Patterson Hood of the Drive By Truckers talks about what he calls “perfect songs,” which couldn’t possibly be made better by changing anything about them. This is a perfect song, and the way he weaves such atmospheric sounds into lyrics so deep is actually quite spiritual. Pain and fear are so basic to being human, and the way he touches on them takes what’s often seen as negative and flips it to an expression of human connection and solidarity. This isn’t just a “perfect song.” I don’t know if you could make a more perfectly human piece of art at all.
This song is just perfect...hits just right driving in the car with no destination in mind, just open road. Also is a rare balance of nostalgic and also future facing and calling me to a time in the future when i am just chillin' with friends and family in the backyard on a perfect fall day and there is such peace even though we all have pain and experience it in physical, emotional, mental, amd spiritual ways. God bless all who read this!

Byzantium maybe it wasn’t made to last, be great full for what you got, people comes in & out of our lives all the time, I still don’t understand why some people came into my life
This thread right here, totally restores my faith in music of current times being as good, if not a little better than some songs of days gone by. I think what they have captured here is a vibe many folk needed...respect to these boys... FILL THE GAP....do it. We have two songs which seem to be TIME MACHINE numbers which could have been dragged into the modern day from decades ago.....THE CHILD by URBAN SEASCAPE.....and SAILING ON A CLOUD by STEPHEN RUSSELL....pay no heed to small amounts of plays...the future is bright for them both with no massive budget or Record Label behind them...just Joe Public's support. Maybe we should invent a new chart....TIME MACHINE NUMBERS OF TODAY.
That solo at the end is like guitar turned into the human emotion of pain; its like it is aggravated and distressed that it cant change and it works with the song so well, we start to hear small changes that only hint at attempts to make something work/change only to be caught in the same note again(pain), then it carries on over the melody which I interpret as life is always painful, however it shows the human spirit of wanting to make it work...what?.... Wow. The musicality and innovation of this band is unheard of.
It fuckin pulls at the heartstrings alright. I have no clear idea of the lyrics'meaning, no sentimental memory of the song. Yet it's been tearin me up for about a ,month now. Crazy shit
Im just gonna straight up say this song hits my heart strings and makes me bawl. Its so beautiful. I was going through kind of a crisis emotionally and when he says I wanna find what cant be found. I dont know why but it gave me a purpose. I feel like it saved my life. Idk. Just my story....just hope you all find meaning in life too....
The song is a true masterpiece, I love coming to read the comments while listening to it in the background. I am able to connect with everyone who writes, whether complimenting this great group or simply telling a story from their life, I get to feel them as if they were my own. This music opens my heart and heals it when I'm bad. I hope Adam also comes to the comment boxes of his songs because what he achieves in us is incredible, you can't aspire to much more in life. THANK YOU
I've never known a band to have so many influences and to remind people of so many other musicians.....yet still sound so completely original. Recipe for greatness that...

True, IMHO, Lost in the Dream is the best album there is, as a whole, and that will be for a long time. Maybe this one will top it, I don't know yet, but it would be nearly impossible :)
Back in 2016 I just moved to the outer banks of North Carolina. Had many nights walking along the beach. The local radio station always played lesser known artists and this song played often. Enjoyed many days listening to radio while walking at beach and songs like this played. Boy, those were simple awesome days. Now a fan of WOD..
Holy shit. I read your comment before the solo and was like "ya, that acoustic does sound nice... but huh?"... Then that solo/interlude hit. Nothing flashy, but ya. That tone.

I can't even begin to describe how much this song means to me and has quickly held such a strong meaning in my life. Everything about this song is powerful and amazing. The lyrics, the melody, the guitar rifs, vocals......honestly one of the best songs i've ever heard.
There's just something so magnificent about this song. The combination of the guitars and the vocals ringing out alongside the deep pounding drums is so otherworldly. Really is a beautiful song
I like artists who write their own lyrics, paint in unique colors, and draw from within. TWOD connects an array of emotions. This song is truly magnificent!
This is my go-to song after an episode of severe physical pain has left me weak, exhausted, and in bed. It's comforting and heartbreaking at the same time.
My baby Brother lost the war on drugs yesterday, age 38... Until we meet in Heaven, Bro Alex... Miss you more than I could ever describe. Love you so much ❤️ Rest in peace.
@@rakanal-sahli3073 Thank-you... and my deepest condolences to you and your family, as well. It astounds me how governments around the globe have not put a "wanted dead or alive" on the pharmaceutical companies that have murdered hundreds of thousands of innocent people. This is just unacceptable. I know that I'm getting involved. I called his doctor's office and gave a warning of the legal nightmare that he is about to endure. This poison called opioid medication should only be dispensed if someone is in hospital - but never otherwise. Drug trafficking should be dealt with as the Laws in Singapore state, "The penalty for drug trafficking in Singapore is death." I don't call this brutality - I call this murder. And the drug companies get off the hook by filing bankruptcy. Change must come... change WILL come. Be blessed.
The level of musicianship on this new album is incredible but much more than that the lyrics Adam delivers are poems to pain, longing and loss, never once tipping into self pity.... but wry and hopeful for better days. Genius level artistry. TWOD are America's best rock band by a country mile.
My Mum is currently in hospital for opioid dependence, addiction. Praise Jesus she is in recovery and safe. There absolutely needs to be a war on drugs... Lift those who need our love and encouragement the most.
Ty Thank-you so much. Praise Jesus Mum has recovered. It breaks my heart to say that my younger brother Alex lost the war yesterday at age 38. Today would have been his 39th birthday. Absolutely broken-hearted.
Best track on the album. Has a longing quality, a yearning search to reveal what the pain is and either how to rid ourselves of it or resign ourselves to live with it and bear it, yet forge on.

@Jessica Palmer just keep going i guess, that s what i tell myself, the beauty and the answer can and must be in the attempt, gl
And here I thought it was just me.
I am not joking, this is the best song of the past decade.. and its not even close
yep, one of
right there with you mate
Cigarette Daydreams and Sarah by Sturgill Simpson are right there with it.
I actually would give that to Under the Pressure by the same band
god that solo is pure heaven i love it so much
That solo at the end is like guitar turned into the human emotion of pain; its like it is aggravated and distressed that it cant change and it works with the song so well, we start to hear small changes that only hint at attempts to make something work/change only to be caught in the same note again(pain), then it carries on over the melody which I interpret as life is always painful, however it shows the human spirit of wanting to make it work...what?.... Wow. The musicality and innovation of this band is unheard of.
This comment is why UA-cam and social media can we so cool. Hadn’t thought about it that way. Thank you.
Amen sir
Me too. 😭
Love loves you
This song is perfect in every single way.
I listened to this song pretty much over and over again during a 3 hour road trip. It was one of the best drives I've been on
I did too from Utah to Alberta
This makes me feel like its okay that I feel miserable and that its okay that I cry, I feel like Im hugged in reassurance. Thank you
Check Gooseberries by Chekhov.
Well, the fact that you cry at beautiful things, means youre not misserable by any stretch
I mean you might feel misserable, but youre not being misserable if that makes sence
@@hrahmani5738 I'll check it out
@@elchiponr1 I think I know what you mean and thank you
The song is a true masterpiece, I love coming to read the comments while listening to it in the background. THANK YOU
Every comment section needs to be like this one! True music fans and no keyboard warriors. Those guitar solos though!
Hunter Scott 4 guitar solos...and it doesn't even feel like one bit of overkill
Right? It is a lovefest!
Hunter Scott you’ve got to love UA-cam comments. A bastion of positivity and a haven for like minded souls...unheard of elsewhere on social media
This song touches my heart in a special way.
You said it.
I've never known a band to have so many influences and to remind people of so many other musicians.....yet still sound so completely original. Recipe for greatness that...
Not just greatness. Something more important and necessary...
Pain never sounded so good.. The whole album is incredible..
If you ever get the chance to see them live, don't miss it. Life changing🤯
Saw them at Red Rocks 9/19/22 totally agree 😀🎵
my grandpa died my grandma was so lost for years until she died. Thats what i feel true love is thats what created my family. Thats what i want for myself ill make a family for a man who sacraficed his life for all of us. Thanks grandpa love you
never even heard of these guys, but as soon as the song started i was hooked. wow, now i gotta listen to rest of their catalog.
You just wait. It only gets better from here :)
Lost in the Dream is literally why I wake up every day. In reverse.
True, IMHO, Lost in the Dream is the best album there is, as a whole, and that will be for a long time. Maybe this one will top it, I don't know yet, but it would be nearly impossible :)
They finally got released on a label heard them on the radio last night and was shocked finally good music is back
jon p. Listen to the song red eyes, first song that I heard by them and I've been hooked ever sense ❤️

@@alexcabrera2932 I've just heard it, what a masterpiece!
This guitar solo is insane but 4:37 just hits you so hard. So beautiful
Ran across this song by accident. By far one of the best bands I've heard in a long time. Can't get enough of them right now
Same. It was random UA-cam surfing which brought me here. Love this song already. Gonna go explore more of their songs.
@@jadis40 have so much fun - - its all so good
try to listen to still corners - the trip or other songs the guitar is much better in still corners
The tone of the guitar❤️
Rick Krasco oh yeah!
AG is the King of Tone. Seems to feel the music - music not all about how fast your fingers move.
Browncow yup! He did a Rig Rundown a few years back; very interesting.
Rick Krasco yes I saw that it was great!
Holy shit. I read your comment before the solo and was like "ya, that acoustic does sound nice... but huh?"... Then that solo/interlude hit. Nothing flashy, but ya. That tone.
Can’t believe just three hours ago I listened to this song live in a concert by this band in Singapore. Surreal! Loved it!
Thanks for the recommendation. Loved that song!
It's been said a million times, but this War On Drugs album is going to be the album of the year.
The decade!
What a piece of art. This album will save my days.
Thank you for making the world a better place with your music
AMEN

Such a beautiful song.
I can recall the day I first saw the video. I watched it twice. ❤️🎶🎶
My fave war on drugs tune
Sure is a beautiful, well composed song with deep lyrics.
Amazing got tickets for Edinburgh can't wait
On the second place in my heart after Thinking of the place. I love it
Go to bed now I can tell
Pain is on the way out now
Look at the way the domino falls away
I know it's hard looking in
Knowing that tomorrow you'll be back again
Hang your head and let me in, I'm waiting
So long
I was staring into the light
When I saw you in the distance, I knew that you'd be mine
Am I moving back in time?
Just standing still?
I met a man with a broken back
He had a fear in his eyes that I could understand
I can't even shake the hand
Without breaking it
I've been pulling on a wire, but it just won't break
I've been turning up the dial, but I hear no sound
I resist what I cannot change
And I wanna find what can't be found
I'm aware of the time we lost
Like a demon in the doorway, waiting to be born
But I'm here all alone, just begging
Pull me close and let me hold you in
Give me the deeper understanding of who I am
Yeah, I'm moving back again, I'm waiting, yeah
I'm just pulling on a wire, but it just won't break
I've been turning up the dial, but I hear no sound
I resist what I cannot change, own it in your own way
Yeah, I wanna find what can't be found...

I can't even begin to describe how much this song means to me and has quickly held such a strong meaning in my life. Everything about this song is powerful and amazing. The lyrics, the melody, the guitar rifs, vocals......honestly one of the best songs i've ever heard.
Realy well said 😇💙🤙
Yea Sabrina, to me this song is scary yet a beautiful masterpiece.
There's just something so magnificent about this song. The combination of the guitars and the vocals ringing out alongside the deep pounding drums is so otherworldly. Really is a beautiful song

"I wanna find what can't be found." Very different. Seems about yearning and angst, like an itch you can't scratch idk
I like artists who write their own lyrics, paint in unique colors, and draw from within. TWOD connects an array of emotions. This song is truly magnificent!
My faith in music is restored. Thanks guys, you're a fantastic band.
The kind of song that inspires you to create something beautiful, whether it's a picture, a song, a memory❤
i remember playing it on loudspeakers in a university hall back in 2017, and my classmate instantly liked it and shazamed it. such a great track

I resist what I cannot change
And I wanna find what can't be found...... beautfiful lyrics !

Condolences
@@theparkerfamily7153 Many thanks, my friend. There needs to be a solution to the opioid epidemic... This affects so many, and costs so many lives.
Be blessed.
This song speaks directly to my soul.
The level of musicianship on this new album is incredible but much more than that the lyrics Adam delivers are poems to pain, longing and loss, never once tipping into self pity.... but wry and hopeful for better days. Genius level artistry. TWOD are America's best rock band by a country mile.
The instrumental part from 3:47 till the end just wow!
starting at that point is where i don't like the song anymore. but the rest, just a masterpiece!
:) Dude, that final instrumental part is just epic. And yes ofcourse the rest is great too.

Exactly, Epic, goosebumps, instrumental end part is just amazing.
Hit me like icy cold water! I love it.
Agreed.
My Mum is currently in hospital for opioid dependence, addiction. Praise Jesus she is in recovery and safe. There absolutely needs to be a war on drugs... Lift those who need our love and encouragement the most.
Sorry to hear that. I think the band name comes from Nancy Reagan's program, "a war on drugs."
Ty Thank-you so much. Praise Jesus Mum has recovered. It breaks my heart to say that my younger brother Alex lost the war yesterday at age 38. Today would have been his 39th birthday. Absolutely broken-hearted.
They was called to save the good music! This is really beautiful!
“Give me the deeper understanding of who I am”
It’s funny how the album is named after that one line
I was 23 when this song came out and I first heard it. I’m 29 now. I know I’m not that old, but it hits so much harder these days
The War on Drugs is one of the few bands today keeping rock alive with new music.
Best track on the album. Has a longing quality, a yearning search to reveal what the pain is and either how to rid ourselves of it or resign ourselves to live with it and bear it, yet forge on.
This is so beautifully true. Thank you, I really needed this. I will write it down somewhere to keep going back to.
But, album is great. This one is also very good song, 4 example

One of the few bands to paint pain in such a beautiful way with the rawness of the guitar. Beautiful.
