Ewor Stingray part 16: Killer looking Matte clear finish

- This is the sixteenth video in the Stingray guitar building series. In this video I will be spraying a coffee burst around the edge to give the guitar an antiquish vibe then I will experiment a bit with some clear topcoats then finally spray the final matte finish clear coat for an absolut killer looking finish. (In my humble opinion ;-)

Nice of you Dave, to listen to us. We struggle with you. Shared burden is a lesser burden.
I was skeptical about the burst at first but it somehow brought the guitar alive, with the ziricote inlaid pickguard just tying it all together! Really good instincts!
The burst was a great idea. Looks really good
Aesthetically this guitar is my favourite I have watched you build so far, very tasteful indeed.
That is one sharp looking guitar. Love it!
I like it, it's looking great with that burst. I have one of those little Iwata guns, fantastic spray gun, gives a very finely atomized mist that's great for sunbursts. Next I need to save up for a full sized Iwata spray gun.
I really enjoy your videos. The way you approach the build, the way you take your audience through the procedures step by step and the command you demonstrate with your tools is impressive. Thank you, I look forward to watching and using your videos for reference. Besides being a Master craftsman your also a great teacher.
Thank you very much!
Closing in on the finish line; what a journey, and what an instrument! Appreciate your explanations of choices at each step along the way.
Thank you David I really appreciate it!
Looks great mate!! I really like the burst and the matt is very cool. Good stuff Dave 👍🏼
I would like to know who to buy those guitars where can I shop for them
It looks really good. It adds at least on video a shimmer to the wood under the sprayed area. Not too light but not dark enough to hide the grain and details under the finish. Handled it well. The wood darkened up quite a bit with the sealer applied to it.
Thanks Robert. I’m very happy on this one with the balance of all you mentioned. It doesn’t always work this well
What a uper looking guitar Dave! The grain of the Cherry! Gourgeous. It is one of my favourites, and I've seen all of your video's. Cant wait to see it finished and very curious how she sounds!
Why did you stop making videos/guitars? This one is awesome!
Not usually a fan of bursts so was skeptical but that came out fantastic! real classy
Looks amazing Dave. I like the matte finish a lot. I've heard that the matte-ing agent in the finish can cloud the final look if you use too many coats of it. So they suggest you use clear gloss for the build coats and a final coat in matte. I don't see any problems with your finish on this guitar. In fact it's beautiful. Just throwing that out there for the general good.
This whole project has been very well done. Thanks for brings us all along!
Thanks Dane that is interesting about gloss first then matte. I was worried about clouding but this seems to be ok.
Awesome awesome awesome! I’m talking notes!
Big fan of the burst! Also glad you got some of those cheaper .023” fret slotter bits. I was able to keep mine from breaking by first radiusing and profiling the fretboard, then extending the fret slotting toolpath out past the side of the fretboard. This allows the bit to plunge while just in the air, and not in the wood. I’ve heard reversing the direction when the bit is in the wood causes added stress, which can break the bits.
Yeah I think I’m going to try going all the way past the edges of the fretboard
That looks great! 🍺
I will admit I have not been following as closely on this as I would have like, but was early on. It is really looking Good will have to back track.
Lovely guitar Dave. I really like the spray color and that's a super nice paint gun. Next to a Sata the Iwata guns are some of the best you can get! Excellent brother. Peace and Love.
Peace and love brother
Looks great!
I'm diggin' it
Tamco also makes a inter coat clear. I like using candy concentrates for my dies in the same fashion as you are doing. I prefer House of Kolors but there are other brands out there that are just as good.
I use to work in a body shop years ago. In my spare time I use to paint helmets and motorcycles
Did you leave the mixture in the gun between coats or did you store it and clean the gun between coats?
I keep the mix in the gun between coats but clean it thoroughly after a round of coats. I only wait about 15 mins between coats
What pearl flakes is this? Where do i get it?
It is called easy inlay mother of pearl flakes. I purchased them on Amazon
What software do you use? I assume vcarve pro?
Actually vcarve desktop
Did you go straight on top of stained mid coat with matte or did you sandor scuff first?
The matte applied directly on top without any scuffing. This urethane allows you to re coat as long as it is within 24 hours
