- On Simply Nitin this week, we look back at a groundbreaking event: India’s strike five years ago on a jihadi camp in Balakot, in Pakistan’s northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It was in retaliation for the attack on Feb 2019 in Pulwama J&K, on a bus carrying CRPF personnel in which 40 were killed.
A land-based operation was considered risky given that India had carried out a surgical strike by special forces earlier, and the Pakistanis would be prepared this time. An airstrike was deemed less risky and for this purpose a “package” of aircraft including Mirages and Su-30MKi fighters were mobilized. The attack was carried out with no loss of aircraft on the Indian side.
The lessons learnt are important here. For India, it was proof that there existed a window between a full conventional response and nuclear retaliation. India demonstrated its ability to strike a terrorist target with no collateral damage to civilians. The strike involved the use of precision, standoff weapons.
This is the paradigm for India, a far cry from its non-response following the attack on Parliament in Dec. 2001 by five gunmen, or the 26/11 attack in Mumbai by Pakistani gunmen.
Pakistan claimed that the Balakot strike underscored the point that India did not escalate since it was deterred by its nuclear weapons.
The Indian Air Force may have to review some of its protocols with its pilots. The downing of Wg. Cdr. Abhinandan’s MG-21 jet, his capture and the hoopla that followed could have been avoided perhaps. It did take away some of the sheen of India’s strike. Not to forget the downing of an air force helicopter in a “friendly fire” incident.
The US was neutral, working the phones in Delhi and Rawalpindi/Islamabad to ensure things didn’t get out of hand. But the view in Washington is that India and Pakistan are willing to use military force in the event of a grave provocation. The US appreciated India’s use of the words “non-military pre-emptive action” to describe the Balakot strike, a clear signal that it was not interested in escalating the matter.
No Pakistani military installation was attacked, no civilian areas were hit. Interestingly, even Pakistan, when describing its retaliatory airstrikes, said these focused on non-military targets and no civilian lives were lost.

Pakistan closed its airspace for a Month after India carried out air raids on Pakistani territory. India exhibits transparency regarding its losses, whereas Pakistan tends to keep such information concealed from the public.

Lessons India should learn:
1. Pak is willing to escalate - since they attacked a mil. inst. while we are still coy about "responding": the statement could have said it is a "response to an attack from Pak" - like how Israel does it.
2. They seem to know where our air bases are, and can reach them pretty quickly.
3. Now we have Rafales, but our aging fleet needs to be quickly decommissioned/replaced.
4. We need to improve targeting and not talk about "cloud cover" - so use NaVIC instead of GPS.
5. Prevent another "jam out" of signals and do better with networked warfare - no repeat of "Abhinandan lost contact with HQ". I donno if NaVIC can help - or AWACS positioning is needed as well. Combination is better.
6. PLEASE, PLEASE no friendly fire - come ON!!
Good signs for us:
1. We managed to surprise their air defense with the strike package.
2. Better readiness with missiles.
3. Yes, now with S-400 and Rafales.

Blue on blue was not a mistake. It was intense electronic jamming of PAF that caused it. Indian air defenses were confused and had no solution at that time. Similarly Abhinandan was also unable to communicate with his ground controller and his radar was aldo jammed. He couldn't get RWR warning and got shot down.

@@falconslayers3228general ghafoor already answered about that 2 days after 27 Feb. He said when abhinondon got shoot down he was seen landing by parachute by a nearby Pakistan army post who reported to their base that they have seen a pilot ejecting from his place.
Similarly another post of pak army which was at another altitude also saw abhinondon ejecting and they also reported to base that they have seen a pilot ejecting from an aircraft.
Now the headquarter has two info's of pilot ejecting from two different posts but it was actually the same pilot abhinondon and the same aircraft mig21. And to take narrative lead DG ispr tweeted that there are two pilots one is arrested and the other is in area. And if he had not done that, the Indian govt would have come up with a false propaganda which urine drinkers like u would still be believing till now.
So this is called fog of war piss drinker. But the moral of story is tea is fantastic 😅
@@falconslayers3228 doosra Banda was Squadron Leader Rakesh Pandey pilot of the Su 30 MKI who ejected from his jet injured. He was taken to the hospital where he tied two or three days later.

Sir can you explain about the jamming of communication signals by pakistani f-16 jets which led to compete loss of network between ground control and jets that were in air and which subsequently led to shoot down of our helicopter in friendly fire as there was no way to communicate with them. What has India done now to tackle electronic signal jammers.

One troubling question that no one is asking and replying is when Pakistan sent in their Air Force, why were they not shot down ? What is the effectiveness of our ground defences ???
Given the power and economic differential between India and Pakistan, India should have that much capability that it can given knock out punch to Pakistan at any given point of time. India has the upper hand but its not that much.
During Balakot during Pakistan retaliation , Indian Airforce found gaps in their capabilities and even Abhinanadan was also got caught.
India needs to spend more on defense . We always on defensive mode, so our preparedness always lack. China also surprised us on Ladhak.

Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar had urged in a Pakistani TV talk show of Pakistan's help to oust Narendra Modi. Pulwama attack was carried out from Pakistan when Modi Govt was in "Caretaker Mode" with Parliament dissolved pending fresh elections.
Retaliation presented near impossible task as Pakistan had fortified land border to defeat any post-Uri type surgical strike. Congress & Opposition was out with knives to exact electoral mileage. Backward caste composition of 40 dead CRPF personnel was carried out to show why they were denied safe road transport by not creating check posts. That backfired as Omer Abdullah led NC- Congress Govt. in 2012 had issued notification that no Checkpoints can be created on the roads jointly used by civilian & military vehicles.
On the eve of Karnataka election Satya Pal Malik, ex-Governor of J&K had come out with his new theory of denial of safe air transport for CRPF not knowing that road transport is the SoP for security personnel as the same vehicles are needed for various requirements of security personnel. The road convoys also demonstrate territorial control of the region.
With Balakot strike, the world supported India’s right to hit terrorist sanctuaries inside Pakistan though India called its action “non-military, pre-emptive action”. Balakot strike also ended nuclear blackmail of Pakistan that it can provide safe havens to terrorists under its nuclear umbrella. Even the US & NATO suffered enormous loss in blood & treasure due to terrorist camps by Peshawar & Quetta Shura but did not dare to hit them.
Balakot strike has another great significance as terrorist camp was located in the disputed territory of Frontier Province which was illegally incorporated into Pakistan by sham referendum in July 1947. Balakot in a way identified disputed nature of Frontier Province (KP) to the Pashtuns. Pashtuns & Baloch are now fighting to liberate their occupied lands from Punjabi Yoke.
Induction of Rafale & elimination of MiG 21 squadrons were other gains of Balakot Strike. Off course, PM Modi's Hanuman type Balakot Strike left Pakistan & its cronies with sheepish face as its intended objective backfired. Pakistan's response to Pulwama & Balakot led to abrogation of Article 370.

This is one of the worst analyses of the 2019 aerial skirmish I have heard. The aim of any analyst is to provide a balanced view. Nitin's analysis is extremely biased toward india. It is not worth anyone's time.

Pakistan drew few very important lessons. First of all, Indian Air Force specially is terribly ill prepared for a war. Secondly, every Indian aggression will be answered and if India is assuming that in case of any so-called terror attack India can attack any place in Pakistan and Pakistan will not respond than they are delusional. Pakistan will respond and hit back hard.

But I am curious, do you, at strat news, care to report the truth about how the IFF incident was because the indian airforce was caught unprepared during an ecm and jamming attack? That our communications were compromised and the the r73 and r77 did not prove effective because our jets were at a lower response altitude due to the minimal response time we had, that pakistani jets lobbed bvrs at us while we flew figure 8s blind? Why did the airforce push for the Astra right after? For the same reason, and even today you didn't call out our depleting force numbers while we struggle to even procure engines for the tejas as our neighbour's field fifth generation fighters and the share of our capital acquisition budget keeps shrinking, ntm us only inducting 36 jets in 10 years and procuring even fewer rafaels than even Egypt? Edit: compare how many fighters have been inducted in the IAF in the last 10 years with any decade before it, also compare how many fighters did China induct in the same period and how many did pakistan? Also compare how many did the decomission with respect to India. We struggle to produce the tejas mk1a don't have an engine for tedbf or mk2 and amca is a pipe dream, while China inducts literally 100s of J20s and Pakistan eyes the turkish Kaan and more recently the Chinese fc30. Are you not bothered that the IAF will soon be the most technically obsolescent airforce wrt its adversaries and have lower force proportions than at any time in its past?
