This was one of the few albums worthy enough for me to buy when I was a teenager. I had to travel to find it. They didn't sell it in Orange County. I found it in Hollywood. Such deep feelings from youth come up when I hear these tunes and tones.
lucky so and so ,I've been looking for this record for sooooooo long ,ever since I lost my boot leg home recorded cassette during a move and have never come across a copy of it ever since, and yeah I still have and play cassettes , loads of great bands/songs ,that I refuse to replace on C.D or some form of digital player/collection
Late night summer of 1986 I had returned to my parents suburban bungalow from a job flipping burgers. I was trying to save enough for a school trip to London, the epicentre of cool, the city of my dreams. Turn on CKLN the best college radio station in Toronto and this song began. I immediately pressed record on my tape deck, the opening riffs had transfixed me. Years of re-listening followed. I had almost forgotten the song until I found it on iTunes by happenstance.
Luke Rendle played on Westworld an all previous singles - - - - Then IMO the album was ruined by choice of songs an producer!!!! .The amount of great tracks left off the Album Westworld - instead of stuff like "Freaks!! - The Klan! - The New Trail of Tears" ! . ... I read on billy duffy's website that there was a running joke that Theatre of Hate and Southern death Cult were known as the Cowboys and Indians by their fans @@newgraham
The yellow sun was setting in tombstone The citizens were gone but not to their homes By a freak a coin in the piano made it play But only the wind and the dust heard it say Do you believe in the Westworld? Do you believe in the Westworld? From the south on a wind in walked a cowboy The saloon was dry but his guns were well oiled Somehow he remembered when he kissed his wife And when he said goodbye But that was before the circus with the bear arrived Oh the bear it roared as the gun was fired Then the cowboy turned the gun on himself as he sang "No one's alive" Do you believe in the Westworld? Speelden ze daar ook ? Zag ze in de Stokvishal. Prima optreden.Heb veel goede bands in De Gigant gezien, btw. Uit mn hoofd: David Thomas (Pere Ubu), Tuxedomoon, Modettes, Half Japanese, This Heat. Fantastische programmering dus daar...
First saw TOH early 80's amongst a plethora of punk bands at the Cardiff Top Rank. I remember Kirk Brandon swigging from a carton of orange juice in between songs and thinking, "Is this punk?" Needless to say, I enjoyed their set anyway!
Saw them in Tiffany's in Glasgow many years ago still love Westworld to the day.Backing them up were southern death cult who became the cult but I preferred theatre of hate and spear of destiny. Stay Free
It's As If Kirk Brandon And Yul Brynner Had Somehow Formed A Kind Of " Surreal Cultural Pact " !! Both This Single From The Eighties And The Self Titled Film From The Seventies Are " Indispensable Cult Classics " !!! In My View From Adrian Browne 1965
Excellent Excellent album. When I was London all of Kings Road could only talk of TOH. I bought all the albums when I came home. It still is strong. Powerful stuff. Sorry, the music doesn't compare what on in the MS scene. It's like good whiskey compared to... you get the picture.
a track so fucking good it takes the piss. seen rusty dj a few times , seems to have got a bit' paul oakenfold'. no need for micky mills with this track my friends... if there's music we can use it. for those in the know i salute you.
I have often wondered if this song was in any linked to the film Westworld?! I have tried to Google the songs meaning but the lyrical meaning has almost been non existent or a very small cliff note in an almost equally small commentary on the album as a whole.
I think Kirk has drawn elements from the film but it's more a rant against capitalism and injustice in modern society...Oh my god!... I sound like a cock.. Theatre of Hate and Spear of Destiny are truely fantastic.. New album out soon....
I remember an interview with Smash Hits magazine, which will be at least 35 years ago now. Kirk Brandon talked about the song, a couple of points of which for some reason, stuck with me to this day. The 'Westworld' of the title, is 'America', but as it is seen through the eyes of the rest of the world. The cowboy in the song was US President Reagan, and the bear mentioned is Russia. The 'yellow sun setting in Tombstone', is American manufacturing being sent abroad (specifically China and Japan were named by Kirk). 'Do you believe in the Westworld' equated to 'Do you believe in (the myth of) America.' Amazing how things like that stay with you all this time :)
This sounds like the original recording I remember playing in 1982.. may have been remastered, crystal clear here. (Saw Theatre of Hate live last night - band is still great almost 4 decades later..)
@monsterz01 - '82 or '83 I think. There's a wikipedia article on both the band and the album, so you could check that if you want to be absolutely certain.

Unbelievable playing!
JEFF, you alive? Ostap asked you a question 2 yrs ago
That’s cool!
This really is a classic album. Every track is good, don't have to skip through any duds when you listen to this.
This was one of the few albums worthy enough for me to buy when I was a teenager. I had to travel to find it. They didn't sell it in Orange County. I found it in Hollywood. Such deep feelings from youth come up when I hear these tunes and tones.
I wish I could do that, I’m 13!
Wasn’t a Licorice Pizza album-of-the-week back in those days? Yeah, no. Or that place by the ice rink? 😂 Maybe later in the bins at Noise Noise Noise?
I buy this vinyl yesterday on the Record Store Day here in Mexico.
Great LP!!!

It sounds like a cross between Boney M and Joy Division which is truly unique.
you can add 'kings of the wild fronteir" in that drums list.. 1st band i know of that had 2 drummers??... crackin!!! 🙂\
I’d say them and car seat headrest!
I truly never tire of hearing this track...it's incredible
it is timeless classic in my box As you said i never tire of hearing this
I saw TOH at Woodville Halls, Gravesend, Kent. I think in 1979/80. One of my favourite gigs.
Reminds me so much of The Southern Death Cult...love it! It's like...political, gothic tribal punk.
Yes......
Political, gothic tribal, punk is my favorite sub-genre... Do you clog?!
It is
Good ear. Billy Duffy was Theatre of Hate's guitarist before joining SDC and both bands had a bit of a native American theme.
I read on billy duffy's website that there was a running joke that Theatre of Hate and Southern death Cult were known as the Cowboys and Indians by their fans @@newgraham
Love these guys. Just listening to some old John Peel and he was playing some tunes off King of Kings from like 1980
I never tire of this great song
"Westworld" and Kate Bush's "The Dreaming" were my favorite albums in 1982.
Add My Life in the Bush of Ghosts and I'll love you 4eva
Hahaha... A bit of a contrast in styles... Weren't 76 to early 83 the best for new fashion... Individuality. & Basically cool 🥰
And dont forget the damned's strawberries
Superb album,and a timeless classic.
This track, and 63 are my faves.

I heard them first time when I was 16 ( in 1985 ). I still have a copy of it on tape. Oh, what a summer was then.... :-) :-)
Found this LP in excellent condition at a used record store in Alabama of all places. Boy was I delighted..
The best Positive-Punk song and band to come out of the UK by far!!!
So pleased I switched the radio off in 1970's and retuned to Radio 4
How did R4 sound with the radio off?
Yeah! Kids forty years ago, eh?
Best song of the 80's!
