James O'Brien: We shouldn't presume ALL politicians are corrupt | LBC

  • James O'Brien reacts to some of the latest developments in Gamblegate - deeming the wagers as 'emotional hedges' and 'small fry'.
    James states that if we want to 'restore respect' for politicians, we can't presume that they are 'all corrupt'.
    The Gamblegate scandal includes police officers and politicians from multiple parties - and largely centres around predictions on the date of the upcoming election.
    One member of Rishi Sunak's close protection team was arrested over an alleged bet made on the date of the election, and has since been bailed.
    Six more police officers are now being investigated by the Gambling Commission.
    Meanwhile, as many as fifteen Conservatives could be under investigation by the Gambling Commission over alleged bets made on the date of the election, reports suggest.
    One Labour candidate, Kevin Craig, bet on himself to lose in the upcoming election. He was immediately suspended by the Labour Party.

    The Tories refer to each other as the righr honourable member. The electorate more realistically think of them as the downright horrible members. James is right though there are people that get elected who really want to serve their electorate. But if they have served within the last 14 years and have not switched, left the party or called out the corruption they have been complicit in the corruption.

    • @vulture46
      @vulture46 3 місяці тому +1

      Starmer is not as bad as Sunak or any past Tory PM - he literally hasn't had the chance to be bad so saying he's just as bad as them is silly. Until we've had 14 years of labour scandals and a worsening country it's not really fair to judge an apple tree to rotten oranges.
      I don't like Starmer one bit (Corbyn had [more] spine and vision than Starmer could wish for even if he was given a genie with infinite wishes) but let's not pretend he's as bad as the people responsible for leading this country down the drain - THAT would be erroneous judgement.

I don't remember when it became normal to worry about stuff like this and after being advised by so many to go for PIP, only to have to jump through their hoops for their assessments and be declined and appealed. I wholly disagree. Treat every politician as corrupt and due zero respect or benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise. For far too long we've accepted the lowest of the low, we need our politicians to be held to a higher standard than the populace, and that starts by making them prove they deserve our respect.
    The people who make it to the point of becoming an MP have seen so many other people being filtered out, and those are the people who have the best interests of the country at heart. It's the psychopaths who make it through this process much more so than others.
    How often have we heard about what is best for the conservative party? It's never what's best for the country. This is the problem, it's party politics that is one of the biggest issues we face when looking at trying to rehabilitate politics, the entire system encourages prioritising the wrong things.

    If you want respect, you have to earn it: start by making the rules honest, clear, and freely inspectable. Make breaches - even tiny ones - heavily punishable and remove their snouts from the trough. Prove you are honest, and the impression may change. Professional sport contracts have a "keep trying" clause. You can't skive if your side is down, because you're essentially a paid entertainer. If a failed candidate bet on himself to lose, he has breached his contract with supporters.

    It shows the state of the current government and the Tory party that there exists such a thing as “minister for common sense”. 😂😂😂Obviously the minister does not extend he ministerial power or mission her husband nor to her party.
