same.

Interesting that they succeeded in retaining the character of the blend despite the Latakia variation. I like Artisan's blend a lot, too.
Bradley, I haven't smoked either version, but I can tell you this: Syrian and Cyprian Latakia start with two different weeds. Syrian is made from shek-el-bint, a high nicotine strain, and is smoked over fires of Syrian Oak. Cyprian Latakia starts with Smyrna leaf, which has low nicotine content, and is smoked over fires from completely different woods. Cyprian is far more versatile, but Syrian is inimitable.

One of the best latakia blends I have tried! My tin says "Latakia" so I am probably smokin the same stuff with cyprian latakia in it. For me every blend that has virginia content the several starting puffs are always that woody grassy haylike virginia overpowered evthing. Then after some time in the bowl the real taste of the blend comes. Artisans is no exeption in this. A good blend is really recognized in the second half of the bowl.

When I first started smoking a pipe about ten years ago, I enjoyed Latakia. I loved plumb pudding, HH Latakia Flake and other Latakia-forward English blends. Now... I can't stand the stuff. Even a smidge of this leaf overpowers a blend for me. A pinch is all I can stand in a blend. I feel like I've lost out on many a fine blend due to this change in my tolerance. A bummer.
Always interesting to see if another person's tasting opinion matches your own, and your take the current Artisan's Blend compared to the Artisan's Blend with Syrian Latakia matches my experience - there is very little, if any, difference. I'd have to smoke bowls "side by side" to see if I could tell which was which (if one could even set up such an experiment where all other things are equal). Artisan's Blend is one of my all-time favorites and usually included when I make up a tobacco order.
Interestingly, I'm not a great fan of Nightcap. It tastes very good to me, but, like, nothing special. Something about Artisan's Blend just works better for my taste buds. Despite having similar varieties in their make-up, they don't taste that much alike to me.
Can't even buy this in the UK at the moment :( shame as it's my favourite blend.
What'd you do to your otherwise full and healthy head of hair?

Syrian latakia is like the old Frog Morton stuff; people have propped it up since it's no longer available. When both were readily available, FM was only liked by a small segment of the smoking community. Plenty of us didn't care for it. Syrian latakia is just the same. When Cyprian latakia became more prevalent, quite a LOT of us preferred it over the often harsh Syrian variant. And when both were available, Cyprian generally got better reviews, etc. I have a single tin of Vintage Syrian left and won't miss it when it's done.
I just ordered Ashton Artisans for my first English blend. I ordered it with C&D habana daydream, C&D chenets kake, G.L. Pease union square, and mac baren HH bold kentucky.
You should open a pipe and tobacco store. I think you would do well.

Great revisit. I haven’t smoked the new iteration but I remember loving the original version but that was a long, long time ago.
