Patterson Hood of the Drive By Truckers talks about what he calls “perfect songs,” which couldn’t possibly be made better by changing anything about them. This is a perfect song, and the way he weaves such atmospheric sounds into lyrics so deep is actually quite spiritual. Pain and fear are so basic to being human, and the way he touches on them takes what’s often seen as negative and flips it to an expression of human connection and solidarity. This isn’t just a “perfect song.” I don’t know if you could make a more perfectly human piece of art at all.
Lost my mum to cancer a year ago. I listened to this a lot before it happened and I continue to listen to it. She lived a successful, honourable life helping others as a nurse. Nobody can avoid pain, but we can each of us do what we can to make it a bit less. This song helps.
I'm very sorry for Your loss. I lost my mum being 12. It was 42 years ago. I'm crying still as it was yesterday. But just think that way - they are in peace.
This song is just perfect...hits just right driving in the car with no destination in mind, just open road. Also is a rare balance of nostalgic and also future facing and calling me to a time in the future when i am just chillin' with friends and family in the backyard on a perfect fall day and there is such peace even though we all have pain and experience it in physical, emotional, mental, amd spiritual ways. God bless all who read this!
The solo at the end transmits what the song wants to explain, the pain, the end of a love relationship, this song makes me cry, because I'm going through that, the guitar at the beginning begins with a sad melody and then changes to a I strum loudly as with rage and anger as it happens at the end of a love affair that was special

The level of musicianship on this new album is incredible but much more than that the lyrics Adam delivers are poems to pain, longing and loss, never once tipping into self pity.... but wry and hopeful for better days. Genius level artistry. TWOD are America's best rock band by a country mile.
I'm sure this comes up from time to time with this band, but they would have been world conquering multi-multi-millionaire superstars in the 80's and 90's with this music of theirs. It is so fucking good. Music like this is life-enhancing. Feels like I should be doing cross country road trips every time I play it.
The song is a true masterpiece, I love coming to read the comments while listening to it in the background. I am able to connect with everyone who writes, whether complimenting this great group or simply telling a story from their life, I get to feel them as if they were my own. This music opens my heart and heals it when I'm bad. I hope Adam also comes to the comment boxes of his songs because what he achieves in us is incredible, you can't aspire to much more in life. THANK YOU
True, IMHO, Lost in the Dream is the best album there is, as a whole, and that will be for a long time. Maybe this one will top it, I don't know yet, but it would be nearly impossible :)
This is my go-to song after an episode of severe physical pain has left me weak, exhausted, and in bed. It's comforting and heartbreaking at the same time.
I feel like I ruined a lot of relationships that I really cared about in the past. I’ve struggled with depression and panic disorder. I’ve carried that guilt with me for a long time. This song doesn’t make it easier, but it helps me sleep at night.
Byzantium maybe it wasn’t made to last, be great full for what you got, people comes in & out of our lives all the time, I still don’t understand why some people came into my life
Its so rare when an artist transcends talent, mechanics, and technique to create something sublime. Something beyond the form. This song is one of the best examples of such a thing.
I always cry when I listen it, but when Adam Granduciel plays the solo guitar almost at the end of the song my happiness begins. It's a magical effect!!
Back in 2016 I just moved to the outer banks of North Carolina. Had many nights walking along the beach. The local radio station always played lesser known artists and this song played often. Enjoyed many days listening to radio while walking at beach and songs like this played. Boy, those were simple awesome days. Now a fan of WOD..
Best track on the album. Has a longing quality, a yearning search to reveal what the pain is and either how to rid ourselves of it or resign ourselves to live with it and bear it, yet forge on.
I have listened to this song so many times, and it still makes me cry. It is perfection. Top to bottom, every member of the band contributes so much to the music and the lyrics are just the most passionate expression I’ve ever heard. I have them as a station on my iHeartRadio, I look forward to hearing them live, because I’ve never seen them yet. So, War on Drugs Please come to Philadelphia soon. We need you, I want to see you live, and I want to hear you play this song along with so many other songs that you sing. You have made your mark and music! Thank you so much for the brilliance that you possess.
Holy shit. I read your comment before the solo and was like "ya, that acoustic does sound nice... but huh?"... Then that solo/interlude hit. Nothing flashy, but ya. That tone.
I used to listen to this song when I was 14 and I suddenly remembered it today, 6 years later-couldn’t remember anything but the first few opening notes lol but I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Spent hours looking through the liked videos on multiple UA-cam accounts to find it. Worth it. I’m not forgetting about this song again.
This thread right here, totally restores my faith in music of current times being as good, if not a little better than some songs of days gone by. I think what they have captured here is a vibe many folk needed...respect to these boys... FILL THE GAP....do it. We have two songs which seem to be TIME MACHINE numbers which could have been dragged into the modern day from decades ago.....THE CHILD by URBAN SEASCAPE.....and SAILING ON A CLOUD by STEPHEN RUSSELL....pay no heed to small amounts of plays...the future is bright for them both with no massive budget or Record Label behind them...just Joe Public's support. Maybe we should invent a new chart....TIME MACHINE NUMBERS OF TODAY.
This song has always really resonated with me. I’m 29 years old and for 5 years have dealt with an autoimmune, inflammatory arthritis in my back that causes chronic pain that will likely only get worse. I first heard this song when I had been recently diagnosed, and it really did help cope through the pain in a small way. Thank you, TWOD!
Yes, it's really hard to find any upside to dealing with chronic pain, but I've always found that music helps. I have chronic pancreatitis and sometimes just eating food can cause severe bouts of visceral pain. Nothing like sweating and literally being worn out and shaking from weakness from having to endure severe pain for hours on end. But, music definitely helps, sometimes a lot. Very thankful to have access to music such as this.
Been suffering for years with mental health holding the darkness in. I finally broke during lockdown and rang the Doc in tears. Been on meds since. Never needed help from anyone. But sometimes I guess we need a help along... Your music brings me piece and warmth. Please keep doing what you do.. love from england x
First time I heard this song, and this band, I was working as a Service Advisor in Aransas Pass,Tx. I'll never forget that day because I had a customer in front of me asking about their vehicle and I totally tuned them out as I listened with all my heart to this song.... been following this band since then and they have restored my faith in music!!!
This song just hits me and I can't explain it. I lost my Dad last week and I grew up in DE near where this video is shot. So many memories flooding back watching this, thank you for posting.
This reminds me of my parents too - they've not passed yet, but it sure does get me emotional about the thought of it. Hope you're doing well. Love from the UK.
Incredible! The War On Drugs and Adam Granduciel is something else! I can't believe how good, deep and meaningful this music is. Last two albums are masterpieces from start to finish, it is beyond my comprehension how can next one still be on this level, but I'm hoping it will be!
My baby Brother lost the war on drugs yesterday, age 38... Until we meet in Heaven, Bro Alex... Miss you more than I could ever describe. Love you so much ❤️ Rest in peace.
@@rakanal-sahli3073 Thank-you... and my deepest condolences to you and your family, as well. It astounds me how governments around the globe have not put a "wanted dead or alive" on the pharmaceutical companies that have murdered hundreds of thousands of innocent people. This is just unacceptable. I know that I'm getting involved. I called his doctor's office and gave a warning of the legal nightmare that he is about to endure. This poison called opioid medication should only be dispensed if someone is in hospital - but never otherwise. Drug trafficking should be dealt with as the Laws in Singapore state, "The penalty for drug trafficking in Singapore is death." I don't call this brutality - I call this murder. And the drug companies get off the hook by filing bankruptcy. Change must come... change WILL come. Be blessed.
Just discovered TWOD about a month ago and I can’t stop listening. There is something intangible here that I can’t put my finger on but it has me hooked. I love the intro to this song, when the drums come in at 0:20 - so crisp and up front in the mix, I love it. And then the riff, and the vocals, it’s all great. Keep making great music!
I agree. I just discovered them too myself about a month ago and I've been listening to their last 3 albums non-stop. I'm 57 and they sound so retro and derivative but somehow original all at the same time. Absolutely love them. Their new album is close to a masterpiece I reckon.

I've been pullin' on a wire, but it just won't break
I've been turnin' up the dial, but I hear no sound
I resist what I cannot change
And I wanna find what can't be found
I'm aware you're tired and lost
Like a demon in a doorway, waiting to be born
But I'm here all alone, just beggin'
Pull me close and let me hold you in
Give me the deeper understanding of who I am
Yeah, I'm going back again, I'm waiting here
I'm just pullin' on a wire, but it just won't break
I've been turnin' up a dial, but I hear no sound
I resist what I cannot change, own it in your own way
Yeah, I wanna find what can't be found
Cheers
thanks
thank you

Real Lyrics:
Go to bed now I can tell
Pain is on the way out now
Look at the way the domino falls away
I know it's hard looking in
Knowing that tomorrow you'll be back again
Hang your head and let me in, I'm waiting
So long
I was staring into the light
When I saw you in the distance, I knew that you'd be mine
Am I moving back in time?
Just standing still?
I met a man with a broken back
He had a fear in his eyes that I could understand
I can't even shake the hand
Without breaking it
I've been pulling on a wire, but it just won't break
I've been turning up the dial, but I hear no sound
I resist what I cannot change
And I wanna find what can't be found
I'm aware of the time we lost
Like a demon in the doorway, waiting to be born
But I'm here all alone, just begging

The kind of song that inspires you to create something beautiful, whether it's a picture, a song, a memory❤
Can’t believe just three hours ago I listened to this song live in a concert by this band in Singapore. Surreal! Loved it!
Thanks for the recommendation. Loved that song!
I can hear this a million times over and it will never get old... that's when you know it's great music.
The level of musicianship on this new album is incredible but much more than that the lyrics Adam delivers are poems to pain, longing and loss, never once tipping into self pity.... but wry and hopeful for better days. Genius level artistry. TWOD are America's best rock band by a country mile.
Such a beautiful song.
I can recall the day I first saw the video. I watched it twice. ❤️🎶🎶
My fave war on drugs tune
Sure is a beautiful, well composed song with deep lyrics.
Amazing got tickets for Edinburgh can't wait
On the second place in my heart after Thinking of the place. I love it
This song speaks directly to my soul.
I'm sure this comes up from time to time with this band, but they would have been world conquering multi-multi-millionaire superstars in the 80's and 90's with this music of theirs. It is so fucking good.
Music like this is life-enhancing. Feels like I should be doing cross country road trips every time I play it.
The cross country road trip vibe is real.
I second that notion.
it touches your soul. thats what great music does
Jonathan B let’s go.
Had this band on repeat during a 10 hour drive to Maine experiencing the Appalachians. Changed my life.
One of the best songs of the last 20 years
The song is a true masterpiece, I love coming to read the comments while listening to it in the background. THANK YOU
Best song pushed through any speaker in the history of mankind I freaking swear. It just doesn't get any better than this, it just doesn't get old!
"I resist what i cannot change and i wanna find what can't be found."
Awesome lyrics guys💔💔💔
I love you
They was called to save the good music! This is really beautiful!
never even heard of these guys, but as soon as the song started i was hooked. wow, now i gotta listen to rest of their catalog.
You just wait. It only gets better from here :)
Lost in the Dream is literally why I wake up every day. In reverse.
True, IMHO, Lost in the Dream is the best album there is, as a whole, and that will be for a long time. Maybe this one will top it, I don't know yet, but it would be nearly impossible :)
They finally got released on a label heard them on the radio last night and was shocked finally good music is back
jon p. Listen to the song red eyes, first song that I heard by them and I've been hooked ever sense ❤️
This is my go-to song after an episode of severe physical pain has left me weak, exhausted, and in bed. It's comforting and heartbreaking at the same time.
m.facebook.com/AllnighterEntertainment/photos/a.1818839674816426/3337558999611145/?type=3&source=48 Help our War On Drugs vote for them 🙌
I resist what I cannot change
And I wanna find what can't be found...... beautfiful lyrics !
I feel like I ruined a lot of relationships that I really cared about in the past. I’ve struggled with depression and panic disorder. I’ve carried that guilt with me for a long time. This song doesn’t make it easier, but it helps me sleep at night.
Byzantium maybe it wasn’t made to last, be great full for what you got, people comes in & out of our lives all the time, I still don’t understand why some people came into my life
Brian Campbell from Morning Kombat brought me here! Go check them out ya donks!!
Heck, we have things when we are stupid, and we lose them by the time we get wiser
@Jessica Palmer just keep going i guess, that s what i tell myself, the beauty and the answer can and must be in the attempt, gl
And here I thought it was just me.
One of the few bands to paint pain in such a beautiful way with the rawness of the guitar. Beautiful.
This is so beautifully true. Thank you, I really needed this. I will write it down somewhere to keep going back to.
But, album is great. This one is also very good song, 4 example

Wow! Wish I would have written that. Thanks.
So trivial but this has got to be one of the heart-wrenching, beautiful songs ever .... Gorgeous!
Pure magic from TWOD, again. This instantly grabs you.
After just a couple of listens it almost feels to me like hearing a long time favorite song.
The tone of the guitar❤️
Rick Krasco oh yeah!
AG is the King of Tone. Seems to feel the music - music not all about how fast your fingers move.
Browncow yup! He did a Rig Rundown a few years back; very interesting.
Rick Krasco yes I saw that it was great!
Holy shit. I read your comment before the solo and was like "ya, that acoustic does sound nice... but huh?"... Then that solo/interlude hit. Nothing flashy, but ya. That tone.
this is the most beautiful song I have ever heard in my life
The instrumental part from 3:47 till the end just wow!
starting at that point is where i don't like the song anymore. but the rest, just a masterpiece!
:) Dude, that final instrumental part is just epic. And yes ofcourse the rest is great too.
BigLebowski2000
Exactly, Epic, goosebumps, instrumental end part is just amazing.
Hit me like icy cold water! I love it.
Agreed.
The War on Drugs is one of the few bands today keeping rock alive with new music.
I am not joking, this is the best song of the past decade.. and its not even close
yep, one of
right there with you mate
Cigarette Daydreams and Sarah by Sturgill Simpson are right there with it.
I actually would give that to Under the Pressure by the same band
“I wanna find what can’t be found.”
Pete Pyeatt read it as it played !

Brian Campbell from Morning Kombat brought me here! Go check them out ya donks!!
Michael Smith No...you are.
du du du du duuu!
du du du dud udududududududu
luv that solo
This song has always really resonated with me. I’m 29 years old and for 5 years have dealt with an autoimmune, inflammatory arthritis in my back that causes chronic pain that will likely only get worse. I first heard this song when I had been recently diagnosed, and it really did help cope through the pain in a small way. Thank you, TWOD!
Hi, try grass fed beef bone broth.
@@Acarrdi Please take your pseudoscience and woo woo elsewhere.
Pain and Thinking of A Place are by far very emotive and moving pieces of music that will remain personal favorites for years to come.
3:48 When that guitar solo kicks in you can't help but smile
Been suffering for years with mental health holding the darkness in. I finally broke during lockdown and rang the Doc in tears. Been on meds since. Never needed help from anyone. But sometimes I guess we need a help along...
Your music brings me piece and warmth. Please keep doing what you do.. love from england x
This song is like an ocean in between the waves
'I resist what I cannot change'
... and I'm gonna find what can't be found.

Delta G Screw All My Friends
"I wanna find what can't be found." Very different. Seems about yearning and angst, like an itch you can't scratch idk
Been there haha. Hope you were able to fix their car
This song just hits me and I can't explain it. I lost my Dad last week and I grew up in DE near where this video is shot. So many memories flooding back watching this, thank you for posting.
This would be a great song for Bob Dillon to sing, love it!!!!!
I'm from outside Philly. It has a soul there... and this video drives it home. Old soul shit... sorry about your dad, now its a year yeah? Much love.
This reminds me of my parents too - they've not passed yet, but it sure does get me emotional about the thought of it. Hope you're doing well. Love from the UK.
@@a-aron14 Coming on 2 years. Thanks man. Oh and GO BIRDS!
@@lewisking94 It seems lame but cherish the days you have with your folks, time flies and you will regret it trust me.
This album has changed my life
indeed
Yes totally agree
This song made me look at music in a different way it's took 57years to find the perfect band slow or fast they've got it so right
@@steveroche4710 love the music
Love the music
What a singer
Incredible! The War On Drugs and Adam Granduciel is something else! I can't believe how good, deep and meaningful this music is. Last two albums are masterpieces from start to finish, it is beyond my comprehension how can next one still be on this level, but I'm hoping it will be!
Whoever had the nerve to dislike this towering tune is a lost soul. It is simply magnificent.
My baby Brother lost the war on drugs yesterday, age 38... Until we meet in Heaven, Bro Alex... Miss you more than I could ever describe. Love you so much ❤️ Rest in peace.
Condolences
@@theparkerfamily7153 Many thanks, my friend. There needs to be a solution to the opioid epidemic... This affects so many, and costs so many lives.
'am i moving back in time?'
