      It definitely seems to me to be adjacent to Stardew Valley where The Sims is like Animal Crossing. It's a similar concept initially, but really isn't the same game (ie more leveling up and stats focused) and I think that will always be better than just creating a clone of what's already successful. While I doubt it's going to become "the new Sims" like a lot of people seem to be hoping, it will definitely end up carving out its own niche alongside the Sims' longstanding franchise

    I totally feel Kayla's concerns about the audience for paralives. I've been super excited for this game ever since it was announced and have been following its development. I would hope that the community around paralives would form not out of hate for the sims, but out of love for the life sim genre. Out of all the new life sims that have been announced, this is the one I'm most excited for by far, and as an indie game, I am already deeply impressed by what they've shown. I hope I'll be able to play in early access to see what they've come up with!

      I hope people don't just turn to the game out of hate or spite for EA. But honestly, after their broken packs they won't fix, ignoring players that need help... they kinda deserve to taste some competition. Not out of hate, but out of their love for the game. If they love the game as much as we do (or did), then they will want to keep it alive. That also means they'll have to try harder to make sure their game is not broken or gets the fixes it needs. That they don't just do money grabs anymore and actually try to deliver quality for the money they ask. That would mean that people who are now mad, would learn to enjoy sims all over again.
      I played sims since sims 1 and I still play that one! Sims 3 is my favourite... sadly, they left that game BROKEN as well. Still charging full price even though sims 4 basegame is now free. You got waaaaaay more in sims 3 DLC. Okay, build mode is amazing in sims 4 though, but customisation in sims 3 was the bomb.
      That said, I am really looking forward to Paralives in the hopes I can fall in love again with the life simulator games as I did with sims 1 and 3. Sims 4 turned into a build mode simulator for me as the gameplay got so.. uninteresting and wonky :/ If this game can force EA to do better because now they'd have serious and real competition, then perhaps I will learn to enjoy sims again too.
      I will always love the sims... 1 and 3 :')

    I don't think Paralives is going to crush the Sims into oblivion but I do believe they have the potential to be a major competition for Sims. Especially with the proclamation of free expansions and not locking stuff like weather and pets behind paywalls. As someone who plays with pets a lot in Sims. I am interested in seeing how pets work in this game. Like you Kayla, I too am very interested in this game. I am sure a lot of people are.

      Sims is so big that it would need lot to crush it, I mean lot of people still play the earlier games too and there is always people willing to chill money for Sims. However I hope that having competition, meaning Sims isn't only option will force Maxis to make better quality for their own work since its no longer given that someone wanting to play life sim picks up the Sims once there is options

      Exactly, people really want the dragon of EA slain but really I just want a shake up in Life Simulation. At this point, also, Paralives is not a purchasable game. Everyone got hyped about InZoi’s social media sweep and we haven’t heard much from them since. Everyone will be talking about Paralives today cause the news is fresh, but when (if) it drops in 2025 and IF it’s good enough to get a playerbase, then we’ll see what kind of shakeup the market has. I would love to see Life By You (if it can exist by 2025 a I don’t think June will happen), Paralives, and Sims co-exist!! And maybe Inzoi if it isn’t vaporware. I do not care about InZoi but every life sim fan having those choices in front of them is better for the genra. Paralives is the one I am most interested in actually playing.

      This is what they mentioned in the email sent to us patreon: When Paralives comes out in Early Access, we will be making frequent updates to release new features and content for free. Then, after the Early Access phase and the launch of the 1.0 version of the game, we will keep making big updates and they will always remain free.
      The reason for this decision is that, as players ourselves, we believe that purchasing a game should come with the guarantee of a fleshed out experience. We aim to make Paralives our labor of love for years to come, continuously coming up with exciting new stuff to experience in the game. As a small team without any shareholders to please, we believe the money we make from selling the game alone will be enough to support us and the development of free updates in the long run.

      Imo paid dlc should add something that isn’t intrinsic to the nature of the base game. For example, a supernatural element is not intrinsic to a life simulator. Seasons and domestic pets are intrinsic to life simulation though. The base game should include ideas that broadly apply to most human experiences. And paid dlc should be something that you could not easily expect in most real life scenarios.

    People are making very bold public assumptions and comments without understanding product and game models and economics.
    Subscription models were not the norm in gaming until large greedy companies more recently realized they could pay out shareholders and executives with huge bonuses through this method. There are hundreds of people working on a AAA title like The Sims, which requires more money without actually getting higher quality games, vs a team of ~ a dozen like Paralives that is overall cheaper to maintain. Also, some members may not stay on full time after launch, like the guy who does music and sound, because he may only need to be contracted out to work on new DLC.
    One time sales can absolutely sustain a smaller team over time, since they aren’t massively overpaying execs and shareholders. Plus, as DLCs are released, more sales happen, which replenish the available pool of cash.
    If Paralives sales taper off in the distant future, they’ll wind down releases, and will most likely already be working on the next game as a studio, or the next version of Paralives

      @Rethory 8 місяців тому +40

      They firmly believe that it has become the norm to pay for DLCs and microtransactions in today's gaming industry, and therefore fail to comprehend that players simply desire high-quality games. Numerous indie game developers have achieved success without the need for any DLCs or microtransactions, solely by offering players a comprehensive and authentic gaming experience. A life simulation game that does not require any additional payments will undoubtedly sell exceptionally well, particularly when the leading game in this genre is published by a greedy company that is widely despised for their avarice. By paying once and not having to worry about future paid content, as opposed to a game where one would have to spend over $1000 for everything, the choice seems quite obvious. I am genuinely not concerned about Paralives' financial future.

    I say this as an artist myself but the game seems a little geared towards the arts right now personality wise, which is great, but I think it could use some balance. I especially noticed this in the talents section, I think it could use more “left brained” talents, for example logic/analysis/observation skills (which could be used in careers like scientist, doctor, even arts fields like journalists and critics), handiness skills (building and fixing for careers like construction workers, plumbers and electricians), problem solving skills (for careers like doctors or lawyers), conversation skills, deduction skills. Things of that nature. A large amount of the population makes up blue collared jobs and for a life simulator I’d like to see more of those careers, skill sets and lifestyles being represented. I know we didn’t see much based on this trailer so I don’t know if those things are being added but in the talent category I would really like to see those more “left brained” analytical skill sets being represented. The game looks fantastic though and I’m really optimistic for how it will turn out!

      Also re. the art style, I adore it. I hate the direction modern games go with their art styles, I think realism looks plasticy, stale, and unimpressive. I am so excited to see a game with such a unique look and personality becoming so popular. And they did say they will allow for custom content, so for anyone who doesn’t like the art style, the ability to change appearances will be available.

      Yeah even the dialogue is linked to the para's personality. Like Anisa is serious so she gets options like saying yes without emotion to a job. Or talking about music with her composer friend. They are trying to make sure personality affects your interactions

    • @Eventide215
      @Eventide215 8 місяців тому +10

      I hope there will be some negative impacts too. Like taking that option to listen to music while at work should have a negative impact on top of gaining the musical knowledge skill. Something like because you're listening to music you get a lower chance of upgrades per day (as if your job performance is slightly worse) or your customer service is slightly worse because of it. Meanwhile though on another job like say you're a janitor somewhere, listening to music could have a good impact because you're not interacting with anyone really and helps make the job less monotonous.

    The problem with this analogy is that Stardew Valley is a passion project that was made for players, by a player. The developer made this game with the enjoyment of the players in mind.
    EA, on the other hand, only sees money. Even if the dev team of The Sims 4 has passion for their work - it is crushed by corporate expectations and greed.
    We want to see EA fall and die not because The Sims 4 is inherently bad, but because it was made by corporate, for corporate.
    People are so exited for Paralives because it marks the start of a new era, where EA will have to start fighting for the consumers and actually give a shit about us if they want to keep us - because now they have competition.
    Is it fair to put all of these expectations on Paralives? No. But it's going to happen nonetheless, whether it's fair or not.

      EA won’t fight, EA gave up on the SimCity series, litterally. And it wasn’t even really tottally because of City Skylines…they had a bad 2013 launch and just kinda abandoned the genra.
      EA makes money from games other than the Sims. If it really hits a point where they don’t think Sims is worth it, they might close up shop on it. I honestly don’t think that is going to happen tho, I think there will be a point of coexistence and there first move might be discounted packs. Paralives if it launches will have a big launch, but the real test is a month after launch when people have settled inti the game a bit.

    • @dundee6402
      @dundee6402 8 місяців тому +20

      The only problem with that statement is that EA doesn't actually give a shit about competition. They either continue their awful model of exploitation of the players, or, if the games aren't deemed profitable anymore, they close off studios and kill off franchises. This is exactly why they're one of the most hated companies.

    • @filipeeeeeeeee5615
      @filipeeeeeeeee5615 8 місяців тому +2

      Also, I think a lot of sims fans, especially older ones, were also fans of games of franchises where EA fumbled the bag and then discontinued. Closest exemple is simcity but it’s not the only one.
      Simmers who only play sims might not know, but EA is hated by gamers of all genres, and it’s been declared the worst gaming company in America for yearssss. If EA ever dissolves (it won’t) and it’s IP it’s redistributed, you would see fans from various franchises celebrating ahaha
      Edit: I don’t think paralives will end the sims or EA, what would end the sims would be sims 5 flopping, like simcity 2013 did. I hope para is enough for them to take more attention to detail in the sims 5, that kind of pressure…

    Not that it's the same style, but the "mismatched" styles reminds me of the TV show, Disenchantment - the backgrounds of that show are all beautiful, soft artful watercolor pieces, but the character styles are zany cartoons.
    But it just works.
    I think mismatched styles can really work when it's clear that it's being done intentionally (and Paralives reads very intentional in this regard).

    the best way to look at the 'competition' is to think of it like this:
    there are a bunch of fps games on the market. all have unique selling points and have drastically different systems with only some core elements being the same. but, the player base of these fps games usually overlaps too. yes, many people do have a favorite title specifically that they play. so rather than pitting the sims and paralives against each other, i think it would be more beneficial to recognize that, their cores are the same but offer different things. it is up to you to decide which games cater to you the most.

    To explain the art style thing. Those "simple" sketch looking character graphics take more production and rigging than normal 3D. So I would assume that want that style for the characters, but don't have the resources or ability to do the whole environment that way. Plus as an artistic choice, it kinda makes the characters pop, as opposed to fading into the environment. Which I find interesting 😅

    (I love Kayla Don't come for me she's my fave) HOWEVER I do feel like some of her comparisons with games promising similar stuff, like Disney dreamlight valley promising to be free, or worrying about the toxic Sims fan base turning on paralives overlooks a key thing, which is of course, corporate greed. Disney and EA are both massive corporations that have the power to promise the Moon and deliver but instead, Disney was like actually no we're going to keep making money off of this because we hate you and EA continues to release mega broken expansion packs and still has active bugs in the game from years ago with no intention of fixing them, which is why The Sims fanbase is the way it is currently. I genuinely think all this game has to do to make a giant wave is going to be be a stable game, and don't ask us for money when the last time we paid you you made our game unplayable.

They have to pay people to develop the free updates, so where will that come from? There are many games like No Man's Sky that sustent themselfs only with the sales of the game, because since the "dlc's" are always free, everytime there is one big update the sales increase, and that is enough to maintain the team. Paralives's team is only made by 11 people, is a very small amount, and you cant compare it to The Sims 4 for example because there are hundreads of people that work or worked with them, its a huge franchise, Paralives is an indie game, so that system of no paid dlc's could actually work.

      This was my thought as well. Once the game comes out, the majority of people who want it, will buy on release. That will give them a massive amount of money up front. But it won't last, and when the money runs out, what then. This leads me to believe (assuming they are telling the truth) that they are not planning to do many updates for the game. What we get on release, will be the finished product. Maybe a patch here and there to fix any bug, but that's it. Without a steady cash flow, they have no way to continue making content for the game.

I've always been skeptical about indie Sims clones because as far as I know, the scope of these games is so large that a significant amount of time and money needs to be invested for the product to even be viable. I'm actually really excited for Paralives, especially the build and buy mode and I'm looking forward to building and decorating houses more than anything. The gameplay looks really good too, however, I'm not overly keen on the look of the Parafolk. I still think the team have done an awesome job on this life sim game and I'm looking forward to its release.

    I really LOVE the artstyle. It reminds me of that experimental animation style swapping between 2D and 3D animation, like Houseki no Kuni. It's also common in Japanese animation for backgrounds to have less bold lineart than the characters, so I didn't even notice the characters don't blend with the background lmao I'm guessing that is something that would be more obvious when you're actually playing, though.

    My concern about the "no paid DLC, no paid expansions" thing is: game studios have to monetise somehow. They have bills to pay. Even if they're not EA-style Capitalist Overlords, they *have* to make money somehow, and if they don't plan a good way to do that, it will jeopardise the longevity of the game.
    So: either they're naive, they're making bad choices, or there's something they're not telling us.

    Is it just me or does the screenshot at 28:28 look like the characters match the style of the background a bit better and are less sketch-like? I agree with Kayla that I like the style of the world and the characters but they don't match very well. It's definitely not a dealbreaker for me though I'm so excited for this game!

    One thing I really, really hope they do is to include mobility aids from the beginning. I know it's probably a ton of extra animation work to add in stuff like wheelchairs and crutches, but I think that extra work would be extremely appreciated

    I'm still curious if they will have something different. Sure, it will probably be fun and I'd play for some time, but what is the spark that will make me come back and back?
    "Not the Sims" is not enough.
    My Steam has dozens of farm games, but nothing compares to Stardew, because Stardew went beyond "not harvest moon".
    I'm rooting for them but with my feet on the ground (and a giant Steam library of farm/cozy games).

    I totally agree with you, Kayla, on most points. And I believe you are not being negative at all, just realistic. I am very excited for the game and I am so much supporting small indie games. Idea and development process is cool. BUT we should not expect a full other Sims. I can share that about 3-4 years ago everyone talked about so much about it. I watched a few creators who all the time compared it to sims with words like sims could never, when honestly Paralives didn’t have even any gameplay features shown. At the end I couldn’t take it anymore. At first when I saw your video I felt like ‘oh, no, not again’ - just because I heard so much overhype for the game that I got fed up a bit. It is sad cause game looks cool and has nothing to do with that emotion. I just think it is unfair to compare it to sims, which tbh developers do them selves. Right now on build mode it gives to me house flipper vibes more. Which is a nice game, but very limited in many ways. Maybe it is just in my head. But I just expect it to be a very different and unique smaller game, which might be just lovely and incredible. But still probably a bit limited in different aspects.

    I couldn't put my finger on what has bothered me about the art style from the beginning....and then you mentioned that the babies look like stickers lol I can't unsee it now. It won't stop me from playing the game, but I wish I could remove that hard outline on the Paras. Or at least lighten it.
    I agree that one game won't replace the others, they can all have their own niche. Maybe one has the better build mode, one is more adult (please, please, us day 1 simmers need this), one is more wacky/chaotic, and one is great for modding...I'm looking forward to having options!

    Ive been a member of the patreon for 3 years... they are mega interactive and the more support they get the more staff they hire. They show us things theyve trialled and ask us what things we'd prefer. They also ask for ideas and wishes for how we'd prefer to play.
    Fingers crossed theyre able to keep it up... the main thing about the free dlc is because they want the game to be complete but rather than waiting another few years to have everything in one go theyll release it as it gets developed plus fans get to help bug test it

    While Idealistically, it's not sensible to compare the sims and paralives, It's only natural for comparisons to be made, since this is the first concrete life simulation game we have had to rival the sims franchise. I have good feelings about this game and i don't think that them being an indie game will limit the quality and the complexity of the game's mechanics in any way. The developers are clearly passionate about making a game which encapsulates all the elements that made long time simmers fall in love with the older sims games- elements that in my opinion are completely lost in the sims 4.
    While Paralives might not destroy the sims, i sure hope it makes EA wake up and realize there's finally competition - something that i hope will make them make quality games like sims 2 and 3 again- because the sims 4 ain't it

    • @chich824
      @chich824 8 місяців тому +3

      Yeh im tired of how subpar the sims 4 is .... and ea doesn't give a frick coz there's nothing else like that in the market as of now. It's infuriating. Another thing that annoys is the sims 4 fanbois that just want to hype up a game that's shallow and basic in everything other than build/buy. Personally i hope Paralives destroys the sims tbh

      I don't think the sims is going to die , lots of people like the sims 4 even though i think its an awful game. For me though, as someone who's played all the games, 4 just seems so bland and lifeless, i can't play it for more than a couple of minutes without losing interest.
      thankfully sims 2 and 3 still exist :)

    I've started playing Sims when I was 12 y.o. It means I just tried Sims 1 few times and then go directly to TS2. But the older I get, the less I focus of gameplay (TS4 is from 85 % about building houses for me because that gameplay is just not was it used to be in TS2).
    Now I'm 33 y.o. and I feel like Sims are focusing more to young players (teens or probably preteens) so that's why it's so easy to play it but Paralives makes me excited because I feel like their target group is different - I'm sure the gameplay will be more about building unique personality and it will be more complex and that's what I absolutely love because it will not get boring after few months of playing.
    25:00 I'm also not big fan of this art style of the characters. I personally prefer more realistics graphics, I wish they would make Paras differently but on the other hand, I understand it's just about me comparing it with TS4 (and even TS4 with no CC is not enough realistic for me). But... I think this style actually suits better to indie game.

    My problem with no DLC is how the devs add content in the future. I don't expect free content but I do want value for my money. I also don't want to have devs living poorly due to a non-sustaining revenue system. I would be happier with an annual DLC that is meaningful. BUT NO KITS or PACKS.

    💯 Facts. As a BitLife fan since day 1, they promised free expansions for life if you bought Boss Mode. Then, as they grew they tried to walk it back.
    And, because I love struggle, as a day 1 Cyberpunk 2077 fan I am intimately acquainted with the “over promise, under deliver” business model. Thankfully, they redeemed themselves but Paralives needs to take all the time they need and only promise what they can reasonably deliver. Especially since they’re an indie developer.

      Keep in mind: sims team is HUGE, hundreds of employees and lots of board/stockholders, major overhead costs like large office space, which all require money, plus corporate capitalistic profit-chasing. The paralives team is, what, 12 people? Pretty sure they all work from home, so no office upkeep costs, and the music and sound effect folks won't be full-time pay I imagine once most of that is completed, just contracted out as needed for updates. There are no investors to pay back, because the people "investing" are all via patreon, who expect nothing (except a hopefully great game to buy!) in return. The costs of making a AAA game vs an Indie game are vastly different, there is hope they will be able to deliver on their promises

    EA' reputation is bad. It has been for years! And they do not seem to care, in fact they seems more upset at the "ungrateful" consumer if they get annoyed spending their money on broken games or DLCs. (Arrogance and narcissistic)
    The damn droken DLC's, one by one, more and more broken, and never to be repaired.
    Cross-pack integration sloppy or at times nonexistent at all. Knowing the sims is unique as a game genre so playes are stuck with them and can't really walk away. (Blatantly lazy and lack of passion and lets add arrogance once again).
    Ignoring consumers and theirs complaints. Ignoring valid issues with gameplay. (Stone walling consumers)
    Removing negative consumer comments to make their webpages (including pages like steam) LOOK positive for new buyers and keeping existing customers in the believe they are on their own (gaslighting and distoring reality for consumers)
