The part that really grabs me in this song is after the first solo at 2:55 where they sub in a major chord for the minor chord they used in the previous verses. It changes the mood from pain to a resolving hope through nothing more than a brief, simple note change.

I have been reading this comment for the 16th time now I think, and only now I understand what you mean. In the Netherlands we have this list called the top 2000, where the 2000 best songs (through voting) are chosen and played from Christmas till New Year's Eve. This song has been in it for some time now, and is always on my list. It raises the bar!
