I watch a lot of Sim-related videos and I must say that you are the best. Thorough yet humble. When you don't know something you admit it and this is something I appreciate. Also, a lot of UA-camrs on their tutorial videos will focus on unimportant items where you are usually focusing on the video subject. Thank you!!
This was extremely helpful and informative. Thank you for putting this up. Keeping the little mistakes and hiccups in your video and then explaining why they happened is very useful. Thank you so much.
Very nice. I appreciate you explaining some of the details of the FMC. You answered my questions about inserting or deleting waypoints. Plus, I got the bonus of getting a lot more information that I had no idea on. Thank you!
Intersting way to program a flight plan. Usually you do it the other way around, i. e. creating the route first, than adding the SID, the STAR and the Approach. As a side effect this will also avoid many route discontinuities.
This is so cool, and atthe sametime it shows how antiquated the 737's FMC is..this could be so easy and intuitivein a graphical user interface instead of having to know all these incomprehensible quirks of the FMC..lol. Stilll awesome that it'spossible to simulate this on a home computer in such detail :)
13:23 what I've noticed with the PMDG 737 (back in the FSX days) is that if the FMC shows you multiple waypoints because somewhere else in the world there is another waypoint called 'RODOL', the FMC will put the nearest one at the top of the page as that's the most obvious choice. Also, when pressing the WPT button to show waypoints on the chart, play around with the zoom. When there's to many waypoints to display at the current zoom level it won't display any.
Did I not explain that the closest waypoint is at the top ? You're wrong about the number of waypoints - they only appear at specific zoom levels (unless part of the plan)
These are awesome tips! For someone like me who is spoiled by GA nav units like the GTN750 its functions like these that have made me intimidated to get into bigger airliners. Thank you!
Thanks Jonathan. These are exactly the questions I had. I'm slowly getting to know how to have fun in Navigating. Also thanks for your other video's about Little NavMap. I watched them while I was programming a flight and transferring it (manually) into the FMC. Thanks again for your tutorials ;-)
Many thanks for these tips....Completely different to Airbus and can be frustrating if you don't know. I'll try these out. Glad I found this now i have this aircraft on Xbox. (that's why I'm a bit late here) It's a work of art.
I was just hoping that you would include the Little Navmap portion of your planning in your recent stream that didn't have it. The more creating and finalizing/exporting of the fp and moving into the sim the better. Thx so much!!!
I just watched another video where they told that there's a reason for discontinuity between STAR and APP, that is ATC is supposed to vector you to your approach, so you are not supposed to close that gap, but thank you for showing how to do a "direct to" thingy
Well... in the real world you wouldn't program the end of the route - because the exact runway you're landing on could change. The entire approach could change.
In the PMDG tutorial, they have you program a route and near the arrival there is a leg labelled (VECTOR) instead of route discontinuity. I'm not sure how this happens. Perhaps it is a feature of the approach into KSFO (they have you use BDEGA3 STAR and MLBEC transition). This all makes sense to me because as you get close to the airport ATC is likely to vector you. But in this route and on routes I have made up, there is no (VECTOR), only a route discontinuity. In this video you just close them up. I tend to leave them in and make up some ATC vectors for that part of the route. But I don't really know what would normally happen on a flight, or whether there is a difference in how the FMC treats (VECTOR) vs. route discontinuity. What I do know is that you have given some tools here for programming in a route onto the glide slope -- I could put a waypoint some miles before the runway and specify the intercept heading, for example. Useful stuff!
When vector appears it is a gap in the plan where the pilot should take over. I.e. the SID or STAR expects human interaction at that point. You can usually remove them if flying on your own. If using ATC you might ask for vectors.
So I got a copy of the 737 FMC User's Guide by Bill Bulfer. From p28: Waypoint names in brackets are conditional waypoints "events when a condition occurs and not at a geographically fixed position... cannot be entered manually... embedded within stored procedures such as DEPARTURES and ARRIVALS". Then on p29: "When (VECTOR) is the ACTive LEG, the FMC does not automatically sequence to the next wpt. It maintains heading indefinitely. The next wpt becomes ACTive only upon EXECution of the procedure for proceeding direct to a wpt or intercepting a leg to a wpt." I guess this means, follow ATC instructions using the other nav modes and it's likely you'll at some point be told to fly direct or else will intercept the next leg. It's an interesting book, btw. Probably full of ideas for more videos like this!
Excellent and useful video. How can we add vector points also to Fenix A320? The 737 way that you described dont work on the Fenix. Another video like this also for the A320 would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Could you please make a tutorial on using vnav for both climb & descent? Approaches are also tricky for me.. Im confused on how and when to engage certain systems to land the plane. ILS is okay for me, but I struggle on understanding VOR/DME, & Rnav runways for approaches and landings
@@jonbeckett appreciate it. Your videos have helped me understand MANY things. I just look for clarity on the differences on the types of approaches & how the airplane is programmed and reacts to them
I don't think you can. You can import a route from Simbrief, but it's somewhat convoluted to do. It's easier just to program it, just as the real crew would.
Hey Jonathan! Great video as always! Never disappoint. I do have a question, Today I flew Cancun, Mexico to Houston, Texas in the PMDG 737-900. But for some reason, my plane would not bank all the way. Like I would have a different turning leg and my plane would turn a little bit, but I would have to manually turn it. If I had a hard right turn it wouldn’t go all the way. Do you have any idea what to do?
If you were flying on autopilot, I'm guessing you might have changed the turn rate? (under the heading knob there is a second knob that controls max bank angle).
Not easily (until the tablet appears in a future update). You have to access the Flight Simulator binaries directory - which requires modifying permissions in Windows - which I'm not going to do :) There are videos on UA-cam of people doing it.
Love youre videos. Qst: is it possible to just use the route planning inside the sim and calculate it on the fmc? For a easy fast flight when you dont have so much time
No - the FMC in the 737 takes no notice of the flight planning in the simulator. What you *can* do is create a flight plan in simbrief, download it, then upload it into a very specific folder about 20 levels into the filesystem, and the 737 can then load it as a company route. That said, the flight plan will not come in "complete", so you still need to know your way around the FMC to complete it.
@@jonbeckett Okei. But yesterday i choose a flight plan from ENEV to ENBO northern norway inside the sim before launch the flight. That’s not it. My LNAV would go in a straight line then the lnav would turn 90 degrees and my plane would not.
Another great video

Is there anyway to load the flightplan from simbrief without having to do a bunch of manual inputs? kinda like on the flybywire A32NX

Yes but you have to download files first using Simbrief Downloader
@@TheMicj38 you can download directly from the simbrief website after generating a flightplan.
