  • This video is a road trip to my buddy's Fred. He has the 68 Mustang you see, He was originally going to put a small block Ford in it based on this E3ZM- 6015-A351 Ford Motorsports Block. It features Siamesed cylinders, splayed 4 bolt cap, on the center mains, and go I would say 4.125. He was going to put C302b heads on and the Jack Roush intake along with the Ford Motorsport Crankshaft, M-6303-B351 Ford and matching Crower Billet Con Rods. But now is going to go BBF, I told him a nice pump gas 598-600ci, pump gas motor, and run 8s with the Mustang. Thanks to Fred and his Dad for their hospitality........Well now what to do with these parts now....Build a Clevor...........Wait I need those C302b heads....Stay tuned

    Hi Tim,
That block is one I've seen before. The block is (from my understanding at the time ), what Mose Nowland, came up with to replace, the previous Aussie sourced motorsport block which was the last of the real Cleveland blocks. The Cleveland 2.75 inch mains, were a proven, and the fact that teams were running 9.2 deck height ( Cleveland ) already. Mose knew that the machining was to be done at the Windsor plant, so the change to a Windsor front format. This allowed the blocks to be rough machined on the Windsor line. Another person involved was Waddell Wilson, a former Holman Moody engine builder, and the engine builder for Cale Yarborough/ Rainier at that time. That team was making the move from GM to a Thunderbird, and Waddell had input, one being a grade of cast iron he had helped in the development of. Sadly Mr. Nowland passed away this past summer. He would have been a great interview.
Another aside, was that Ford teams that were already using the Cleveland motorsport blocks, were reluctant to use the Windsor/Cleveland block at first. Ernie Eliott used the Cleveland blocks, and preferred the Cleveland at that time 1984-85. He had blocks with more than 20 ,500 mile races in the books. Those last Clevelands must have been pretty good castings. (At least the ones that passed sonic testing.)

John cool history, thanks for sharing. Never knew Elliot used stock cleveland blocks. Be great to talk to also. I have never had a clevor but the block looks like a solid foundation for some project. I Have never heard of those guys, Wilson or nowland. Cool to get a behind the scenes synopsis John, thanks for being here

@@DragBoss351Cleveland I don't know how many stock Cleveland block were used. Though Bud Moore did use them, when he couldn't get an XE block. Bud and Mose Nowland did the engineering / along with the Aussies for the last run of the XE, SVO blocks about late 1981- early 1982. I have a Ford press release with Bud Moore and Lenoard Wood, along with the last run of SVO Cleveland block. You have an XE block. All of this went as far back as 1968-1970 time period, as NASCAR announced a small block 366 cubic inch rule for 1971. After a lot of complaining from the teams who had a lot of $$$ invested in big blocks, NASCAR came up with a restrictor plate formula for big blocks. Ford was officially out, of racing, so all the Cleveland tooling, was sent to OZ. ( Which we all know that story)
Another story, Richard Petty, was looking over the landscape, as Chrysler was in financial trouble and he knew bankruptcy was near. They had bought several Chevrolet engines from various engine builders. He said at that time that 90% of the engine development being done was on the Chevrolet. However Petty was open minded and bought a 351 Cleveland from Bud Moore. That engine made 40 hp more than the best Chevrolet they had tested ! Yes, Cleveland's make power!

@@DragBoss351Cleveland One more story Tim! Back in the 1970's John Lingenfelter swapped a Cleveland and into a Monza he was drag racing at that time. The car was fast, but with the Cleveland, it was pretty unbeatable. A friend and I saw him race, and stopped to talk because it was a Cleveland, and John was a genius, and talked to the fans. He told us that the Cleveland, he had built was more than 70 hp better than his Chevrolet engines, he built at that time. He also was victim of NHRA weight breaks, and told us "NHRA doesn't like me driving a Ford, I guess" ! They kept the penalties up until he switched back to a Chevrolet. But it does illustrate the advantage the Cleveland had at that time.

That's an old timer block, lol. That's the block Ford came up with, when the Cleveland blocks got so scarce, and the Windsor blocks couldn't take the beating that the NASCAR boys were throwing at them. Basically, Ford took a Windsor mold, and made a thick webbed, siamese bore Cleveland out of it. That way all the stuff the big boys were already running, would work in those blocks, timing belts, covers, and drive belt stuff. They had gone away from Cleveland front stuff by then, mostly. At the time, say early to mid 80s or so, this was the absolute best "stock" block for a small block Ford you could get. The deck is thicker, too. gave more strength for the head studs. Check for cracking around the cam journals and down to the main webs, IIRC, that was an area to look at. Other than that, they were an excellent block.
