A testament of quality: I'd rather rewatch old Mythbusters eps instead of other shows on the air now.
indeed
Agreed
I'm not *really* aware of any truly *bad* episodes of Mythbusters, but I will say that when you catch one with the "am I missing ... an eyebrow?"-bit in the intro, that's usually a sign of exceptionally good eps. Love the early stuff for its raw simplicity.
Or "Quack damn you"
People watch intros?
He has that episode on the channel. I just don’t remember the name.
From what I know the team regrets doing the pyramid power episode (Adam still apologizes for it) and any of the mind control episodes are a bit on the kooky side IMO.
You could say some episodes were less entertaining than the others. But I agree, no really bad ones come to mind. There are always haters of course... Personally I think this was one of the best shows that is hard to top.
"Our death ray doesn't seem to be working. I'm standing right in it and... I'm not dead yet."
His disappointed tone really sells it.
Probably my favorite Mythbusters oneliner.
On the other hand, the idea that a Roman ship sailed away from Syracuse in terror at seeing Archimedes start to assemble a "death ray" is absolutely believable. Just feeling a little bit of warmth and perhaps seeing a bit of smoke from heated up beeswax would be more than enough. Archimedes once got men to abandon an attack on a wall by dangling a piece of rope from the battlements. The Romans were terrified of him.

That skunk was probably thinking...."What are these people, crazy?"
The sunray mirror test is very cool.
Don't use it on any of your friends... 🏹❤🔥💘
Okay, so that was one of the most important project on mythbusters ever. Even I learned in history class that this archimedes shipburning thing was a real fact. So megabust.
What you haven't taken into account is they are at sea and both objects would be moving up and down with the waves; there is no way they could aim all mirrors on the same spot at the same time.
I'm quite intrigued by the mugshot artwork in the M6 women's bathroom. Seems like an interesting choice.
I remember that building somewhere. Its windows are arranged such that it melted plastic chairs in a nearby resort.
The sky garden building in London has melted car parts
43:23 it's so much fun to see Jamie goofing off 😆
21:00 look how young they look!
Break all the mirrors before they set you on fire... 🔥
Hi! ) love Mythbusters. I once read that each soldier stuck his spear in the ground some feet in ront of him and used this as a sight to aim his shield (mirror) at the ship. Archiides probably had five or six thousand men spread over the hill side - the bigger the better - so I really believe that he was successful.
Good times
I was looking for the "what is bulletproof" part for so long! 29:08
What if the death ray myth has a hint of truth in it. The idea that a wall of mirrors (or polished shields) was used to set fires to a ship is busted 3 times over. But I wonder if it was instead intended as a way of using the sun to distract or blind the enemy. My guess is it would be pretty hard to aim a bow or spear with the sun in your eyes, and I think if something like this was used it could be miss interpreted hundreds of years later as a death ray
I'm quite sure Archimedes knew how to build a parabolic mirror setup, which would focus the beam way more than this flat setup. Probably still not hot enough and not easy to aim, so the myth is still busted, but they did not try the best way.
For the bulletproof part, I would rather refer to Scott and Kentucky Ballistics. .22cal? .44cal? Let's see if it can stop a .50cal, a projectile from an elephant rifle or the 4Bore...
They were holding mutiple parabolic mirrors. Like polished bronze shields turned backwards.
Setting boats on fire no. Temporarily blinding or confusing the enemy with mirrors, a possibility.
5:43 😂😂😂
Random statement: I bet NO ONE will recognize Jamie if he lost his mustache and beard.
Rumors say he was born with it...
That Jim Rockwell fella sounds just like Johnny Cash...
one of the best ones there was
Iconic episode.
this is my favorite eposide
🐺We have a skunk roaming the neighbourhood , it smells like skunk. 🦨
Nioce!
What about the seals of the ship? Couldn’t this burn easier?
Hey, slow down with uploads, we cant watch this fast 😁
The first attempt.
I wonder if they didn't just blind the people on the boat and shot a flaming arrow at it and that set it ablaze
28:28 I'm not sure if I get the narrator's point there -- the book did stop a rifle bullet, so...
Tbh I would've loved a "how many pages to stop..." series ;)
All those things will stop a bullet in the right circumstances, depending on the bullet and the distance it has been fired from.
I don't think this is true at all. For the first, the Romans didn't have a war fleet when the war began! Second, when Carthage and Syracuse lost the battle of Messina trying to force the Romans out of Sicily, they quickly dumped Carthage as their ally and joined the Roman side against Carthage, who had been their long-time rival on the island to begin with.
Poor skunk...a little bit of cruelty with the animal there and aired in tv... How time changes!
bireme, trireme .... number of decks of rowers ....
Dang Kari and Tory early appearance
What makes you think that he didn't use mirrors to consentrate it through a magnifying glass I now you can start fire with that use to do so when I wanted a fire use to gather some dry matter and set it on fire with a small magnifying glass and wrote my name on leather using it
You must be a boyscout to know these things and you should keep it a secret before Putin learns about this... ⚓
One, because there was no mention of magnification in historical record.
Two, because such lenses were not of the quality needed at the time. They would absorb too much of the power as they were not optically clear.
Three, because convex lenses have a converging point, after that the light diverges. To bring the death ray to a point anywhere near the ships, it'd need to be floating in the water far closer to the ship.
@@ordyhorizonrivieredunord712 lmao obsessed 😬
What season is this?
Season 2 Episode 3 as mentioned in the description.
I used to watch this show all the time obsessively, when I was was about 11 years old, and now, Adam Savage and i both are 56 years old. he looks younger than me actually.
So you were 11 in 2003, and somehow now 56 in 2024? Hmmmm…
If you and Adam are the same age, then he would have also been 11 when you were watching him...
Yes 😸
This was not done right. You don't know anything about ancient "death rays". They were holding mutiple parabolic mirrors. Like polished bronze shields turned backwards.
The Natzies also wanted to build one in to space, to burn out cities from orbit.
8:52 BOYS
IF 1000 PEOPLE EACH HELD AND FOCUSED THEIR OWN MIRROR YOU WOULD GET A BETTER RESULT... NOT BUSTED
Why test Aluminium? It was not in use in 300BC.
The myth talked about bronze shields being used, but because bronze can be rather expensive they were looking for a cheaper modern material that had roughly the same reflective properties as bronze.
They tested Aluminium to see if it could be a stand-in for bronze.
I´m the only one who see Tory slimmer and thinner in this season? He clearly gains weight if former seasons
This is his first season, actually.
The 2 person to watch this master peace

Rest in peace scotty.
Say what? You sure you're not thinking of Jessie Combs (who died in 2019)?
You may have confused her with Jessie
How does this lady know what a men's room in a dive bar smells like??? 🦨
Unless she's been there... 🌹
