I gained weight on testosterone and progesterone. I gained 5 lbs in 3 months taking it. Yes, felt better but I was working out 5-6 days a week and on a 1200-calorie diet. Still gained weight and muscle. My hips, butt, and thighs got bigger and I started to see cellulite more on arms, legs and back!!!!!
I started in January 2 years post menopause I’m 46 so younger than average Iv managed ok without HRT however the hot flashes and lack of sleep were the driving force to starting HRT Within days I felt bloated and within 6 weeks I’d gained 10 lbs which has been so disappointing because Iv maintained my weight for so long. I fast for 18 hours I walk 10,000+ steps daily and I workout at home for 30-60 minutes 3-4 times a week so Iv stopped taking the HRT for now and will try again in a year or two bit right now with summer round the corner in want my body to feel like mine and it didn’t when I took the hormones 🙁 I know it’s fabulous and life changing for so many women though.
I did too!! And after a year of that I stopped them bc this isn’t right . I was 31 & put on them To help get my cycles back after a baby , I didn’t get my cycle back until well after i got off the bio-identical. It took my body a year to return to its normal size. I’m hesitant to ever try them again now that I’m 48 . My body just didn’t like bio-identical . I don’t think they are exactly like our own hormones based on my bodies experience with them . Which I could go into but this would get long. But hey for some ppl it helps there symptoms of aging or hormone imbalance . It just wasn’t for me & my body figured itself out as it should .
I gained 17 lbs Workout 7 days a week - lift, cardio etc. been lean all my life and gained 10 fast the first 3 months then 7 over a year. Got off them and working to get lbs off. Got no benefit fr it. Was doing Wiley protocol.
If hormone replacement is given correctly, we're simply putting back what was there before which will not cause weight gain however, sometimes hormones are given an excessive amount which can cause weight gain, and other times it coincides at a time and our life when our metabolism slows down, so women gain weight around the time of menopause, whether or not they take hormones. So there's a lot of confounding factors.
Before I began pellets, I did Peloton spin classes 4 times a week and cut out meat, dairy and reduced my sugar intake with attempts to stay at a 1500 calorie intake. I was exhausted and hungry! I could not lose weight and slowly over the course of two years I put on almost 15 lbs for no reason I could find. Sometimes seeing the scale spike 3-4 lbs overnight! Once I watched a few HRT videos, I realized that I was not considering hormones as the culprit. I changed doctors and my new doctor suggested pellets. Almost within 3 months, I lost 10lbs without changing anything I did with a ton of added positive side effects like extra energy to feel active after 3 pm, better sleep, strength improvements, my light depression and anxiety was alleviated, and my family said I seemed happier. In the 3 yeras that I have been on pellets, I have never felt better! I am now down almost 20lbs and am happy with how I look and feel. Pellets were definately the key for me and I also recognize that pellets and HRT are not the answer for everyone. Good luck on your journeys!
You should put me back in your diet how could you cut out meat it's the most nutritious food you can eat you need more fat that's why you're hungry all the time animal fat
I was fortunate to sail through menopause without any issues, so I didn't consider HRT. Interestingly enough, I also went hardcore keto at the same time period, so that may have heled. I'm intrigued by some of the other potential benefits though for maintaining fitness, etc. Thanks for sharing this info!
In addition to checking TSH, T4,and T3 another very important hormone is reverse T3 - (R-T3) because it is a relatively inactive form of T3 that attaches to the T3 receptor sites and prevents the active form from doing its job hormonally.
Absolutely agree- I personally don't check reverse T3 unless there's some other thyroid abnormality because as you know, this is quite unusual to be abnormal, but it's very important test to do if thyroid functions are not optimal
I gained even more weight when I started Estrogen and Testosterone pellets! I felt so bloated on pellets. Once I switched to testosterone injections and estrogen cream bloating and weight started falling off. I know everyone is different so works for me may not work for everyone else.
I’ve gained 40lbs on HRT. I’m sleeping better and anxiety is better, but depression is worse because I look like crap. I hate this because I don’t know whether to stay on HRT or not
What about water weight? I had testosterone pellets several years ago. Felt amazing. Had 20 pounds of water weight in less than two weeks. Switched to pills, then topicals. Didn’t feel the same benefit, still had significant bloating. Diuretics made me feel like trash. I’d love to go back on testosterone, but oh man, the bloating.
Excessive doses of hormones can cause water retention but remember we're simply trying to replace what we had before. I do not think it's a good idea to give excessive amounts of hormones!
I'm new to hormone therapy but understand how my metabolic dysfunction puts me more at risk for weight gain. Like having an A1C of 7 or higher is inflammation or high triglycerides from drinking will change how hormones stay active.
I started Estrogen and Progesterone in December. Then added Testosterone in January.I have put on 5lb that won't budge.I feel good and won't go off but combined with my Hashimoto's weight loss is literally impossible.
Try intermittent fasting. I go 7pm to 11am the next day without eating. Herbal teas and black coffee are ok. Slowly push your breakfast by one hour every week you won't believe the difference. Also start your day with protein. I like goat whey shake. On the weekend skip it. 5 days a week is good. I have Hashimoto's as well. This has helped.
When i got my first pallet put in, (all three hormones), i noticed some days, i seemed to be loosing weight, other times i would look bloated like i was having water retention. Overall i eat healthy but my weight gain is 💯 menopause, not HRT. I loose weight slowly and i need to exercise more than i did in my 20s but sleeping through the night is crucial. I do see a diff when i do low carb because my body retains less water making me look lean. Still trying to figure out how to get rid of the tire around my belly though.
Interesting and makes good sense. Would you address the effects on the skin perhaps. And, what might be the window of time after last menstrual cycle for the therapy to be effective. for the skin/bones, heart/brain, etc. My skin is very dry and wondering if hormone replacement would help with hydration and firmness (increase collagen). Thank you so much.
In my 70 s I went on vaginally cream estrogen, to prevent dryness in that area plus bladder infections. I had many till I went on vaginally cream estrogen.
Yes weight gain happened to me as well. Especially oral progesterone was really affecting me negatively causing bloating weight gain and lack of energy. As a very health conscious person, I exercise and ate well most of my life. Organic home made foods, lots of protein, low carb to keep my autoimmune arthritis and psoriasis from flaring up. It’s very important to me to stay the same healthy weight which I maintained my whole life. HRT is a little disappointing as I feel I need to workout even harder while I am on the hormones. Loosing any weight is almost impossible no matter how hard I work out… I am on estrogen patch, progesterone cream and small dose of testosterone cream. I am on it for the other benefits but still trying to figure out which route and dose is right I think testing in more detail how the hormones are metabolized may be the key as it is different for everyone. Still struggling
Me too. I feel like everyone now started talking how amazing HRT is and I felt horrible on it. I gave it 6 months and tried really hard to stay on it because of the purported long term benefits, but I was miserable, bloated, boobs swollen and tender and overall sluggish. I was only on estradiol and progesterone, maybe adding testosterone would have helped, but I am terrified of side effects. The women I see who are supplementing testosterone appear to have hair loss and voice deepening.

I was forced to go off hrt, and continued to gain another 20 pounds, so I don't believe it was the hrt plus my daughter at 53 years has never had hrt therapy and gained a ton of weight. I believe it is our body rebelling against life s body changing, such as low estrogen. 🤪
I have gained weight taking estrogen & progesterone for 6 years. Bloating and moody too ! I eat well and don't eat after 5 or 6 pm. I'm not a snacker. I want to go off HRT but then remember hot flashes and not sleeping.
Hopefully this will be helpful. I noticed if I take the progesterone every night I sleep well, but I retain more water/weight, I feel tired and moody during the day. I feel much better when I take just the estrogen and the testosterone, way more energy, my mind is so much clearer! Vitamin E was the thing that took away my hot flashes. The progesterone helped some, but the vitamin E truly has been a game changer for the hot flashes and my body aches. Plus I can still have alcohol!
@@Wendy-t1v Thank you for your helpful response ! I would love to eliminate the progesterone, but my doctor said because I still have my uterus, I have to take it. You described me to a tee . Same thing for me me with sleep , bloating and moody & tired.
I gained 20 pounds since HRT. My hormone doctor thought I was taking too much estradiol/testosterone cream. I also take 100mg pill of progesterone. I can’t seem to get my hormones balanced. I’ve been struggling with this since 2012 when I went on them. When the night sweats go away then I’m on too much estradiol and put on more weight. So they lower my dosage and then the night sweats are back. Back on 2022 I switched doctors and he had me on a lot of estradiol. My current doctor says she’s weening me off that. Wouldn’t that be out of my system in two years time? My husband thinks I should stop taking them. I’m 67. I exercise, eat healthy but can’t lose any weight.
I started HRT and gained weight (15lbs), just like when I was on birth control. I actually don’t care whatsoever though, because of ALL the other benefits of HRT.
People keep saying weight gain is water. I wonder about taking potassium to get the water weight off? There was some article and Idk where I saw it that said potassium helps with breast swelling during pms.(sttm) I have addisons so I was able to take potassium at one point but my current endo refuses to test and treat low aldosterone, which im fine with I guess. I was so much thinner on florinef and 60 meq potassium, didnt have bloat. This was also pre menopause. Just something to maybe experiment with . Fda got rid of otc potassium.
Aldosterone competes for the progesterone receptors. Aldosterone helps hold onto salt. If its low, you kick out salt, if its high or normal you hold salt. Think salt is high, potassium low. Idk, just thinking aloud.

If another physician prescribed Temazepam for you, then all Dr. Susan can do is make a suggestion one way or the other. She cannot negate another physician's orders. I'm betting she may prescribe her own regimen for you based upon the testing she orders, and tell you to continue the Temazepam for while at least.
