- Chris Perkins and @ToddKenreck talk about Red Wizards who are the would-be magical overlords of Faerûn.
Feared by the general public as evil tyrants, Red Wizards trade their magical inventions for steel, silk, and gold.
As magical artificers of great skill, they command high prices, and are not afraid to extend credit-for there are few who could survive an unpaid debt to these wizards.#dnd

Everyone asks who are the Red Wizards, but no one ever wonders how are the Red Wizards.
Why are the Red Wizards?
And where are they now!
Where did they come from, where did they go?
Why did they go?
They didn’t. A few of them are actually hiding in my basement. It’s weird not gonna lie.
"...where do you get corpses... probably not from Thay." I may have taken some psychic damage laughing at that. Well played.
You didn't mention the thing that pisses them off the most: The savage barbarians and witches of Rashemen, and their ancestor spirits, who have constantly waged war and pushed the Red Wizards back for centuries, despite being direct neighbors.
So you're telling me this 5 minute video include every bit of lore? No way!
One of the best books about Thay is the novel series The Haunted Lands. It pretty succinctly outlines how devastatingly powerful and knowledgeable Szass Tam is, as well as how incandescently practical and evil he is.
He is a master of the highest order in every school of magic, but is transcendent in the field of Necromancy. For example, he was able to project illusions of himself across an entire city, having them all operate in unique ways. This was a feat of illusion magic the Zulkir of Illusion could only guess as how he accomplished it. He was also able to cause his fiend summoning enemies to summon vampiric demons to infiltrate their ranks.
As a finishing touch, when fighting several other Zulkeirs he turns each of their schools of magic against them to add insult to injury, turning the Zulkier of Conjuration into a Mane, and transmuting the body of the Zulkeir of Transmutation into gas and liquid
I'll have to check these out. Thanks 👍
Speaking of the Red Wizards. Ed Greenwood did a book about the country of Thay that’s on the DmsGuild. It’s very enlightening
I was wondering if they’d as Ed this for the answer
He also did a video last month.
The Red Wizards have fascinated me since they starting showing up in the D&D Next material & never got their spotlight in 5e. Extremely happy they are now.
Nice BG3 reference in background with poster of Lae'zel
i saw the DnD youtube channel, Spell&Shield, talk about how the Red Wizards might be part of the Baldurs gate 3 story. A minor spoiler is...
the fact that we find a book of the dead that referances the nercomancers of Thay which let me belive they will be part of the game in some way.
4:47 "And if you're not on board with that, then you're as good as dead" Lost pun opportunity: "as good as undead" (since Szass Tam was both a necromancer and a lich) 😛
Also around 3:55 when saying that Szass Tam "shapes the future of Thay more than any other person in the realms" and could've said "he has the final Thay in things"
_That's what Thay wants you to think!_
Love the start. Hits that "Ask a stupid question get a stupid answer"
Thank you for making this video. As a long time player but someone who knows nothing about the settings, this is helpful.
Missed opportunity in the end:
"If you are not on board with it, you are as good as UNdead."
also a very nice piece of lore, Thay wasn't always like this. Around a century or two ago, Szass Tam, who at the time was just one member of the country's ruling council, managed to successfully overthrow the others in a revolution that resulted in necromancy (as he was a necromancer) becoming the primary school of Thay and the nation reaching it's current state
edit: watched the movie and *spoiler alert, scroll if you don't want spoilers* it was literally shown in there lol, that's awesome
4:36 Chris "He (Szass) has bigger ambitions. He wants to be a god. .... umm..... I mean, who doesn't!?" Todd " Yeah, yeah..." LOL
Yeah that confused me since he's supposedly a god and has been for 2,3 editions.
@@seanjohnston161 He attempted ascension but it failed
I wonder if there are a group of overpowered Red Wizards that often do battle and generally go into uber evil hijinks, called the Thuper Thayans?
Yes, the Red Wizards are evil little bastards. Unfortunately in the Tyranny of Dragons campaign they are a necessary evil. The Waterdeep War Council know the Thayan Red Wizards are a significant threat in Faerún, but also know that Tiamat is a far greater threat. It boils down to,
"Yeah we really hate them, but we can't afford to turn down allies in the potential end of the world".
You guys should make a video about Larloch, I miss that old fella 🥺
Facts, he needs more love and would be an awesome villain brought to modern dnd
If he appears in an adventure or a movie, then they'll take the time to explore such lore
Always fun to look how foreigners speak of us! Our bad reputation is our best asset on the realm and through the plans...
John Carpenter's Thay Live
Dude Chris hats are amazing why don't you sell them, I'll like a D&D hat like that but logo in white.
love chris perkins! he deserved a cameo in the new movie for sure!
He would make a good Red Wizard
@@theophrastusbombastus1359 i love his voices and his villians plans and plot twists are so good hope he Dms something like A.I at pax again. But at some other event recorded for the net.
@@FlyingAce1016 I can't always get into watching other people play, but I did enjoy the _Acquisitions Inc._ stuff (the stories I saw at least)
Thank you gentlemen
I have a character in a villian campaign for 3.5 edition that is on its way to epic level who was a red wizard necromancer that decided to leave thay and travel the world to gain the knowledge and power he wouldn't have acquired otherwise to conquer everything and return to thay.
Now I'm wondering how many historical upland peoples were conquerors. A few spring to mind _but_ I can think of more that use mountainous regions as a refuge to _escape_ conquest by others.
I get that D&D has been around for a while and so we have Red Wizard coverage in previous editions
But is there a 5e book that deals with the Red Wizards of Thay?
"Red Wizard is about to Die."
Shrine of Evil Chaos
Christ Perkins is DM Daddy
I spy Lae'zel in the background!
I'm willing to pay for having a baseball cap like that one
Does Szass Tam have any connection with Vecna?
Which would win in a Necro-off?
No. Vecna was born and taught on a different planet, Oerth, since he started in Greyhawk.
Szass Tam almost certainly knows OF Vecna but they have never interacted canonically.
And Vecna probably wins, since he is a god and has an artifact that rewinds time
Perhaps there’s a novel or six in there about a struggle between Szass Tam and Vecna? But hopefully not an alliance! Although I’d venture to guess any alliance would be fairly short-lived (ha) since what I’ve heard of both of them seems to indicate each would want to be in charge.
Midjouney
so..where does all of this Valindra fit in..? she a lich?
Thay is Colorado
Or Undead!
...and who are the Wizards of the Coast?
They aren't the Red Wizards of Thay, they're the Rad Wizards of Thay! (As long as they're the bad guys; most of them certainly aren't good people).
I had to read that a few times for it to make sense. I had to go back over it before I noticed the difference. Silly me 🤦♂️😂
Red wizards were red mages who brought Bahamut a rat tail.
Isn’t this way two early in advance?
No, the Red Wizards will almost certainly be the antagonists in the Phandalin campaign
The only wizards I'm not laughing at.😉
Why would thay do that
Yes, who are Thay?
Are they part of the OGL? 😂
I really love D&D, but I really don't care about the lore or history... which is why it is so awesome. The rules and core system created by Jeremy and team is what I am really into while others eat this lore stuff up and love to play in the worlds that Chris's team of amazing writers keep creating.
It's cool how people can get such different things out of the game.
The world of "Forgotten Realms" was created by Ed Greenwood and sold to TSR back in the 80s (I think).
He still wrote many stories and campaign guides since then. WotC have license to change things as the timeline moves on and they create new adventures - but it's all based on the stuff EG created before there was anything resembling what we now call D&D
PS. I appreciate this maybe isn't your thing but I thought I'd leave this here for any that are new to the game and want to look up some further reading
When and where is venger coming? When and where is venger coming? When and where is venger coming? When and where is venger coming? When and where is venger coming?
Around the same time as the red cloaks
Are they generally humans
?
Aren't they the Wizards of Red Mana?
The Mana of Chaos?
...
...Did I get lost somewhere on my way 'ere?
I think you're thinking of magic the gathering. In the forgettem realms most magic comes from "the weave"
@@lightwizard8593 ;P Yeah, just a joke
I'd love to have balanced Psionics in 5e. Doubt that'll ever happen but hey, I can dream.
5th like hi
Chirs perkins the only Dm better than mat mercer
Of the famous ones you mean, surely? There are an awful lot of DMs out there that you don't get to hear about
@@theophrastusbombastus1359 the ones i know, So yes the famous ones. :)
This is all just BS Lords Alliance Propaganda. Everyone else is simply jealous.
Imagine forgetting to tell the audience what red wizards are and why they're 'evil' so you drop a 5min video on UA-cam hoping no one will notice.
I mean they're basically the biggest villains in DnD, they're in all the games and at least three of the current adventures
@@ShadowmancerLord referring to the movie
@@Good_Doe yeah, which the vast majority of viewers of are going to be existing DnD fans or their families. There aren't gonna be randos going "huh I wonder what Dungeons and Dragons is?"
@Kyle I for one had no idea who/what they were until I bought the Phandalin starter set - and my only knowledge of them since has been searching online in wikis and videos like these
I'm still trying to piece it together so videos like these are appreciated by people like me
@@theophrastusbombastus1359 I mean they're in the MMO, they're in almost all the video games, Rise of Tiamat, Hoard of the Dragon Queen, Tomb of Annihilation, SCAG, and they even have like three adventures of their own
When the official channel is worse at lore videos than everyone else. This is honestly visually nice, but lazy and short.
Terrible plot 😂😂
