The X is rad. I'm glad I got it. The OG komodo is my favorite camera, but the quality of life upgrades has made it definitely worth it (to me)

The X gets all built out, and the regular stays stripped down for gimbals or drone. Might even pick up a third since you can operate all of them by yourself via the red control pro app

Marginally, but yes. You jave face af if you use the red control app. Id also imagine firmware updates will be more prevalent.

Fair enough I guess. My point was if I had to choose only one camera forever to shoot with it was only not the komodo because of these smaller issues. Now that they have been fixed I would go for it every time, its not even a question for me. I do understand it's a lot but I'm not buying it to say oh look I have a red, I'm buying because I legitimately think it's overall as close to a perfect cam as possible with all the changes for what I shoot. Your mileage may vary of course.
Planning to upgrade to the X next year. Very excited for it. Digging the channel too btw, just subscribed :)

Other than looking for a good monitor for the Komodo (per my comment on your other video) looks like I need to look into ANOTHER follow focus system because my f*&#ing Tilta Nucleus-N handwheel just died on me. Refuses to accept any batteries that I put into it. Uuuuf >_< So if you have any suggestions, I'm all ears!

@@animusvisual I was looking into the Nano ii, it does look like a pretty nice upgrade. My Nano wheel works fine when plugged in via the USB port, but of course that defeats the purpose of having this sort of device if it needs to be plugged into a battery or wall outlet. I suppose my short term solution would be to plug it into the USB port on one of my V-mount batteries, so at the very least it can remain fully hand held.

Agreed, I still prefer the image out of a pocket to my fx6 in some cases and that's incredible. Any camera in the last 2 years is going to give you a great image. The difference comes down to usability and workflow in relation to what you shoot, indeed preference. Thanks for watching!
Can I know if the X is 16 stops dynamic range or 13 like the OG?
Its only half a stop better than the og in the shadows. Users report cleaner shadows on the kx.

@@animusvisual I'm actually planning to buy it as an investment. I'm stuck whether I should go for Ursa G2 or the Komodo-X. Dynamic range is something that I'm more focused on.
@@kylehalim5957 i think the dynamic range is over estimated by all manufacturers except maybe arri. The tested dynamic range by cine d is a good standard when compared to other cameras tested. They found right under 13 for the original so yes, about 13 usable stops for kx.

Do you know if the crop on the x (besides the 6k 80) is the same as the OG Komodo? like if I need to shoot at 120 etc
Yea if you need 120 you will have to move to 4k which is same crop as it was on the og komodo from 6k to 4k
Would love to use the speedbooster but I’m yet to find a good solution for ND filters
The Canon formal reducer is great, sharp and allows me to go really wide. Some full frame lenses even vignette a bit. For nd run and gun I'll go variable which isn't great but I do have a few ir nd in different strengths that adapt to my lenses with step up rings. I have tokina ir nds and they're wonderful.
@@animusvisual screw onsI guess. That’s not an option for me as I only shoot cine lenses and I don’t want to be screwing filters on and off. I also need to stack filters often
@Damien Cooper for my cine lenses I'm using bright tangerine misfit atom and 4x5.65 irnd filters
@@damiencooper - the magnetic NDs & Polarizer from Kase Wolverine have changed my life. I have not missed internal ND. Also, variable NDs have too many issues.
Komodo X is now ready for prime time. I made some videos comparing the original w an Varicam.

@@fremworks You actually can. Especially before uploaded to UA-cam. The DR is also very different. You can't colorgrade information that isn't available. 16bit stores a massive amount of data. Sonys tend to look very digital, excluding the Venice.

Cropping at lower resolutions couldve been an easy firmware update, but no, Red gotta be Red and ship this feature on a new camera to make people justify the 4k price increase.
Im not selling my komodo because KX has nothing to be jealous for, but god damn man, Blckmagic is giving backwards updates to their 5 year old cameras that their 2023 cameras have.
I felt the same but its not a firmware update. Komodo physically just doesn't have the horsepower. Remember this was made as a Hollywood crash cam and wasn't meant to encroach on the bigger bodies. The price was right at 6k for all you get. The global shutter sensor was all new and an entirely new global sensor had to be made for the Komodo x to allow the additional framerates. Even if it wasn't the case, cfast was still going to be a limiting factor to shoot high framerate 6k. I own pockets and yes they have done updates but talk to the ursa guys and they'll tell you how forgotten they've been. Nothing is ever perfect

@@animusvisual One thing I just realised. You can't shoot 4K without cropping if you're shooting Raw files. So that means you're shooting on prores?
@Fivos Vas I'm mostly only ever needing to shoot 60fps which I can still do in 6k on the x. 4k120 is kind if specialty and I'm ok with a crop if ever that framerate is needed but It's not often. That said yes, I wouldn't mind shooting pro res 444 for example in 4k to get certain framerates uncropped. Still would have a ton of wiggle room in post.

That's not what's been said. Unless you're Jarred and are changing your story its been confirmed the global shutter sensor itself had a limitation.
Red is just a louie bag for vidoegraphers xD the X's 4k 120 vs the 4k 120 of 2k camera... their might be 1-5% difference but it might be even worse. lets hang komodo x 4k 120 vs the 4k 120 of the fx 30 xD
but the 6k-5k obviously are nice xD rip harddrives!
I won't argue about the Louie bag thing but it's well deserved imo. Believe me there's a huge difference in post between redraw and any other camera 10 bit or even braw. I said the same until I got to play with it in resolve. I'm game to do a comparison video between those 2 modes.

If Red is a Louie bag, what's an Arri or Sony Venice? I think many videographers try to compare videographer cameras and cinema cameras too much. You can get away with being a one man band with the Fx series, C70s and pocket 6ks. Arri, Sony Venice and Red was never created to be a one man band camera. The are meant for crews that specialize in specific areas. Don't forget, the Komodo was created to be a C cam or crash cam i.e. a go pro.

There's definitely been some upgrades. From the live I watched, yes, though it could be "face detection" 😂

@dushyant bhatt right I mean that I just heard it so I believe it was phase detection but it could be face detection. What I know for sure is that there is autofocus improvements over the original komodo. How much better will have to be tested.
