I 100% agree. My husband is my best friend. I tell him everything. Our relationship started as friendship. It grew into romantic love over time. I had a don' date your friends rule, but he was the exception. I realized that we were practically already dating. It was an easy transition from friendship to love. It just felt so natural. We've been together 10 years now and married for 6. It isn't always easy, but I couldn't imagine spending my life with anyone else.

From what the director said, he said they are making or fighting or something like that of deciding to be in a relationship, relationship. And in one of the scenes, (prepare yourself y’all, it’s about to be a juicy ride) judy’s family was at her apartment to pay her a visit. Nick comes in to hang out and they thought that it was her boyfriend and so yea UwU
I think there are some similarities, but overall they're pretty different. Eugene is more of an adventure-type while Nick is more of a hustler street-smart guy. Rapunzel and Judy are both bubbly, but Rapunzel's a free spirited dreamer while Judy's an idealistic worker.
Zootopia did a such a great job at establishing the foundation for Nick and Judy's relationship, the creators can build upon that foundation any way they wish. Personally, I would love for it to be romantic, but if they remain platonic, they would still be fun to watch.
I always felt their relationship were more platonic in the film, but there is definitely room for romantic growth. Edit: as I'm starting to suspect myself to be aromantic as even my deepest relationships has been largely platonic, now I'm curious how Nick and Judy's lives would be if they stayed platonic yet so close and affectionate that many mistake it as romantic 😅
I think through the film it was platonic, especially since they were still getting to know each other, but that last interaction between them had some sparks flying imo. at the end they had known each other for much longer since Nick had to go through the police academy
I really hope that Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps become a romantic couple and get married and have red fox and gray rabbit sons and daughters of their own in Zootopia 2, (Not fox and rabbit hybrids as it would be really weird for a Disney movie.) in Zootopia 2 and Zootopia 3. If water like Wade Ribble and fire like Ember Lumen in Pixar’s Elemental (2023) can become a romantic couple, with their families’ approvals, a red fox like Nick Wilde and gray rabbit like Judy Hopps can too.
If Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps do fall in love with each other and become a romantic couple in Tails from Zooptoia set after Zooptoia (2016) and before Zooptoia 2 with the series finale being a Valentine’s Day Special involving Nick and Judy getting married and moving into a new apartment in Savannah Central and having red fox and gray rabbit children introduced in Zooptoia 2 (Which is also Rio 2 (2014) done right.) which features them as the duteragontists while Nick and Judy are the protagonists, I want in the episode where Nick and Judy go on their first romantic date which could be an original story or an adaptation of one of these non-canon fan fictions or even have it be set during the end credits of Zooptoia revealing that Nick and Judy attending Gazelle’s concert was their first date and in this episode when Nick and Judy have their date together the song, “I Just Can’t Get Enough” by Decepe Mode or “ Photograph” should play because they reflect Nick and Judy’s personalities and romantic relationship perfectly. Don’t you agree? I mean depending on your point of view.
Are Nick and Judy just friends, an older brother and younger sister duo like Nooshy and Johnny in the Sing franchise or a real romantic couple and boyfriend and girlfriend and yet to be married and have kids to raise or platonic coworker buddies?
Zootopia 2 should be about this fox and bunny who are forced to manage their newfound relationship, in a large community that is still learning to become more accepting of predators. Due to this, they are all unfamiliar with and perhaps even blatantly against the idea of inter-species relationships. Just like the first film, Zootopia 2 would also relate to real-world issues of prejudice and discrimination, without it being too mature or explicit that it is no longer enjoyable for younger audiences. Maybe Nick and Judy's unusual relationship will cause the animals of Zootopia to be wary of them and their devotion to protecting the city, therefore affecting their jobs on the police force as respectable officers. By the end, they will have shed light on the idea that it's okay to be different, and inspired the audience to be brave enough to step out of the box and forge a new possibility or norm as well (as demonstrated by Judy in the first film, when she became the first bunny cop). While yes, pairing off the two main characters is common in Disney films, this couple would certainly be out of the ordinary. The sequence of this film would mark a progressive leap into the events of modern society, while still gaining status as a beloved Disney animated film like its predecessor. I understand why many people may not want Nick and Judy to become a couple, much less have their relationship be a primary focus in the plot of the sequel, but following the course of events from the first film - with the morals 'never give up on your dreams' and 'you can be anything you want to be' - I feel like including this plot would definitely make for a very globally progressive and engaging film that truly branches off from the first. Personally, Zootopia was unlike any other Disney movie I'd seen in a long time, if ever before. It had all the elements of a delightful and beautifully animated children's movie, yet also maintained inspirational morals that I strongly believe in as an individual. It had charm, ambition, aspiration, and awe; it had pain, obstacles, abuse, and loss. It had dreams, it had reality, and it addressed the line that always appears to divide the two, as set in stone by society. Zootopia 2 has a high standard to beat, so let's get it to it's fullest potential. The first film was such a wonderful story, and many of us want to see that taken in another extraordinary direction.

The problem is if they make Judy and Nick become a couple is then the discussion of offspring being sterile and not being able to have kids. In the animal world cross bread species animals like Mules, ligers and such cannot reproduce. While this is a movie with animals, but they should also talk about biological differences, have a character that is a mule, but cannot have children because of being a hybrid animal.
Nick and Judy's relationship was pretty much asking for shipping though tbh. They're the main characters, they have enemies to lovers vibes, forbidden relationship vibes (mildly at least), and they're a predator/prey dynamic. Also they go through awesome development together lol
Bonnie and Stu Hopps are better parents to Judy Hopps in the Zooptoia franchise than Peaches’ parents Manny and Ellie in the Ice Age franchise, (Continental Drift (2012) and Collision Course (2016) but not The Adventures of Buck Wild (2022)) Bonnie and Stu are angles and heroic protagonists who are optimistic and supportive towards Judy to the point where they allow her to follow her dream of becoming a police officer and move out of BunnyBurrow and to Zooptoia to do so without any overprotectiveness or pessimism and allow Nick (Alongside Nick’s own presumably widowed mother Mrs. Wilde and unlike Marlin towards Nemo initially in Finding Nemo (2003)) and even approved of Nick Wilde being her best friend and police partner in the ZPD despite foxes and rabbits being natural enemies and even boyfriend and future husband to marry and have red fox cub and gray rabbit children to raise with in Zootopia 2 if Nick and Judy’s relationship becomes romantic in that film, (Although this is mostly because around the same time Judy befriended Nick and got over her prejudice against foxes after meeting him Judy’s parents also got over their own grudge against foxes by becoming coworkers with Gideon Gray Judy’s ex-bully from her childhood.) and Bonnie and Stu were even optimistic and supportive towards their daughter Judy and heroic protagonist angles towards her to the point where they allowed her to become completely independent from and leave the Hopps family completely and live with and go on adventures with her new honorary family in Zootopia consisting of Judy herself, Nick Wilde, Gazelle, her tiger dancers, Clawhauser, Chief Bogo, Flash Slothmore and Priscalla Tripletoe, Finnick, The Otterton family (Emmet Otterton and Mrs. Otterton and the Otterton kids.), Sam, Fru Fru her husband and daughter Judy (shrew) (Also Judy’s goddaughter), Brianca, Mandy, Christine, Charisma and Tru Tru and Mr. Big and go on adventures with them in the city and in Zoo York City, San Fransoink and the rest of the world for the rest of their lives with Judy, Nick, Gazelle, her tiger dancers, Bogo, Clawhauser, Sam, Brianca, Mandy, Christine, Charisma and Tru Tru unmarried with no kids to raise or even married with kids to raise and Nick and Judy (If they are a romantic couple and boyfriend and girlfriend yet to be married and have kids to raise in the sequel or not.) and Bonnie and Stu dance separately from each other in Gazelle’s concert in the end credits of Zootopia. This is nothing compared to how Manny and Ellie acted overprotective, overly clingy and pessimistic towards Peaches like anti-heroes and overprotective devils to the point where they don’t allow her to move away and explore the world with Julian disapproving of him for his behavior as well until the end of Collision Course, where they reconcile with Peaches and finally approve of her plans to marry Julian and move away with him and explore the world in their honeymoon in Collision Course (2016) making Diego and Shira (Who are deciding on whether or not they should have kids of their own to raise, they will trust me.) look like better parents to Peaches by comparison.
They will considering that zootopia pulled in a stunning amount of money. And depending on how the rates and the money income is on the 2ed movie there even might even be a 3
Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps are perfect for each other, their relationship started out like many others going over rocks and gravel, but in the end smoothed out in a great way. I say make another one
I think both sides are equally possible! The great thing about their relationship is that (in my opinion) They are wonderful friends! And that's very important either way! Your partner SHOULD be your best friend! And I don't mean to say that, you can't have another 'best friend', But I do believe couples should have that kind of a deep relationship! For example my boyfriend and I met years ago, became best friends, and then decided we both wanted more then that! I believe (If Disney were to explore the relationship more) THAT is what they were going for, A bond that grows over time, from near enemies, to friends, to BEST friends, to possible partners! In my opinion that is the best kind of relationship to have! But at the same time I think both would be happy just to have each other as wonderful friends! I remember my dad asking ''Are those two together?'' before watching the movie (I watched it in the cinema, he then watched the dvd at home) Then i said no. After the movie ended, he said ''Wait, they said they loved each other... So they ARE together'' and i explained ''That could just be as friends'' because thats how i saw it, and i thought that's how it was. I didn't know it was all about opinion :P
I don't think that the 'Opposite gender characters always get together" trope is necessarily a bad one. If the two characters have compatible sexualities and they become closer to each other than anyone else, I think that it's only natural that they develop a romance. And in the case of Nick and Judy, I think that there's a lot of potential not just for storytelling as you said, but also for them to just have a unique romance where it's not all lubby-dubby dialogue, but instead where they're still full of all the great quips and such, and act a bit more like platonic friends who enjoy each other's company for more than just romantic reasons.
One of my favorite ships is Godzilla and Mothra, I sometimes wish that Mothra instead of sacrificing herself for Godzilla but let another Monster like Angirus or Rodan sacrifice themselves for him instead, maybe even King Cesar, or even Battra Mothras evil brother as a way he can redeem himself. Or she would even die with him if it was the other way around and Godzilla sacrificed himself for Mothra instead and Mothra then committed suicide to stay with him in heaven.
Although the protagonists in the Zooptoia franchise so far including Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps themselves excluding Gazelle (With Try Everything) and Duke Weaselton (With Big Time) have not sang any songs yet mostly due to the Zootopia franchise (Aside from those two songs Gazelle and Duke sang.), The Wreck-It-Ralph franchise (Expect Vanelopee singing, “A Place Called Slaughter Race, Ralph does not sing any songs.) and Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) and Strange World (2022) are a few of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ only feature films/franchises not to be musicals where the protagonists and antagonists sing songs defining events and their personalities and goals unlike Walt Disney Animation Studios other feature films and franchises, Nick, Judy, Bellwether, Gazelle, Chief Bogo, Fru Fru, Mr. Big, Clawhauser, Ralph and the protagonists from Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) and Strange World (2022) can be heard alongside all the other protagonists/heroes and antagonists/villains from all of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ feature films, short films and franchises produced so far from 1923 to 2023, “When You Wish Upon a Star” the theme song for Pinocchio (1940) and the Walt Disney Pictures logo in Once Upon a Studio (2023) and Nick and Judy and the other protagonists and new characters and new antagonist/villain introduced in Zootopia 2 (Which will be superior to the first movie.) might sing more songs in that might be a musical film unlike the first movie or even a jukebox musical like the Trolls franchise and Sing franchise.
Regardless if it's canon, it would break my heart to think Judy and Nick were not at some point going to become a thing. They"re just too perfect for each other. I ship them so hard!! D:
To piggyback off of your observation, leaving the relationship open ended was on purpose to test the terrifying depths that is fandom shipping. For example, the legend of Korra brought us our very first fluid-romantic relationship in young adult media, BUT it was never stated exclusively in the show because it can be really hard to tell how fans are going to react. Having the idea in mind but not flat out saying keeps their hands clean until they can gage a reaction. As for the naysayers, I can see where they are coming from, most disney films shoehorn in a relationship at the last minute and it feels forced. Zootopia does not have this problem. There is actual character development with genuine emotion that is brought on through plot. These characters are responding in an organic way to a relatable situation. Why should sloppy slapdash exposition in other media trying to make a quick buck off a crappy plot twist (like the paint by numbers emoji movie for example), be held against a good story with actual progression? It's true that not all films should end in a romantic happily ever after, but in this case, a relationship is justifiable.
I think people forget that the first step to a romantic relationship is being simple friends. In my experience, friendship is the best way to enter a relationship, because even in marriage or even parenthood it never feels like the labels change what is between a couple: love isn't always characterized by specific behaviors (though it has also been my experience that there is such a thing as falling in love), and that is why I felt like Nick and Judy's chemistry in the third act to the end felt romantically coded.
In my opinion, I’d love to see Nick & Judy together in a romantic relationship. I think it would work quite well. But I trust that regardless of how the filmmakers take the series, if it gets a sequel, they handle it beautifully and respectfully.
You can be best friends with someone you are romantically involved in! Them becoming a couple wouldn't need to lessen their bond of friendship, and could even strengthen it. Not only could them becoming a couple help explore issues of interracial relationships, but it would be great to explore how a healthy relationship build on trust and mutual respect could look like. Of them being best friends, partners, and yes lovers while balancing their professional and personal lives. Yet perhaps while explorong feelings of self doubt, fear, uncertainty, and worry not only for if a relationship could work but in what others might think. A chance seeing Nick and Judy feeling venerability, yet depending on each other for support as they can work though their feelings yet still be awesome officers. That, and just seeing the joy the two could share in each other's company, and the potential of cute scenes.
In the Zooptoia franchise, Aside from the theory that Nick and Judy have a romantic relationship with themselves, do they happen to have any romances with any other people, did they date anyone before meeting each other or were even interested in getting married and having kids to raise, did Nick ever fall in love with and date any red fox vixens? Did Judy date or ever fall in love with any male rabbits? In the Moana franchise, meanwhile, Moana and Maui look like they so far don’t have any romances with anyone (Moana and Maui’s relationship is not romantic but only a friendship because of their age differences.) or even dated or fell in love with any male or female humans, goddesses or gods or demigods or demigoddesses before meeting each other.
I prefer them as best friends. A relationship like theirs is very rare, I’d love to see a boy and girl duo that stay platonic. Not every pair of male/female best friends has to get together.
Agreed, not every female and male lead have to get together, and I feel like that is a valuable message. You can be friends with the opposite sex, and that it is okay.
It's not like those relationships don't exist in TV and movies ya know. Just look at Friends! Lol and I get them being close friends, but in my opinion there were WAY too many moments that feel like their tiptoeing that line. Personally, my boyfriend started out as my best friend and we've been together for a pretty long time now. I mean, I don't care either way if they get together or not, but I root more for the side of an amorous relationship. I'm just saying when I walked out of the theater I turned to my sister and asked if it was wrong to ship those two together. She said since they're anthro, no. So it's cool. Also if they got together, it would be a really good example of interracial love since the whole movie was an allegory for race. To be honest, I kinda think that trumps the "platonic boy-girl relationships should preside since it's always portrayed as romantic" side since that could be done anywhere and with any movie and it wouldn't have as much meaning to the plot. With a romantic relationship, the allegory here would be extremely strong and would stand the test of time longer. I just think that's a better idea is all. It'd be awesome either way to see a Zootopia sequel but that's just my take on it, no offense was meant to be imposed so if I offended you in any way I'm sorry. Also sorry for the long reply lol

I can agree with your phrase "for now". Its true: not every story has to end with romance. Brave saw a daughter and mother become closer, Lilo and Stitch it-... well, I guess that doesn't count because of Jumba and Pleakly. Still, my point is that Judy and Nick being close friends makes a lot of sense and is more realistic. They created a close bond and platonically love each other. "For now". Like real relationships, and like Elsa pointed out: you can't fall in love with someone you just met and Frozen showed us the dangers of doing so (then Ana turns around and falls for a different guys she just met). If Judy and Nick end up together, that's great. Who knows what the future holds, but for now, a close friendship is still a wonderful relationship to have
Here is a thing about love that my grandfather told me. “When you fall in love it’s with your best friend. Either romantic or not.” And that is how I see Judy and Nick. No mater what their Relationship is. They are each other’s best friend and love each other.
They are the only characters in any Disney film I wanted to be together. Mainly because in most Disney films the relationships between characters seem forced (by the script and story), unlike that Nick and Judy's relationship seems so natural and it would only make sense for it to grow into something more than just a friendship (kind of like Jim and Pam from The Office).
I think that Nick and Judy were a romantic couple this whole time in Zootopia (2016) and when Nick and Judy first met, while Nick became friends with Judy quickly, Judy refused to do so with Nick as she initially hated him for being a con artist and sly and shifty and also due to her prejudice towards foxes and believed he was being a selfish rude con artist with a big ego and the only reason why she wanted Nick to help her solve the nighthowler crisis and Emmet Otterton case was not because she wanted to become friends with him but rather to use him to help her solve the Emmet Otterton case to save her job at the ZPD due to her deal with Bogo when blackmailing him into doing so when he refused though Judy would later become friends with Nick after he helped her out with solving the case and after the latter defended her from Bogo when he tried to force her to resign from the ZPD for her failure to solve the Emmet Otterton case convincing him to give her a second chance and after Nick revealed his tragic backstory to Judy on how be became a con artist in the first place and the reasons behind his behvaior caused by the Junior Ranger Scouts incident to prevent people from seeing that they get to him, Judy would realize it was wrong for her to judge Nick for his behavior right away without giving him a chance to explain his storty and would apologize to Nick for misunderstanding him and gave him the moral support he needs to achieve his dreams and life goals despite what other people say about it and the consequences he will face in the process like she did and Judy would develop romantic feelings with Nick and flirt with him a lot as she found him attractive due to his traits (Common women’s sexual attraction to men.) to the latter having a lot in common due to them both being treated in society as an outcast for his species like she was and Nick would also develop romantic feelings for Judy for her skills and abilities and helping him get over the scouts incident and become a better person and for having a similar backstory to him (If Judy did ever tell him her backstory offscreen and her encounter with Gideon Gray caused by her prejudice against foxes.) and Nick would flirt with Judy a lot too.

This shows that Ember’s parents and Judy’s parents are angles and heroic protagontists and good and supportive and optimistic parents to Judy allowing her to do what her heart is set on even if it means it will separate them, while Manny and Ellie are devils and anti-heroes, pessimistic and overprotective parents towards Peaches disapproving of her ideas to move away with Julian after they marry due to the dangerous consquences they will face in the process making Diego and Shira better parents to Peaches by comparison. As a writer, I don’t mind shipping. What I mind is blatantly ignoring canon to insist that your preference is right and the writer’s actual work and vision is somehow wrong. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. It’s when “shippers” can’t tell the difference between opinion and fact, that it becomes problematic. Ship wars have ruined *many* fandoms. Personally, I don’t want or need Judy and Nick to be romantic. But I love what you said about complexity and how it doesn’t have to be strictly one or the other. It can be something in between.

But after the press conference incident which lead to Nick and Judy’s temporary breakup due to their character flaws and traumas they experienced in their pasts getting the better of them again, and after Judy accidentally insults Nick and his species and all predators in general with in the press conference saying the predators were turning savage due to them reverting back to their primitive savage ways after being manipulated by a sheep reporter and Bellwether indirectly causing discrimination and segregation towards predators in Zootopia and fear towards them and for giving the antagonist Bellwether exactly what she wanted, Nick feeling betrayed would disown Judy as his friend and leave and decline her initial offer that he declined due to the press conference to join the ZPD, become a police officer there and her partner. This left Judy not only remorseful for her wrongdoings and actions towards the predators in Zootopia especially towards Nick but heartbroken over Nick abandoning her for her wrongdoings as she had romantic feelings for Nick and felt heartbroken over losing her red fox love interest and even cried over it even causing Judy after that to fall into a state of depression and becoming deposant over losing her red fox love interest Nick and also remorseful for her wrongdoings towards him but Judy after learning the truth behind the night howlers turning the predators savage found the courage to apologize to Nick for her mistakes and Nick forgave her letting bygones and bygones and agreed to give their friendship a second chance which Judy was relieved over as she needed her red fox love interest and had no idea what she would do without him.

It's funny how people think that a close friendship isn't love. Platonic love is still a very powerful thing. I'm not saying shipping is a bad thing. I'm just saying that it's kind of upsetting that most people think that two characters having great chemistry = a romantic relationship
@ peblezQ, I 100% agree with this. It really bugs me whenever two characters have GREAT chemistry together, and folks automatically equate this as "romance". Suddenly every glance, every laugh, every touch, every THING is seen as definitive 'proof' that they are 'in love'. ...and when you point out that they could in fact 'love' each other, but just in a purely platonic way, you are ATTACKED. If the two characters JUST SO HAPPEN to be different races, then not only are you ATTACKED; but you'll also be labeled a 'racist'. If the two characters are the same gender, they then accuse you of being 'homophobic'. It's getting to a point of where it's stressful to even comment on videos now, because if you post something outside of the generalized opinion of the fan-base, you run the risk of being attacked and socially (online) ostracized.

This is great and really touches upon a lot of problems with shipping, for example, Star and Marco from star vs. For the longest time and still now I view their relationship as more of a good friendship yes they had/have crushes on each other and most recently accidentally heat of the moment kissed. But I feel that they should just stay friends (but I know it's up to the write in the end). Not every pair of male and female should be going out and I personally don't think Star and Marco are good for each other for many reasons. Another good pair of friends that were confirmed to be just friends was Enid and Rad from OK K.O. they went on a date one time in middle school and they were always such good friends and got along so well I'm sure a lot of people were shipping them (even I started shipping them). But the creators touched upon this matter and they showed that the characters were just good friends now and what their relationship is platonic and nothing more. which made me understand and even like the characters even more because of it and it made the relationship more real. I understand the dynamic of best friend and lover is appealing because it's someone you're close to you and knows you but more times than not you're just close friends and that's it. I feel this should be portrayed more in animations to show how complicated relationships, feelings, and people in general can be. Even i have had a situation like these where i had a small crush on my best friend and she had a crush on me. We never told each other until way later but we were just friends though we never tried to be more than that and im happy that we're just friends.

oh yeah same! i use to kind of ship it back in season 1 but with jackie coming in and most of thr fans hating on her i was shipping jarco to be ironic to come to find i actually did ship it and when a lot of the fans were hating on it i just stopped liking starco and i haven't liked it since because most fans are still hostile against any other ship. So, to answer the question of the status of their relationship: Honestly, it could go either way. To jump into a relationship after only being friends for a short period is over done. I love how their relationship feels real, that they’re the best friends ever! I also personally love love love the fanbased stories where they become a couple. (My fav is the one where they really have a lot of opposition from family and even Judy is hesitant, despite living Nick, but I digress.) The fact they are different species is so relevant because so many people in the real world are in mixed raced relationships and marriages, and those are sensitive topics to some people. It would shine a light on such a complicated topic in a fun, more balanced way. Even if they stay friends, their relationship feels so solid that it doesn’t NEED to become a romance for it to stick. Their banter and genuine love for one another makes them truly good friends who have each other’s backs no matter what happens. The depth of that is not too common, and it’s very refreshing. I’d love to see the relationship mature, set deeper roots, and if it does go in a romantic way, that it seems natural and not just for the movies sake. Their relationship deserves more care and thought behind it. Everyone loves a wedding and a happy ending. But somehow, we forget that relationships, whether platonic or romantic, are complicated and take work. Being someone who IS married, I know this personally. Relationships of any kind take work, and I want to see the ups and downs versus just “Oh, we’re in love and everything is butterflies and unicorns!” So that’s my thoughts on it. I like the idea that they're friends who are contemplating the idea of a romantic relationship with each other! It could be a perfect foundation for a new movie, tackling the mixed race relationships, and how everyone sees them, handles them, and/or accepts/denies them. Judy could face some heavy backlash from her family that makes her seriously question whether or not her decisions are right or not, only to meet Nick's mother(and father should he actually still be alive) and find they accept her openly seeing that race doesn't actually matter, I feel a powerful and moving story just waiting to be explored here, it just needs to be done right.

I loved how you took this subject in a very mature manner, I personally also see Nick and Judy as a Platonic relationship because of the things you stated. Friends like Nick and Judy do exist, and not all of them turn into a romance. Not every male and female team up needs to end with a cliché romance because it’s CLICHÉ and over played. I also admire Disney for taking the friends route as well, as it breaks the typical romance stuff and just relies on pure friendship to tell a fantastic story. I just really hope in a sequel, they don’t make Wildehopps canon, and just stick with their great friendship.

I mean throughout the movie they were "just friends" but there was definitely a lot of romantic tension between them from the beginning (In my opinion at least). So the way I see it, they' started off as friends and should become a couple later on (like any healthy, realistic relationship). Rushing it would have been pretty cheap but I see so much potential and I do think that that was intended.

The thing that makes this potential couple different from other Disney films is they didn't have that "love at first sight" bs like all the others. They didn't fall in love within the first interaction they had. It took Nick half of the film to even be somewhat nice to Judy and even then he was still on guard. It has a natural progression to it. I do stand by that they are just friends by the end of the film, but in a sequel (as long as it's paced right and isn't the main focus) I could see them becoming more. And this is coming from someone who never cares to "ship" anything, but the bond they have was written very well.
I am definetely late for this debate, but since Zootopia 2 might come out by the end of next year, and i recently watched the movie for the first time, and fell in love with it, i will give my opinion. Now, i know that the biggest issue at hand is the old " couple of protagonists must be in love " cliche, but i really don't see it with Judy and Nick. Their relationship and chemistry from uneasy partners to close friends was something that flowed naturally and realistically, avoiding the cliche's traits, like poor chemistry, obvious hints at love for each other, etc. And also, this whole ordeal started because of that final line from Judy where she says that she " love " Nick, and the director himself confirmed that this was on purpose, in order to make their relationship feel ambiguous for the viewer. I mean, if this was a one time movie, then ok, make this Inception ending where we can get to guess wether they fell in love for each other, or remained friends. But now, we know that there will be not one, but two sequels? Will they just keep this ambiguity troughout all 3 movies? My point is, if this ends up going in a romantic path, it's not weird or cliche. In fact, like i said, it avoided the cliche's traits and gave a wonderfully built chemistry. That's my opinion on the matter, at least
To be perfectly honest, I’m not a huge fan of shipping. I mean, I guess I don’t have a problem with it as long as it stays in the realm of pure fan speculation/theorizing/wishful thinking, unless the creators of the story write a canon ship into their work. But, for one thing, sometimes fans ship characters that, in their own stories, it would make no sense for them to be in a romantic relationship, or it just wouldn’t add anything to their character development. But even that’s not so bad - shipping can get even worse because sometimes some fans of something decide that being a fan somehow gives them the right to control the thing they’re a fan of. It’s as if, once they decide they like something, the mere fact that they like it means it has to give them whatever they want. And if what they want is for a ship to sail, then they will get very angry if the creators of the thing decide it would be better for the story if that ship sank or just never left harbor. And if a fan of something wants his or her ship to be canon and another fan has a conflicting ship that he or she wants to be canon, that’s what starts ship wars and all kinds of crazy drama. So in a nutshell, I guess you could say that I don’t mind shipping as long as the pairing makes a reasonable amount of sense for the story and characters involved, and as long as it doesn’t start any fandom drama.
What I never do is ship real people together, like sometimes sure I can ship friends but I don't go out of my way to get them together, like for many of these famous people like some of the k pop, they ship their members together and stress them to get together even when one they were never interested in that person or two, they are already in a loving relationship with someone else. I heard some members in those bands had their friendships strained from the fans wishing them to be together. Shipping can be very scary depending on who is doing the shipping.
If they do make a second movie, I hope they pair the two realistically, i.e. they start the movie as good friends, even best, but as the movie goes on that relationship slowly grows into an amorous one, but doesn't jump ahead to 'married' just yet. Like, I definitely see the potential for that bond in Zootopia, but at the same time, they've literally been together for a couple days. It would definitely fit right in with the theme: just as real life is messy, relationships are also just as messy and take time.
Notice when Nick's facial expression changed when Judy answered her own question "Yes. Yes I do.", he looks relieved that Judy loves him. Lmao help 😢😂 my obsession for them is kinda unhealthy but whatever.
Return to Zootopia (BrownTable's awesome fan film) is the perfect example of what it would be like if the 2 got together and I personally like them as a couple. Plus think it would help the writers create a perfect sequel. 🦊+🐰=👍👌💰

Hmm... this is setting up to be a Fan Fiction. And everyone knows how those go lol I get how people could see a love interest between them, but people are good friends and say they love each other but as friends, I have friends that I tell them I love them, but it’s not in any relationship. It’s just me and them are closer, I love them as my friend.
If I am being honest, I would be okay with Judy and Nick being either friends or a couple. Despite not having the best first impression of each other, and working together initially only out of a necessity, both Judy and Nick did eventually get along with each other, and they do work well together.
I wanted them to be a couple since I watched zootopia. This thought still keeps haunting me and I am very excited about zootopia 2. I don't know why but I just felt the love spark between them.

I would honestly love to see them start a relationship and then have a healthy break-up where they work on their friendship and recover from such. I know far too many people where it becomes clear they should not continue dating because it changes their dynamic too much, but they continue until they hate each other. I haven't seen a lot of representation on how to handle a healthy time to stop before it spirals.
I think it would be a great idea if we see Judy and Nick get married and adopt a troubled youth like Nick himself and see the two family’s Nicks family and Judy’s family struggle to get along being that Judy is a bunny and nick being a fox. It would be amazing to see the two family’s struggle to get along but then as time goes on they begin to like each other. That would be interesting to watch
I love them as best friends but I also love the idea of them being more. they didn't start with attraction for each other, in fact they clashed but but in a few hours learned more about themselves and one another resulting in bonding and quickly leading them to be the best friend they could possibly have which also lays the ground work for the possibility of there being more.
I don't ship them not because they're different species but because they're partners on the police force. I don't think people who work that close in such a stressful job should be romantically involved. The context of that type of relationship can turn it toxic extremely quickly. They work best as friends and partners in crime fighting where they're at now.

Zuko and Katara. The writers seem to have been setting it up for that especially in that scene in the cave at bae sing sae. That relationship feels less forced than the sudden relationship between aang and katara in the finale.
I don't mind shipping. (There's some ships I do, like Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich, Lee and Carley, Nick and Judy) But shipping annoys me when people start shipping EVERYONE and EVERYTHING, like if you're best friends you're shipped. You defend each other you're shipped. You hug you're shipped. You have lunch together you're shipped. Some ships have little to no grounds and I'm annoyed hearing a BUNCH of random ships that make no sense (example Scootaloo and Spike, Celestia and Discord, AJ and Tenn)
I swing both ways with the romance and friendship. Who says couples can't be best friends? Maybe in future films their relationship could be in the background and like: on screen they are best friends but off screen (and away from other people) they probably act very loving towards each other but also keep the friendly air about them. And it's okay if there are people who think they should stick as friends, I can see them as friends myself just more romantically. And some ships don't have to be canon, they're just there because someone thought two people looked great together, and those two don't *have* to be a boy and girl - could be any gender that is shipped!

I 100% agree. My husband is my best friend. I tell him everything. Our relationship started as friendship. It grew into romantic love over time. I had a don' date your friends rule, but he was the exception. I realized that we were practically already dating. It was an easy transition from friendship to love. It just felt so natural. We've been together 10 years now and married for 6. It isn't always easy, but I couldn't imagine spending my life with anyone else.

I think there are some similarities, but overall they're pretty different. Eugene is more of an adventure-type while Nick is more of a hustler street-smart guy. Rapunzel and Judy are both bubbly, but Rapunzel's a free spirited dreamer while Judy's an idealistic worker.

Zootopia did a such a great job at establishing the foundation for Nick and Judy's relationship, the creators can build upon that foundation any way they wish. Personally, I would love for it to be romantic, but if they remain platonic, they would still be fun to watch.

If water like Wade Ribble and fire like Ember Lumen in Pixar’s Elemental (2023) can become a romantic couple, with their families’ approvals, a red fox like Nick Wilde and gray rabbit like Judy Hopps can too.
If Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps do fall in love with each other and become a romantic couple in Tails from Zooptoia set after Zooptoia (2016) and before Zooptoia 2 with the series finale being a Valentine’s Day Special involving Nick and Judy getting married and moving into a new apartment in Savannah Central and having red fox and gray rabbit children introduced in Zooptoia 2 (Which is also Rio 2 (2014) done right.) which features them as the duteragontists while Nick and Judy are the protagonists, I want in the episode where Nick and Judy go on their first romantic date which could be an original story or an adaptation of one of these non-canon fan fictions or even have it be set during the end credits of Zooptoia revealing that Nick and Judy attending Gazelle’s concert was their first date and in this episode when Nick and Judy have their date together the song, “I Just Can’t Get Enough” by Decepe Mode or “ Photograph” should play because they reflect Nick and Judy’s personalities and romantic relationship perfectly. Don’t you agree? I mean depending on your point of view.
Are Nick and Judy just friends, an older brother and younger sister duo like Nooshy and Johnny in the Sing franchise or a real romantic couple and boyfriend and girlfriend and yet to be married and have kids to raise or platonic coworker buddies?
Zootopia 2 should be about this fox and bunny who are forced to manage their newfound relationship, in a large community that is still learning to become more accepting of predators. Due to this, they are all unfamiliar with and perhaps even blatantly against the idea of inter-species relationships. Just like the first film, Zootopia 2 would also relate to real-world issues of prejudice and discrimination, without it being too mature or explicit that it is no longer enjoyable for younger audiences. Maybe Nick and Judy's unusual relationship will cause the animals of Zootopia to be wary of them and their devotion to protecting the city, therefore affecting their jobs on the police force as respectable officers. By the end, they will have shed light on the idea that it's okay to be different, and inspired the audience to be brave enough to step out of the box and forge a new possibility or norm as well (as demonstrated by Judy in the first film, when she became the first bunny cop).
While yes, pairing off the two main characters is common in Disney films, this couple would certainly be out of the ordinary. The sequence of this film would mark a progressive leap into the events of modern society, while still gaining status as a beloved Disney animated film like its predecessor.
I understand why many people may not want Nick and Judy to become a couple, much less have their relationship be a primary focus in the plot of the sequel, but following the course of events from the first film - with the morals 'never give up on your dreams' and 'you can be anything you want to be' - I feel like including this plot would definitely make for a very globally progressive and engaging film that truly branches off from the first.
Personally, Zootopia was unlike any other Disney movie I'd seen in a long time, if ever before. It had all the elements of a delightful and beautifully animated children's movie, yet also maintained inspirational morals that I strongly believe in as an individual. It had charm, ambition, aspiration, and awe; it had pain, obstacles, abuse, and loss. It had dreams, it had reality, and it addressed the line that always appears to divide the two, as set in stone by society.
Zootopia 2 has a high standard to beat, so let's get it to it's fullest potential. The first film was such a wonderful story, and many of us want to see that taken in another extraordinary direction.

The problem is if they make Judy and Nick become a couple is then the discussion of offspring being sterile and not being able to have kids. In the animal world cross bread species animals like Mules, ligers and such cannot reproduce. While this is a movie with animals, but they should also talk about biological differences, have a character that is a mule, but cannot have children because of being a hybrid animal.

This is nothing compared to how Manny and Ellie acted overprotective, overly clingy and pessimistic towards Peaches like anti-heroes and overprotective devils to the point where they don’t allow her to move away and explore the world with Julian disapproving of him for his behavior as well until the end of Collision Course, where they reconcile with Peaches and finally approve of her plans to marry Julian and move away with him and explore the world in their honeymoon in Collision Course (2016) making Diego and Shira (Who are deciding on whether or not they should have kids of their own to raise, they will trust me.) look like better parents to Peaches by comparison.
I really hope they make a sequel. Zootopia is amazing.

I think both sides are equally possible! The great thing about their relationship is that (in my opinion) They are wonderful friends! And that's very important either way! Your partner SHOULD be your best friend! And I don't mean to say that, you can't have another 'best friend', But I do believe couples should have that kind of a deep relationship! For example my boyfriend and I met years ago, became best friends, and then decided we both wanted more then that! I believe (If Disney were to explore the relationship more) THAT is what they were going for, A bond that grows over time, from near enemies, to friends, to BEST friends, to possible partners! In my opinion that is the best kind of relationship to have! But at the same time I think both would be happy just to have each other as wonderful friends! And THAT is an amazing thing to have! :D

I remember my dad asking ''Are those two together?'' before watching the movie (I watched it in the cinema, he then watched the dvd at home) Then i said no. After the movie ended, he said ''Wait, they said they loved each other... So they ARE together'' and i explained ''That could just be as friends'' because thats how i saw it, and i thought that's how it was. I didn't know it was all about opinion :P
I felt like it was more of a romantic thing because of the way they said it either way I love their relationship.
I don't think that the 'Opposite gender characters always get together" trope is necessarily a bad one. If the two characters have compatible sexualities and they become closer to each other than anyone else, I think that it's only natural that they develop a romance. And in the case of Nick and Judy, I think that there's a lot of potential not just for storytelling as you said, but also for them to just have a unique romance where it's not all lubby-dubby dialogue, but instead where they're still full of all the great quips and such, and act a bit more like platonic friends who enjoy each other's company for more than just romantic reasons.
One of my favorite ships is Godzilla and Mothra, I sometimes wish that Mothra instead of sacrificing herself for Godzilla but let another Monster like Angirus or Rodan sacrifice themselves for him instead, maybe even King Cesar, or even Battra Mothras evil brother as a way he can redeem himself. Or she would even die with him if it was the other way around and Godzilla sacrificed himself for Mothra instead and Mothra then committed suicide to stay with him in heaven.

To piggyback off of your observation, leaving the relationship open ended was on purpose to test the terrifying depths that is fandom shipping. For example, the legend of Korra brought us our very first fluid-romantic relationship in young adult media, BUT it was never stated exclusively in the show because it can be really hard to tell how fans are going to react. Having the idea in mind but not flat out saying keeps their hands clean until they can gage a reaction.
As for the naysayers, I can see where they are coming from, most disney films shoehorn in a relationship at the last minute and it feels forced. Zootopia does not have this problem. There is actual character development with genuine emotion that is brought on through plot. These characters are responding in an organic way to a relatable situation. Why should sloppy slapdash exposition in other media trying to make a quick buck off a crappy plot twist (like the paint by numbers emoji movie for example), be held against a good story with actual progression? It's true that not all films should end in a romantic happily ever after, but in this case, a relationship is justifiable.

I think people forget that the first step to a romantic relationship is being simple friends. In my experience, friendship is the best way to enter a relationship, because even in marriage or even parenthood it never feels like the labels change what is between a couple: love isn't always characterized by specific behaviors (though it has also been my experience that there is such a thing as falling in love), and that is why I felt like Nick and Judy's chemistry in the third act to the end felt romantically coded.
In my opinion, I’d love to see Nick & Judy together in a romantic relationship. I think it would work quite well. But I trust that regardless of how the filmmakers take the series, if it gets a sequel, they handle it beautifully and respectfully.
You can be best friends with someone you are romantically involved in! Them becoming a couple wouldn't need to lessen their bond of friendship, and could even strengthen it. Not only could them becoming a couple help explore issues of interracial relationships, but it would be great to explore how a healthy relationship build on trust and mutual respect could look like. Of them being best friends, partners, and yes lovers while balancing their professional and personal lives.
Yet perhaps while explorong feelings of self doubt, fear, uncertainty, and worry not only for if a relationship could work but in what others might think. A chance seeing Nick and Judy feeling venerability, yet depending on each other for support as they can work though their feelings yet still be awesome officers. That, and just seeing the joy the two could share in each other's company, and the potential of cute scenes.
In the Zooptoia franchise, Aside from the theory that Nick and Judy have a romantic relationship with themselves, do they happen to have any romances with any other people, did they date anyone before meeting each other or were even interested in getting married and having kids to raise, did Nick ever fall in love with and date any red fox vixens? Did Judy date or ever fall in love with any male rabbits? In the Moana franchise, meanwhile, Moana and Maui look like they so far don’t have any romances with anyone (Moana and Maui’s relationship is not romantic but only a friendship because of their age differences.) or even dated or fell in love with any male or female humans, goddesses or gods or demigods or demigoddesses before meeting each other.
I prefer them as best friends. A relationship like theirs is very rare, I’d love to see a boy and girl duo that stay platonic. Not every pair of male/female best friends has to get together.

It's not like those relationships don't exist in TV and movies ya know. Just look at Friends! Lol and I get them being close friends, but in my opinion there were WAY too many moments that feel like their tiptoeing that line. Personally, my boyfriend started out as my best friend and we've been together for a pretty long time now. I mean, I don't care either way if they get together or not, but I root more for the side of an amorous relationship. I'm just saying when I walked out of the theater I turned to my sister and asked if it was wrong to ship those two together. She said since they're anthro, no. So it's cool. Also if they got together, it would be a really good example of interracial love since the whole movie was an allegory for race. To be honest, I kinda think that trumps the "platonic boy-girl relationships should preside since it's always portrayed as romantic" side since that could be done anywhere and with any movie and it wouldn't have as much meaning to the plot. With a romantic relationship, the allegory here would be extremely strong and would stand the test of time longer. I just think that's a better idea is all. I can agree with your phrase "for now". Its true: not every story has to end with romance. Brave saw a daughter and mother become closer, Lilo and Stitch it-... well, I guess that doesn't count because of Jumba and Pleakly. Still, my point is that Judy and Nick being close friends makes a lot of sense and is more realistic. They created a close bond and platonically love each other. "For now". Like real relationships, and like Elsa pointed out: you can't fall in love with someone you just met and Frozen showed us the dangers of doing so (then Ana turns around and falls for a different guys she just met). If Judy and Nick end up together, that's great. Who knows what the future holds, but for now, a close friendship is still a wonderful relationship to have

Here is a thing about love that my grandfather told me. “When you fall in love it’s with your best friend. Either romantic or not.” And that is how I see Judy and Nick. No mater what their Relationship is. They are each other’s best friend and love each other.
They are the only characters in any Disney film I wanted to be together. Mainly because in most Disney films the relationships between characters seem forced (by the script and story), unlike that Nick and Judy's relationship seems so natural and it would only make sense for it to grow into something more than just a friendship (kind of like Jim and Pam from The Office).

I think that Nick and Judy were a romantic couple this whole time in Zootopia (2016) and when Nick and Judy first met, while Nick became friends with Judy quickly, Judy refused to do so with Nick as she initially hated him for being a con artist and sly and shifty and also due to her prejudice towards foxes and believed he was being a selfish rude con artist with a big ego and the only reason why she wanted Nick to help her solve the nighthowler crisis and Emmet Otterton case was not because she wanted to become friends with him but rather to use him to help her solve the Emmet Otterton case to save her job at the ZPD due to her deal with Bogo when blackmailing him into doing so when he refused though Judy would later become friends with Nick after he helped her out with solving the case and after the latter defended her from Bogo when he tried to force her to resign from the ZPD for her failure to solve the Emmet Otterton case convincing him to give her a second chance and after Nick revealed his tragic backstory to Judy on how be became a con artist in the first place and the reasons behind his behvaior caused by the Junior Ranger Scouts incident to prevent people from seeing that they get to him, Judy would realize it was wrong for her to judge Nick for his behavior right away without giving him a chance to explain his storty and would apologize to Nick for misunderstanding him and gave him the moral support he needs to achieve his dreams and life goals despite what other people say about it and the consequences he will face in the process like she did and Judy would develop romantic feelings with Nick and flirt with him a lot as she found him attractive due to his traits (Common women’s sexual attraction to men.) to the latter having a lot in common due to them both being treated in society as an outcast for his species like she was and Nick would also develop romantic feelings for Judy for her skills and abilities and helping him get over the scouts incident and become a better person and for having a similar backstory to him (If Judy did ever tell him her backstory offscreen and her encounter with Gideon Gray caused by her prejudice against foxes.) and Nick would flirt with Judy a lot too.

As a writer, I don’t mind shipping. What I mind is blatantly ignoring canon to insist that your preference is right and the writer’s actual work and vision is somehow wrong. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. It’s when “shippers” can’t tell the difference between opinion and fact, that it becomes problematic. Ship wars have ruined *many* fandoms.
Personally, I don’t want or need Judy and Nick to be romantic. But I love what you said about complexity and how it doesn’t have to be strictly one or the other. It can be something in between.

But after the press conference incident which lead to Nick and Judy’s temporary breakup due to their character flaws and traumas they experienced in their pasts getting the better of them again, and after Judy accidentally insults Nick and his species and all predators in general with in the press conference saying the predators were turning savage due to them reverting back to their primitive savage ways after being manipulated by a sheep reporter and Bellwether indirectly causing discrimination and segregation towards predators in Zootopia and fear towards them and for giving the antagonist Bellwether exactly what she wanted, Nick feeling betrayed would disown Judy as his friend and leave and decline her initial offer that he declined due to the press conference to join the ZPD, become a police officer there and her partner.
This left Judy not only remorseful for her wrongdoings and actions towards the predators in Zootopia especially towards Nick but heartbroken over Nick abandoning her for her wrongdoings as she had romantic feelings for Nick and felt heartbroken over losing her red fox love interest and even cried over it even causing Judy after that to fall into a state of depression and becoming deposant over losing her red fox love interest Nick and also remorseful for her wrongdoings towards him but Judy after learning the truth behind the night howlers turning the predators savage found the courage to apologize to Nick for her mistakes and Nick forgave her letting bygones and bygones and agreed to give their friendship a second chance which Judy was relieved over as she needed her red fox love interest and had no idea what she would do without him.

@ peblezQ, I 100% agree with this. It really bugs me whenever two characters have GREAT chemistry together, and folks automatically equate this as "romance". Suddenly every glance, every laugh, every touch, every THING is seen as definitive 'proof' that they are 'in love'.
...and when you point out that they could in fact 'love' each other, but just in a purely platonic way, you are ATTACKED. If the two characters JUST SO HAPPEN to be different races, then not only are you ATTACKED; but you'll also be labeled a 'racist'. If the two characters are the same gender, they then accuse you of being 'homophobic'. It's getting to a point of where it's stressful to even comment on videos now, because if you post something outside of the generalized opinion of the fan-base, you run the risk of being attacked and socially (online) ostracized.

This is great and really touches upon a lot of problems with shipping, for example, Star and Marco from star vs. For the longest time and still now I view their relationship as more of a good friendship yes they had/have crushes on each other and most recently accidentally heat of the moment kissed. But I feel that they should just stay friends (but I know it's up to the write in the end). Not every pair of male and female should be going out and I personally don't think Star and Marco are good for each other for many reasons. Another good pair of friends that were confirmed to be just friends was Enid and Rad from OK K.O. they went on a date one time in middle school and they were always such good friends and got along so well I'm sure a lot of people were shipping them (even I started shipping them). But the creators touched upon this matter and they showed that the characters were just good friends now and what their relationship is platonic and nothing more. which made me understand and even like the characters even more because of it and it made the relationship more real. I understand the dynamic of best friend and lover is appealing because it's someone you're close to you and knows you but more times than not you're just close friends and that's it. I feel this should be portrayed more in animations to show how complicated relationships, feelings, and people in general can be.
Even i have had a situation like these where i had a small crush on my best friend and she had a crush on me. We never told each other until way later but we were just friends though we never tried to be more than that and im happy that we're just friends.

So, to answer the question of the status of their relationship:
Honestly, it could go either way. To jump into a relationship after only being friends for a short period is over done. I love how their relationship feels real, that they’re the best friends ever! I also personally love love love the fanbased stories where they become a couple. (My fav is the one where they really have a lot of opposition from family and even Judy is hesitant, despite living Nick, but I digress.) The fact they are different species is so relevant because so many people in the real world are in mixed raced relationships and marriages, and those are sensitive topics to some people. It would shine a light on such a complicated topic in a fun, more balanced way.
Even if they stay friends, their relationship feels so solid that it doesn’t NEED to become a romance for it to stick. Their banter and genuine love for one another makes them truly good friends who have each other’s backs no matter what happens. The depth of that is not too common, and it’s very refreshing.
I’d love to see the relationship mature, set deeper roots, and if it does go in a romantic way, that it seems natural and not just for the movies sake. Their relationship deserves more care and thought behind it.
Everyone loves a wedding and a happy ending. But somehow, we forget that relationships, whether platonic or romantic, are complicated and take work. Being someone who IS married, I know this personally. Relationships of any kind take work, and I want to see the ups and downs versus just “Oh, we’re in love and everything is butterflies and unicorns!”

I like the idea that they're friends who are contemplating the idea of a romantic relationship with each other! It could be a perfect foundation for a new movie, tackling the mixed race relationships, and how everyone sees them, handles them, and/or accepts/denies them. Judy could face some heavy backlash from her family that makes her seriously question whether or not her decisions are right or not, only to meet Nick's mother(and father should he actually still be alive) and find they accept her openly seeing that race doesn't actually matter, I feel a powerful and moving story just waiting to be explored here, it just needs to be done right.

I loved how you took this subject in a very mature manner, I personally also see Nick and Judy as a Platonic relationship because of the things you stated. Friends like Nick and Judy do exist, and not all of them turn into a romance. Not every male and female team up needs to end with a cliché romance because it’s CLICHÉ and over played. I also admire Disney for taking the friends route as well, as it breaks the typical romance stuff and just relies on pure friendship to tell a fantastic story. I just really hope in a sequel, they don’t make Wildehopps canon, and just stick with their great friendship.

I mean throughout the movie they were "just friends" but there was definitely a lot of romantic tension between them from the beginning (In my opinion at least). So the way I see it, they' started off as friends and should become a couple later on (like any healthy, realistic relationship). Rushing it would have been pretty cheap but I see so much potential and I do think that that was intended.

The thing that makes this potential couple different from other Disney films is they didn't have that "love at first sight" bs like all the others. They didn't fall in love within the first interaction they had. It took Nick half of the film to even be somewhat nice to Judy and even then he was still on guard. It has a natural progression to it. I do stand by that they are just friends by the end of the film, but in a sequel (as long as it's paced right and isn't the main focus) I could see them becoming more. And this is coming from someone who never cares to "ship" anything, but the bond they have was written very well.
Too be fair some of those “Love at first sight” movies were done very well.
I am definetely late for this debate, but since Zootopia 2 might come out by the end of next year, and i recently watched the movie for the first time, and fell in love with it, i will give my opinion. Now, i know that the biggest issue at hand is the old " couple of protagonists must be in love " cliche, but i really don't see it with Judy and Nick. Their relationship and chemistry from uneasy partners to close friends was something that flowed naturally and realistically, avoiding the cliche's traits, like poor chemistry, obvious hints at love for each other, etc. And also, this whole ordeal started because of that final line from Judy where she says that she " love " Nick, and the director himself confirmed that this was on purpose, in order to make their relationship feel ambiguous for the viewer. I mean, if this was a one time movie, then ok, make this Inception ending where we can get to guess wether they fell in love for each other, or remained friends. But now, we know that there will be not one, but two sequels? Will they just keep this ambiguity troughout all 3 movies? My point is, if this ends up going in a romantic path, it's not weird or cliche. In fact, like i said, it avoided the cliche's traits and gave a wonderfully built chemistry. That's my opinion on the matter, at least

To be perfectly honest, I’m not a huge fan of shipping. I mean, I guess I don’t have a problem with it as long as it stays in the realm of pure fan speculation/theorizing/wishful thinking, unless the creators of the story write a canon ship into their work. But, for one thing, sometimes fans ship characters that, in their own stories, it would make no sense for them to be in a romantic relationship, or it just wouldn’t add anything to their character development. But even that’s not so bad - shipping can get even worse because sometimes some fans of something decide that being a fan somehow gives them the right to control the thing they’re a fan of. It’s as if, once they decide they like something, the mere fact that they like it means it has to give them whatever they want. And if what they want is for a ship to sail, then they will get very angry if the creators of the thing decide it would be better for the story if that ship sank or just never left harbor. And if a fan of something wants his or her ship to be canon and another fan has a conflicting ship that he or she wants to be canon, that’s what starts ship wars and all kinds of crazy drama. So in a nutshell, I guess you could say that I don’t mind shipping as long as the pairing makes a reasonable amount of sense for the story and characters involved, and as long as it doesn’t start any fandom drama.
So much agreement on my end that it hurts. Ship wars are quite scary.

What I never do is ship real people together, like sometimes sure I can ship friends but I don't go out of my way to get them together, like for many of these famous people like some of the k pop, they ship their members together and stress them to get together even when one they were never interested in that person or two, they are already in a loving relationship with someone else. I heard some members in those bands had their friendships strained from the fans wishing them to be together. Shipping can be very scary depending on who is doing the shipping.
If they do make a second movie, I hope they pair the two realistically, i.e. they start the movie as good friends, even best, but as the movie goes on that relationship slowly grows into an amorous one, but doesn't jump ahead to 'married' just yet. Like, I definitely see the potential for that bond in Zootopia, but at the same time, they've literally been together for a couple days. It would definitely fit right in with the theme: just as real life is messy, relationships are also just as messy and take time.
Notice when Nick's facial expression changed when Judy answered her own question "Yes. Yes I do.", he looks relieved that Judy loves him. Lmao help 😢😂 my obsession for them is kinda unhealthy but whatever.

I get how people could see a love interest between them, but people are good friends and say they love each other but as friends, I have friends that I tell them I love them, but it’s not in any relationship. It’s just me and them are closer, I love them as my friend.
If I am being honest, I would be okay with Judy and Nick being either friends or a couple. Despite not having the best first impression of each other, and working together initially only out of a necessity, both Judy and Nick did eventually get along with each other, and they do work well together.
I wanted them to be a couple since I watched zootopia. This thought still keeps haunting me and I am very excited about zootopia 2. I don't know why but I just felt the love spark between them.

I would honestly love to see them start a relationship and then have a healthy break-up where they work on their friendship and recover from such. I know far too many people where it becomes clear they should not continue dating because it changes their dynamic too much, but they continue until they hate each other. I haven't seen a lot of representation on how to handle a healthy time to stop before it spirals.

I don't ship them not because they're different species but because they're partners on the police force. I don't think people who work that close in such a stressful job should be romantically involved. The context of that type of relationship can turn it toxic extremely quickly. They work best as friends and partners in crime fighting where they're at now.

Zuko and Katara. The writers seem to have been setting it up for that especially in that scene in the cave at bae sing sae. That relationship feels less forced than the sudden relationship between aang and katara in the finale.
I don't mind shipping. (There's some ships I do, like Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich, Lee and Carley, Nick and Judy) But shipping annoys me when people start shipping EVERYONE and EVERYTHING, like if you're best friends you're shipped. You defend each other you're shipped. You hug you're shipped. You have lunch together you're shipped. Some ships have little to no grounds and I'm annoyed hearing a BUNCH of random ships that make no sense (example Scootaloo and Spike, Celestia and Discord, AJ and Tenn)

I swing both ways with the romance and friendship. Who says couples can't be best friends? Maybe in future films their relationship could be in the background and like: on screen they are best friends but off screen (and away from other people) they probably act very loving towards each other but also keep the friendly air about them. And it's okay if there are people who think they should stick as friends, I can see them as friends myself just more romantically. And some ships don't have to be canon, they're just there because someone thought two people looked great together, and those two don't *have* to be a boy and girl - could be any gender that is shipped!
