Presonus Multi Track Mixer Unreliable for my studio

  • Hey Guys, I've had bad issues with Presonus Multi Track Mixers. The Studio Live AR22 and the Studio Live Ar16c were both unreliable. Neither had much of a lifespan. About 15 months of service each. Presonus also doesn't stand up behind their products. I am quite disappointed with their customer service and lame response to their product problems. I just can't suggest Presonus to anyone looking to own a reliable multi-track mixing recorder. They really did not show an interest in addressing the faulty hardware they use in their product. I used a ZOOM LiveTrak L-12 to record my session today. It's been reliable for years. Please be mindful of where you spend your hard earned money. Be safe and rock on!

You can rest assured that any other recording mixer will be better and of higher quality and reliability than a PRESONUS. I can't believe that people still buy that stuff. It was an expensive, and very frustrating experience for me. I am quite certain that your experience with any other product brand will yield a better result than a Presonus mixer. peace.

Hi Tommy, I wish that my Presonus units had worked out but they did not work out for me. After spending money on two defect units it was time to move to a different manufacturer. What really boiled my blood was how the customer service people did not care about their product and used a very disrespectful tone during conversations with me, as a customer. I suppose that they are used to getting calls from many customers that are dissatisfied with the lack of quality of their product. How much money does a person have to spend to get a Presonus product that lasts longer than a year? That question may never be answered. When my Presonus products were working I loved the sound. Too bad it was short lived. Hang tough and be smart with your money. Presonus will NEVER care about their lack of quality or addressing issues with customers. rock on.

They have the nastiest customer service crew that I have ever encountered. But, I was able to go with a ZOOM product and it's been great to work with. There are many mixers out there that do a good job. Too bad the Presonus people don't have a reliable product. Oh well....life goes on. So, be well and enjoy your music. Rock on.

@jake smith I use the studio live ar8 usb and used it over 5 years it gets great recordings and still use it record with the sd card with lots of volume and clean sound the daw software is complicated so I use a different program . The recording problems people are getting is in the software not the hardware switch to a different DAW to much latency in studio one artist depending on the computers processor and ram using a terabyte ssd with 16 gigs of ram and i5 processor the mixer has been very impressive. If you use studio one tweaking specific settings in the software will correct the problems. Low end laptops are not good for high-quality recordings.

Just about any other brand will make you happy. Yamaha, ZOOM, Tascam, Behringer, Mackie and others. I should have recorded the conversation that I had with Presonus customer service. They're so bad that you feel sick after talking to them. Good luck with your music and I can tell you right now that your 2024 will be much happier without getting ripped off by Presonus. 👎

I bought studiolive 24R rack mount mixer as a band rehearsal mixer just for in ear monitors during band practice. I even did a 1 hour review of what I liked and disliked about it on my UA-cam channel whenI first purchased it. But overtime I have learned to stay away from Presonus hardware products. I had been using Presonus audio interfaces in my studio. I bought a pair of the quantum 4848 thunderbolt interfaces to use with my studios 56 channel Soundcraft MH-2 analog console around the same time as the Presonus mixer. First the 4848’s clock failed after 2 months so I had to pay $400 to have it repaired then the Studiolive 24R’s line outputs began to fail after 9 months and I baby my equipment and treat it better than I treat a car. But I have had a terrible experience with Presonus products and I now have to spend more money to replace all of it. The products were such terrible experience that I wouldn’t even sell them to someone, or even give them away because I don’t want someone to say I sold or gave them faulty equipment. I replaced the quantum interfaces with a pair of Antelope Audio Orion 32, and I’m searching for a new digital mixer for band rehearsals with at least 12 monitor outputs so a 6 person band I’m in can have 6 stereo in ear mixes. I guess I’ll be trying an Allen & heath console next so let’s hope it’s a better experience! Thanks for making this video and giving your honest experience.

I ran into a similar issue, bought a dead AR16c pretty cheap and in was in great physical condition. in my case it actually started up but the power supply made a weird higher pitched variable noise. Presonus would only send me to one of their repair shops and would not sell me a power supply. I load tested the power supply and it wasn't performing any regulation, as you loaded it, voltages would just drop. I checked everything in the power supply as it's a pretty simple design and ended up replacing the main flyback controller chip. worked perfect after that. One thing to note is that this power supply has a pretty small main rectifier cap and a surge can spike pretty quick and take out the flyback chip. A good surge protector will definitely help a lot on these units.

If only I could say the same for the L20 I would be laughing, thanks again ever so much for all you advice and knowledgeable input on the right mixing desk,

Hello again my Brother! Remember to keep your own goals in mind. As for the effects, I like what I hear. The reverbs and delays are just right for live performance. My band usually plays in a terrible acoustic environment in Detroit. hahha. Seems like every venue is built in a tunnel. haha. So, I try to keep the reverb at a low level. Changing efx levels on the fly is easy but usually you don't have to make too many adjustments during a show. I have the ZOOM H4N too. It's great when I'm doing a quick band video at a bar. The camera mics are not so good on my small personal cameras. it's great to throw a H4N on a short stand and record the audio separately. Big difference.
My Detroit band records our rehearsals so that things move along a lot faster. Here's a recording that I did in my 'BAT CAVE' using the ZOOM L-20. ua-cam.com/video/eCOGCtDu-3U/v-deo.html NO OVERDUBS. All the mistakes stay in. hahaha. I use a little reverb on the vocals in post but there's nothing fancy going on. ha. ONCE again, take your time, take a deep breath and be logical. ROCK ON.

Could not agree with you more about Presonus customer 'care'! My Audiobox USB96 died after less than three months, and they made me jump through hoops before saying "take it back to the store you bought it from and they will send it to us to look at", even after I had sent them a video of all the issues that they asked for!
Plus, I'm in Glasgow, Scotland, so I had to take it to the store,, for them to send it to the US, even when Presonus knew the issue, rather than just doing it direct, or allowing me to collect a replacement. Needless to say, won't be using their hardware again! (Software is great!)

totally agree about the customer service. extremely flakey. I had good luck with their old firewire interfaces, so I bought some of their powered monitors. have had good luck with them. so i got a AR8, and then an AR12c. I have had good luck with them so far, and reading some comments here about using a surge protector caught my attention. I have them plugged into a power strip, turn them on that way. On the mac I am able to aggregate both into a 22ch interface, i am working out a few bugs but over all its been pretty nice. I do understand your pain, and if this mixer craps out in 12 months I wont go back, the AR8 has been working for 8 years however, so sometimes you luck out and sometimes you get garbage. quality control may be lacking. thanks for the video.

Hi Jake, first off I have to say I love your guitar playing, reason I'm contacting you is in relation to as you said yourself here, research the Presonus Ar16c desk before buying,
I have ordered one from Thomann in Germany, just arrived today Monday 16th Jan 23, but now I'm seriously thinking of sending it back to Thomann after watching your video, and what even surprised me even more was to see it actually left up on Sweetwater sale site, trying to sell their Ar16c presonus desk, this is mind boggling they did not take your video down, cause if anyone is to be believed, its you my friend and my heart goes out to you, me in general I'm a totally honest person and would hate to wrong anyone, it's plainly obvious this company do not give a dam or even care, the like of Joe Guilder coming on and doing a big sales pitch for Presonus, how they upgraded the mic Pre amps and how great this mixer is and all it can do, and yet you get 2, and they last just over 12 months and not even an explanation, or we are sorry, here is a new one,
Would you believe it when I tell you to this very day from previous analogue desks I owned, I keep opening up the flightcase and setting up my Dynacord CMS 1000 MK 1 desk, love everything about it
ease of use warm sound, even had my 4 piece band of 13 years going through this desk and now today I'm a 1 man band and dj and still this desk rocks!! what in your opinion would you reccomend In a desk to beat the Dynacord Cms of 15 years, cause the new Mackie 16fx V3 did not do it, I sold that on, and now looks like I'll be returning the presonus Ar16c too, 30 days to return, or I suppose like a few of my mates told me recently, analogue old tech, go digital, not just yet, I was thinking of the Allen and Heath 16Fx 🤔
or Tascam, have to have a brilliant sound and super effects, please don't say Yamaha, or will I try out this presonus Ar16c and light up the world wide Web if it fails to deliver like it has on you,
bad bad form on Personus not to stand over their products, sorry for rambling on, but I'm not going to be made a fool of, if this desk is not to be trusted well then back it goes, so to finish after all that what is your view, I would be very anxious to read, thanks in advance,

Hello Martin P. Well, I have to say that the Presonus mixers cost a lot of money and turned out to be a very bad choice. They just don't care about the customer or their quality. I can not say if your results will be bad or good but in my opinion they are one of the worst products out there when it comes to quality. So many other products out there. None of them are bad like Presonus. I think that using things that have worked in the past is also a good idea. Why not. Sweetwater is a good place to get stuff. Hmmm..... they left the review up. Interesting. They probably get a lot of complaints about the Presonus products. They are still a business and they are going to ship the stuff that the customers orders. I have no idea what kind of nightmares the Presonus mixers bring but I'm sure that Sweetwater would rather have better quality from Presonus. Unfortunately, it will never happen. In the meantime, please move forward and don't let anything get in the path of your own quality and happiness. It's YOUR MONEY and you make the choices for yourself. As for me, PRESONUS will never see another dollar/euro from me! peace and happiness to you Martin. Have a great musical 2023!

It's great Jake that your warning everyone against Presonus products, I have read your replies here and you have not just answered in 2 or 3 words, I honestly think it's an absolute disgrace against presonus that you have not been sorted especially after 2 disasters, I know I'm another fish on their line of customers
      Buying into their products,
to be totally honest it was the video clip Joe Guilder was explaining as I said to you about the upgrading of the mic Pre amps, and the fact you can drop in an SD and record your entire gig, but then the more I researched on this Ar16c desk the horror stories begin to appear, then yes I checked sweetwater and see your review and video,
It's a minefield really to be honest on what desk to put your trust in, my god Jake honestly with the desks I have bought up to now and returned putting my Dynacord CMS into storage as a back up I end up taking it back out on the road, the only other desk I have heard live any way close to my Dynacord is the Allen and Heath Zed14fx, but no graphic EQ , but still a great sounding desk, but I would definitely have to go with Zed16fx, going digital it's a whole new learning curve, and just as one mate said to me it's the same as going for a new car with all modernised on board electronics and giving nothing but trouble, or an older 5 year old car and giving no trouble whatsoever, the same with desks modernised desks cramping in everything and cheap components cutting corners every which way keeping costs down then selling onto us artists and musicians preeching the marketing hype and if one goes down tough luck bye bye we got your money you bought our product and we are not interested should you have any issues, how in Gods name can a company survive like this, did I read somewhere presonus gives a 2 year guarantee 🤔 I honestly don't know Jake at this stage I don't think I'll even open the box when I return home, and from reading all you had to say and every other negative review on the Web, I think if anyone has the 30 day return policy, start returning now and maybe then presonus might play a fair game and be honest and genuine to their customers and fully stand over their products even if we had to pay a bit more for reliability, I honestly think profit margins would rise handsomely, right now whoever this jackass final say on how the company should operate, better wake up and try win back the trust in presonus products especially their mixing desks, or the ship will sink fast, just like the Titanic, Jake thanks again for your fast reply, I will take your very much appreciated advice and return my the presonus Ar16c desk and I hope others will follow suit, anyway I wish you and family a very very happy new year and may every great wish come your way 2023, sorry again for rambling on, but I will definitely return with an update, I'm away for a few days right now and my package is waiting in my studio on my return and it's going back!! and possibly put in for the Allen and Heath Zed16fx, will it be used as a back up, or my main desk, that remains to be seen, all the best for now, Jake you'll say thanks be to God he's finished 🙏

Hello Lucas Kaufmann, thank you for the shout out. Yeah, I do love guitars of all types. I just can't afford my own personal tastes. hahaha. Well, getting into guitar is quite an event and it can also be very rewarding to the mind and soul. As for me, I got into guitar back when I was in junior high school at age 17. First, One of my pals purchased a garage sale special for $5. hahaha. It was a beat up Harmony Stella guitar. After he started playing I noticed that he was becoming a popular guy at school. So....I saved money from my summer job and purchased a terrible guitar for $30. hahaha. It was so bad that it didn't even have a name on it but it was enough to get me started. Of course, after a few months I was getting to be a little popular at school too. But the big flame of stardom came after I went electric. A drummer friend of mine recruited me to play at a school assembly in front of the student body. It was my first real performance. I played 3 chords for 5 minutes while my pal beat out the loudest drum chops within his soul. The students went wild and we were the talk of the school for .....maybe 3 days. hahaha. As for being stuck, well, you are never stuck. Every time you pick up your axe a different thing happens. It's not always apparent but it will show up in your playing in the future. I think that playing with others is a big factor in progress. Especially if you can do it on a regular basis. My first jams were horrible but I was determined to stick with it. Music is too much fun so, play often. The most important thing isn't whether you play a wrong note.....the most important thing is to PLAY WITH PASSION! peace be with you my friend!

Thanks Jake, for this precious info.
Surprizing, because I thought those Presonus were good.
My aim is to have more than the 2 inputs to my Steinberg UR22mkII audio interface.
I ended up buying a couple a very cheap mixers; i have two Moukeys 8 inputs and 6 inputs, each for about $35,
    and it's not bad.
    What do you think ?
I am still thinking about a multi input interface which brings me to those hybrid mixer / interface and that Studiolive was on my list , versus Behringer Xenyx X2442 or QX2442...I don't understand the difference.
I have two friends who both use a Zoom L-20 and are very happy with it, but it's more expensive even if not crazy expensive.
Do you think my couple of Moukeys + Steinberg audio interface is a bad combination?
I need to comfess i m not at all a great musician I play for fun.
    I think I have 3 options:
    1/ keep my cheap Moukeys,
    2/ideally get a Zoom L20
    3/or must cheaper Behringer 2442
4/ simply two Behringer U-PHORIA UMC1820 in order to get 16 inputs
    Any advice ?

Hello my friend. First I want to congratulate you for not getting duped into a Presonus purchase. 🤠 As for audio mixers with built in interfaces, there are many. Everything that you listed in your note is good. I have the ZOOM stuff. Another thing I have to say is that you did well to purchase something that's affordable. If it works keep using it until you really have a need to slam a bunch of sound into better preamps. (OR WIN THE LOTTO) 🤩 No one is going to call you out for not having an overpriced unit that breaks your budget. There is always going to be a new flavor of gadget on the market. Keep your eyes open for some used stuff too. As long as it's not Presonus you'll be fine with picking up a good unit from a person that's updating their personal studio. Another thing I would like to point out is that you've already surpassed the technology the Beatles had when they recorded Sgt Peppers. hahaha. I suppose that gets around to being a good song writer. As for musicianship, it's a subjective matter. Steve Vai is fantastic. He's one of my favorites. John Lee Hooker was fantastic too, but in a different way. Work on your song writng skills. Use your gear to capture your creativity. Keep using the gear that you've got. These are tools. When there's a financial bump upward in your budget you can acquire new stuff. In the meantime, stay focused on your music and have fun with it. Your musical ability isn't the issue. the gear isn't the issue. the issue is to PLAY WITH PASSION!! peace.

Hello Jake, Thanks a lot for your nice and wise advise and this very detailed and useful explanation.
And I agree I have already more than enough to have fun making music.
I listened to absolutely any kind of music from baroque classic to old time reggae, or atmospheric music.
First vinyls my dad got for me when I was a teenager were Abbey Road, Tarkus and Santana I, then I discovered Jazz.
Thank you again for your answer, I appreciate.
I would add, it's more attractive to put your hands on a new synth than on a new interface...but it's still "GAS"
      Happy New Year !

As for suggestions on mixers....I have to say that anything other than a Presonus product will work. I ended up with a ZOOM L-20 but I do like the Mackie stuff that's coming out these days. Mackie has an ONYX series multi track that might be worth looking into. In any case, you will do well if you don't buy a Presonus. They are not very nice people to talk on the phone with either. yuk.... Be safe and rock solid my friend.

I'm very sorry for your issues, but after 30 years of pro experience in music, I had the time to try so many gears… I don't know about your specific products with embedded recordings, but I had various Presonus products, and they work just fine. I had studio live 64s and before that cs18 ai, interfaces, and controllers. It's an excellent make, oh, and their DAW Studio One beats everything they are a lot of users on ProTools HD like I was who switched to Presonus.... Regarding the tech service, I had a very friendly tech at support services, when I had a few issues with the 64S, and they fixed all.... Your experience looks surprising to me, I hope you found a solution....

Hello again Jake, thank you so so much for your advice against presonus Ar16c desk, I did get it from Thomann in Germany, and now its on its way back, I really hoped it would work out for me, but honestly I just could not warm myself to it after hearing your review on this desk and the sad misfortune you have had with 2 of these desk going down on you, I will however say one good thing for the desk, I loved how I was able to sing to my backing tracks and make a recording to play back in my van, and so clear and ok I will also say once the recording is on the SD card, it's still not playing back at a volume level suitable to record onto cd, I have to first bring each track to cloudbounce mastering, but that aside, using it live Litteraly had me pulling my hair out on stage, I just could not get a good sound and the effects all I could use was number 8 and very little at that, it has a nice lush plate but my god cheap and hissy, so Jake my friend everything you said about the desk is true and if I could send you a pic now, you will see its back in its box and packaging waiting to be collected by the courier, so now I'm being steered towards the Tascam model 16 or 24 whichever, still I'm told has the recording ability, even better with the ability overdubbing, but!!!! how reliable is it and is it any good for live stage, I'm completely confused now losing hours of sleep and every day browsing the Web for answers none to be found, people paid by companies to promote their wares, who do one believe in the end, its an absolute minefield and backstabbing one another, you are genuine and not paid by anyone and with experience of such products, presonus have certainly lost out here big time because of how they treated you, so where do i go from here, I like the ability to record but also want a desk that has excellent mic preamps and 2 effects engines to play with like my old Dynacord cms 1000, is in your opinion the tascam the next best option and I have read somewhere it's single effects engine is not the best, I honestly don't know Jake 🤔

Hello Martin P. I am sorry to hear that you eventually became another victim of Presonus. I really can't say much more about how unreliable they are. But, on to new things. I now use the ZOOM L-20 as my main mixer. I also have a ZOOM L-12 for my live shows.
      zoomcorp.com/en/us/digital-mixer-multi-track-recorders/digital-mixer-recorder/livetrak-l-20/
I think that there are many other recording mixers that can get the job done. Thomann has many options. Of course, budget is also a factor. The ZOOM L-20 was $1000 but worth the money because it works well and I don't have to mess around with talking to a nasty customer service team. Portability might also be a factor too. If you have to use the mixer at live shows it should be easy to pack up and take out to the show. I find that anything other than a Presonus is probably going to be just fine. TASCAM has a good name in the recording world. Don't lose sleep by thinking about mixers. You are doing the right thing by researching the options that are available. Also, remember that each person has a different requirement for recording. One that I really like about the L-20 is the output section. I can send 6 different headphone mixes to the musicians. It helps to have everything so flexible for people to hear. Also, being able to record all tracks to the SD card at one time is fabulous. Each mixer has good and not so good points. haha. NOTHING to worry about. Take a deep breath and take your time to decide. You will make the right choice! In the meantime, be safe and stay healthy!! peace. by the way, I love visiting GERMANY. I have lots of friends in Munich. rock on!
