My girlfriend and I got a flow hive. We ordered it back in March of last year. We got it in December and just got our actual flow frames a couple weeks ago. I built my flow hive today. It came with all its parts and looks to be of a pretty good quality. This video was VERY helpful to my while assembling. I did have a few problems which I'll list here. 1. The dovetails didn't all watch up. I had to use a razor blade to shave down a few tails per board. It didn't take that long to fix. 2. No matter what I did I couldn't get the super square. I purchased clamps like the ones shown in the video, but after everything was glued and screwed it would go out of square. It doesn't seem like it is a big issue and the flow frames fit in it just fine. There is about a quarter inch gap on the side of the last flow frame and the inner wood of the side of the super. Those are my only issues. Everything thing else worked out just fine. Looking forward to seeing the flow hive in action!

Great video. I assembled mine in Australia, whilst watching the video. No issues at all with any of the pieces. No sanding required as noted in the assembly manual. Fun. Thank you. Maybe in your next video you can have a camera shot from above and zoom in more to the screws in your hands. Waiting for my bees.
Great video, thanks! Tony beat me to saying that Western Red Cedar is a softwood. But weirdly, Balsa Wood is technically a hard wood. And while I'm pointing out weird stuff, some conifers - Dawn Redwood & Swamp Cypress are deciduous....

Just got mine in the mail! Excited to put it together but this will help alot. Im glad to see in the other video that it fits on a standard super. Why use 8 frames instead of 10?
It's seven frames and they are super deep... that also helps keep the queen from laying (if you don't use the excluder) and resists the temptation for drone cells. :) it's pretty darn sweet.
No labels on my packs of screws unfortunately - this is making things difficult. Perhaps the video could lay out the packs of screws and show which ones to use

Is the glue required when assembling the brood frames? I like the idea of foundationless frames, but I'm not comfortable putting glue inside the hive. Any suggestion you may have is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

So that "classic" is 699.00 plus shipping. This is basically a starter kit which will need another deep and frames for the brood chamber, plus the cost of a package of bees of course. So in reality you can push the 900.00 + mark for one complete hive. That's about double the price of a traditional hive set up. In order to do an inspection (neccessary) of the brood chamber, you need to remove the honey super. A full deep honey super (like yours) can weigh up to 90 lbs. Is there any way to remove the individual honey flow frames from the super? Or do you have to lift the entire honey super?

We find one brood box works well in our climate, others in colder climates may choose to add another. The Flow Frames can easily be removed from the Super box to make it easier to lift for inspection of the brood box below.

Cedar isn't a hardwood. Its coniferous and therefore a softwood. Hardwoods are deciduous or leaved tree. Some coniferous woods are harder than some deciduous woods but all deciduous trees are hardwood (even balsa) and all coniferous are softwood (even spanish pine).

Our inner cover is designed with a central hole for a feeder if you need to feed your bees in lean times. Many beekeepers allow their bees bee access to the roof cavity, this allows them to build honeycomb in the roof. If you wish, you can add gauze to the hole in the inner cover so the bees cannot access the roof cavity.
Both the Cedar and the Pine hives need to be sealed. For the Cedar hive we recommend tung oil. It's easy to apply, and it's made from the nuts of a Tung tree. You will need to reapply it often if you want to keep the original lustre. In some climates the western red cedar roof and landing board will weather to a natural grey. Coat the outside of the hive. Some beekeepers paint the inside of the hive; we recommend keeping it as natural as possible for the bees on the inside of the hive. You can coat the inside of the observation window covers, as the bees don't touch these and it will reduce the wood swelling in wet weather. You can also use exterior paint or varnish on your cedar hive if you wish. Tung oil will not be enough protection for your Pine Hive. To ensure your pine hive lasts a long time in the harsh Australian weather, two good coats of quality weatherproof sealant, such as exterior house paint or varnish is a must. (You can use clear exterior varnish so you can still see the beauty of the wood grain). Make sure to only paint the outside of the hive leaving all the internal timber natural. This is important for the health and happiness of your bees. After painting allow the hive to air in the sun for a few days to reduce the fumes before housing your bees… we'd love to see some pics :) - leah

Adding glue would help your boxes last a lot longer....... Over time those screws will rust and your boxes will break apart.

I have the classic 6 and the edges will not fit together! I do not want to split the wood by forcing it. I AM SO DISAPPOINTED. I paid over $1,000 CAD to get this hive.

Our Flow Frames are available separately in sets of 3, 4, 6 and 7. These are designed to be used with existing Langstroth deep hives and can be purchased with or without a super box.
